And so the Three Wise Men set out from the East bearing gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. Along the Way, they followed a bright light. The Bible neglects to mention if they brought beer or not. Who goes crossing the desert without beer? How smart are we to believe these wise men were?
Since Christmas is the season of gift giving more than receiving, please be a giver and share the Wisdom found in each and every bottle of our Gift of the Magi.

3.70,75l bottle from Beergium. According to the bottle, this is 12% and lager, but who knows. Clear, red and brown with orange color beer pours a good head. Aroma has dried fruits, wood, malts and caramel. Taste has malts, caramel, wood and leather. Herbs in the dry end. Full- body, alcohol does exist but not dominating. Also this Lost Abbey has some quality.
2.9Piana obfita, zólta, nieco mydlana, pozostaje w postaci chmurki. Barwa bursztynowa, opalizujaca. W aromacie nuty miodowe, slodowe, do tego troche kandyzowanych moreli, ziól, kontynentalnego chmielu. W smaku pólslodkie, czuc lagerowy charakter, slodowosc, herbatnikowosc, jest troche syropu klonowego, brzoskwin, troche miodu, srednia, trawiasto przyprawowa goryczka, rozgrzewajacy finisz. Oleiste, pelne w odbiorze, ze srednim wysyceniem.
Piwo bez historii - ot porzadny mocny lager, któremu sporo brakuje do porzadnych piw w tym stylu (np. Brown Paper Bag). Rozczarowuje praktycznie brak brettów, za to dominujace miodowe akcenty maja chyba nawiazywac do swiatecznego charakteru trunku... Na plus niezle ulozenie alko.
3.7Bottle. Pours a murky light brown with a thin head, lots of sediment. Aroma of dark fruits, sweet malt. Flavor of dark fruits, raisin, booze, bready sweet malts, candy sugar, spices. Unfortunately I don’t get much Brett at this point. It is still a tasty, malty farmhouse ale, definitely on the strong side.
7/4/8/4/14 (3.7/5)
3.6Hazy Amber Brownthin Lacy beige head
Aroma is mild if Any sweet wildberry notes
Flava is rich grainy some slight molasses and alcohol notes
Feels thick creamy foamy smooth
Fins tangy dry some licorice notes
3.8Aroma is dark fruit, grainy/earthy malts and pixie sticks/sugar. The flavor is dark fruit/fruit, caramel, mild bubblegum, malts and a slightly sweet/warming alcohol finish.
3.2Opaque, dark, reddish-brown with a thick beige head; big chucks of sediment clinging to the bottom of glass. Big red grape juice and caramel aromas. Taste follows the smell and leads with the sweet grape juice & caramel; a lot of hops in the mid-palate and finishes with spice & booze. Medium-full mouthfeel with a very sharp, biting carbonation up front; carb dies away pretty quickly, tho. Warms up some booze astringency.
3.6Tap at brewery. Pours clear copper. Aroma is lager yeast esters, pale malt, citrus hops, and earthy brett. Flavor is refreshing up front with crisp carbonation and lager yeast esters that flows into more farmhouse notes as the beer dries before the finish where just a hint of booze is present; hides the ABV well. Medium body.
3.7Draft at the brewery. Pours clear bright reddish copper with a creamy beige head. Tastes like dried fruits, light booze, candied malt, spice, and light funk. Medium body and low carbonation. Smells like dried fruits, light booze, light herb, light spice, candied malt, and light funk.
5.0For a lager, this is a bombshell. Rich amber color with a lively white head of soft carbonation. Sweet bread and light stone fruit characters with a pleasant alcoholic burn. Lost Abbey is an incredible brewery and they made the best lager ever.
3.9Deep amber with a light haze and off white head. Nice sweet and moderately malty with dry fruit characteristic of quads with a spiced saison yeast character.
Notes: Bottle from Brian at Eric’s bottle share, Dec ’16.
3.4Dark caramel malt, sweet fruit, ripe, some light spice, toast. A bit of a warm boozy finish. Not all that impressive.
3.3pours a dark amber from tap with a nice crema. aromas of warm spices, clove, and other familiar belgian-style ale scents. medium body with a slightly cloyingly sweet mouthfeel. decent finish with aftertaste of noble hops and brett funk. a solid example of a belgian ale.
4.4Lost Abbey’s Gift of the Magi is on par with the seasonal offerings imported from Belgium at this time of year. It’s a sweet/spicy brew with more than a little booziness. Dark fruit and candy sugar aromatics. Fig, date, plum, raisin, prune, and molasses flavors. Warm, full-bodied feel - this is a sipper for chilly day. An exceptionally rainy California day will also work in lieu of a chilly day.
