3.0 Bottle. Pours reddish brown with a thin lacy head. Earthy aromas of caramel malt, dark chocolate and earthy hops. Earthy flavors too--coffee, cola, hay, roasty malt, and subtle dark fruits. Finishes with earthy hops. Watery, thin, slightly fizzy mouthfeel. Just okay.
4.2 Aroma: maple, bread, caramel, Appearance: clear amber with a beige head Taste: light sweetness, lightly bitter, Palate: medium body, sticky, average carbonation, bitter finish, Tasty
3.3 Bottle from Beer and Wine. Dark amber body with medium head. Nose is malty, toasty, spicy of brown sugar. Taste is malty and toasty of caramel, malts with lemon. Nice smoky finish.
3.1 12 oz bottle from Giant Eagle in Pittsburgh. This was just OK, not great but a valiant effort on the part of Long Trail. Worth a purchase and a taste.
3.7 Pours true to name: brown with an off white head that leaves lacing. Nose is roasted malt. Body is medium. Taste is roasted malt with light bitterness in the aftertaste. 12 oz bottle in a 121 pack at a great price
(Rating #6507)
2.8 Pour from a 12oz bottle. Clear cola colored ale with small tan head. Aroma of light caramel, toast, metal and hints of nuts. Taste is weakly sweet up front transitioning to a toasted / nutty finish, ends with a wet burnt toast taste. Thin palate.
3.6 From 12 oz bottle. About $1.07 for single bottle at Trader Joes, poured into pilsner glass Aroma: That brown ale smell, caramel, bread Appearance: brown, clear, minimal head, white foam, Taste: heavy cloying sweetness, lightly bitter, Palate: medium body, creamy, soft carbonation, long finish, Overall: Not a bad brown ale. Tastes exactly what I’d consider a standard brown ale and matches what a brown ale should taste like. Good body and "brown ale" aroma and taste. Nothing remarkable - it’s a brown ale - but it’s a very solid brown ale, if that’s your thing.
2.7 Ehh....not what I would expect from Long Trail. I'm basing this on the fact that it's supposed to be an ale but it's a brown ale for sure. As a brown ale....it's ok, but as an ale, not so much. If in a weak brown ale mood, this will cut the mustard, otherwise...not so much.
3.8 12oz bottle, from my local Kroger. Was curious what a "barn ale" was going to be when I picked this up, I had no idea. Figured maybe it was similar to a farmhouse ale. Turns out it’s just a mispelling of "brown ale". Nice chocolate, toasty flavors up front. Mild spiciness. Good earthy hop. Pretty damn tasty and flavorful for the low ABV, actually. Clear red / brown color. Thin off-white / khaki head, leaving good reaches of lace. Lighter to medium body. Smooth, kind of crisp, lighter to moderate carbonation, with a mild chewiness. Very mild slick, but more dry finish. Bright and refreshing. Moderate to bigger bitter taste, light sweet. This is a great, balanced, sessionable brown ale (excuse me, barn ale). Great to enjoy with my sandwich.
3.0 Draft at Il Forno in Frederick, MD served in a pint glass. Clear ambery, dark brown color with tan head. Aroma notes of roasted malt, caramel, nuttiness, some maple and tad spices. Taste adds some faint coffee, more roast and tad more maple. Light body, low-moderate carbonation, creamy, sticky with sweet roast finish. Nice enough lighter brown ale with some maple influence.
3.0 bottle @ Party Town / Florence KY --- Clear dark amber brown color, good one finger tan head, lots of lace strips. Aroma of malt, hay, and wood, much like a good smelling barn. Taste is malt that turns heavier as it moves through a medium carbonated swallow, adding wood, nut, and maybe a little maple syrup. The finish is notably short of hops, as one might expect from this type of brew, and the finish is short. I’ve had better Long Trail examples.
3.3 Bottled. A brown beer with a lazing yellowish head. The aroma has notes of nuts, caramel, spices, maple sirup, and malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel , maple sirup, and fruit, leading to a dry finish.
2.8 Too thin & watery to carry any flavor! Pours a decent brown w/ a thin tan head & spotty lacing. The aroma has some nice dark malts. The taste has some ok malty notes but they are drowned out by the thinness of this beer. It’s pretty light but evaporating taste makes this a below average beer!
