3.4 Golden cloudy color. Light funky, saison like smell. The taste is salty, spicy and a little to much lively carbonation bubbles. Very dry in the aftertaste.
3.7 Bottle from Whole Foods Market in Redwood City, CA. Aroma is musty, old wood, meadow, white wine, grape skins. Taste is mild white wine, some grapes, light lemon, dry oak. Interesting but was hoping for a little more funk and depth.
3.7 Well I had to get the cork out using my teeth! After that, aromas of meadow with sporadic wildflowers. Slight lemon and pepper became more apparent as it warmed. Hazy golden-orange with full white head of soapy bubbles that are retained. Taste is moderate spice and citric squeeze of lemon. Slight grittiness of sheathed wheat field. Finishes nicely dry. A little bit of barn but not too much. Very pleasant to drink.
3.9 Geez, that cork was wedged in there tight. Hazy yellowish orange, with a smallish white head. Smells grassy and yeasty. Taste is nicely tart, with some citrus and some winey notes, and grassy hops finish. I liked it...
3.8 Bottle at the brewery. Pours clear gold with a medium, frothy white head, long retention with excellent lacing. Aroma is citrus hops, pear esters, raisins, pepper, wheat malt and earthy yeast notes. Flavor is lightly tart citrus and tropical fruit, light crisp malt, pepper, raisins and a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation.
4.0 Hazy orange color, almost no head. Aroma is acidic, funk, vineous. Taste is light acid and dry, some bitterness and tartness at finish. Flavor is funk, citrus, grapes, bread, herbal. Aftertaste is tart, dry, bitter with citrus character. Medium body, thin texture and medium carbonation. Bretts do the work. Very good.
3.8 Hazy orange color with big white head. Grapey, fruity, funky fresh aroma. Fruity taste, dry, high carbonation, vineous, spicy. Even a little bit salty. A nice one, okay-priced as well! Quite complex.
3.8 Bottle poured at a blind tasting. Thanks Eugene. Pours a reddish orange color with a short fizz head. Slightly sour tropical fruit aroma. Sweet gummy fruit flavor with hints of spice.in the finish. Interesting. Nice beer here.
3.9 from Au Trappiste - hazy golden-blond beer with a moderate foam left; fresh aroma of raisins, apples and pears; light cheesy; medium-bodied, ively and tasty; dry, sour/bitter and with a late saltiness; fresh fruiy and funky finish with lingering peppery notes
3.4 375ml corked bottle. Lemon citrus aroma with notes of pepper. Pours hazy golden colored with a huge white head and no lacing. Starts with wheat and lemony citrus flavors. Finishes slightly dry with peppery flavors as well as a hint of Brett sourness. Interesting beer.
3.1 37,5 cl bottle (5,5%) @ tiong Aroma is a bit musty with some grainy malt and apricot. Also some citrus. Flavour is odd with berries, some soapy citrus, apricot and hayish wheat. Also fruit candy. Only faint traces of bretta here. Not that good.
3.7 375ml bottle from Bierkompass Pours clear orange with a thick white head. Aroma of bretta, funky yeast, tropical fruity hops, crisp malts and spices. Taste is crisp, funky yeasty and vinous with notes of bretta, fruits, spices and tartness. Finish is vinous, funky and crisp with notes of berries, bretta, spices and mild tartness. Quite interesting.
3.1 Corked and caged, 12.7 oz bottle VINTAGE 2013. Nose is malty, dusty, faintly sweet; a maple syrup-raisin thing going on there sans sweetness. Some creamy/vanilla character, too. Pours light golden with moderate carbonation and a large, tight/dense, Orvallish head. Taste is very dry, golden pils/pale malt with low bitterness, slightly oily and perfumed hops (think Strisselspalt), candi residue, black pepper and a touch of airiness (neither fit in well), very light sweaty tartness that near familiar regurgitation/vomit, and there’s some sagging bell pepper bile, but that’s about it for the funk. Zesty, lively citrus, medium-full body with no apparent alcohol. Not sure I like the mix, or the contribution of the raisins or yeast (would prefer the flavors contributed naturally by a saison yeast).
3.6 375 ml bottle to snifter (shared with the Mrs.). Looks good; a hazy golden orange with white head. Smells of honey, golden raisins, and a bit of spice with a mild Chardonnay-like presence. Tastes like it smells, but more bretty than raisiny, with a medium-bodied semi-dry mouthfeel. Enjoyable.
