4.3Aromas of chocolate, toasted nuts, sour yeast, dark fruits, cherries, and dank earth. Dark brown with bronze highlights, and a small, fading, tan head. Sour, roasty, fruity, dry, and earthy. Medium-full body, low-moderate carbonation with a bright tingling sensation coming from the sour yeast strain(s), and finishes with roasty, earthy, funky notes. Delicious!
4.3Bottle. Been saving this review for a rainy day. Bottle compliments of my old lost abbey connect Alen. Thanks for sending this as an extra! Poured a beautiful murky sienna brown with a small to med off white head. Stood around forever and left behind some rings of lace. Aromas and flavor are dusty oak, lactic yeast, sour berries and cherries, rich malt, and funk. As it wamred in my glass it got super rich and complex, lots of dark cherry balanced out by the oaky smoothness and light carbonation. Excellent sour from Tomme.
3.9Pours unclear and quite murky brown with almost no head. The aroma brings some tart and sour yeast notes. The flavor is quite sour as well, bringing a pleasant tartness and phenolic notes as well, quite nice. The body is just right, full and bringing a puckering to the cheeks.
3.8Sour and Bitter 2012. Bottled. Pours a clear brown with a medium off-white head. Sweet with a medium tartness. Aromas of cask wood with hints of cherries and brown sugar. Medium bodied with a slightly oily mouthfeel. Soft carbonation. Long dry and sour finish. Flemmish sour hints.
3.6Bottle generously shared by ipa247. Thanks Jeff. Pours a muddy brown with no head and no lacing on the glass. The aroma is lots of brown sugar, caramel, some cherry, bourbon, and some vanilla. There is also a bit of acetic acid. The taste is sweet and tart with brown sugar, some cherry, a bit of leather, and some bourbon. The finish is tart with a bit of brown sugar. Medium-full body. Low carbonation.
3.4Bottle @ Sour & Bitter. Brown body with a small head. Aroma is tart, chocolate, mollasses. Flavor is sourish, dark fruit, spices, almond.
2.7375ml bottle pours a watery, transparent, cola brown with one ring of off white head. Nose of limes, cola, malt, orange peel. Flavor is bitter with acetic acid, lime, blood orange, not much else. Full bodied, acidic finish.
3.6Shared at a Lost Abbey sour tasting. Poured a dark cloudy red color with a small off-white head. Aroma was tart cherries with a nice funk note to it. Funky, with barrel notes that rounded this one out pretty well.
4.0Tasted on 7/2/12 from a corked and caged 375mL bottle obtained in a trade. Pours an opaque, dark cola brown with an amber tint and a thin tan head that slowly recedes to thin lace. The nose is a nice combination of brown sugar, caramel, dark bread, and a lactic sour lemon peel note. The flavor is much more sour with the lemon and acidity dominating, and the darker malt flavors more in the background. The body is medium with sticky tannins, just lighter than average carbonation and a long, super sour and malty dark chocolate finish.
3.8Bottle from a trade with cbkschubert. Cork comes out with a faint pop. Pours hazy reddish brown color with minimal tan head. Sour cherry, wood and acetic aromas. Very sour. Tart cherry flavor with some oak. Medium body with almost no carbonation. Quite acedic. Thanks Craig.
3.5Bottle shared by CaptainCougar. Thanks! Pours a dark hazy brown color with a thin tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of tart cherries, citrus and earthy notes. The taste is tart cherries, dark malts, earthy notes. Medium bodied.
2.9Big thanks to Captain Cougar. Lots of acetic, balsamic vinegar, molasses, candied apple, and prune. One-dimensional, and that one isn’t very good.
2.9Hazy chocolate brown pour with little head. Aroma of soy sauce and spoiled grapes. Flavor is a bitter. Sour and slightly fruity. Notes of cherry and grape. Tart finish. Very dry. Not bad.
2.4Bile and vinegar, toffee, dark fruit and oxidized malts, light cherry. Not enjoyable.
2.9Muddled brown pour with no head. Caramel toffee and acetic acid lead to balsamic vinegar and borderline butter notes. Thick palate with high acidity ugh.
4.0From bottle at Sour & Bitter 2012. It pours very dark brown, with a decent beige head. The nose is roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, funk, toffee, dark fruit, balsamic vinegar, almond, toasted coconut and vanilla. The taste is lemon, grapefruit, Granny Smith apple, dark fruit, moderate acidity, some underlying roasted malt and charcoal flavours and balsamic vinegar. Medium body and fine, prickly carbonation. Very well balanced. This is not usually my favourite sour style, but this one was great!
