Lost Abbey Red Poppy Ale

Lost Abbey Red Poppy Ale

Perhaps no country embraces the use of fruit in beers more so than Belgium. Numerous traditional as well as regional specialty ales are infused with every sort of fruit imaginable. In this way, the flavor of the fruit becomes especially prominent. Red Poppy Ale is a veritable celebration of Sour Cherries in an explosion of aromas and tastes. Brewed from a brown ale base and aged in our oak barrels for over 6 months, this beer is not for the faint of heart. The Golden Poppy is the state flower of California and the Red Poppy is found in Flanders Fields where our inspiration for this beer comes from.

4.1 Draft at Hops & Pie Sour, Wild, and Fruited Fest 2016 4-23-16
4.1 12.7 fl oz bottle, at the Beer Jerk Bunker bottle share, thanks to Emma. Pours slightly hazy orange brown. Biscuit, pepper, slightly earthy, cherry, orange zest, touch of strawberry, little sharp acetic acid, touch of barnyard funk stuff. Medium body. Very good, really very good.
3.9 Flaske. Smagen er gennemgående let/medium syrlig, lidt skjult frugtig sødme/kirsebær, meget meget dæmpet fad, let bitterhed langt ude i eftersmagen. Ikke for alle, men ganske fin
3.7 Barwa rubinowa, piana mała. Aromat wiśniowy, stajenny, koński. W smaku wiśniowe, pestkowe, dzikie, lekkie drewno. Mocno kwaśne. Dość wysokie wysycenie. Fajne pifko.
3.5 Perhaps it is a beer that really wants to be a wine, or it is a wine that cannot forget that it is a beer. Very awesome sour taste.
4.0 375 ml bottle at home at 6.5% ABV. Pours a nearly clear amber with a quickly disappearing off-white head. The aroma is funky, leather, barnyard, some sour cherries, marzipan, wood, hints of vinegar, hay and indeed hints of poppy seed. Medium body with an average carbonation, a medium acidity, and a light to medium tartness. The flavor start with sour cherries, some balsamic vinegar, lots of wood oak, vanilla, marzipan and poppy seeds. Finishes dry with wood, some poopy seed and hints of almonds. The smell is very unique. The taste is not as exceptional but still excellent. Overall very good! Aroma: 8 Appearance: 4 Taste: 8 Palate: 4 Overall: 16
Medium krop. Letdrikkelig og lækker!
3.8 2016 bottle. Huge pop when I removed the cork. It pours a murky brown, almost like rust. Substantial head of foam that's pretty long lasting. Some sticky off white lacing. Smells of sour cherries, oak, hints of Brett but the sour rules. Sour cherries taste with some oaky woody notes. Brett flavour buried fairly deep but I get it. Relatively high on the sourness scale for me. Medium bodied with lively carbonation. Very good but I have had this before, 2009 and 2010, and I reckon that I was more impressed back then. Maybe it's because so many excellent Wild Ales have been brewed since then?
3.9 Tap. Light hay and grain for the malt, faint citrus for hops, moderate musty barn for the yeast, with cherry and baking spices in the background. Head is small to average, frothy, slightly off-white, with some slippery lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is medium rusty brown. Flavor starts moderately to heavily acidic and sour, then finishes heavily acidic and moderately bitter. Palate is light to medium, watery, with a fizzy carbonation and a dry and tart finish. These Sour Browns are starting to grow on me, and this one was very enjoyable.
3.4 Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 29C/19C). Bottle 37.5 cl - Batch unknown (BBF unknown). AROMA: medium sour aroma with lactic-like notes, slight barnyard and a low cherry background. APPEARANCE: dark ambar color with rubi color against light. medium tanned head with good retention. TASTE: medium sour flavor with a slight barnyard character, low wood and cherry. medium-low bitterness with a dry finish. PALATE: medium-low body with medium carbonation. OVERALL: a sour brown with a faint cherry touch and almost imperceptible base beer.
3.9 Restrained aroma in a mahogany pour. Laid back tart taste with hints of cherry, berry, and wood. An excellent example of the style - and one that compares well with the Belgian masters.
