Lost Abbey Serpent's Stout

Lost Abbey Serpent's Stout

The history of the bible and religion is indeed the struggle of good vs. evil. Our Serpent’s Stout recognizes the evil of the dark side that we all struggle with. This is a massively thick and opaque beer that begs the saints to join the sinners in their path to a black existence.

3.9 Bottle. Pitch black, medium beige head, not so lasting. Mildly malty, slightly roasty and some whisky aroma, a bit of chocolate. Slightly burning alcohol, some sweetness, berries, medium bitterness. Slight blackcurrant and coffee finish. Gentler but lasting aftertaste. Strong roastiness. medium body. A bit too roasty for me, but ok.
4.4 Bottle from Perry’s Liquor & Craft Beer in Livermore, CA. Aroma is charred dark fruits, underbelly of coffee and dark chocolate (but more complex). Taste is tangy dark fruits, charred fruits, again complex mix of dark chocolate and coffee. An exception stout, World Class even.
4.3 On tap at Blackback Pub. Black with a foamy tan head. Flavors are roasted cereals, resinous hops, molasses, soy sauce and alcohol. Full body, moderate carbonation, oily texture.
4.1 Piwo pite dawno, ocena w celu uzupełnienia listy. Naprawdę dobry, gęsty, nisko wysycony, gładki.
4.4 Biggest advantage with this stout is it does everything well while being very smooth. The balance and overall experience is rich and full. Other stouts like Founders KBS and Stone Woot have more flavor but also bring more bitterness and booziness. A very very well balanced stout.
3.8 Fra 75cl flaske. Kulsort med beige skum. Dufter af kaffe, lakrids, malt. Smager af samme med en bitter eftersmag.
4.3 75cl Bottle @ Mikkeller Webshop, Copenhagen, Denmark. Black colour with a thin tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, cocoa, coffee, vanilla, hints of bourbon. Taste is roasted malt, dark chocolate, molasses, coffee, vanilla, licorice, bourbon, oak. Full body, soft carbonation.
4.2 On tap. Creamy and very thick body, bitterness note from toasty coffee beans. High quality stout. I did not get the chance to try their barrel aged stout, but I am sure it is really good.
4.1 Lost Abbey is held in high estimation and this is my first try with an imperial stout from them. I got the bomber in Chicago the middle of last year on a Cubs holiday. I remove the cage and cork (caution with that, just saying) and pour into my Great Heights Brewing snifter to determine a brown-black body finished topside by a exuberant head of very fine-bubbled foam. Pleasant scent, berry, chocolate and wheat bread. And then a taste, very decent, not life changing. I find charcoal, tobacco, leather, a bit of dark fruit and some dark chocolate. It tilts to the heavy side, I would prefer a little offset sweetness but that is me.
4.0 Taste at Trail's End. Pours black, with a medium, bubbly, brown head. The aroma is mocha, anise, cocoa powder, light brandy, toasted oak, and pecans. Sweet and malty, with a mild, pleasant, roasty bitterness. Heavy body, with a syrupy, chewy mouthfeel. Big and well made. Aggressively roasty. Nice.
3.5 Butelka leżakowana od września 2015. Piana wysoka, może lekkie przegazowanie? Ładnie zdobi szkło. W aromacie przede wszystkim gorzka czekolada, paloność, dalej lekko karmel, miód, ciemne owoce. W smaku raczej wytrawne, solidne palone, kawowe, wysoko wysycone. Mocna, palona goryczka. Alkohol trochę grzeje na finiszu. Fajny, charakterny RIS, świeży musiał być mocno agresywny.
4.2 Draft at Caliente's Bar and Pizza House in Pittsburgh on New Year's Eve. Also as a gift from Mark Lee in June 2023.
3.9 Bottle, from City Hops. Pours opaque dark brown with large spongy tan head, mocha-rum aroma, adequate carbonation, medium bitter mocha taste with cocoa nibs flavor, faint alcohol undertones, full body, long medium bitter mocha finish, well covered ABV, very fulfilling.
Like !
4.2 75cl 2016ish vintage shared at M&H B-Schöneberg post-prandial, served at pretty much room temp. - - Successfully pairs the benchmark expectations of a US-RIS (cappuccino, molasses, deep fondant, bourbon) with a sleeker body and memorable subtle (yeast-driven?) fringe pyrotechnics of an aged Belgian quad: vinous (red wine), red berries, brandy, traces of soy, allspice and spicy liquorice. Keeps engaging the palate even at room temp where it carries a noticeable nosehairtickling burn. - Will revisit in its BA renditions. - Cf. De Molen's hybrid takes on RIS and still Belgian-infused recipes.
