1.9 Snifter from bottle. A: almost no nose. I can’t detect anything. App: beautiful very dark amber. Small dark tan head that disperses rather quickly. T: taste of copper on the front. And a slightly bitter, bland carmel flavor. Mostly lingering copper aftertaste. P: nice bubbles from front through the back. Even goes down bubbly. Shiner is twice a good and much more easily found!
4.0 This has a nice dark color with a fragrant coffee aroma. The coffee comes through in the taste, as well. It’s almost porter-like in that respect. A somewhat shocking and pleasant find from Leinie’s.
3.0 Dark brown/red...small tan head. The roasted malts give it an initially off-putting scent at first whiff.. a little "gassy" if you will. It subsides after a bit. Taste is heavily malted, nuts, chocolate, caramel.....a little watery.....not too bad.
3.3 12 oz bottle pours amber with a off white head. Aroma of roasted malt. Taste is basically malt and a hint of hops.
2.5 Tap at Airport Miller Brew House today. Dark orangish brown pour with some head. Not much for aroma, maybe some malt and hops. Taste was weak but some caramel/malt with a slight bitter finish. Slight carbonation and light to medium body.
2.3 Pretty nice pour from twist-off into Boston Lager glass. Head is off-white, about 1" or so, atop a reddish brown beer. Aroma is extremely metallic at first, but this mellows out a bit. Flavor is rich and malty; pretty good bock flavor. Good balanced palate. Finish pretty nutty, and persists. Not as good as the German masters, but I’m still ok with these in the Leinie mix pack.
2.5 12oz bottle poured into a shaker. Aroma is only roasted malt. Nuts, caramel and a very little coffee. Taste is about the same, very malt oriented. Overall, it’s ok. I’m glad it’s only a seasonal.
3.7 Tasted from bottle into nucleated pint glass. Pours a beautiful clear, full copper color with creamy, lasting beige foam. Clean, toasty, and mildly hoppy aroma. Delicious flavors of bread, biscuits, caramel, nutty toffee, some roasted barley. Light body with well-rounded mouthfeel. Crisp and refreshing lager finish. So good.
3.6 Appearance: Brown, dark amber light spilling through the edges. Light and small head. Aroma: Coffee comes through first, with a sweetness. More caramelly than toasted. Taste: Roasty flavors as it goes in, caramel in the mouth, with a lighter toasted malt finish. Mouthfeel: Rich without being thick, with light carbonation coming up from the tongue. Drinkability: Reasonably high, in my opinion. I could drink this happily as a session beer. The flavor isn’t overpowering, but generally pleasant.
2.5 Bottle. A hint of caramel with a very slightly hoppy finish. Okay but nothing spectacular.
3.0 Of the line of Leinenkugel beers, this one is my favorite! When poured I would compare it to looking like a fine cherry Dr. Pepper (without all that carbonation!!). The head is very robust and tan-colored with some nice lacing as you enjoy the beer. The flavor is just a nice smooth roasted flavor; nothing overbearing nor standout-ish. For a beer that’s not too complex I find this one very satisfying; one to be enjoyed over and over!
2.7 Appearance: deep garnets and mahogany under a light tan head which fades into a thin collar corralling a puddle of foam. Swirls thick along edges but no lace. Nose: smoky, meaty, and a little spicy; like a dry rub. Pumpernickel sticks. Twigs and sticks crackling over a clean hot fire. Brittle along edges. Apple and plum skins, black cherries. Palate: clean and smooth with raisins, plums, and prunes – dried. Smoke and pumpernickel mingle. Fresh black cherries in the back. Treacle. Chewy and bready yet smooth and sweet. Twigs and sticks linger back of throat. Smoky in the middle all the way through the finish. Touch figgy. Final Thoughts: not too shabby. Better than I was expecting; I enjoyed the 1888 Bock from first sniff to last quaff. Tasty.
2.0 This beer is really pretty decent, but still nothing much to it. I like some more complexity.
3.0 Bottle pours copper with a khaki head. Aroma is sweet with notes of caramel, nuts, light chocolate, and a touch of earth. Flavor shows the same with additional roasted character. Overall body is light to moderate, somewhat sweet, and a little cloying.
2.6 12oz bottle. Pours a rusty amber color with a two finger foamy off white head. Aroma mostly of toasted caramel malt, biscuts, with faint chocolate and nut.Flavor is pretty much sweet caramel malt. A thin smooth mouthfeel, and body.
2.4 12oz Bottle. A very mellow bock with a nutty and a slight caramel after taste which is very enjoyable.
