Late in November of 2011, Mike Rodriguez our head brewer asked about creating a Coffee and Cacoa Nib version of Serpent’s Stout for the San Diego Strong Ale Festival. The beer was a hit with our fans. When we wrote up the syllabus for the Ultimate Box Set, we knew a version of this beer would be included. We waited until the very end of the release schedule to put this beer in a bottle so that the coffee and cacoa nibs really come through. Four Bourbon barrels were selected for their rich and dense chocolate flavors. One week before packaging, we added 17 lbs of Ryan Brothers Coffee and 4 lbs of TCHO Cacao Nibs were added to the coffee and cacao to steep before packaging.

4.10,375l bottle at home courtesy of Saeglopur, big thanks. No obvious BB date. black color, no head. smells coffee, bourbon, nutty, vanilla, nutty. very nice smell. full body, light carbonation, slick mouthfeel. tastes of bourbon, coffee, vanilla, bit nutty, cocoa, light coconut, bitter chocolate. finishes lightly sweet with notes of coffee, nutty and bitter chocolate notes. very very nice, very smooth.
4.7Cork top bottle, 0.375l, shared with Patrick & Ema. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, oak and vanilla. Pours dark brown color without any head. Taste starts with sweet and rich roasted malt and coffee, follows by chocolate, dark fruit and licorice with barrel notes, mouthfeel is warm alcoholic and mild spicy, while finish is very mild bitter. Full body, thick creamy texture and average carbonation in palate. Almost perfect...
4.2Barwa czarna, piana beżowa skromna.
Aromat średnio-intensywny, dużo gorzkiej czekolady, kakao, kawa słodzona w tle. Wanilia i migdały.
W smaku pełne, słodkie. Czekolada, kakao, kawa, duzo bourbonu z posmakiem wanilii i migdałów. Alkohol lekko rozgrzewający.
4.3Zupełnie czarna barwa, piana pomijalna. Pachnie pięknie. Pięknie. Beczka, burbon, czekolada, kawa, mokre drewno, jeszcze trochę czekolady. Smak jak na Lost Abbey wytrawny, głównie przez nuty kakao i kawy. Piwo pozostaje przy tym gładziutkie a ponad 13% alkoholu jest zakamuflowane fenomenalnie. Mistrzostwo.
4.3From backlog. Bottle at Bergstadens House. Black with beige head. Roasted malts, cocoa, Chocolate, vanilla, coffee and bourbon. Nice!
4.6Appearance: pitch black, viscous, with beige head, which quickly reduces to a narrow ring. Aroma: tons of bourbon vanilla, delightful cocoa and chocolate pralines aroma, some dried fruits as well, not much coffee however. Taste: vanilla, chocolate pralines, coffee, delicately sweet, but sweetness is counterbalanced by high roasty bitterness. Slightly alcoholic finish. Low, almost flat carbonation. Beer is dense and viscous. Great imperial stout!
4.5Piwo czarne jak smoła, pianka w postaci beżowej obrączki przylegającej do ścianek szkła. W aromacie bucha bourbonem tuż po otwarciu. Na stępnie wchodzi intensywna kawa, kakao, likier czekoladowy, ciemne owoce, nuty mokrego drewna, kokos, odrobina karmelu. W smaku bardzo wytrawne i palone, wyraźnie kawowe, wysoka goryczka, alkohol rozgrzewa przełyk. Poza tym jest też mleczna czekolada, kakao, mokre drewno, bourbon, delikatny orzech włoski, ciemne owoce. OGIEŃ. Sporo ciała, gładka i oleista faktura, niskie wysycenie. Ogólnie bomba doznań, jak to u lost abbey. Nic dodać, nic ująć. Kozak.
4.9Pitch black pour with a very thin espresso head. Aroma full of bourbon, faint coffee, cocoa beans.Taste of bourbon, dark bitter chocolate, cocoa beans, molasses, vanilla and caramel. Full and smooth bodied, medium carbonation,complex,perfect..