3.6Bottle sample at Sour&Bitter Copenhagen 2012. Bottle looks awesome. Beer in the glass very dark, almost black, small head. Sour-fruity aroma, like plum. Starts mild sour, fruity-dry, but then more and more dry, also more sour. Dusty-dry. Nevertheless quite well balanced. Sourish finish. Good!
4.0Bottle at Sour & Bitter. Pours brown with a creamy tan head. The aroma is chocolate, dark ripe fruits and light acid. The flavour is lots of dark fruit, acid, oak and raisins. Nice one!
3.9Pours brown with a tiny beige head. Aroma is balsamic, sweet oak, flemish, dark nuances like figs, ripe grapes and olives. weak lacto acid and some sweeter notes behind. Taste is pretty flemish, lots of balsamic, dark oak, salt water, grapefruit, black olives, ripe grapes, red wine, brett, lacto acid, vinegar leading to a dry spicy end.
4.3Sour & Bitter Festival CPH 2012. Dark brown with a small off-white head. Funky aroma along with dark dried fruit and chocolate and a vineous touch of alcohol. Chocolate and dark fruit flavour. Very tart with a hint of vinegar.
4.0Bottled. BRown coloured. LIght brown head. Sourness, tart, berries, vinegar, oak in the aroma. Flavour of Tart, oak, wood, berries, sourness, barnyard, brett. Medium to full bodied. Ends quite sour, notes of berries and tart. Nice.
Past its prime.
4.3On tap at S&B. This ale is drinking fantastic now. Clear reddish brown pour with a small white head. Vinegar and sour aromas. Sour cherries, vinegar, oak, a bit of caramel malt. It actually taste very much like a sour bruin. Simply delicious......
3.8Bottle @ sour bitter. Pours murky reddish brown. Aroma: syrupy, brown sugar, herbal, cherry stone, faint liquorice, sweet vinegar, dusty, brett, almost like a muted oude bruin, dusty, tea, sweet tobacco, butterscotch, Taste: low carbonation, tart, nice acidity, lemon, earthy, Brett, sour green apples, sweet vinegar, very dry, woody, sweet lemon, funk, brett, lemon peel, somm fruity bitterness, sour cherries,
4.0Bottle @ S&B. Dark brown pour, small head. Aroma is awesome! A blend of tobacco, chrerries, chocolate, oak barrel, some caramel, a bit of brett presence, slightly lactic. Taste is fairly brett forward, barnyard, some lactic sourness, sour cherries, not much sweetness aside from a hint of caramel and cherry. Slightly thin carbonation and body. But a good fucken beer anywhore.
3.3bottle... muddy dark brown with medium carbonation... reminds me of a slightly oakier lactic oud brown, pretty solid
4.0Bottle:   Deep muddy brown, sediment settles, moderate ligth beige head, frothy, few tags of lacing.   Oaken nose, bretty, cherry pits and sweet vinegar round it out.   Tart on the tongue, no, make that sour.   A little acidic, otherwise sweet vinegar, unripened dark cherries, and oak.   Tastes pretty damn good!   Backside isn’t as sour, fairly tart tho, lingers with a sweet vinegar asepct.   Well put together, held up very well over the years.   Not terribly dry, tends to coat the tongue fairly well.   Very smooth.   This is one tasty treat!   Recommended!
4.4Bottle split with pat. Pours a deep coffee brownbody with thin off white carbonated lacing. Aroma is pretty interesting - sour fruit and chestnuts first with some cinnamon and brown sugar in the background. Mouthfeel is tart with light fruit, nuts, cinnamon, and oak.
4.5Bottle. 12.7 oz. Split with James for Mount Eerie Sout Fest 2011. Pours a deep, muddy maroon amber with a thin, wispy, tightly bubbled kahki head. Aroma of dark cherries, musty oak, balsamic vinegar, funky yeast and soft earthiness, and some sublte chocolate notes in the back. The mouthfeel is velvety and and loose, full of chestnut, cherry, and oaky flavors and lovely sourness rounds out the finish. Complex and nuanced, this sour is a tad like a smoother, less tart, slightly easier-going Cuvee de Tomme. The chestnut flavors, along with the musty, earthy notes in the finish, lend a hand in bringing together this tremendous sour ale.
4.3I cracked at home this after having a few IPAs at work (90 minute, 21A Brew Free or Die and a Racer 5). I was expecting sour but this made me say "hooo this is SOUR". So it’s cleansing my palate of the IPAs in a big way. There’s a lot going on in this ale. Let me take a breath and lick my teeth again. Ok - so there’s a lot going on in this ale. Lots of dark, little fruits (cherries, currents, cranberries) with a strong backing of oak and a little caramel. Very dry, very tasty. If you’re a fan of sours, this will definitely make your day.
