Ne Goeien is Flemish for "A Good One." We’d like to think this beer is exactly that. When we invited Hildegard Van Ostaden from Urthel to come brew with us at Port Brewing, we hoped the collaboration of our brewers and her passion for brewing would result in one fine beer. A simple Saison styled beer with firm bitterness is all she requested. From the beginning, it was easy to imagine this beer as Ne Goeien all the way.

Ne Goeien Saison
2008 bottle. Thanks to my brother in law Ryan. Cheers! Pors murky gold with a thick white head and good retention. Aroma is grassy with notes of pears and other fruits without the requisite sweetness. A little spicy. Flavor is bone dry and tangy with good citrus notes and a spicy quality. Highly drinkable
3.72008 Bottle courtesy of Ernesto987. Held up very well over 3 years. Very crisp and clean tasting with a spicy/bready taste. Has a nice lemony crispness. Pretty good saison.
3.9Bottle found on shelf, 2008 in 2011. Lemon and bread on nose. Citrus wheat saison. Bitterness on finish. Def saison yeast strain. Might be too cold ATM. A good summery beer.
4.02008 Bottle via Footbalm - thanks Eric. First glass pours a clear golden color with an inch of bubbly white head. Lots of bubbles. Nose is fresh and clean. Spicey florals, grassey, malts, and straw. Very approachable scent. The mouthful is smooth and full-bodied. A little fruit comes forth, seems like apples. A little more straw, some grain, florals, and grass. Maintains a nice malty sweetness and the apple stays in the mix. Some florals bitters. Works well together and very good overall.
3.0750ml bottle into a Lost Abbey glass...Thanks to Sean for popping this Sunday...Pours a light gold, not very appealing, a very foamy head, great retention, light lacing...Super sweet aroma, its all honey with a light hop finish...Taste is similarly sweet all honey, almost to the point of distracting and makes it tough to drink, especially in the summer when I want something a little refreshing, especially at 5.5%. There is a light hoppy bite on the finish. This is not easy to drink, too sweet.
I wouldn’t recommend trading for this, but I’d probably drink it again.
2.4Fresh bottle, consumed in 2008. Bright lemon yellow. Tight, uniformly-bubbled foam. Very unappealing nose of plastic, green banana, baked apples, coriander, floral hops, and black pepper. Touch of clove and lemon zest. Airy carbonation. Fuzzy on the tongue. Flavors are tangy and disharmonious with unripe banana clashing with extremely astringent notes of plastic, coriander and alcohol. Flabby body, fairly vegetal, with a pervasive baked-apple sweetness deadening the brighter nuances, Dull, wet, slightly grainy malt. Overabundance of slippery melon notes, also. Closes slickly with some floral hops trying to poke through, and ghostlike hay-tinged malt lingering. Pretty much on par with the rest of Lost Abbey Belgians…extremely unpolished and tainted with plastic.
3.9750ml courtesy of BOLTZ – thanks J! Pours light gold with a 2 finger snow white head. The nose is lemon zest, wheat, spice and light yeast. The taste is spicy yeast, dusty wheat, light citrus and coriander with a slight bitter hop finish. Medium prickly mouthfeel. Very good.
3.8Bottle pours cloudy gold with a white head. Aroma shows notes of lemon, yeast, and saltine crackers. Flavor shows the same with additional notes of wheat, apple, and a touch of spice. Overall body is
light to moderate, and somewhat bitter.
4.0yellow with white head. Aroma of lemon, yeast and citrus. Taste is sweet with a nice hop bite. Medium bodied with slightly bitter finish. Good stuff!
3.8(750ml courtesy of mike). Pours hazy yellow with white head. Aroma of lemon, yeast and citrus and a little must. Taste is sweet with a nice hop bite. Medium bodied with slightly bitter finish. Nice saison.
3.0750ml bottle pours a clear gold with a hazy, white head. Nose is mild, honey, chalk, flowers. Flavor is sweet, yeasty, malty, flowers, honey. Finish is mild, lightly chalky. Straight forward saison.
4.1Exactly as intentioned apparently. Some positive Noble hops. Delicious cracker, biscuit malt flavors. Nothing spicy or fancy. Just straightforward golden delicious (slightly fruity, apple) ale with low esters and hops coming through in the nose and taste. Excellent stuff with Urthel and Lost Abbey signatures.
3.7transparent gold, bubbly frothy white head. Lots of lemon, wheat, and faint pepper, not very complex but balanced. Flavor similar, lots of lemon and Brett, light pepper. Palate a bit overcarboned, accentuates thin profile. Not as soapy as the Red Barn, more floral, but both similar in heavy carbonation and light floral shades.
3.2750 ml bottle courtesy of MrChopin, thanks very much! Hazy golden color. Aroma of straw and lemon. Taste is malt with a hint of bitterness. Not bad.
3.7A: The pour is a nice golden orange color with a big, fluffy, clingy white head.
S: A solid malt base with bready pale malts and hints of honey. Some floral and grassy hop notes along with a light citrus zest and yeast component.
T: The flavor is light and crisp with the same clean malt base detected in the nose. Some mild bitterness along with a light grassy flavor and minimal citrus.
M: The body is medium with a really crisp and refreshing feel on the tongue.
D: I wish I could have tried this fresh, but this was still pretty nice. Easy to drink, clean, and quite refreshing for a warm day here in Southern California.
4.0A: opaque straw yellow, with a nice white head. good retention and lacing.
S: some citrus form the malts, some nice funk aromas in there. solid malts in the aroma, very enticing.
T: great citrus saison flavors, lemon, oranges, with a variety of funky characteristics, wonderful spices in there as well.
