Lost Abbey Devotion

Lost Abbey Devotion

It’s an unassuming road leading to the priory. Here, off the corner of two intersecting roads, dedicated monks have been making beer for over 150 years. It’s always been a simple life – the kind that requires they brew only enough to sustain the activities of their monastery In the silence of passing seasons, they pray, they brew and retire in a solitary existence behind the sheltering walls. They live a most interesting life. Most likely one we wouldn’t sustain.

Nearby, each summer, the trellised fields spring to life as rows of resinous green cones are trained toward the heavens. Rumor is some monks love these hops and being surrounded by budding yellow aromas and the leafy pungent fields inspires them. Since we weren’t sensible enough to locate our brewery near hop fields, we can only offer this blond ale in celebration of our Abbey brethren and their steadfast Devotion.

3.4 Rami Rami is drinking a Devotion by The Lost Abbey at Powiśle Lekkie przyprawy, niemalo goryczki, ciut owocow... slodkawe, milo pijalne, moze ciut przyciezkie jak na styl, niemniej dobre, 3.4 na luzaku
3.4 355ml bottle. HAzed golden pour, a refreshing brew that I avoided for a long time because if its stupid packaging format. This one is sweetish but hoppy for the style, clean and refreshing.
3.4 Light amber clear with almost no head. Slight hops and yeast aroma. Medium strong hoppy bitterness with some dry sourness and yeasty notes. Bit watery.
3.6 Aroma: From bottle: Aroma is initially hay with grassy hops followed by a light sweetness from the malts. The malts aside from the slight sweetness has a light cracker aroma. Esters are crisp but not distinguishing the fruit, almost lemon rind. There is also a little alcohol on the nose as well. Appearance: Crystal clear body, light copper in color. An off white head with mostly tiny bubble a few medium ones throughout. The head is retained, but things to a medium level. Flavor: Crisp clean first impression, with lightly toasted malt character, but really balanced towards the hop profile. The hops provide a crisp flavor with a tart fruit character and a pleasant bittering. The finish is clean, bitterness lingers for a little bit but is not overpowering nor unpleasant. Mouthfeel: medium carbonation, mostly affecting the front of the tongue. A very smooth/ creamy texture to the body of the beer. The mouthfeel is medium. There is a hop astringent present, is mild but contributes to a pleasant overall drinking impression. Medium alcohol warmth noted Overall: A very good ale, pleasant to drink, aromas are hard to distinguish but happily tastes better than aromatic impression.
3.2 Piana sycząca, szybko opada do firanki. Barwa złota, klarowna. W aromacie nuty słodowo estrowe - zboże, brzoskwinia, melon... Smak wytrawny, lekko kwaskowy, ciasteczkowy, morelowy, z fajną, ziołowa goryczką w punkt. Średnie wysycenie, wodniste w odbiorze. Ogólnie zaledwie poprawny blond...
3.5 Bottle, deep golden with a faint haze, lightly spicy orange and hop nose, leading to bitter caramel with again a touch of sweet orange.

4.1 Bottle. Golden blonde, good carbonation, white head. Surprisingly strong floral hop aroma, doughy spicy yeast. Nice malty corn flakes taste and a strong noble hop taste. Doughy yeast, even malt n hop Belgian blonde. Like a golden ale with Czech pils bitter hop finish. Really nice.
3.7 Bottle in Seattle. Thick lingering foam, mostly clear heavy gold color. Moderate sweetness, moderate ester on nose, with some lovely Belgian yeast. Balanced body, great Belgian character with a nice dryness, clean smooth bitterness. Soft fruit. Very nice.
3.3 Lumnious orange body with slowly rising streams of bubbles barely feeding a thin froth. Vibrant minerally nose with light, dancing fruit and a restrained swirl of Belgian yeast, esters, sour tartness, and breadiness. Prickly sensation on the tongue upon the first sip. Effervescent, sparkling on the palate, with clovey mineralness and a bit of a chalky texture. Light breadiness and tart sour notes. Nice overall, though the chalky character detracts a bit.
3.9 Slight citrus, wheat, and sprite aroma. Tastes of oranges, lemon, hops, wheatgrass, jasmine tea, and wheat. Very light bitterness, but big flavors. This was quite a surprise. Very special.
3.2 @ the brewpub, San Marcos 18-2-22: Enkel belgare utan större konstigheter. Tydlig jäst och krydda
3.0 On tap at the brewery. Golden with a small white head. Sweetish with yeast, fruit and some spices. An ok one.

3.1 Bottle - Soft grains with a touch of skunk esters. Clear gold with a rich white head. Soft grains and banana esters with a light spice in the finish.
3.4 Tap at Mohawk Bend. Pale malt nose, with slightly spritzy hops, and quite a bit of yeast. Lightly hazy deep gold color. Very smooth, mildly sweet stone fruit, yeast residue, slight metallic note, and a bit buttery. Medium body, with tingling carbonation. Okay. A bit of yeast bite.
3.6 Bottle. Pours gold with a white head. A bit of a spicy yeasty base, lighter flowery and herbal notes, mild bitterness, and a balanced finish. Pretty good.
3.6 Slightly hazy golden color. Aroma has belgian yeast esters with grassy and floral notes. Taste is yeasty with slightly sweet grains, more grassy and hoppy on the finish. Medium body and carbonation. Balanced and easy drinking.