3.9 Totalnie bez urywki malo ciala i alko wyczuwalne
4.2 750th beer rating :D !!! Stunning coffee cream flavours and a silky smoothness which betrays this beer’s strength and potency. Been waiting a long time to finally try this and I was absolutely not disappointed. Would love to pick up a bottle some day and give a more substantial rating. 100ml glass at Beaverex’18.
4.2 Keg at Beavertown Extravaganza, Printworks Surrey Quays. Black with a tan head. Full of leather, dark fruit, oak and burnt malt. Really smooth.
4.1 Oily, black body with a thick and creamy, dark tan head. Strong aroma of dark malts, dark chocolate and some coffee. Bitter taste, well roasted malts, finish with bitter dark chocolate and coffee. Very well balanced taste. Low medium body and carbonation, soft and fluffy mouthfeel.
4.2 At Craft Beer Madness by Antwerp’s Gollem, a classic in Lost Abbey’s range, glad I got a chance to taste this one. Medium thick, opening and slowly receding, pale brownish-tinged beige head on a jet black beer with hazy burgundy edge. Aroma of hot chocolate sauce, bourbon, lots of vanilla-ish wet oak wood, soy sauce, cappuccino, Worcestershire sauce, dry bark, espresso beans, hazelnut oil, black olives, wet leather. Sweetish onset with sourish note, light soy sauce-like umami edge, intense with notes of figs and olives, softish carb, thick and oily mouthfeel. Hazelnutty, toasty malt bittersweetness the way it should be in an American style imperial stout, leading to a black, beautiful ‘chocolateyness’ with roasted coffeeish accent, before being drenched in a fair dosage of sweetish, heating, boozy bourbon blending with the malts, a firm hoppy undertone and drying, expressively oaky wood tannins, long and complex. Every bit as good as I expected, Lost Abbey rarely disappoints. A classic in its specific segment.
4.2 The aroma is licorice, some coffee and a little chocolate. Pours almost black with tan head, mostly lasting and excellent lacing. The taste is a medium/light bittersweet. The body is medium, the texture creamy, the carbonation and the finish long. Very Good!!
3.9 750 ml bottle at home. Pours a nearly black red-brown with a light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt - toffee, nuts, chocolate, caramel and light burnt notes. Full body with a soft carbonation, a medium sweetness and a medium lasting bitterness. The flavor is again full of sweet roasted malt - chocolate, cocoa, coffee, nuts, prunes, some molasses, lightly burnt notes and some tobacco. Finishes with a distinct and lasting bitterness, herbal hoppy along with some burnt notes and tobacco. Overall a nice Imperial Stout with various notes of roasted malt but maybe a tad to bitter towards the finish. Aroma: 8 Appearance: 4 Taste: 8 Palate: 4 Overall: 15
4.1 Big bottle shared with a game of scythe. Pours black with some nice head around the edge of the glass. Aroma is very roasty with a complex array of aromas. Big smooth body. Flavours are very roasty, lots of dark malts and maybe a hint of smoke too. A hint of Brett? Beautiful malt complexity. Quite bitter with hints of chocolate and a lot of coffee. Finish is roasty and bitter. Lovely.
3.9 Bottle: Thick black colors with a frothy tan head. Choco-malty aroma. Burnt malt in the flavor as well as ripe berries and dark chocolate. Thick body. Yum.
4.3 Pretty amazing stout on draft at the Railroad in Linfield. The Serpent's Stout poured a thick and opaque black color, but with a relatively small, tan head. There wasn't a whole lot of lacing left around the glass, but of what there was, it was very sticky, dark and ominous. The aroma was full of alcohol, light hops, cream, licorice and cocoa. The flavors pretty much followed suit, with a warming alcohol effect in the finish.
4.1 75cl bottle at home. Very dark brown, almost black ale, creamy beige head. Roasted malty espresso, dark chocolate, leather, charcoal, some vanilla, a little red fruit, really creamy although a bit over-carbonated, medium bitter. Aftertaste lingers just shortly. Good body.
4.7 (> café-cara, ~choco, malt, ~réglisse, full-power, fin veloutée, last grain café amer, s’adoucit-affine, carbo)
