Laughing Dog Sneaky Pete Imperial IPA

Laughing Dog Sneaky Pete Imperial IPA

Sneaky Pete is a blend of five hop types: Simcoe, Glacier, Centennial, Vanguard and Hallertuaer, with Simcoe playing the dominate role at 30%. In addition, three separate malts were used: Honey Malt, Rye Malt, and Munich Malt. The brew has a copious aroma of white grapefruit, citrus overtones, a complex rich middle and long flavors in the finish; a real beauty. Finished with wild clover honey.

2.8 12-oz. bottle. Malt-heavy nose with caramel and rich toffee tones and a touch of hoppy pine resin. Deep sunset orange color. Sharp pine bitterness bites hard upon the first sip before a sweet orange flavor and a hint of honey temper it somewhat. Traces of alfalfa and old stale barley come into play. Slick mouthfeel with a very abrupt dry finish. Not very impressive at all.
4.3 On cask at Churchkey beer bar, D.C. It.looks great, smell is super west coast dipa piney, mouthfeel is smooth almost oily. Taste is a good balance between hops and malt. I’ve liked what I’ve had by Laughing Dog in the past and this is no exception. Would buy this again.
3.9 Poured from a 4 pack of 12 oz bottles purchased in MD a dark amber with minimal head. Aroma über sweet hops. Flavor is malty sweet with plenty of hops. Honey works here more than many other DIPA. A tasty brew
2.9 Big sweet malty aroma followed by a subtle hoppiness. There’s a LOT of malt like a huge syrup sweet farm of malt. Almost too much, this is rough. Tastes is maple syrup, brown sugar and alcohol. This probably sounds delicious to some but this isn’t my cup of ipa. It’s really sweet and almost cloying. I’m not sure about this one, I wish I could have it on draft to see if it’s better but right now the one I have is really sweet and tough to get through.
4.4 Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass. Aroma- A thick smelling blend of strong hops and a touch of malt, very good. Appearance- Pours a golden brown with a slight amount of haze. Has a medium off-white head. Taste- A big hop and yeast flavor that hides the high ABV. Really enjoyable. Palate- A heavy bodied beer with moderate carbonation, has a very creamy texture. Overall- A very good American DIPA, It is hard to find in Georgia but I would buy it again.
3.5 I like the beer, but it’s a bit sweet for me. The bear pours a bronze color into a goblet glass with a small head. The smell and taste are dominated by honey and citrus. The aftertaste is very smooth. It does not taste like it has 10% ABV at all, which makes it extra "sneaky"...
4.3 Aroma: honey, spruce, citrus, Appearance: clear gold, beige head Taste: honey, medium sweetness, medium bitterness, Palate: full body, creamy, soft carbonation, long finish, Delicious
3.7 Bottle. Pours a transparent amber with a thin ring of off white head. Aroma is interesting. Malty, hops, hints of rye. Taste of is similar to the aroma, with some added caramel.
3.2 This is a dark hoppy IPA that is smooth and filling. It is very hoppy and statifying. Nice aroma as well.
3.0 This was poured into a tulip. The appearance was a hazy burnt orange color with a slim finger’s worth of white foaminess that quickly dissipated leaving some stringy lacing roaming here and there. The smell had a decent sweet grapefruit with a slight grassiness and a decent caramel malt backbone. The taste copied the smell and brought in a slight extra citrus to give off a slight bittersweet appeal. A bitter citrus aftertaste leads to a quick dry caramel/citrus finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a more sipping quality about it. The carbonation seemed fairly rounded out, slightly smooth and didn’t have the expected punch that I wanted in a DIPA. Overall, at 10% and lack of harshness, I’m wondering if this was old. I didn’t see any date on the bottle, probably only have again if I knew it was fresh.
3.7 Draft sample at the Cherry Blossom Beer & Wine fest a week ago, orangy-amber color with off-white head. Aroma notes of grapefruity/citrus/herbal hops and caramel malt sweetness. Taste adds pine/resin, bread and faint honey sweetness. Moderate-heavy body, low-moderate carbonation, thick, dry, sticky with bitter grass/citrus hop finish. Nice strong DIPA.
3.9 Very tasty with good aroma of sweetness. Golden color, but without much head or lacing. It could use more carbonation. High alcohol content of 10%.
3.9 Light brown pour. Thin white head. Floral aroma. Sweet, raisiny taste throughtout. Enjoyed this and would buy it again.
3.8 On tap @ the brewpub, the first stop on TvM’s Bachelor Party Northwest Ale Trail Expedition. Light orange, average white head. Big aroma of candyish ripe tropical fruits, hints of Swedish Berries. Sweet palate, with loads of oily hoppy goodness, mango, papaya, ending with an intense bitterness, boozy undertones.