2.3 Bottle from Philly craft. EHH, it was just okay for me. Notes of roasted malts, toffee and some roast. Body was a bit too thin for me, slightly watery.
3.2 New batch, new label as well. 12oz bottle. paid $1.95 for it enjoyed fridge temp in stemware. Murky plum color and brown. 1 finger creamy head. Nose is nice. Wood. maple. brown sugar and pecans. Taste is nice. creamy finish, sweet finish, up front I get a nutty roasted peanut, some wood, caramel and some other sugars. not terrible. I quite like it.
3.2 12 Fl. Oz. Bottle. Poured clear, dark brown with a small tan head and no real lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, some nuts and hints of coffee. Taste is sweet, malty, some yeast, a bit nutty and a bit bitter towards the end. Overall a nice beer, enjoyable and drinkable.
3.3 12oz bottle thanks to Ed5388, thanks bro. Poured a flater body of deep dark brown under a smaller foamy light beige head. Aroma/flavor of chocolate, muffin, medium toast, light hint of coffee, milk, slight syrupyness. Body is super soft to almost flat bodied, medium mouthfeel, milky full finish. Improve the body on this and this one jumps up tremendously.
3.6 12oz bottle from Lacey Spirits. Poured a light brown color with a small foamy tan head. Aroma of light coffee, nuts, toasted malts, and hints of sweet pancake syrup. Taste mimics the nose with a little more roastiness, and more maple in the finish. Really liked this one.
2.6 Drank from the bottle. Aroma is composed of nuts, hay, grass, and corn. Taste is yeast and nuts with a little bit of caramel thrown into the mix. Medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation and a sticky mouth feel. Okay beer, nothing special.
3.6 Bottle. Pours a cola brown with a fizzy head that dies down quickly and ruby highlights. Aromas are autumn leaves with a bit of nut and an edge of cola. Flavor is very nice for a light beer... lots of autumn leaves and nuts with a bit of toffee and a hint of watery spiciness. This is a very nice beer for the style and ABV combination.
2.8 Kinda bland brown. No disernable flavors.
2.9 Bottle to shaker glass. Pours reddish brown, one finger khaki head, some lacing. Aroma of toasted malt and herbs. Taste is sweet malty with very little bitterness. Light bodied, light carbonation and thin mouth feel. Finishes malty sweet with notes of biscuit, burnt caramel, slight smoke and wood. Middle of the road brown ale.
3.2 From tap. Pours clear and golden deep amber to hazzlenut brown with a small tan head. Aroma is toasted malty and caramelish. Toasted malty and breadish. Light caramelish. Bitter and toasted medium dry into the finish.
3.4 A solid brown ale, not like Belle's Best, but actually pretty comparable. A solid brew on a cold fall day
3.3 Caramel and fruity tones. Nice brown color with no bitter aftertaste. Not too heavy.
2.8 roasty aroma, dark red in color with a fading head. malty, slight roasty flavor
3.6 DATE TASTED: September 2, 2014... GLASSWARE: Brew at the Zoo pint...OCCASION: O’s bust open a 10-3 lead in Game One of the ALDS... APPEARANCE: intimidatingly dark mahogany body; swiftly descending off-white head; flat, inconsistent up top... AROMA: thick, intense, sweet syrupy punch that encompasses a beautifully smoky embrace; hickory also mates with flattened hops to approximate a brown ale/porter mash-up ... PALATE: weighty, rather flat cola mouthfeel; teeth must withstand some energy, but the warmth sits idly on the tongue--heavy.....TASTE: sweet and malty with the syrup and smoke mitigating a rather uneventful flavor; a bit of biscuit late, but not what the aroma promises... OVERALL: Autumnal, yes--but the allure of its scent doesn’t measure up when sipped; lo alcohol content makes it sessionable....
3.3 Bottle. Pours clear brown with fizzy beige head. Aroma is toasted and light caramel malts, light mixed nuts, faint chocolate, and faint earthy notes. Flavor matches the nose with a toasted malt profile and light earthy hop bitterness; dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.
3.2 Bottle from Wegmans Collegeville. Pours typical brown with a medium sized tan head that has average retention. The aroma has roasted malt, a slight bit of cocoa, and a tiny bit of coffee bean in the distance. The taste has a milk chocolate / roasted malt character. This is not complex but it is easy to drink and decent.
