3.1Location: 22 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 5/17/12, Bottled Jan ’12 (Week 4)
Aroma: The nose is mostly roasted malts with a little bot of licorice
Appearance: It pours a dark brown-black color with a small brown head
Flavor: It tastes roasted up-front, with a later bitterness
Palate: The body is light-medium, with average carbonation, and a lightly dry finish
Overall Impression:
This is a decent beer, but that is about all. It is mostly roasty, a little one-dimensional, and a little dull.
2.612 oz. bottle purchased at Total Wine SanTan Village, Gilbert, AZ. Pour is black with moderate tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee and weak chocolate. Taste is bitter/sweet chocolate and coffee. This ale is thin, much too thin. The finish is bitter. A very forgetable brew.
3.7A ’light’ tasting stout. Very good flavor but not a ton of depth. A easy drinking stout. delicious
3.8Originally reviewed: 4/1/10. Poured into a pint glass. Had with lunch today. This pours a very thick black. No light comes through the murkiness at all. A small tan head caps it off, and leaves light lace after each sip. Scents of milk chocolate, roasted malts, and dark breads. Not bad.
The body is a little thin for the style. Carbonation level is moderate. I’d like a bit more "chew" to this. This has great flavor though! Nice bittersweet chocolate, a little char in the middle, and finishes dry and slightly tart. I for one, really enjoyed this one.
3.2Bottle- Pours a black color with a decent tan head that fades slowly to good lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, caramel sweetness with a bit of chocolate. Taste is similar to the aroma with caramel sweetness, bit of chocolate and roasted malt. There is a mild bitterness and a dry finish. Fairly medium body, smooth and somewhat creamy. Not a bad stout. Goes down pretty easy.
3.0Smells mildly like bread and coffee. Extremely dark brown color, almost black. Totally opaque. Average head with brown foam and little lacing. Tastes like coffee, strong and bitter. There are sour notes as well. Medium body, thick and creamy. An interesting looking beer. Taste is strong but not overpowering, and it finishes well.
3.0Didn’t do anything for me, smells nice, with lots of hops and tons of roast. And that’s where it ends, body is super thin, with nothing going on. I like stouts to have some balls, and this one does not.
3.8Coffee and chocolate nose. Thin fast disappearing head. Classic stout color. Caramel chocolate and roast malt. Mild coffee aftertaste. Light body. Dry finish.
3.1Bottle. Very dark pour with a nice tan head - good looking beer. Good aroma of roasted malts and coffee. Palate is a bit thin. Taste has roasty elements, but seems a bit on the bland side. Decent brew - easy drinking. Not terribly exciting.
3.2On tap @ Lakefront Brewery. Pour is dark brown/black with a khaki head. Aroma shows roasted malt, coffee, cocoa, and a touch of nuts. Flavor shows the same with emphasis on the roast. Overall body is lighter than expected and the finish is dry with a good amount of roasted bitterness. Much better on tap than in the bottle.
3.0Pours a pitch black with a tan head. Aromas of roasted malt, cream, metallic and cardboard. Initial flavor is smooth, slightly roasted, slightly bitter. Flavors of stale coffee, and burntness. A slight tart/sour note. Mouthfeel is bland and very thin. Not what I was expecting. Disappointing.
3.2Poured from bottle. I’m on a st patricks day kick today Aroma of coffee, toffee, cocoa, roasted nut. Solid black, light tan head. I get the same coffee and toffee flavors, along with chalk and a tiny bit of cocoa. Slightly sour aftertaste. Oily, watery feel - more like a porter. OK, but nothing special here.
2.9Bottle; poured a dark brown/black color with a smallish off white head. Aroma Aroma of roasted malt, tobacco, earth, and cardboard. Flavor was quite roasted, earthy and a bit muddled in flavor. Not all that pleasant.
3.0Bottle. Not really bad but the aroma is coffee and little else, the body is thin, flavour is coffee and a little roast. something of a watery finish
3.0Bottle pours a dark brown/black with a tiny brown head. Scent is coffee and roasty. Taste is same with chocolate notes. Very thin.
3.5Has a sweet coffee smell. Dark, dark ,dark color. Very low carbonation, almost watery feel. Taste is mellow for a stout. Pleasant for sipping.
3.2A: Pitch black with a health tan-brown head that leaves some lacing as it slowly recedes.
