Laughing Dog Dogzilla Black IPA

Laughing Dog Dogzilla Black IPA

Formerly Tail Wagger Black IPA

A Big Bold Hoppy IPA that finishes with a dark twist.

True to its IPA roots Dogzilla has a massive hop presence that is Piney and Citrusy. A malty backbone, along with the dark malt gives it a bit of a roasty finish. Brewed with Simcoe and Cascade Hops, Pale Malt, Munich, and Black Barley.

4.4 Complex yet simple. Hoppy and happy.roasty, caramel, citrus, herbs, earthy, alcohol, vanilla,
3.6 22 oz bottle The black IPAs are new style that i have grown to like. This is a good one. The ale pours with a large tan head and nice lacing. The color is brown to black that you see light clearly through the glass. The aroma is mixture of some coffee and citrus. the medium body ale has average carbonation. The taste of roasted malts and coffee greet you with every sip. A bitter edge adds texture and lenght to the finish. This is a very drinkable black IPA.
3.2 12. oz bottle. Pours with a thick brownish head that does last. Looks dark brown in appearance, dark but not opaque. Aroma of roasted grains. A little chocolate. Some hop aroma. Tastes sweet up front. Bitterness in the end. It was decent
3.9 Pours dark brown with a huge, lacy tan head. Grapefruit hops and roasty malts in the aroma. Burnt dark malts on the palate along with sharp citrus hops. Lingering bitterness on the finish. I’m not a fan of this style but if you are this is a good one.
3.4 Dark brown with and enormous chunky off-white head that persists. malty aroma with some hopes. Flavor is roasted malt with some floral and pine hops. Starts out very fizzy but calms down to medium carbonation.
4.3 This is a pretty decent black IPA. Very roasty, some sharp bitterness. Dark appearance with a huge head.
3.4 Aroma of hops and grains with a hint of pepper. Taste of hops and black pepper with a slightly metallic palate. Dark brown colour with a full rich head.
3.6 Poured from a bottle. Light brown color, huge off white frothy head. Medium floral hops aroma. Medium body with a hop and pepper taste with a crisp finish.
3.9 750ml bottle. Pours brown with a pale beige head that’s mostly lasting which leaves excellent lacing. Aroma is pine, citrus, fabulously fresh, fragrantly floral. Really great aroma! Lightly sweet, light to medium bitter taste, and dark malts. Medium body, average carbonation, thin to oily texture and a bitter finish. Aroma blows me away! Worth revisiting.
4.0 22 oz. bomber. Almost black, clear dark brown with humongous beige rocky head, fluffy lacing, head at leas 1 inch over the lip of the glass. Floral, citrusy hops with some roasty malt in the background. Wonderful!
4.0 22 oz bottle. Pours with a huge solid head. Actually mild for being so dark. It's a combo of IPA citrus pine with a light caramel taste. And the head was still there when I finished the glass. ---Rated via Beer Buddy
3.9 Appearance has a nice dark brown amber color supporting a thick supporting head leaving fair lace. Smell has a nice balance of the malt and citric piney hop aroma. Taste is predominant black malt coming through with the sweeter palt malt coming through balanced by the hops. Mouthfeel is medium with good carbonation. One of the more enjoyable BIPA I’ve had.
3.9 Pours a really dark brown with a little light shining through and a small beige ring of foam around the glass. Aroma is roasted malts, cocoa and citrus. Flavour is citrus, pine, roasted malts, cocoa, and some malty sweetness.
3.9 Pours a ear brown color with a big frothy light brown head. Aroma of pine and citrus hops, roasted malts & a bit of cocoa. Taste is pine, citrus, chocolate, roasted barley and even more pine on the finish. Excellent black ipa with a great balance of roasted malts and citrus hops.
3.8 Brownish head with a dark but clear body that allows more light to pass through than expected. Roastiness in the aroma mixed with candy like caramel malt coming through. The hops show up after that, but not potent enough to turn it bitter. I prefer this to other black IPAs with bigger hop kick but suspect some hop fans will think it's not enough.