3.7 Burnt orange in color with frothy off-white head and lacing. Pine, resin, some hop spice, thick/sticky mouthfeel, some grapefruit. Decent. Strong.
4.1 Laughing Dog Sneaky Pete Imperial IPA has a thin, white head, a semi-clear, orange-gold appearance, and almost no lacing left behind. The aroma is of strong, caramel, and flowers (nectar). Taste is of white bread, bread crust, sweetness, high (yet, not harsh) bitterness, and hop oils. Mouthfeel is medium, and Laughing Dog Sneaky Pete Imperial IPA finishes on the dry side and drinkable (for a 10% ale). RJT
3.2 Aroma: Interesting. Baked apples, orange, molasses, Slight boozy smell. Appearance: Opaque, cloudy orange. Looks like unfiltered apple cider. Thin. Gorgeous, thick, creamy, coffee colored, two-finger head that disappeared slowly. Thick lacing. Taste: Bitter hops, sweet finish. Earthy. Slight tinge of alcohol in the front. Complex. Maybe some pine. Palate: Dry, bitter. Overall: I poured this 12 oz. bottle into a glass in which I like to drink beer. From aroma to taste, this is an interesting beer. I could not quite identify whether I liked this beer or not. I change my mind after each drink - it’s not good, then it’s wonderfully different. I would love to taste this on tap. RateBeer member nj_BierMaven probably summed up my indecision best, "Sweet malty almost like a Scoth Ale", without the booze. #respectbeerbrethren
3.6 Poured from the bottle, pours a amber, clear, minimal head, tan foam, medium bitterness, full body, average carbonation, bitter, long finish.
3.3 Bottle pour. Cloudy golden with an off white head. Citrus and pine aroma. Thick creamy body. Light hop taste, mostly grassy with some alcohol taste.
3.3 12 oz bottle from Total Wine & More - Gilbert, AZ. Orange and clear appearance with a white head and thick lacing. Aroma of herbal/floral hops, pine, light citrus, light toffee/caramel malts, resin and some off notes.. Heavily bitter with medium sweetness. Medium body with ample carbonation. Just OK for a IIPA.
2.9 Bottle dated 3/13, so 20 months old. Hop profile has been lost. Cloudy amber in tulip glass, no significant head. Sweet malty almost like a Scoth Ale. Need to find a fresh example. Still enjoyable if you like sweet strong and malty.
3.9 A darker maltier IPA. The spicy rye malt and sweetness of the honey dance around each other to citrus and pine hop notes. Very unique.
4.3 Dark brown, opaque with a brownish head. Very complex aroma of citrus, ripe yellow fruit, light caramel, cereal and some pines.Very well balanced IIPA, just a little bitter with nice residual sugar to top it. Lively carbonation, a little thin, astringent and a nice, long, smooth finish. Personally, more of an american BW, but still a really great brew!
3.5 12 ounce bottle poured into a brandy snifter. Pours a hazy amber with a big white head of thick foam. Good retention. The aroma is like sticky sweet rosemary and parsley. The taste is a bit cardboard-ish with notes of honey and english toffee. Dry and bitter toward the finish. Big body and medium carbonation.
3.8 12 oz bottle. Bottled on 6/25/14. At the Dobra Zupas, Beckley, WV. Cloudy amber colour with a tiny off-white head. The aroma is surprisingly mild... some floral hops, mild bitterness, sweetness and malt. The flavour hits the bank. Strong bitterness, sweet fruity, piney and resiny hops, sweetish maltiness and some alcohol warmth. Very tasty. All the 10% are very craftily hidden. And gotta love the label.
4.1 damn Lou...another winner! Wonderful bittersweet flavor with a slightly sticky body. Aroma was nice as well, though not as awesome as the flavor. tropical fruit(pineapple, peach), slight honey on the back end, bitter lingering finish. This beer would maybe be too bitter w/o the sweet, and vice-versa, but as it is - VERY nice! And at 10%, it kicked my butt quite nicely."
2.7 From notes. Tasted on 6/30/12 at the 1st Annual Chimipalooza, from bottle. Pours clear dark amber with an average white head that leaves a thin collar of lace. The nose is vegetal green hops with some caramel malt. The flavor is sweeter malt than I expected, with the same vegetal green hops that have a some nice bitterness. The body is medium with average carbonation and a long lightly bitter vegetal hops finish.
3.8 Bottle. Poured for me by server. Dark cooper color very small head. Aroma is slightly musty dried tropical fruit. Taste is sweet malt slight bitter. Followed by bitter fruit finish. Nice mouthfeel.
3.9 Pours hazy marmalade-orange w/ a palate that is full-bodied cooked marmalade. The balance hides its 10% ABV quite well. The aroma and the taste do not deliver much distinctive hop profile. Overall, this is for those DIPA drinkers who like a more malt than hop profile.
3.9 Deep copper color, head fades off quickly, slight lacing. Nicely done, boozy, double-boozy, strong, and wild. Lots of different ingredients, pretty fun beer!
