3.1On tap at P&P Charleston. Translucent black with small beige head. Aroma is roasted malt, medium body, medium carbonation, and little lacing. Taste is roasted malt, bourbon, herbal hops, and strong anise.
2.9Very little aroma to nothing, it pour was black with little head, taste of coffee- chocolate-no bourbon taste
3.522oz bottle. Pours a dark brown with a frothy tan head. Various flavor notes including coffee, chocolate, smoke and dark fruits. Also seemed to have a bit of a milk stout lactose sweetness and sourness as well. Kind of weird combo of flavors. This is good but didn’t like it as much as I had hoped.
3.6Bottle from Boise Co-op. Dark black pour, minimal head. Body is a bit thin, but all other characteristics are right on. Gentle aroma leads into richer and fuller taste, tons of roast grains. BBA elements a bit muted, but still a pretty solid RIS. One of the better ones from Idaho.
3.9Foamy dark tan head lingered for a solid 5 minutes with great lacing... expected black brew.
Nose has quite a bit of oak and whiskey notes that when cold dominated the dark malts and fruits.. this brew needs warmth to really shine. With warmth, coffee and cocoa start to come out alot more.
Flavors are pretty much the same as the aromas but they emerge a little sooner, but it still needs to really warm up to allow the malts to help balance the heady wood and bourbon.
Body seems a bit more thin compared to bottles of the regular I’ve had in the past. If my predictions are accurate, the bottles of these are going to need some time to meld.. but this was pretty enjoyable off tap.
3.622 oz bottle, PDT 11/14/14- Pours black with a tan head that retains nicely. Aroma is bourbon, unique wood aroma here, strong, malt, roasted. The taste is similar, odd wood taste, bourbon is noticeable but not intruding, dark berries, red wine like, almost tart, like some unintended bugs got in there. Different.
2.9Bottle. The pour is black. The aroma is an odd sour bourbon. The taste is also a little off, the stout even seems a little thin. Kinda boring.
4.5Black with a dark brown head. Aroma and taste of boubon and sweet chocolate. Finish is a little bitter. Pretty good.
3.9Poured a dark brown to black colour with a toffee head that left lacing. Aroma is sweet milk chocolate, roasted coffee, and warm bourbon. Taste is coffee upfront with soft notes of chocolate and burnt malts with the encompassing hints of bourbon. Medium full bodied with moderate carbonation and an assertive malt bitterness. Definitely a sipping beer. Strong bourbon notes are a feature which seems inviting on the nose, but aggressive on the tongue. Very boozy and quite a one timer.
3.8On tap. First thing that hits the nose is bourbon, wow. Didn’t realize it was the bourbon barrel stout when I ordered (didn’t say on menu), but obvious as soon as you pull it towards your lips. Pours thin and dark with little head. Taste is boozy, like pouring am imperial stout into a glass previously filled with bourbon. Good beer, they hit the mark with this one. The one to have when you’re only having one.
3.7Thinner dark brown with no real head. Big boozy aroma, some marshmallow and oak. Very boozy even for 11%, whisky and burnt coffee. Kind of a nice sipping beer but it’s too sweet and too boozy and too thin. So I guess it’s not? I don’t know I like it
4.3Bomber via UDbeernut. Black as amoonless prarie night. Thin, kinda wimpy head. But other than that pretty much everything good in this world in a glass of yummy. The nose was oaky and boozy....oh lions tigers and bears! Moochas grassyass!
3.7Pitch black pour with big burnt toast, woodsy barrel and some mint on the aroma. Has a little soapy note that i’m not enjoying either. Those burnt toast and coffee grounds are present in the palate, a bit of alcohol burn. Has a sort of boring character. Not bad but I was expecting more.
3.0On tap @ the brewpub, the first stop on TvM’s Bachelor Party Northwest Ale Trail Expedition. Okay, minus a point straight off for serving this in a schooner pilsener glass. Dark walnut brown, ring of white foam. Massive sweet rye aroma, eclipsing everything else. This is like smelling a bottle of Crown Royal! The same on the palate: hot, boozy sweet rye, with the base stout peeking out. Even with passing this around the group it remained unfinished.
