Leinenkugels Big Eddy Russian Imperial Stout

Leinenkugels Big Eddy Russian Imperial Stout

The Big Eddy Russian Imperial Stout was brewed at Leinenkugel’s tiny 10th street brewery in Milwaukee. This brew boasts a selection of 11 malts and grains balanced by three different and distinct hops. Dark and complex, with chocolate tones and notes of dark fruits, it is daring yet delicious. Travels well. Ages well.

3.2 Bottle. Pours a dark brown with medium tan head that lasts. The aroma is chocolate, roast, smoke. Thin mouth, chocolate, light roast, good.
4.0 Pours a very dark brown almost black like oil, thick, with khaki colored head. Roasted malt and cocoa on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with a little sweetness rounded out with a raw cocoa like bitterness.
4.3 On tap at Bangers & Lace. Poured black with a nice mocha head. Aroma was heavy in roasted malts and also had a noticeable scent of prunes and dates. Taste is rich and sweet with some bitterness to balance it out. Full body, smooth on the palate with good carbonation. Really enjoyed this one, quite delicious.
4.0 Poured from bottle thanks Willrunforbeer. Color is deep black with a thin tan head. Aromas of malt alcohol chocolate and licorice. Taste is very smooth full of deep roasty malts caramel and chocolate.
4.1 12oz bottle picked up while I was in Vegas. Pours coca cola brown with an off white head. Aroma is dark molasses, licorice. Flavor follows. Molasses, raisin, licorice. Good balance, nice and smooth.
4.2 Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12 oz bottle into a tulip glass. 9.5% abv and a very brief description of the beer. Appearance: Very dark used motor oil like pour. Looks Black in the glass and has a small dark tan head. It fades out quickly leaving a light ring. Some lacing on the glass. Smell: It has a slightly lighter nose than I was expecting but still full of dark roasted maltiness and earthy hops. Taste/Palate: It is full of deep roasted maltiness caramel like sweetness and a touch of prune. The finish bring some hop bitterness and and mild dry earthy tones. Overall it remains fairly sweet.
5.0 12 oz bottle. Aroma: malty, boozy, and roasty, with hints of chocolate, toffee, and tobacco. Taste/Palate: sweet, creamy, and thick; finishes astringent and slightly bitter.
4.2 Poured from a 12. Aroma is boozy and fruity - raspberry and cherry. Flavor is biscuit with chocolate and caramel at first. The boozy, fruity flavor is at the end of the taste. Finishes somewhat sharp and astringent.
4.2 Great dark brown brew with beautiful frothy khaki colored cap. Lacing up and down the sides. Licorice, roast, char, tobacco, and minimal chocolate make up the aroma. Taste is of roasted malts, ash, slight coffee with some cocoa mixed about. Not super thick but medium bodied enough for me to enjoy. This was overall a fantastic imperial stout that more than surpassed my expectations. Enjoy!
3.8 12 oz bottle shared by Spencer. The pour is a light/medium black with a great darker khaki head and a couple spots of lace as it falls to a ring and thin film. The aroma is good. Lots of roasty malt and a great amount of chocolate. There is a light licorice grab, and it finishes a touch on the hot side. Really good. The flavor is really roasty. There's a great note of roast and a nice licorice. On the back end there is a good amount of licorice but it falls a bit thin. The mouth feel is thin. The soft carbonation helps it feel thicker, but it falls off the tongue pretty quick. The aftertaste is lightly bitter and roasty. Not bad, but it could be way better if it were thicker
4.1 12 oz bottle. Nice, sweet malt aroma. Nice head, with small bubbles. Big taste, licorice, malt, and a little but sweet. Full bodied. Very nice RIS.
4.0 This was a pretty solid imperial stout. Big flavors, nice color and head. A bit too much on the sweet side for my changing palate.
3.7 2014 dated bottle...pour is deep black...minimal lacing ..nose is huge chocolate and molasses with a slight smoke twist...berries are light....very smooth mouth..almost creamy...again i taste dark berries and light milky chocolate....actually a pretty solid beer...good show leinis...
3.8 Beer 9 of the 2014 beer exchange. Black pour. Little head. Coffee, roasted malts, complex and balanced. Very good.
4.4 From bottle. Pours black with a beige head. Big aroma of roasted malts. Taste is nicely sweet, not too much, with a good hoppiness in there for balance. Delicious and worth drinking again.
4.4 Bottle thanks to Goetz at our BOSS barrel emptying party. Pours dark brown with a thin creamy tan head. Aroma is chocolate and lots of coffee. Lots of dark fruits also. Really nice. Flavor follows with dark chocolate malt bs coffee. Rich creamy mouthfeel. Really nice beer.
3.7 12 oz bottle is marked 2012 vintage. Pours an oily black with light barely passing as a maroon hue. Aroma is dark fruit and wet tobacco leaves with the usual coffee and chocolate aspects. Flavor is rich and complex: baker’s chocolate, coffee and fudge with dark cherries and slight spice complexity. Full bodied, moderate carbonation and bittersweet finish.
3.3 Bottle (12 oz). 2012 vintage. Pitch black with a medium fully lasting brown head and some lacing. Aoma is of liquorice, raisins, figs, chocolate and roasted malt. Taste is also of liquorice (cloying), moderate sweetness, raisins, chocolate, roasted malt and light bitterness. Medium to full body. Moderate carbonation. Lingering liquorice finish. Lack of balance. Too much liquorice presence. Not easily drinkable, even for an RIS. I wasn’t able to get to half of the bottle.