2.6 Refrigerated bottle poured into a shaker. Pours medium brown with crimson highlights and medium beige head that fades fairly quickly. Medium carbonation, medium lacing, and medium body. Taste is toasty malt, nuttyness, and a hint of caramel.
3.2 [3695-20110416] 355mL bottle. Roasted grainy bread grains aroma has a little floral toffee hint. Clear, golden molasses body with a foamy off-white head. Toasted bread crusts flavour is a little sweet. Medium body. Drinkable. (6/3/7/3/13) 3.2 Overheard: "Another time, another day, another Baltic." (c/o RadekKliber, w/ him, jerc, JoeMcPhee, Sammy)
2.9 12 oz Bottle. Appearance is ruby-ish brown with slight, off-white head. Aroma is roasted malts and caramel. Taste is similar with the roasted malts and caramel sweetness the main notes with a very slight citrus flavor as well. Palate is medium-bodied, slick texture, flat carbonation, and a weak finish. Only a pale representation of the original style.
3.4 Situation:Celebrating the wonders of taste and smell after fending off allergies and sickness... Glassware: Celebrator Doppelbock... Appearance: chestnut brown body with an off-white head that holds still... Aroma: hints of pine intermingle with punchy malts and a bit of bubblegum sugar--appealling... Palate: smooth, medium-bodied and sippable--substantial but not overwhelming... Taste: malty presence; a bit syrupy and gummy, harkening to a malt liquor served by the 40 oz...some fruity hints round out the aftertaste, inviting another sip... Overall: A mellow, understandable interpretation of the style. I like to think of Leinenkugel’s as a more experimental version of the East’s German beer beast, Yuengling. I haven’t been let down by Leinie’s yet, and this bock, though unspectacular, makes for a nice March night’s companion...
2.9 Bottle. Poured a dark brown with a pretty decent head. The aroma was burnt malts and nuts. The flavor was very malty and roasty with slight hints of chocolate and caramel. Pretty thin on the mouthfeel. Overall not bad, but just a little too watery and drowned out.
2.8 bottle. Pours dark brown to black, but clear enough you can see through. Tan head. Nose is of banana, bread and caramel. Taste is of roast malt. Mouthfeel is medium-thin and dry. Meh
2.1 This beer is typical of the species of pedestrian pisswater the local roughnecks drink after their shift in the coal mines south of Arkham -- no doubt to drown out the maddening memories of ancient monstrosities accidentally awoken from an aeons long slumber far beneath the earth. It pours a dark reddish brown with some lovely tan foam, but the taste is thin and tinny. Blech. I shall shew the remainder of this foul beverage to the drainplug.
3.0 Pours dark amber with malt hits right up front. You get full hint of the grains and a big drive of the chocolate malt near the finish.
3.1 12oz bottle in a snifter. Pours dark brown with a lacy, light beige head. Aroma of caramel and roasted malts, light citrus hops, and a little bit of dough. Flavor about the same with a little of roasted malts and hops on the finish. Average texture. A sort of weird beer for this style, but not terrible.
2.9 On Draught. Thin, brown watery pour led me to believe before tasting this would be mediocre at best, and I was correct. Aroma of faint caramel and grain with some citrus. Stale sweet malt finish.
3.7 Leinenkugel’s 1888 Bock is a crystal clear, deep coppery red lager with a pretty dense, light khaki head that fades to a sturdy, splotchy film and leaves outstanding lacing on the glass. It has a toasty aroma with a malty sweetness. It smells like caramel. It’s medium bodied and foamy. The finish is pretty dry and crisp and the mouth is left just the slightest bit silty. It’s pretty lightly flavored, but well balanced. It’s pretty toasty and there’s a good amount of caramel with a touch of sweetness. There’s a slight hint of wooden bitterness at the finish. Wow, I’m really impressed that A-B is offering me a beer this drinkable! I could have more than one of these!
2.7 Bottle 355 ml Aroma: smoky, woody nose. Grainy malty top. Pleasant. 6+ Appearance: garnet, amber clear with large creamy top. Good. 4- Palate / Taste: medium light bodied. Earthy, malty in character. Dry barley roast , slight nutty feel. Soil like earthy end. Bock that has 5% who knew?
3.1 2011-04-17. Crisp red-brown body small beige head. 3+ Sweetish aroma, lightly grainy, toasty malt. 6+ Flavour is on the sweet side, toasted bread, molasses hints, caramel. Dryish finish. 6+ Average plus palate. Okay. Bottle shared by Radek