3.6Bottle at home, picked up while visiting Jacksonville. Pours dark brown/black with a ruby edge and an off white head. Fairly grassy aroma, dark fruity rum stuff, licorice and treacle. Medium to full body, medium carbonation. Dark toffee, booze, licorice, light whisky, rum, hazelnut, lots of coca-cola and burnt toffee to finish. It’s a bit thin and the booze is slightly harsh but its OK.
3.3Draft pour into a Belgian tulip glass. Pours a near black with a beige head of foam. Good retention. The aroma is ashy and chocolate with some cigar character as well. Taste is sweet and ashy. As I drink it, I pick up more on the barrel. Big body and moderate carbonation.
3.6Aromas of bourbon, chocolate, some red wine, subtle burnt cherry, fennel. Black with a mostly lasting tan head, a little oily looking once the head fades. Dry, some astringency, earthy, woodsy, licorice and/or fennel flavors. Full bodied, boozy.
3.4Dark brown near black bother you with a viscous beige head. Burnt toffee, ripe plum, oak, vanilla, chocolate, roasted malt. Flavor is a bit lacking. Sweet, finishing with a slightly harsh tannic note. Middle of the road.
3.7Bottle from total wine JAX. Pours the part of any ole’ imply stout. Big bourbon nose. Taste is wood, vanilla, bourbon, anise. Lighter body than many BBRIS. Mild booze burn, over all decent.
3.8On tap at beer junction. It runs really hot. Lots of pepper and Mexican vanilla and some cinnamon. Lots of bourbon flavor but needs some time to rest.
2.8Draft. Jet black pour with little head. Aroma is chocolate and bourbon barrel. Taste has a bizarre Windex thing going on and also adds some prominent vanilla on the finish. Not sure what’s going on here.
3.9Salty toffee nose. Dark black with good legs. Bourbon cask aging provides a burnt caramel flavour with strong sweetness.
1.9Label date of 12.30.13.
Poured from a bomber into a tulip on 06.04.14.
A: 2 finger tan head that retains well. Midnight black body with some red at the bottom.
S: Vanilla, bourbon, and chocolate.
T: Vanilla, bourbon, and chocolate dominate. Fig, very slight roastiness, and cherry are subtle.
M: Creamy silk. Perfect carbonation. Not too chewy, just perfection.
O: This is a well rounded BBA stout. It has complexity and is perfectly balanced. There is some alcohol burn on the back end. This is regularly $5.99 to $6.99 in the Seattle area, which is an incredible value.
EDIT FOR 2014 EDITION: Bottled 11.04.14. Poured from a bomber into a chalice on 03.14.15.
A: Bourbon, mint, oregano, bay leaf, plastic, and some milk chocolate. Wat.
A: Midnight black body. 2 finger off white head that recedes to foam and a large ring.
T: Mint, plastic, oregano, and bay leaf dominate. Woodiness, slight bourbon, and char are subtle.
P: Smooth and creamy,
O: This was such a perfect beer last year. The bourbon is barely there now. Mint and plastic dominate and linger forever now. What happened? I thought that my palate was messed up, so I ate some crackers and the same terrible flavor was there in subsequent sips. 3 bottles tasted the same and went down the drain.
3.7Predicable. Yeah, it’s very bourbon, but the beer lacks some depth and body. The bourbon flavor is really on showcase here and really isn’t what I was looking for... aroma is bourbon with some roasted coffee notes. Taste is mostly bourbon with roasted coffee and faint vanilla.
4.0Black pour with thick small beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, vanilla and bourbon notes, Taste of roasted malts, espresso, sweetened chocolate, caramel, vanilla and a nice subtle bourbon finish. Full bodied, creamy mouthfeel, well balanced, excellent beer!
3.9Black pour. Fat beige head. Nice lacing. Coffee, cocoa. Initial bourbon noted that strengthens as it warms and lingers on the palate.
5.0Excellent bourbon barrel stout. Good on the pallet and a nice finish. Had it in draft at city tap in DC.
3.9Awesome stout, huge coffee notes along with a burnt malt flavour - the bourbon barrels give it a bite!
3.812oz tulip glass on tap at Beer Revolution’s Edmonton location pours black in color with a small light brown head which leaves spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma is bourbon, chocolate and coffee with some roasted grain notes. Taste is chocolate malty sweetness with a roasted grain bitterness and citrus hop bitterness. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. A well crafted brew that is a good example of the style and definitely recommended.
