Lazy Magnolia Deep South Pale Ale

Lazy Magnolia Deep South Pale Ale

Deep South Pale Ale is Lazy Magnolia’s Pale Ale, a crisp and clean beer with the perfect balance of hops and malt. Its body and clean finish are ideally suited for all seasons, and the brew is moderately hopped for a great aroma and impressive finish. Deep South Pale Ale doesn’t fit into any category of Pale Ale, it’s a style we made up!

The Story

Deep South Pale Ale, formerly know as Reb Ale, was Lazy Magnolia’s first recipe designed to accommodate one, specific location. It was brewed in recognition of the overwhelming support of the Oxford, Mississippi market, home to the University of Mississippi. Oxford is a special place, deeply rooted in history and a vibrant center for the arts and Southern culture. Because of our consistent growth into new distribution areas, we had to change the name to accommodate our expanding. The label may not say Reb Ale anymore, however, we rebelled against style standards to come up with our own Deep South Pale Ale to make a beer for the rebel in all of us.

3.5 12 oz bottle. Misty orange brown with white froth. Nose is orange peel, honey and faint pine. Crisp and clean, showing some substance for a Pale. Taste is lemon pith, orange and clover with a papery finish. Nice to know there’s something worth drinking if i ever find my way to Mississippi.
3.9 Bottle - labelled "Deep South Pale Ale" - via Ale in the Mail. Light copper color - mostly clear. Mostly hoppy aroma. Very good - very hoppy. Hoppiness is actually more like an IPA than a regular pale ale.
3.4 Bottled as Deep South Pale Ale. Pours burnt orange with a small off white head. Aroma is tropical citrus, grass and some hay. Taste is sweet with mild bitters. Medium bodied.
3.2 Bottle. Caramel malt and piney orange hops aroma. Slightly hazy orange with a large ivory head. Piney-herbal-orange hops, and bready caramel malt flavor. Body on the light side of medium, average carbonation.
3.0 Bottle, labeled as Deep South Pale Ale. Aromas are light, but caramel and malt and a bit of citrus. A little buttery before the bitterness from the hops set in. The carbonation is a bit too high.
2.6 bottle very little aroma considering it was dry hopped no date so i cant tell how old other than that it tastes decent I think im getting spoiled by other beers that are considered pale ales that are hoppier than typical ipas
2.4 Bottle:   Amber, thin sudsy white head, no lacing.   Smells like stale... carpet padding and basement.   Oy vay...   Just a little bit of maltiness on the tongue, slight biscuit and nutty notes.   Thankfully tastes better than it smells.   Not sure about any hops.   If I take too big of a sip, I get the carpet padding and basement on the tongue.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Finishes very stale, and with a mineral water background.   Overly oxidized?   Yeah, not a fan.   Thanks for the chance to try this one Bill!
3.5 Slightly hazed, yellow-gold, short, thick off-white head. Pine, resiny, malty aroma. Malty, barley, orange peel taste. Pretty good.
3.6 Bottle. Pine, orange peel, and malt aroma. Golden yellow with moderate head. Sweet barley malt and moderately bitter pin/orange peel flavor. Nice hoppy APA.
3.0 Growler Appearance: Clear light amber with foamy white head Aroma: Not much to pick up Taste: Palate: Fairly carbonated, dry, fairly bitter finish Overall: Good drinkability, although the bitterness really sticks out in a fairly light package.
2.9 Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a bright orange-copper color with a medium sized foamy orange-white head that left a bit of lacing. The aroma was herbal and spicy with a bit of fruity hops. The flavor was bitter, tangy and fruity with a citric acid element. Medium length bitter, tangy and citric finish. Medium body. Ok.
2.4 From bottle, as Deep South Pale Ale. Decent hoppy aroma with a little skunk and caramel. Rich amber clear with off-white foamy lacing head. Medium body with medium carbonation. Starts dry with medium hop bitterness, grainy malt notes and an astringent oxidized bitter quality. Light bit of soap. Finish is medium bitter with lasting astringent bitter after.