3.7 bomber (date of 7/2/12) - pours black with huge ivory head and skeletal lacing. Nose is resin, citrus and roast. I was reluctant to write citrus. Lots more IPA and less Black. Disappointing for a style I like and brewery I respect. A good brew nonetheless. all kinds of bitterness and latent sweetness. I’m amazed to find out I’m giving this a 3.7 but I stand with my rating.
3.4 Draught @ Smoke and Barrel, Washington, D.C. Pours hazy very dark chocolate brown with small light tan head. Clear, bitter aroma with notes of roast and malt. Roasty flavour with sweetish notes of malt. Coffee-like aftertaste. Nice but I have tried better beers within this style.
3.6 Black/ruby...almost see-through with a giant, whipped vanilla head. Perfume, floral hop aroma....yeast. Fruity, mild coffee, resin flavor. Unexpected....has a saison quality to it. Very tasty.
3.2 Was a little disappointed, had high hopes b/c i love black ipa, but this wasnt that dark, big white head, but missing the hops and anything too crazy. Not a big fan but drinkable.
2.8 Dark with light tan head. Aroma is sweet. Taste is not for me. Perfumy ipa. I will not be buying again.
3.6 650ml brown bottle. Medium brown colour with some red shades. Medium sized tan head. Hoppy nose, big citrus. Light roasty taste, dark chocolate, tons of citrus hops. Light roasty finish, lingering citrus and pine, ok bitterness. Medium body, decent zippy carbonation. Quite an easy drinking black IPA, could be just a touch bolder, but still good.
3.7 Almost black pour. Big tan head. Plenty of lacing. Hoppy aroma with a nice maltiness. Hoppy flavor with the same malty back. Nice beer.
4.4 Don't usually like this style, but this was a very nice beer. Rated this beer using a different program and unfortunately I'm not able to transfer my comments here.
3.7 22oz bottle from Party Town. Shared with friends. WTF? My black IPA has a brettanomyces infection. Has a citrusy, grapefruity nose. Flavor is lightly tart. Soft, tingly carbonation. More dry finish. Thankfully, the infection does not ruin the beer. It’s kind of fascinating, really, brett black IPA... Just totally unexpected. Mostly clear, dark red / brown color. Thin khaki head, good bits of lace. Some light roast malt, hint of coffee. Earthy hop. A lot of citrus character, that I think is probably from the brett. Moderate tart taste, light bitter, minimal sweet. Really interesting beer. It’s infected, but not in a bad way. Tastes like it’s intentionally supposed to be a brett black IPA, or black saison or something. Pretty refreshing.. black farmhouse ale.
3.5 Sampler at RFD. Draft->mini lager. Dark brown with white head. Roasted malt over pine hops. Bittersweet. Tasty.
3.5 Very good Black IPA with a great balance of roasted oats and toasted carmal malts and sweet fresh grapefruit and bitter hops. BEautiful nearly opaque black pour with a finger of beige head, The nose has roasted and oat malts as well as sweet citrus and grapefruits. Good balance with a nice bitter finish.
3.7 650ml bottle pours black in color with a 2 finger white head that leaves some decent lacing on the glass. Aroma is pine and citrus with some caramel and light roasted grains. Taste is a dark fruity and malty sweetness with a roasted grain with citrus and pine hop bitterness. Well balanced and quite tasty. Medium bodied with some nice carbonation leaving a pleasant sensation on the palate. Well done brew for the style and highly recommended.
3.5 Dark pour from bottle. Taste is smokey, with hints of pine, black tea and molasses. Nice.
3.3 Dark amber pour, fluffy tan head. Nose is roasted grain and floral hops. Bittersweet. Middle is cocoa, alcohol, chewy resin hops. Finish is slightly hop bitter. Pretty decent.
3.3 Bomber. Nice IPA taste and great appearance but I was hoping for a black IPA that had a touch more fruitiness like cranberry. It's above average but not outstanding.