4.1Bottle from CBB, shared. Pours a gorgeous black, next to no head. Great aroma with dark chocolate, coffee, dark malts, sweet bourbon. Flavor adds layers, barrel character, cacao and light coconut, very tasty. Smooth full feel, velvety and warming. Great.

4.4Bottle, 375 ml, courtesy of Miro. Shared with him, Max and Kova. Black with medium brownish head. Coffee, chocolate, bourbon, some vanilla, some fruity notes, sweet, bitter finish. Low carbonation. Full bodied.
3.42018 bottle.
It pours pitch black, near zero head of foam, zero lacing.
Smells of coffee, cocoa nibs, roasted malt, oodles of Bourbon and hence, a huge boozy smell.
The taste starts with cocoa nibs, coffee, light figs, roasted malt. Bourbon is big but not as big as in the smell. Lots of sweetness and booze, low carbonation,
fairly thick syrupy mouthfeel.
Good.
3.8Oily, black colour with a small and creamy tan head. Strong barrel aroma, mostly bourbon, some dark malts and coffee. Chocolatey flavour, dark malts, boozy finish. Low medium body and carbonation, soft mouthfeel.
4.0Aromat: cudo, wspaniały i bogaty, intensywny, dużo czekolady, kakao i pralin, kawa subtelnie wpasowana, nie zagłusza wszystkiego, słodkawy zapach wanilii i szlachetnego bourbona od beczki, trochę owoców kandyzowanych, cukru trzcinowego. Słodko i cudownie przyjemnie.
Wygląd: czarne i smoliste, praktycznie bez piany, minimalna, brunatna pojawia się zaraz po nalaniu.
Smak: pralinki, czekolada i kakao uderzają słodyczą w pierwszej chwili.
3.6Corked 37.5 cl bottle @ home. Pours black with a tiny tan head. Aroma and flavour are roasted malt, liquorice, coffee, and booze - with a roasted finish.
4.3The aroma is some licorice, vanilla, chocolate and coffee. Pours almost black with tan head, mostly diminishing and very good lacing. The taste is a medium bitter/sweet. The body is full, the texture creamy, the carbonation lively and the finish long. VERY VERY GOOD!!!
4.1Poured from a bottle into a snifter. Close to black with no head at all, just a thin brown ring around the edge of the glass. Aroma is layered with roasted malts, coffee and chocolate. First there's a light sweetness, followed by dark chocolate, then the coffee rises ... finally giving way to a long bitter and warm bourbon finish. Full body and viscous on the palate. Nicely done!
4.2Bottle. Pours black with a medium tan head. Aroma of malt, dark fruit, molasses, chocolate, oak, coffee and bourbon. Malt and dark fruit flavor giving way to chocolate and coffee before a brandy and bourbon finish.
4.3Chocolate, pralines, bourbon, coffee, roasted malts, vanilla and caramel in nose. Pours pitch black with tan head. Taste is sweet to medium sweet with dark chocolate, pralines, vanilla, coconut, coffee, caramel and bourbon. Medium bitter finish, soft carbonation and full body. Overall excellent, beautiful beer.
4.7Bottle from Lost Abbey. Dark bkack. Cacao and coffee for sure, maple syrup aroma. Big tgick chocolate flavor with some nice coffee bitterness. Delicious, decadent, bomb.
4.60.375l bottle thanks to Cristobal37. Pitch black body with a thin brown head. Aroma of cocoa, caramel, chocolate, raisins, coffee, pecans and floral hops. Taste of chocolate, pecans, cognac, coffee, caramel and floral hops. Masterpiece.
4.1Bottle: Black color with no head. The aroma is my pleasure! Full of plums, almonds, chocolate and some light coconut. The aroma is better than the taste and the taste is wonderful! Yummy!
4.3Aw man, this is a fantastic stout. Black pour, really dark brown head. Amazing aroma of chocolate oak, raisin and vanilla. Taste follows, really magnificent, sweet and creamy, lots of chocolate, vanilla and caramel. Full chewy mouthfeel.
