Five thousand years ago the Mayan Calendar last turned over. Since then, Nostradamus, The Book of Revelations and random Shaman have all prognosticated that mankind would meet a fateful end. Currently, our demise is scheduled for December 21, 2012 for it has been so decreed our world is about to end not in a Christian Judgment Day but rather a Mayan Apocalypse.
Funny thing is, the Mayans don’t actually believe in the concept of an Apocalypse. We at The Lost Abbey didn’t want to miss an opportunity to update our original Judgment Day recipe to accompany us as we collide towards this impending Rapture. Like us, we’re pretty sure you can believe in dried Chiles, Cinnamon and Tamarind working well together in this beer. This means you can count on this little bottle of beer to help you survive this cultural Armageddon. Please pop the cork and enjoy this version. We’ve got you covered. See you on December 22nd wherever life may take us.

4.0375ml corked bottle. Rich chocolate aroma with notes of cinnamon and dark fruit. Pours dark brown with a thin tan head and some lacing. Starts with dark chocolate as well as dark fruit, mostly raisin, flavors. Finishes fairly smooth with notes of cinnamon as well as a bit of booze that lingers with the chocolate on the palate. Rich, complex beer.
3.7December 27, 2014. Bottle at home.
Murky brown with a small tan ring. Aroma is caramel, canned peaches, pear, prunes, figs, raisins and alcohol. Finish is light bitter with sweet fruits, light roasted notes and faint alcohol. Medium bodied, a bit water texture, almost flat carbonation.
4.2May 4th, 2013 - The third gift here on the anniversary of Lost Abbey’s birth is the Mayan Apocalypse Judgment Day. While the body is dark, black and ominous (even in a relatively thin glass) the top is a bleached tan color, with a heavy mottled thickness. This tamps down the aroma, though I still detect a fresh, water nutty aroma, complemented by the botanical sweetness of sprouted malt and a tough of bitterness from cocoa powder. There might also be a bit of cooked bacon from a smoked ingredient. The flavor is massively more intense than the aroma. Here again bacon makes a welcome appearance, made drinkable by a malty layer. The blend is akin to a scotch ale, or whatever offspring would come out of the unholy union of scotch ale and a barley wine. It’s those deep, sweet caramel rich malts followed by the intense punctuation of cocoa nibs. As for the palate, it’s soft and pillowy, and brings a slew of other flavors to the surface: raisin, freshly Aeropressed coffee, teriyaki and a good punch of alcohol. It’s another incredible beer, and is the third knock out brew in a row.

4.0Bottle at Craftheads. Yum. Aroma is porridge, sweetness, quad stuff, sweet maltiness, bit of fruit, no sign of the spice. Taste is great. Dubbel like beefiness, sweet, maybe a touch of spice at the end. Raisins. Good stuff. Classic quad with a spicy finish. Boozy at the end too.
3.7Bottle. Pours deep dark brown, with a red hue, and a nice creamy layer of mocha head. Aroma is really nice roasted malts with chocolate, bread and dark fruits, as well as wood, leather and good, hot notes of chili. All very mellow, and nicely balanced. Creamy body with soft carbonation. Flavour is sweet roasted malts with cocoa and bread, hot peppery chili, and dark fruits, raisins and berries, leather, wood and liquorice. Lingering sweet, hot finish.
4.00,33 pullo@ Vihreä Haltijatar. Samea, kermaisen tummanruskea. Tuoksussa mallasta, luumua, taateleita, rusinoita, hyvin tummaa, lähes palanutta kinuskia. Maussa paahteista mallasta, alkoholia, hieman tummaa suklaata, tummaa ylikypsää marjaa. Kermainen tuntuma, sopivan kevyt samalla.
4.3.375l bottle @ Haltiatar
Pours deep dark red with low off-white head. Aroma is hops, dark malts, syrup, hops and plums. Some dark bread.
Flavor is alcohol, dark malts, some burned notes, dark fruits, plums, bitter hops and coffee. Swell!
3.5Pours dark brown with no head. Aroma of dates, raisins, figs, milky chocolate, spices, butter scotch, ripe plums and syrup. You kinda know what this beer is about when you stick your nose into it. Taste has those same sweet notes with all the ripe fruits and the more syrupy notes behind. Also has some heat in the end. Kinda nice but maybe too much of a sipper due to the extremely sweetness - which gets a bit one-sided in the long run.
3.637,5cl bottle. Pours dark brown, almost black with a tiny, brown head. Aroma has huge, dried fruity notes. Lots and lots of raisins, prunes, dates, figs and so on. Some alcohol, caramel malts and some milky chocolate here as well. Taste has dark roast, and corresponding bitterness, coffee, lots of "milka" chocolate, port wine, syrup, caramel and again lots of these dark, dried, overripe fruits. A bit of molasses as well. Medium-low carbonation and medium-full body. Fine beer, but gets exhausting in bigger amounts.
4.312.7 fl.oz bottle @ Vihreä Haltiatar. Pours deep ruby with a low tan head. Aroma is malts, dark fruits, alcohol and tamarind. Flavor is sweet malts, dark fruits, tamarind, chili, cinnamon, alcohol and hops. Very nice!
4.1"#4500! Cin and peppers expected, tamarind was not. Totally cool, unique, and decadent unexpected treat. I like the base beer and this version was deeelicious. Low heat, all kinds of complexity, and sweetness..."
3.8Bottle from backlog.
Very dark with a large beige head, when opened, the cork shoots off like opening a champagne bottle.
Aroma: malty, fruity, licorice, wool.
Taste: wool mittens, earthy, spices, a hint of milk chocolate, licorice, dried fruit.
Full-bodied.
4.0Bottle shared by BVery - thanks!! Dark brown pour with a nice tan head. Big fruity and cinnamon spiced nose. Fruity taste with just a hint of heat. Nice.
4.0Bottle. Dark amber pour with a brownish head. Dark fruit, chili peppers, and a little spice in the aroma. Smooth palate. Very tasty - really digging this!
3.1Bottle at Craig’s. Pours murky brown, no real head. Aromas of light spice and toffee. Taste is ore of the same, bit sticky. OK.
3.4Murky light brown, filmy and ringed beige head. Chalky yeast, without being banana estery - lemon, grain, well played with lego and light spice. Soft lip fizzing spice, but no burn. More American strong than anything else, rich and unmilled oatiness. Thin and unsweet. Decent enough.
Bottle, Let’s Go Digita Tasting

