Lost Abbey Duck Duck Gooze

Lost Abbey Duck Duck Gooze

In Belgian brewing there are fantastic wild ales brewed with naturally occurring yeast. These beers develop over time and are ready on their own terms. Duck Duck Gooze is our homage to these effervescent and wonderfully complex sparkling beers. A blend of young and old barrel aged beers we expect this to be one of our most sought after beers year after year as it will be released in very small quantities. Available in 375 and 750ml bottles.

Batch 3 available on tap January 2016.

4.1 Backlog from BUMBa, both the 2013 & 2016 vintage. Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow with a white head. Clean and crisp funk, very nuanced, hay, white grapes, grapeskins, zesty lemon. Both vintages held up nicely, prefer the 2013 where everything is integrated even better.

4.1 750ml bottle @ Epic Lost Abbey tasting. Thanks Tide and Otso! Pours yellowish orange with a small head. Aroma of tartish and funky yeast, farmyard, oak, earthiness and sourness. Taste is funky, sourish and vinous tart with some bretta, oak, wood, earthiness and farmyard. Finish is balanced, funky and tart with some sourness, earthy notes, bretta, farmyard and vinous notes. 4.6 09-09-17 // taster, draft. At Beavertown Extravaganza 2017, London. Finally a Long time want done. The Hype was great but I think this beer can stand it. A wordclass sour ale. Well balanced. Some lambic character but with ist own uniqueness. Hay, grainy Body with slight salty Aromas and a medium sour, tart Feeling. Excellent.
3.3 Batch 2. Golden pour, smaller head, dissipates fast. Sour aroma, apricot, tart fruit, peach, white wine, green apple, green grape. Actually somewhat harsh on the palate, massive amount of green apple, overripe fruit, acidic, phenolic. Medium body, finish is a bit harsh. Better fresh? bad bottle? either way something of a disappointment.

4.0 Very old rating found on a loose page while cleaning, possibly from 2010. Notes are from a tasting, possibly RB gathering in Grand Rapids- Hazy straw color, tart, fruity aroma. The flavor is also tart and fruity with a good balance of malty sweetness. It's funky, though maybe not as funky as some, and extremely good.

4.3 Bottle sample shared by Drake during the 2010 RBSG from notes (also a more recent sample as well). Pours a hazy golden color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have big funk, citrus, acidity, yogurt, wood, vanilla, a honey like sweetness in the background, white grapes, some acetic character, first class sour.

4.0 Draught at EBF Pre-Fest party at Eataly, 2/2/17. Lightly to minimally hazy, bright goldenrod-brass body is topped by a good-sized white head that slowly fades to cover. Brett adds plentiful lime, light band aid and lots of sweat in the nose, as the funk slowly deepens as it breathes. Lactic and very light acetic acids provide a "lambic-y" character, though it still smells a bit more like an American Wild ale than true lambic. Lots of oak, though it’s not overdone, with vanilla, light wood and plentiful malt behind it. No alcohol or flaw. In the mouth, I’m immediately surprised at how malty it is. Not too sweet, but definitely one of the sweeter wild ales I’ve had in a while. Tons of rich honey mixes with moderate oak, Brett-derived citrus and tropical fruits and a bit stronger lactic-acetic acidity on the finish. Soft, malty texture with tight carbonation and no alcohol or flaw. Rating is against a "American Sour/Wild" not a Belgian Lambic.
