Left Hand Sawtooth Ale

Left Hand Sawtooth Ale

Sawtooth Ale is an English style Extra Special Bitter. It is an extremely well balanced beer, with significant hop character, medium body, and a maltiness which increases in evidence as the beer warms to its "proper" drinking temperature. . The water used is quite hard, bringing it to near Burton on Trent levels, keeping it true to the style. This gives it the appropriate character and improves the malt extract significantly.

3.4 Creamy nose, full bodied and malty, light spicy character, but smooth and smooth, more like a cream ale.

3.2 Tap at Mother Kelly’s, 9th March 17. Pours brown, aroma is malt, bread, slight spice. Taste is malty, some hop, quite nice flavour. Not bad
2.7 The mysterious ESB style. Haven’t had many, never liked any. I bought this thinking it was a nitro, which may have improved things somewhat... but it isn’t. Aroma of lemon and malt, bottle into nonic, no foam, low carbonation, kind of flat, dull orange look to it. Flavor is not exciting at all, bland, flat, weak... I do get the hard water thing. Have to say, based on limited experience, that I just don’t care for this style of beer. Of course, if I was once again cycle touring in England and this was what was on at the local, I’d have no trouble hoisting a few. Inoffensive, but far from exceptional.
3.0 Keg at Mother Kelly’s. It pours a clean golden color with a small white head. Aroma is pale bread, light oats, malts, grassy hops. Taste holds some more faint grassy hops and biscuity malts. Medium bodied with good carbonation. Overall, meh
3.0 Pint. Amber poor woth a thin white head- poor retention. Aroma of herbal / grassy hops, caramel. Taste is balanced. Flavours are light malt not a lot of hop flavours. Fine.
2.7 On tap at St. Augustine’s, pours a clear copper orange with a small white head. Aroma brings out bready malt, a touch of toasted caramel and light hop resins. Flavour is very restrained, with subtle notes of resinous hops and toasted malt. Solid balance, just missing oomph.
2.4 deze extra special bitter is wel voller van smaak dan de normale bitter , de middelmatige bitterheid haalt de zacht mout tonen wat op en geven lichte hints van caramel, biscuit en bloemige hop alle wel wat vaag
3.0 The aroma has a citrus hint but is faint. The appearance is a clear amber with a very thing cream head. Taste is mild maybe a little weak. Easy to drink, overall meh....
2.8 Bottle. Pours red with thin tan head. Mild aroma of caramel malt and floral hops. Light sweet taste. Metallic, medium bitter finish. Not a great bitter.
3.4 Nice clean bread and malt aroma with light sweet notes. Pours a pale clear reddish brown with a thin tan head of small bubbles. Tastes of mild hops and balanced bread malt notes. Nothing overpowering. Plenty of carbonation. Very drinkable.
3.8 Clear, deep gold pour with a frothy white head. The aroma is malty with some mild, spicy hop notes. It has a medium, crisp body with lively carbonation. The taste is mildly bitter with a smooth, balanced finish.
3.4 Bottle. Amber color with a thin quickly dissipating white head. Herbal and earthy aroma with some caramel malt in the taste.
2.6 Pours a nice clear copper from a bottle, quickly dissipating slightly off-white head. Aroma of caramel and whole wheat cracker. Flavor is surprisingly hoppy given the aroma. A little watery. Okay beer.
3.6 On nitro. Clear and amber with a rich creamy head. Low aroma. Tasty malt flavors. Nutty and caramel. Easy drinking and clean ferment
2.8 Not a bad Bitter, had it on tape served a bit too cold, too much head and very little aroma. I’m sure it would be much improved if it had been aged in wood cask and drawn with a hand pump instead of gassed, but sadly this is America but I can dream of a nice pint of Hook Norton while drinking this.
3.1 From the tap at Constant Spring. Amber with very thin white head. Not much to the nose. Sweet malt, carmel and a little tangy. Tasted better as it warmed up. Nice and smooth, didn't linger on the palate. Good beer, so I had another.
2.4 Bottle -Pours medium amber, thin white head. Mild, er weak nose of breads, subtle fruit. Citrus peeling. Doughy. Slight hops after. Dry finish.
2.2 Pours an amber color with a thin quickly disappearing head......aroma is nearly non existent, maybe some sweet maltiness......taste is thin, ver slight bitterness, touch of minerals in the back end, maybe chalk? Maybe it tastes better at 10,000 feet than it does at sea level, but I’m at sea level.
1.6 Pours dark amber with little foam. The aroma is a very, very, very mild. I honestly can’t come up with anything to say about the aroma. The flavor is mild, too. Like a very heavily diluted English bitter. Creamy mouthfeel. Meh.
3.1 Nitro version bottle pour into nonic pint glass from One Stop Market. Aroma is bread and strong musty smell--like a dusty old couch. Appearance is clear copper with slowly floating tiny bubbles (like dust in bright sunlight), thin white foamy head with poor retention (maybe I didn’t pour hard enough or perhaps because after opening it I got distracted for a couple minutes before pouring?) and no lacing. Taste is malty bread with bitter finish. Palate is medium bodied with thick, creamy texture, soft carbonation and dry, mildly bitter finish. Overall, didn’t really do it for me. Not much here and what was here is pretty forgettable.
4.1 Sawtooth Ale has a medium, frothy, off-white head, a clear, bubbly, amber appearance, and spider-web lacing left behind. The aroma is of very subtle lemon, bread crust, and generalized malt, and the flavor is of those elements, with a mellow back-end bitterness. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Sawtooth Ale finishes dry and exceedingly drinkable. RJT
1.8 Tried the Nitro version. Pours a golden brown with a foamy white head that lingers in the glass. Smells vaguely of hops and malt. Taste is similar. Hints of malt and hops briefly visit but are fleeting and quickly fade away, replaced with bland mildness. Drinks very smoothly with very light carbonation. Nitrogen certainly didn’t help this beer.
4.0 Pours clear brownish orange with a thin head. Aroma is herbal, lightly fruity, hint of malt. Taste is sweet malt, a bit of hops kick. Light easy to drink mouthfeel.
3.2 Rich amber color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of caramel malt, hops, & fruit; Flavor of sweet malt, caramel/toffee, herbal hops, and some fruit; Finish is slightly bitter; Decent.
3.9 This ESB is not too bitter but definitely extra special. Pours a nice amber hue with a decent head retention. Sweet Malty backbone with a smooth finish.
4.1 Copper in color, aroma has notes of caramel and biscuits with slight hops. Taste is sweet and malty, with slight bitterness on the finish
3.4 Aroma: Sweet and malty, Appearance: Vivid amber/bronze color, beige off-white head with good retention. Taste: Medium sweet and medium bitter; well-balanced flavor. Palate: Medium body, average carbonation, lingering finish. I appreciate that Sawtooth Ale is a beer that can be both complex and simple. If you are searching for intricacies and details in this beer you will find them, or if you are looking to enjoy a handful of beers without being overwhelmed with sensory aspects it is also great for that.
3.9 Overall a delicious beer for its style. Enjoyed in a chilled glass last night. Great reddish/brown color with a decent head on it. Finished with a sweet, malty taste that isn’t overbearing. Will definitely be having more of these!
3.1 Hop forward with a malt backbone. Great amber color with notes of caramel. Solid gateway beer.