(Rating #5574)
3.6Dark brown with a good sized beige head. Aroma is dates, toffee, prunes, chocolate, toffee. Medium-full bodied, fruity and sweet on the palate, with a slight astringency on the finish. Taste is dates, prunes, raisins, hint of burning spice. Nice.
4.6Znakomite quadrupel amerykanskie. Fajna buteleczka korkowana, a korek hucznie strzelil. Aromat porto i winiaku. Wyglad to piekne ciemnobrazowe piwo z bordowym refleksem. W smaku jakby sliwki, rodzynki i rum. Alkoholowa nuta wyczuwalna. Szlachetny alkohol przyjemnie rozgrzewa i relaksuje. Wspaniale piwo, swietnie pasowalo do francuskiego sera plesniowego. Polecam
3.2Bottle from Martys, drunk 4/5/14
Very fragrant nose, pralines and toffee, quite lighthearted for such a big beer. Some light prunes add tartness and the caramel-vanilla cream sweetness actually sits in the background.
Dark, mahogany with ruby tints. The head is light tan and moderately well-retained.
Phew. Strong. Chiles are very lightly notable and sweet chocolate, tart prunes and almost a mint-like spiciness really shock the palate. Warmth on the end, though it’s not overtly alcoholic. Toffee sweetness is chewy, but the ample, expansive carbonation obliterates any sense of syrupiness/thickness that may exist here. Still, you can’t hold back such bold flavors, even with the disruptive carbonation, and it gets pretty fatiguing after just a few sips. Do love the chiles, though and the chocolate-cinnamon note is quite reserved and adds more complexity. Actually quite astringent on the finish. Like eating a dried red chili pepper soaked in tamarind and soy sauce. Ok, not really. I don’t know. Seems pretty far-gone from the base Judgment Day. Belgian, strong or light are still subtle beers and chili, cinnamon and tamarind really don’t work with them. Or so I think.
3.2Bottle sample at a tasting at Beer Market Jaffa. Thanks Tom L. Pours an hazy brown with a nice beige head, aroma of dark bread, chocolate, spices, Pumpkin, flavor of Pumpkin, sweet and bitter, medium to full bodied.
3.6My Bottom Line:
Raisiny sweetness, alcohol heat and delicate spiciness evolve within this creative take on the Quadrupel style.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam laces around the cloudy brown.
-Spices and chili are well integrated and could be mistaken for yeast phenolics. This is not a spice bomb, thankfully.
-Effervescence is relatively soft on the palate, which in turn makes the residual sugars feel a tad too heavy.
-This one’s great with pecan nuts, for example.
Bottle. Thx Clark!
3.7March 24, 2014 - on tap at the tasting room. Dark brown pour with nice head and lacing. Aroma was sweet, dark fruit and spice. Taste was consistent with aroma.
4.2Sampled at Lost Abbey on 3/19//2014. This Abbey Quad pours a dark amber brown color from the tap. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is dark fruit, dates, brown sugar and some chilies. Medium to full bodied Abbey Quadruple. The malts are dark fruit and sweet, brown sugar, molasses and dates. The hops are herbal and earthy. Big dark quad with some chili and other spices. Light carbonation. Nice balance between the malts and the spices. Very smooth. Finish is smooth and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is sweet with a touch of spice.
