Left Hand Chainsaw Ale (Double Sawtooth)

Left Hand Chainsaw Ale (Double Sawtooth)

Many times we’ve heard, more is not always better.
Chainsaw is a connoisseur version of our award-winning Sawtooth Ale, designed to befuddle silly generalizations about life. This Double ESB pours a brilliant deep ruby amber with a rocky near white head. The nose opens with bright spicy and herbal hops, with hints of dried fruit and port. The flavor starts with a chewy, bready malt and hints of brulee and kola nut that are suddenly swept away by thyme-like and hoppy bitterness. The strong herbal flavors then give way to a dry finish of licorice, gentian, and Italian bitters. We hope you enjoy!

3.9 Bottle. Archer Road Beer Stop, Sheffield. Lightly hazy amber. Thin, off white head. Jammy and bready. Light toffee. Some dried fruit. Taste is toffee sweet, with fruity dryness. Soft chew on the palate. Soft carbonation, too. The booze is well hidden. Light, lingering, orange zest bitter finish. Very decent.
2.0 Another dipass CoLOLorado rew. Tevs. Bomber. Pours a light brown with a light tan head. Aromas of cardboard and sweaty neckbeards. Taste is sweet and lightly bitter. Flavors of wet paper, toffee, bread. Finishes on a note of garbage. No wonder people leave this state and go searching all over Germany for rare lagers. FFS.
3.7 22 ounce bottle purchased at Total Wine Pembroke Pines, FL for $8.99 Very good.
3.2 Sampled on draft at The Headkeeper this beer poured a dark nut brown color with a large foamy tan head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was somewhat faint with bitter fruity hops, grapefruit and a bit of caramel. The flavor was caramel, wood, bitter fruits, grapefruits, beech and cedar. Long woody and grapefruit finish. Moderately full bodied. Ok.
3.4 on tap @ Party Town / Florence KY --- Hazy dark amber, bubbly rim head, dots of lace. Taste is bitter malt that bends a little toward sweet in the palate, before adding alcohol and bittering to finish. Like a Barleywine, but less sweet. Dangerously drinkable.
3.8 On tap @ Blacksburg Taphouse. Served in snifter. Pours a mahogany color with minimal head (glass nearly completely full with beer to rim). Head is khaki colored. Aroma - malty, caramel, citrus and some resin. Taste is initially dominated by malt, then resiny hops come in, leading to a long finish where the hops slowly fade leaving a bit of malt/caramel and a touch of an alcohol burn. Mouth feel is a bit oily.
3.9 From a bomber. Pours a medium amber and makes a white head. Some lacing. Not a strong aroma, but a bit of hops and dark fruit. Tastes like an ESB with a bit of malt and a bit of hops. I like this beer.
3.5 750 mL bottle. Different label than the one pictured. I really don’t get a lot from this.Fruit in the nose. Booze in the taste.
3.8 Transfer from BA review on 9-19-12 - Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass Appearance – Pours a brown colored brew with a small off white head. The head that was there faded quickly to leave a wisp on the surface of the beer with very light lacing on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma was heaviest o f a sweeter caramel, some chocolate and faint aromas of a dark fruit nature. Mixed with these are a herbal and slightly earthy hop flavor as well. Taste – The taste begins of sweeter dark fruit and caramel with flavors of a nutty and chocolate nature. As the taste advances, hop flavors begin entering the flavor profile. An earthy and floral hop taste begin coming into the taste as some of the caramel sweetness fades. At the end of the taste, the hop flavors, now with a light grapefruit flavor as well, get stronger while the nutty flavor present from the start picks up a tad in intensity to leave a pleasant bittered sweet nut flavor on the tongue. Quite nice. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is above average in terms of creaminess and thickness with the carbonation level rather average. It suits the flavor profile quite nicely and makes for a nice easy drinking brew. Overall – Fairly nicely hopped brown ale. It starts sweet and finishes more hoppy but does so with a nice smooth transition.
4.0 22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 6/10/2014. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy deep ruby red color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, floral, grass, caramel, toast, toffee, brown sugar, raisin, light roast, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/pine/grassy hops and moderate dark/bready malt sweetness; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, floral, grass, caramel, toast, toffee, brown sugar, raisin, light roast, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Good amount of pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, citrus peel, pine, grass, caramel, toast, toffee, brown sugar, raisin, light roast, and herbal/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity and balance of citrus/pine/grassy hops and dark/bready malt sweetness; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a smooth, moderately crisp/sticky, and lightly slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice imperial ESB style. All around great balance and complexity of citrus/pine/grassy hops and dark/bready malts; and very smooth and crisp to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.