3.9 37,5cl bottle, bought at Bierbaum, split at Gyhallmanti’s 1K tasting. Cork comes of with a small pop. No gusher. Appearance: slightly murky brown with yeast particles and medium sized offwhite head. Aroma: cherries, brett, hint of wood, some red fruits. Taste: medium sweetness, medium bitterness and pretty high tartness. Notes of brett, lemon zest, subtle cherries and some tannins. Tartness reduces a bit over time. Palate: medium bodied, watery slick texture and medium carbonation. Good stuff.
3.7 37,5cl bottle split with a3aan_uit, SimonBlok and emjolnir during my 1K deluxe beer tasting. Aroma of Brett, cherries, slight malt, tart, slight funk. Taste is moderate sweet, moderate bitter with a medium dry and very sour finish. Notes of Brett, tart, slight vinous, slight olives, slight cherries. Texture is oily to watery, light bodied with moderate to soft carbonation
4.3 Courtesy of @Simon Blok. Smells like coffee. Awesome taste with sour cherry. First of a large group of beers.
4.1 Lekkere sour bier met een hint van kersen, die de smaak iets voller maakt. Een aanrader voor liefhebbers van zure bieren!
3.5 Pours dark brown with hints of red to it, no foam to talk of. Aromas are vague with hints of sweet malt, cola, wine and sour cherries. Taste is very acidic and sour with tones of cola, citrus and ripe cherries.
4.0 Nice and complex. Tart cherry with subtle funky notes. A little tart for my liking but great represent of the style. Pretty and smooth body.
3.7 Cherry, oak, bourbon, prunes in aroma. Dark red almost brown color with small head. Sour, cherry. Dry finish. Light body, medium carbonation.
4.1 Duft citrus lime krydret karamel lidt appelsin skald Smag sur lime smage lidt grøn som kantus karamel kant rugbrød lidt frugt
3.4 Aroma of sour cherries. Sour taste of citrus and sour cherries. Notes of wood with light tartness in the aftertaste
3.7 Amber color. Medium sized, off-white head . Funky aroma with notes of wood and cherries . Moderately sour with touch of sweetness.
3.9 Thanks David for sharing the bottle! Poured into a taster showing turbid deep amber with half a finger of latte colored quickly dissipating foam. The nose shows pronounced notes of sour cherries with dry oak in the background. The palate is well carbonated and light bodied. Strong tartness with light flavors of oak and cherry.
4.2 28/07/2023 Opaque red/dark brown beer with a slight off-white/beige head. Medium/heavy aroma; taste starts medium sweet and ends slightly bitter and dry. Oak, cherry, tart and citrus. 8/5/8/4 05/05/2018 Opaque dark brown beer with slight yeast and with a slight/medium beige head. Medium/heavy aroma; taste starts medium sweet and ends slightly bitter and dry. Oak, cherry and tart. 2016 version. 8/5/9/4
4.0 20-APR-2018, bottle @Ulkløbben meeting @Sonni. Hazy amber with a lasting, tan head. Cherries, oak, red wine, Brown ale. Tart, acidic. Nice.
3.9 0,375l bottle from Beergium. Light reddish brown beer with good light beige head. Aroma has tart, yeast, cherries, oak and vanilla. Very nice. Taste is quite sour and tart. It has also cherries, wood and vanilla. Medium body, low carbonation. Very nice one, cherries are not dominating too much, which is good. Normally not my style of beer, but this is good.
2.0 I know it has perfect ratings but I wasn’t a fan of it. Too tart for my taste. Maybe it’s just the style.
4.1 Aromat: wyraźnie dziki, wiśniowy i kwiatowy, na granicy landrynek. Nieco drewna czy końskiej derki.. Wygląd: barwa głęboko czerwona, niemal bugrundowa, klarowna, piękna.Piana beżowa, drobno pęcherzykowa, obfita i trwała, ładnie zdobi szkło. W smaku wyraźnie kwaśne, aż początkowo wykręcające, wiśniowe, lekko kwiatowe. Zaskakująco lekkie. Goryczki praktycznie brak. Pełnia niska do średniej, wysycenie wysokie z minusem, natomiast zupełnie nie czuć tych 6.5 % alkoholu z obecnej wersji. Wszystko doskonale zbalansowane. Do tego te kwiaty... Szkoda jedynie, że ta przyjemność jest tak kosztowna.
