Lervig / Hoppin' Frog Bourbon Barrel Aged Sippin' Into Darkness

Lervig / Hoppin' Frog Bourbon Barrel Aged Sippin' Into Darkness

A sweet imperial stout straight from the creative minds of 2 of the world’s best head brewers right now. They’ve taken a rich malty imperial stout and added in Candi syrup, Lactose, Cocoa nibs and vanilla to give this quite dry stout a fresh lick of paint in a sweet facelift. The cocoa added to the roasted dark chocolate flavours and comes out on the body whilst the candi sugar and vanilla dominate the finish of this excellent beer.

3.9 Keg @ MBCC 2017 IIRC. Black pour with a small tan head. Balanced roast, milk chocolate, bourbon and vanilla. Fairly viscous oily mouthfeel. Good stuff but the barley wine is still where Lervig shines the most.
4.3 33cl Bottle @ Boxbeers.com, Copenhagen, Denmark. Black colour with a thin tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, cocoa, sweet, vanilla. Taste is roasted malt, chocolate, molasses, vanilla, toffee, oak, bourbon. Full body, soft carbonation.
4.3 0.33 l bottle from 'Beyond Beer', bottled in January 2018, cellared for almost a year. Pitch black with a very thin, beige layer on top. Sweetish, gently roasty aroma of praline, nougat, mocca, vanilla and a touch of bourbon. Heavily sweet, malty, gently roasty taste of praline, mocca, vanilla, nougat, some bourbon and a touch of licorice, followed by a long, gently roasty-bitter, slightly earthy finish with very pleasant bourbon notes. Medium to full body, smooth and oily mouthfeel, very soft carbonation. Really tasty stuff, even better because more complex than the base beer, but also even sweeter. The bourbon matches perfectly and the barrel-aging is close to perfection.

4.4 Pours black as tar with no head. Nose is thick and heavy milk chocolate. Just chocolate and more chocolate. Vanilla kicks in after. Molasses and port. Palate is moderate to thick with a slight wateriness. Not much carbonation. Taste is sweet chocolate, oak, light bourbon hiding away to give subtle notes, along with a sort of vodka flavour making up the martini part. Lactose creeps up to give a creaminess along with biscuity malt and caramel.
4.7 330ml bottle consumed fresh. Pours jet black with zero carbonation. Rich, fruity nose of fresh dates, treacle and vanilla notes from the bourbon. Robust palate supports a sweet and savoury flavour largely carrying the nose across. Superb with a large potential for ageing.

Ahogyan kezdetben illatában sem játszik domináns szerepet, eleinte ízében is inkább csak jelzés értékkel bír a bourbon visszafogottan elegáns, idővel azonban egyre inkább teret nyerő hangulata, melynek fahordós, újabb rétegekkel felvértezett vaníliás karaktere jótékony lepelként simul a szerkezetre. Nyilvánvalóan a sörkészítés magasfoka az ital, úgy emlékszem azonban, hogy az alap verzió még ettől is mélyebb benyomásokat tett rám.
4.3 Bottle at home. Poured dark black with no head. Can taste the alcohol content which means this is very boozy. Lots of chocolate flavours