M: smooth and delightful. solid medium bodied saison, with a great palate. perfect carbonation level.
D: phenomenally drinkable. put a bottle down by myself rather easily.
3.72010-07-03. Lightly hazy golden yellow body with a large billowy white head and lace. Floral grassy aroma, light yeast. Flavour is similar, grassy bitterness up front, modest spice and yeast, grassy hops linger long into the finish. Average palate is fairly smooth. Pretty good, grassy profile is not entirely to my personal taste. Has held up very well. 2008 Vintage Bottle at Brouwers, Seattle
3.6[3091-20100703] 1pt9.4floz bottle. Odd mild yeast aroma. Slightly hazy, medium orange body with a long-lasting creamy white head and pretty lattice lacing. Plastic saison yeast flavour has a long yeasty aftertaste. Medium body. So very many zombies in this bar now. Nice beer.
Overheard: "Bourbon dragon sauce?" "It’s made with real dragons!"

3.7A: Golden-straw body with a moderate head capping things off. Good retention and lacing.
S: This is a classic smelling saison. Funky. Farm fresh. Lemon. Grass. Blowing wind. Yeast and a nice bitter lingering.
T: The complexity is lost somewhere as the nose transfers to the palate. While still maintaining the overall feel of the nose, the distinctions between the flavors become muted. Still a nice treat, the farm fresh funk and green grass is nice.
M: Good carbonation leads to a crisp, refreshing brew.
O: All around a good saison. Doesn’t hold up to some of the big boys, but that is NO reason to not get your hands and enjoy this well crafted beverage!
3.8750 mL bottle. Dark golden cloudy pour with a medium off white head. Aroma of barnyard, yeast and grapefruit. Medium bodied taste of yeast, citrus hops and a nice array of farmhouse spices. Lasting dry finish.
3.6750mL shared into flutes at Lost Abbey. It poured a clear, bright gold with a lively white head that had excellent retention and lace. Aroma is funky old malts, old candy, reminiscent of a De Dolle type of blonde with candi sugar masked by musty yeast. Taste is very dry, grassy hops bitter, white wine dryness, lemon zest, lemonade. Very simple, refreshing, not so funky or horsey. Zippy, bubbly palate.
3.6750 ml bottle with "2008" on the label (was this the only batch?). I’ve been sitting on this one for a while now. Pours a clear golden yellow with two fingers of white head that reduces to a nice layer of foam that stays constant (apparently 2008 was one of the good years for carbonation at the Lost Abbey) . Aroma is bright yeast, fruity esters (orange, lemon), caramel-y bread-y malts, but only a hint of spice. Flavor on the sweet side with caramel maltiness most prominent along with other notes of fruit and a slight hoppy bitterness. But as with the nose, not much spice. Dry finish with somewhat thick and heavier mouthfeel for the style. Good, but might be past its prime now after two years. (191, 323)
4.3Light yellow. Thin white head. Very light and refreshing. I taste a little bit of the herbs. A pretty good beer.
3.5From 25.9oz,hazy,yellow-pale,white head,grass,light body, average carbonation, bitter.
3.8Pours a hazy yellow color with a thin white head. Nice aroma of lemon, banana, spices and peppery yeast. Very good flavor of lemon, banana, peppery yeast and spices. The body is light with a creamy texture and moderate carbonation. This collaboration provides us with a very flavorfull saison, nicely done.
3.6750ml bottle from Julio’s
Appearance : Clear pale yellow with a big head. Some lacing.
Aroma : Some yeast with some esters but not a lot. Hints of fruits but not much either. Rather dusty. Some crisp and fresh hops. Spicy notes.
Taste : Yeasty and dusty. Light hints of fruits. Finish is bitter and a bit citrusy. Finish is a bit fruity
Overall : I’m pretty sure this is past its prime. Nose is not bad but taste is rather bland. Quite drinkable and rather refreshing. I’m a bit disappointed about this one but I suspect its past its prime. I’m getting more fruits near the end of the bottle.
4.1Bottle. [thank you, after4ever]
Clear golden with a lovely, staying, creamy, white head. Fair duration. Aroma has pilsner, pepper, piney hops, crisp malts. Light funky. Highish carbonation, fine, very dry mouthfeel. Flavour is very elegantly dry and light spicy. Crisp malts, super peppery, some piney hops. Lovely dryness. Extremely elegant and very well-balanced saison. Very good. I want more!
4.6Served in my sacred kwak glass. A rocky head of snow white foam sits atop a hazy golden colored elixir. A yeasty aroma, with light malt and hop undertones that makes my mouth water for summer grilling season. A solid saison body, but as described, hopped up! A drying mouth finish, this beer falls decidedly on the love side of my love/hate opinion of lost abbey. Truly excellent!
3.8Bottle. Poured a clear light orange color. The head was fluffy and white with god retention and lacing. The aroma was spice dominated with vanilla and ginger notes. Light to medium bodied and dry with distinct bitterness at the end. Moderate carbonation. Less fruity and more earthy than many of the saisons out there. I tasted earthy hops, a bit of wet stone, pale malt, subdued dried apricot, and mellow spices (especially white pepper). if you’re looking for a modest saison in the farm-hand tradition, this would be a good pick.
4.0Bottle shared by kmweaver on 8/24/08: Slightly hazy bright goldenpour has a pillowy frothy white head that leaves nice full lacing as it subsides. Aroma of fresh floral notes and biscuity pale malt with a touch of citrusy orange. Body starts with good fullness and smooth carbonation along with a crisp biscuity malty sweetness and grassy bittering hops with an authentic Belgian yeast strain. A nicely balanced, smooth and enjoyable saison.