4.2 Poured from bottle into snifter glass. This is an aged 2011 vintage drank late September 2014. Poured very dark, opaque with dark tan two-finger head. Nice lacing. With 11 malts, there is a lot of raisin, fig smell along with hints of chocolate and coffee. Taste brought out the sugars from the malts. Rather heavy; a nice example of an Imperial Stout. Although there are three different hops used, they just balance out the sugars that would have stayed. A long lasting taste that has the astringent tastes of alcohol. Keeps you warm. Not a bad tasting Imperial.
2.2 Julie says. It is not smokey and not bitter very alcohol tasty kind of sour. She gives a 3.3
3.8 Slightly thick oily pour tan head mild carbonation aromas rich chocolate roast coffee liquorice caramel dark fruits flavours coffee roasted dark chocolate resin pine grapefruit caramel liquorice rye spicy note good body involved crisp hops the finish best aftertastes grain hops sweet malt lasting bitter pine note very good imperial
3.8 Bottle. Pours near black with a dark yellowish brown head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has a combination of roasted malts, dark grains and a hint of chocolate as well as just a hint of coconut. Flavor has lots of dark grains and bitter roasted malts with a hint of chocolate and some dark fruits in the finish.
3.7 "another courtesy of pfoxyjohn. a big boozy vinous sweet ass stout. went great with dessert. not sticky, but very chocolatey and rum soaked raisin sweet. little hop presence, or roasted presence. tasty, but a bit too boozy and a one trick pony. still easily the best i’ve had from Leine."
3.7 I must have re-checked the label about 5 times because I couldn’t believe this was made by the shandy guys. But it’s a real, legit imperial stout. Big boozy flavor and mouthfeel that would undoubtedly improve with some aging. Hits you with tons of bitter chocolate up front, followed by alcohol burn in the finish. Probably a little too bitter for its own good. There is also some plum, but it is mostly overpowered. A very big stout with lots of character, and one that screams out for some bourbon barrel aging to smooth out the palate.
4.2 Poured from a 2012 bottle into a snifter dark brown with slight head. Aroma is dark fruit slight booze. Flavor is figs & raisins. Some booze. Definite cocoa. The bitter finish was surprising considering the age on the brew Balanced nicely. Smooth. Very good.
3.8 Bottle: 2011 release, so this is about 3 years old. Jet black pour; crazy large head, both for style & aged. Fine-bubbled, velvety, deep-tan in color, slow to recede, leaving generous amounts of lacing all over. Robust aroma of baker’s chocolate, black licorice, figs, sweet plums, burnt brown sugar, light roast, mallow foam, & perhaps just a slight hint of coffee bean. Smells very nice. Big flavors of caramelized brown sugar, tempered caramel, bittersweet chocolate, light ash, touches of anise, deep plums & dates, with a very slight, milky & creamy aspect wafting in & out throughout. Little bit of back-end bitterness; slightly roasted with a dried dark fruit finish. Relatively smooth, creamy mouth feel. Hard to believe this comes from the same guys who make Summer Shandy & Berry Weiss. This is really good.
4.4 Can you say malty, yum. Hops definetly present on the back end but the malts are what hit you right away. I have a weird way of rating hoppy beers and it’s by the number of sneezes which for me range from 1 to 4. This Russian imperial stout was a 2 sneezer for me. I loved it and will be on the lookout for more.
4.1 2012 bottle to oversized snifter. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a review of an aged bottle of this beer. I really enjoy this fresh. Aged it has the same gorgeous black pour with a chocolatey brown head. Head fades to a tapioca ring around most of the glass. Delightful aroma of balers chocolate and coffee liqueur. Taste is dark cocoa, charred maple, and smoke. Aged this loses a little steam mid taste. The roastiness becomes lighter and some vanilla flavor presents itself. Body is viscous and the finish is quite bitter from the roasted malts. Still quite good but better fresh.
3.5 Bottle poured into a pint glass. A - Pours black as night with a big two finger tall tan head leaving spotty lacing down the glass. S - Smells of dark chocolate, coffee, molasses, and some dark berries. It smells very sweet with a bit of a berry twang toward the end. T - Starts off with a good bit of dark roasted malt quickly giving way to a mix of dark chocolate, molasses, black licorice, coffee, and some black berries. Even with all the sweet dark flavors going on the fruitiness is still quite prominent. The finish has quite a bit of dark roast, lingering for a short period of time. M - Heavy body and flavor with moderate carbonation. Thick, syrupy, feel lingering through the finish. O - While I didn’t "love" this beer I did enjoy it. It had a nice berry component you don’t get very much with bigger stouts. Good but far from great.
3.9 Bottle. Black with a 1 finger mocha head. Aroma is dark fruit, fudge and char. Taste follows pretty closely. Extremely rich mouthfeel and almost no carb. Moderate booziness. Very nice effort from a brewery I wouldn't expect.