3.8A great seasonal. Some hints of molasses and brown sugar with a lighter bodied profile.
3.5Bomber. Oddly I chose to rate this for the first time using a 2013 version.
A burnt gold hue with a large, foamy tan head that lasts and laces well. Aromas of caramel, molasses, plum, raisin, date, spice, light yeast and orange. Flavor is caramel, orange, date, raisin, molasses, spice, yeast, earthy and funky notes on the end. Medium plus bodied, smooth with a dry end. Still some warmth as well.
4.6Rating #1934 - 2015.09.25 - #CraftTakesSeattle Day 2, Beer 34 - Bottle (2008) from Brouwer’s Cafe. Dark brown pour with a bubbly tan head, decent retention.heavy on carbonation Aroma is quite fruity. Full bodied. Creamy, buttery mouthfeel. Taste is ripened peaches, currant, raisin, spiciness. Extremely smooth finish and a lingering taste of sweet malt. Superb.
3.7Tap at Harry’s Hofbrau. Last time I had this was about 10 years ago. I remember it fondly, but hard to live up to a decade of memories. Still very tasty. Moderately complex with dark fruit.
3.5Bottiglia 75 CL, colore tonaca di frate con un cappello di schiuma fine e persistente. Aroma maltato, caramello, frutta sotto spirito e lieviti. Al palato è dolce e i suoi 10 gradi non si fanno sentire
3.8Pours a hazy golden orange from the bomber with fluffy off-white head that leaves moderate lace. Aroma of big spice notes and Belgian esters over a hint of oxidized malts. Taste follows with less of the oxidation and more of the spice. Bubbly carbonation, booze is balanced, solid.
4.4Hazy amber under a thick light beige foamy head. Lovely Belgian Christmas ale tones of cranberries, figs, dates and a little piney citrus. Full palate with a keen orange peel and Belgian Amber malt, a wee touch of mulling spices and just the tiniest bit of red wine. Boozy belgish dusty malty fruity finish, and a light bretty funk throughout.
3.5Orange-brown pour, small off-white head. Aroma of raisins and fruit. Flavor of prune, raisins, figs, spices, fruit and booze.
3.922 oz bottle pours a dark amber color with a small white head. Aromas of raisins, plums, dark fruits, belgian yeast. Full bodied, a nice big beer.
3.5On tap, don’t remember where. Pour is slightly hazy amber with a medium white head. Aroma and flavor of dark fruit, spice, and doughy grain. Finish is spice with a hint of booze.
3.5The aroma is raisin, fruit, yeast. The appearance is deep, clear amber, off white head. The flavor is sweet, fruity, raisins, plum, yeast, pine The finish is yeast, chalky, spicy, light pine hops. Medium in body Nice overall, a tad weak on the aroma. Maybe because this was overaged.
3.8750 ml corked and caged, vintage stamped on neck, but it’s smudged.
Aroma is fruity, raisin, honey, toffee, floral hops.
Flavor is sweet, raisin, fig, spicy hops. Alcohol is hidden well. Bought from the seasonal markdown shelf at Total Wine. Since it is a Christmas themed beer, and it was after Christmas, I got it for $3.99. Easily the best buy of the year so far.
4.5Raisins and a slight plum taste. Very smooth. 1 finger head upon pour into Trappist glass. Alcohol, as prev noted by others, very well hidden. A fantastic beer.
3.7This bottle has an abv of 12%. Pour is cloudy reddish amber with a slight white head and no lacing, nice unusual color. Aroma of raisin, plum, caramel, honey, and earth. Nice balance of flavors, fruity but not too sweet, has a medium noble hop bitterness, full body, creamy texture, soft carbonation, lingering fruity finish. The alcohol is well hidden. Very good for the price ($9.99 at The Boulevard Liquor). The promo text/deScription on the bottle is kind of cheesy.
3.7Bottle. Murky amber pour. Nice fruity and candy notes. Very nicely balanced, quite tasty. Really delicious.
3.7Heavy on the dried fruit, raisins, etc. Some Belgian yeast as well. A bit of booze shines through, but this is still quite drinkable. Good beer.
4.175cl bottle served in a teku. Pours a lovely clear light amber colour with a voluminous and fluffy white head. Aroma is slightly underwhelming presumably down to the massive head suppressing a lot of the aromas. Taste is upfront toffee and a grainy/cereal quality with a quite profound bitterness which perfectly balance one another with a wonderful spicy backdrop. A perfect Christmas drink and almost too easy drinking with the 10% ABV being completely undetectable.