4.0Słodkie, czekoladowe, bardzo gładkie. Beczka dodaje wanilii i kokosu. Bardzo dobre, degustacyjne, choć nie wyrwało mnie z butów jak inne ich piwa.
4.1Piana drobna, niewysoka i znika szybko. Kolor czarny. Aromat kawa, czekolada, kakao, beczka z wanilią, kokosem, przyjemny. Smak ponownie gorzka czekolada, kawa, kakao, karmel, wanilia, lekko szlachetnie alkohol, wyraźna goryczka. Bardzo Dobre
4.1375ml bottle from Capones. Midnight brown with no head. Dark chocolate and fresh bourbon that mixes well with a dark roasted malt, some vanilla, molasses, freshly roasted coffee beans with some wet espresso grinds, full body and mild carbonation, boozy and semi sweet, solid brew.
4.3375 ml bottle into snifter, 2018 vintage bottling. Pours dense pitch black color with a 1 finger dense and rocky tan head with great retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big nutty dark roast coffee, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, molasses, toffee, marshmallow, fudge, brownie batter, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, and dark bread; with light notes of coconut, licorice, smoke, leather, tobacco, dark fruit, and roast/toast/oak earthiness. Touch of booze in the aroma as it warmed, but not overwhelming. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, cocoa, and bourbon barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of huge nutty dark roast coffee, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, molasses, toffee, marshmallow, fudge, brownie batter, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, and dark bread; with light notes of coconut, licorice, smoke, leather, tobacco, dark fruit, and roast/toast/oak earthiness. Very mild roast bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of nutty coffee, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, molasses, toffee, marshmallow, fudge, brownie batter, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, dark bread, light dark fruit/smoke, and roast/toast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Amazing complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, cocoa, and bourbon barrel flavors; with a solid roasted bitter/sweet and bourbon/oak spiciness balance; with zero cloying/acrid flavors after the finish. Mild carbonation and very full body; with and extremely rich, creamy, silky, velvety mouthfeel that is amazing. Minimal chalky roast, oak tannins, or dryness. Mildly increasing warmth of 13.5%, with zero barrel booziness lingering after the finish. Overall this is an amazing barrel aged coffee stout! All around incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, cocoa, and bourbon barrel flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the huge ABV; with the minimally bitter finish. Mind blowingly rich and complex flavors. Amazing balance of fruity/nutty coffee, cocoa, and malts; with perfect barrel integration. Not overly roasty on malts, nor tannic on the barrels. A highly enjoyable offering, and pristine style example. One of the smoothest stouts I've ever had at this ABV, which is even more impressive considering this is a fresh batch.
4.1Bottle from Belmont Station. Very excited to see these track beers hit the city.
A: Opens softly but there is a bit of a mocha head after an aggressive pour. Legs.
N: Intensely deep cocoa, roast, ash, malted milkballs, lactose, vanilla, oak, caramel, and whiskey. Just goes on forever. A fair amount of soy sauce, earth, smoke, and smoldering campfire embers. Generous portions of espresso and wood. Fig, date, and a touch of raisins.
T: Intensely rich and decadent, like an espresso chocolate cake with a shot of bourbon inside. Not at all cloying; cleverly balanced with the bitterness of the roast and some of the hopping. Lots of vanilla and caramel candies.
M: Slick, heavy, oily body, light carbonation, a touch of alcohol presence, but only if you really know where to look. This could definitely come at you from the underworld and you wouldn’t know it until it’s too late.
O: A beautiful dessert beer. Truffles and coffee; I love the mixture and I have to say it surprises me that more brewers haven’t put this miraculous combination together as well. I’d probably even put it above Super Nebula if I had to choose – but it’d be a tough fight with Breakfast with the Buffalo
4.0Dark black with a thin tan head, malty, sweet and boozy aroma, taste is boozy, astringent, dark chocolate with a warming full bodied finish