3.6 Dark amber/cider color; Medium creamy body; Aroma of caramel malt, hops, & some spice; Flavor of sweet malt, caramel/toffee, hops, dark fruit, and some spice; Warm finish; Pretty decent actually.
3.4 Got this Bottle in W. Lafayette. Deep amber color, nice head, plenty of Malts but not much hops to balance so Ok for strong ale but not an ESB.
3.4 Pours a dark reddish brown with a thin light tan head. The aroma seems to be of dried fruit but not real pungent. Taste of dried fruit going into hops with some bitterness hanging around. Its a good beer I would drink again but probably not buy because of all that’s left untasted.
3.5 On tap at Tapwerks. Pours a clear amber with a tan head that dissipates to the edges and laces. Aroma has a strong grain note with light resin, a bit of pine and a touch of booze. Flavor has grain and resin with some earthy pine in the finish.
3.9 a very good, well balanced beer; amber color; floral hop and caramel malt aroma; nice hop profile with bready, caramel malt and fruit notes
3.6 Aroma is malts, fruit, toffee and leather. The flavor is fruit, malts, toffee, slightly coarse texture, slight liquor notes, mild alcohol and a tangy/sour finish.
2.7 Look: pours a dark amber. White head. That hangs around. Smell: malt. Piney hops. Taste: pine. Caramel malts. Feel: very dry. Medium carbonation. Overall: not terrible. But not what I thought it would be.
3.3 Tap pour from Happy Gnome. Rich mahogany with a creamy head. Aroma is dark fruit...plum. Definitely hits you with bitter notes at the onset and throughout. Some malty characteristics but not a ton of sweet going on. Finish is interesting...lots of bitter...kind of enjoyable...not something I want to have again though. Falls short of similar varieties. Better available.
3.2 Clear dark amber pour, foamy frothy head lasting a while. Lace. Aroma had a mix of malty and hops fruit/herbal light pine. Somewhat nutty with burnt caramel, mineral. Taste is smooth and matly with burnt nutty caramels. Sharp pine herbal bitter. Some heat and astringentness, minerally burton esb quality. Dry kinda boozy.
3.2 Bomber, 2014 vintage. Spicy hop aroma with sweet caramel malt notes. Pours amber-ruby colored with a thin off-white head and decent lacing. Starts with a sweet caramel as well as some nuttiness. Finishes dry with spicy floral hop flavors as well as a bit of bitterness and alcohol. Pretty good.
3.7 22oz bottle, from Dutch’s. Shared with Tarra K. Mostly clear dark red color. Kind of hazy with lots of chunky particles inside. Thin off-white head. Dots and ropes of lace, kinda loose. Looks solid. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, kind of soft, lighter carbonation. More dry finish. Toasty malt, lightly spicy. Dark fruit, some earthy hop. Moderate to bigger bitter taste, moderate sweet. Light bit of alcohol heat, but it’s otherwise well-hidden. Pretty solid tasty stuff, it works well.
3.2 Bomber. Pours nice, deep amber, with a dense, medium light golden-white head (not rocky nor near-white as in the bottle description) , very nice retention and lacing though. Nose is heavy caramelly malts with whiffs of orange, Juicy Fruit gum, Mouth is medium-full bodied, medium sweet and bready, caramel, apricots, oranges, pound-cake, some honey and vanilla. Hops are kinda lacking. Decent, but not really remarkable.
3.5 Bottle at home from early backlog notes. Pours a slightly hazy amber copper color with a medium sized off white head. The aroma and flavor have sweet caramel, ripe fruits, some background yeast, toasted bread, lightly nutty with mild to moderate spices. Good, not great.
3.0 Hazy dark orange copper. Thick TA head. Big malty hoppy nose. Smooth sweet, full bodied. Well balanced
3.8 75 cl bottle @ HBF, Rated on 21.05.2010 Aroma is sweetish with fruity hops and some caramel. Flavour is sweetish with caramel, some vanilla, spices, fruits and hops. And an ”American Strong Ale” ‐feeling. Good!
3.6 Amber in color, clear with a thin head. Big malt and hops flavor. A very nice Strong ale.
3.5 Draught. Pours a relatively clear amber color with a smallish head on it. Nose and taste are both fairly malty, yet has a bit of a bite to it. Very interesting drink...
3.4 Pours dark amber with off white head. Aroma is citrus, floral caramel and toast. Taste is sweet with moderate bitters. Somewhat warming finish.
3.7 Tap at the Stagshead as part of left hand night. Pours copper with white head and a sweet candy nose. Tastes of burnt caramel, cherries, vanilla, woody, ginger, wet leaves, malt, and grapefruit. Some alcohol warming but nice
3.7 On tap at Bennos. Pours reddish brown with a fine off-white head, some nice lacing. Aroma has pine, southern comfort and toffee. Taste is of cherries, a woodiness, some grassy hops and alcohol. Finishes with some length; sweet and syrupy, with alcohol. Complex and nice!