S: Roasted malts... nice dark chocolate, rich coffee, charcoal and caramel.. nice interaction between the different characteristics
T: Follows the scent... The chocolate and caramel take the lead followed by a more coffee like finish and a slightly smokey aftertaste... nice balance
M: Creamy. Full-medium bodied... not too heavy.. Refreshing.
O: A good Irish Stout... its balance is the key and will make this beer more sessionable
3.2[Bottle] Pours an opaque dark brown color with a bit of light brown head. Aroma is of roasted grains, mild coffee, anise and hints of smoke. The taste includes dark bread, cocoa powder, ash and mild herbal hops. Dry on the palate and borderline thin texture. Nice lacing left behind. Not bad. Along the same lines as Guinness but better.
2.8This beer is really pretty decent, but still nothing much to it. I like some more complexity.
2.9Bottle (thanks Jason). Pour brown black with a kahki tan head that dissipates to a thin collar. Aroma rye some soy and coco malt. Taste is more bitter rye bread and soy with some subtle roasted malt. Palate is thin slick and dry.
3.1Pours dark blackish brown with tan head on nitro tap at Lakefront Brewery. Aroma has roast, coffee, coffee grounds, chocolate and caramel. Taste is slightly thin, but has notes of roast, dry coffee and caramel, some slight dark fruit and earth as well.
4.5What a great Stout! What a great name for a Dry Irish Stout. Lakefront could have called it Pig’s Corpse Extract Stout, and I still would love it.
2.6Aroma is of chocolate malt. Pours very dark with a foamy tan head. Taste is smoky malt and followed by a dry bitter hop and ends with a sour aftertaste. Not too good.
2.2Watery like Guiness, but somehow better. Lakefront is a great brewery but this is one of their worst.
3.6Chocholate in the aroma and a mix of chocholate and coffee in the flavor. Medium in body and a pretty good stout all around.
3.2Pours almost black with ruby highlights when held up to the light. The head is medium with the pour and shrinks but retains it’s self well as a small tight head that leaves some lace. The aroma is roasty with some coffee and smoky notes, not particularly pungent but not faint either the aroma is nice enough.
Very roasty up front and certainly dry, some burnt toast gives way to a weird anise character that sticks out like a sore thumb. This gives way to some smokiness and dark fruit that finish out the beer very nicely. The palate is pretty thin, but then I suppose it’s also very easy to drink, which I think was more what they were going for here rather than a rich viscous mouthfeel.
It’s a nice enough dry stout really, although I must say that a year ago Des Moines saw the arrival of Sprecher’s Irish Stout which I found to be top of it’s class. This marked Sprecher’s return to the Des Moines market.... a year later they are back on their way out. I welcome Lakefront (new to the market) with open arms... and of the two Milwaukee brewers they are my favored by a long shot. But given the choice between the Irish stouts, this makes me miss Sprecher a little.
2.926-Jan-11 (12-oz bottle: Obtained in trade with footbalm, thanks Eric!) Cellared, but still tasty, this dry stout pours very dark brown with good clarity evident at the edges, and a thin, beige head that settles to a thin ring. Minimally sweet flavors of dark chocolate, cocoa nibs, coffee, and ashtray are reinforced by aromas of dark chocolate bar, milk chocolate, and coffee. The mouthfeel is dry and ashy, and the weight is medium-minus and a bit watery, but Irish-style stouts aren’t typically very weighty anyway. Carbonation is low to medium. A pretty good beer, but I admit I’m not a huge fan of this style.
2.5Had at Lakefront brewery tour. Average dry stout. Wouldn’t turn it down but doesn’t stand out. Serving: Tap
3.4Bottle. Pour was dark with a deep tan head. Aroma was of chocolate, light coffee, some caramel, and a touch of biscuit. Flavors were nicely balanced making this a very drinkable beer. I was a fan.
3.5Tasted 7/1/10. 12oz bottle. Bottled during Feb W3. Pours pitch and opaque with a slight thin off-white webbing. Aromas of cocoa and dark chocolate. Burnt toast and a kiss of anise. Medium bodied with a rather pleasant flavor. Good chocolate note with a touch cola in both flavor and effervescence. Dry finish with a mild astringency. Easy drinking with a nice mix of sweet roasted malts and a dry zesty finish.