3.1 Light malt aroma. Gold and clear in color with nice long lasting head. Taste is light but balanced
3.5 750 mL bottle shared by ebone1988. The pour is a darker golden orange with a thicker white head and a pretty good bit of lace as it falls down. The aroma is full of a little spicy yeast. The lemongrass zones through real strong and there is a light malt underneath it. An earthy hop opens up and finishes a little sweeter. The flavor is sweet lemongrass and a lighter spicy malt and kiss of yeast. The light bitterness grows from a lighter hop, but this is not bad. The mouth feel is medium to light bodied with a sharper carbonation and a lingeringly sweet lemongrass and spicy yeast. This isn’t too bad. 7 4 6 4 15
3.8 Bottle from Merchants. Bottle shared with koleminer20. Aroma is dry, pine hoppy, dusty, funk, yeast, mild clove, ok. Appearance is amber golden, light tan head, unclear. Taste is dusty, pine, citrus, barnyard, lemongrass, somewhat bitter, yeast, funk, good. Mouthfeel is medium body, light carbonation, pine citrus hoppy yeast wheat dry aftertaste. Overall, this one is quite solid.
3.7 Hazy yellow pour with aroma of fruit, yeast, and spice. Fruit sweetness with spice, yeast, and a hint of funk. Dry finish. Very good beer!
3.5 Draft at Barleymash in San Diego. Cloudy amber with a lightly lacing head. Belgian yeast and spice aroma with a wheaty character and a slightly Brett finish.
3.5 Bottle at Rickfifty's. Pours amber. Foamy, white head. Hop, resin, pine, apple. Light bitterness. Some sweetness. Tart. Medium body and carbonation.
4.1 From Nov 2007 his beer pours from 750ml caged and corked bottle a hazy light gold with another 2 finger head of foam(typical for Lost Abbey brews?) and lots of nice lacing. It looks so nice in my New Belgium chalice. The smell is fruity and yeasty and there's some funk there as well. The taste is complex. Lots of funk with peppery notes, a very pronounced hop bitterness, some malt sweetness in the background, and a tiny bit of sourness. It has a medium body and the carbonation is also medium. It finishes bitter and that dominates the aftertaste. This son of a gun, overall, is very bitter. Bitter in a way that say, La Folie is sour. It just dominates my taste buds and almost becomes one dimensional but I just can't help taking further sips. Good drinkability here? More than good.It kind of reminds me of De Ranke XXX only with more bitterness. It's like I'm drinking hop juice. I kid you not. Some may think this goes over the top and I *could* understand where they are coming from. For me, it's a hoppy delight though it should be consumed in moderation lest your taste buds be overwhelmed for a longer period of time than you wished. I favour it and recommend it. Only those adventurous need apply...
3.7 Pours hazy golden with lasting foamy whitw head. Aroma: pale malt, mild grain, yeasts, fruity esters, spicy, citrusy hop profile. Flavor follows aroma. Very dry finish, slight bitter, smooth texture, medium carbonation, medium bodied
3.8 On tap at the brewery. Clear golden. Nose is sweet yeast, orange peel, light spicy. Tastes bitter dry malty, fruits, yeast, zest.
4.0 750 ml bottle into tulip glass; no bottle dating, but was just released locally. Pours fairly hazy/cloudy deep golden amber color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big peach, pear, apricot, pineapple, lemon, orange, grapefruit, melon, red apple, white grape, citrus peel, peppercorn, clove, light banana/bubblegum, wheat, cracker, biscuit, white bread dough, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, bready malt, and earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big peach, pear, apricot, pineapple, lemon, orange, grapefruit, melon, red apple, white grape, citrus peel, peppercorn, clove, light banana/bubblegum, wheat, cracker, biscuit, white bread dough, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Moderately peppery yeast spiciness and light-moderate herbal/grassy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of peach, pear, apricot, pineapple, lemon, orange, grapefruit, melon, red apple, white grape, citrus peel/rind, peppercorn, clove, light banana/bubblegum, wheat, cracker, biscuit, white bread dough, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, bready malt, and earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and no astringent hop/yeast flavors after the finish. Moderate increasing dryness from bitter/spiciness and carbonation. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/grainy/sticky, fairly crisp, and slightly resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 6.3%. Overall this is an excellent Belgian pale ale! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, bready malt, and earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, and refreshing to drink; with the modestly bitter/spicy/drying finish. Really great mix of Belgian yeast complexity; with balanced bready malt and noble hops. A little too much on the bitter side for a true BPA, but it's not overdone. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on style example otherwise.
3.9 Tap. Golden yellow with small head. Herbal, grassy, spicy and yeasty. Relatively light body. Citrus hops in the finish. I'm not always a fan of strong herbal stuff, but this is great. I could drink this all day.