3.5 Bottle, labeled as Deep South Pale Ale. Pours golden-amber with a massive head of bright white foam. Not much of an aroma. This drinks with a unique character ... this is a fairly "normal," well made craft ale ... but there’s almost a pumpkin-y spiciness lingering in the background ... can’t quite place it. I’d drink more. (#5035, 5/25/2013)
2.7 12oz bottle from ABC on Betton. Gold-brown pour with a thin off-white head that leaves a ring. Aroma is malty, bread and caramel. Tastes are grainy, citrus, malt, bread, grass and caramel. Palate is on the thin side. Grass in the finish too.
2.8 Amber in color with an average white head. Aroma is of dry leaves, malt, cardboard. Taste is malt, grain, crisp, grass, leaves.
3.0 Bottle poured into a small plastic cup in my hotel room. Nice pale amber with a persistent white head. Aroma is lightly grassy and citrusy, but also with a good deal of cereal and cardboard. Taste is assertively malty with just a slight hop bite. Easy drinking, but not great.
3.8 a nice and fruity brew with sugary and syrupy flavors of peach and a hint of apricot. the beer has more than enough malt and bitter hop profile in grapefruit to keep it nice and beery. frothy and complex i found this to be a perfectly charming pale ale strong enough to be a good ipa. exactly what one who knows would hope for in a Southern brew.
3.0 Bottle from Mom's Liquor Cabinet. Light orange pour with a big white head. Aroma sweet spice, brown sugar, and oranges. Taste is bitter, light spice, and almost fruity.
2.1 hop taste of grapefruit and pine probably shiuld be ipa. ok malt taste mainly hop forward
2.8 From bottle. Pours an amber color. Small head. Aroma was grassy hops, bread and cardboard. Taste followed with some malt but the rest of the flavors did not contribute well.
3.1 Bottle at EVO as Deep south. Hazy amber, medium white head. Aroma of biscuit and hay. Taste is weak straw. OK.
2.2 Appearance: golden clear color, medium sized off white head Aroma: slight grassy smell, faint smelling, wheat? Taste: hoppy, grassy, hint of malt sweetness Palate: some froth on the tongue, lingering bitter aftertaste Overall: a bit too hoppy for me, reminds me of an IPA, hops are all the flavor, if you like IPA’s this is for you
2.4 (bottle of Deep South PA) - watered down rust color with a minimal head. The nose is grassy and the taste is a little on the metallic side. I definitely detected the dry hops but it just has a weird metallic taste to it.
2.4 12oz bottle. Clear light amber with a nice white head. Fairly inoffensive beer overall - some light citrus hops and dry malt, mild body and decent carbonation, easy to drink with not much to it.
3.8 This beer is much better than its ratings. Crisp, slightly sweet and thick on the palate. Deep yellow color, nice head, and a balanced bitterness.
3.0 Bottle from ldhughes3 many thanks. Pours light orangey amber capped by a small off white head with fair retention. Nose of pine, grapefruit, and malt. Taste follows in order. Body is thin if not watery. A new state tick, worth it for that.
2.5 Bottle from central market. Pours a clear golden color with a bubbly white head. Aroma is grainy, a bit sour, and a touch of sweet. Flavors much the same with a bit more sour and family refreshing on the finish. A touch of dry also.
2.9 Pours a clear amber with a thin, white head with moderate lacing. Aromas of fruity hops, yeast, and is somewhat woody. There’s a decent balance between the hops and malts and it does have a nice clean finish, but it doesn’t do much else to impress me. It’s a nice crisp beer, but just another run of the mill APA.
3.5 On tap at Mellow Mushroom. Pours a clear golden color. aroma of hops and citrus. Slightly bitter beer. Finishes well. I like this beer.
2.8 Golden/orange beer with a thin, white head. Aromas of floral hops. Tastes of flowery hops, some grass notes, tiny hints of grapefruit, and some caramel. Not much malt here. Hoppy finish. Refreshing, but just a bit bland.