4.4 Bottle, 0.375l, shared with friends. Hazy pale golden color with thin creamy white head and average sparkling appearance. Aroma of funky brett, barnyard, white wine and fruits. Taste starts with light sweet biscuity malt, follows refreshing yeasty, vinous and fruity with dry peppery mouthfeel and moderate bitter finish. Full body, oily texture and average carbonation in palate. Excellent funky saison...
2.9 Bottled from Bierkoning, Amsterdam. Hoppy nose, lots of tropical fruit, white wine. Fruity flavor, pepper, yeasty, very dy. Saison appears to be a difficult style to make oustide of Belgium. This example appears to be quite "artificial", with flavors that do not really seem to be very balanced.
3.6 This poured a hazy yellow color with a white head. Atoms was lemony, peppery and yeast. Flavor similar, dry and light white wine and medium spice. OK.
3.9 Bottle. Cloudy yellow pour with a white head. Brett and mild hop aromas. Lots of yeast/bready notes with the spices playing their part. Not overly complex, but still interesting. Good body and mouthfeel.
3.9 Spicy aromas...some wild yeast presence on taste. white grapes and sparkling aftertaste. Very nice saison beer.
3.5 375 ml bottle, vintage 2013. Aroma is rather fruity with some overripe stone fruit and red apples. Quite a bit of grape character with some white wine notes. Medium white pepper character. Light grain notes. Pours a cloudy, pale, yellow hay with a small, thin, white head that recedes quickly to the edges where it disappears. Light lacing and small legs. Flavor is slightly sweet with some grape tannins and moderately strong white pepper notes. Some medium light raisin notes with some light stone fruit and red apple. Medium bitterness with a moderate mineral character. Light bready, graininess. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a decent saison but I don’t know that it is anything special. The white pepper seems a bit strong, especially in the flavor. I feel the water is a bit hard as well.
4.1 Fresh mown meadows. Slightly peppery nose. Really nice & inviting hazy golden body with healthy frothy head. Swirly cloudy clumps linger on surface. Taste borders on white wine but more funk, slightly acidic aftertaste lingers. Overall a very nice intersection of funk and ale. Made with golden raisins. Haven’t had those in a while.
3.5 Bottle. Pours ever so slightly hazy yellow, with a small airy head. Aroma is spicy yeast with lots of fruits, as well as sweet malts with bread, kandi and notes of biscuits and earth. Light body, with soft carbonation. Flavour is peppery yeast and sweet malts with bread, kandi, raisins. Sweet peppery yeast in the finish.
(Rating #5792)
3.9 "frikkin tasty dry saison from Lost Abbey. Citrusy hops, a little barnyard funk, slightly tart, and very refreshing. A little bit of white grape comes through in both the aroma and flavor. "
3.9 Bottle. Lively and sparkling beer. Aroma of champagne and dry white wine, with a hint of pepper and farmhouse. Complex taste of grassy yeast, grapjes, brett and a nice spicey white pepper afterburn. Quite an original saison.
Lite platt utan krispighet. Kanske inte helt okej. Dåligt skum och syrligheten indikerar något fel men ändå drickbar och riktigt god.
3.9 Dark yellow , 1 finger white head. Aroma of yeast, flowers, citrus, herbs. Taste is light bitter, light sour, slightly sweet. LIght body, slick texture, average carbonation. Very nice saison
2.9 A - dead flat pour of glowing apricoty straw. Zero head. S - nice enough nose. Bretts, Belgian yeast, cloves, straw, raisins, and spice. M - flat and flat. Wow. Really flat. Dry and bitter. Metallic. Flat dead palate. T - bitter dry grasses, cloves, Belgian yeasts, astringent and dry lemon peels. Very light fruity notes. O - bad bottle. Truly unremarkable.
3.8 Crystal clear sun golden colour with a frothy medium lasting white head (the beer gets hazy pouring the rest of the bottle, nice yeast cloudiness developping). On the nose aromas of white grapes, spices, barnyard and zesty fruit develop. A lovely bright carbonated texture develops with light fruity yet musty flavours with hints of spicyness and a brisk hop dryness in the finish. Light body and well balanced.
4.1 Bottle. Hazy bright golden body with a thick lasting white head. Looking really good, screaming come and get me! Ok I will. Yeasty aroma of pepper, fruit, light funkyness, grapefruit, taste quite dry, flowery, again light funky, citrus and peach, mild peppers which last long through the aftertaste, along with herbs from the italian cuisine, and the obvious fruity Nelson atste. Very nice.
