3.9 poured into a st bernardus chalice... dark copper color with decent head and lacing... very sweet boozy smell. finishes very smooth
3.2 The adventure through Belgian beers continues and this one is pretty plain. Strong dark fruit notes and a thin finish offers a pretty average experience in this bomber. Worthy try for the adventurous.
3.6 Great beer. Brown coloured and hazy. Has an off-white head, medium duration. Aroma: Yeasty, faint nutty, faint soy-sauce and alcohol. Good flavor, sweet start, harmonic yeasty notes, different kind of bread, warming alcohol. Nice.
3.6 light caramel, nuts, light nuts, brown, off white foam, light sweetness, lightly bitter, medium body, creamy, soft carbonation, light nice bitter finish.
3.0 Bomber bottle. Pours a dark brown with small beige head that quickly diminishes to nothing. The aroma is apricot, citrus, and caramel. Medium mouthfeel with a dry fruit and licorice. Alcohol present but not too overpowering, a good quad from De Proef.
2.7 This bomber totally missed the mark for me. Thin. vapid, uninteresting. For reasons of national security, I will not discuss this issue any further you dumb bastards.
4.5 The legend of the cow smuggler Aroma of caramel, very malty brown light lacing minimal head taste: raisins , figs, strong malt
3.2 Bottle at Brick Store Pub. Dark brown colored beer with only a small head. Lot of port and madeira. Also caramel and burned malts. The label didn’t reveil any information regarding bottle date etc. but I think this bottle was already some years old.
3.6 Bottle. Dark brown colour with a small beige head. Aroma and flavour of spice, fruit, alcohol, caramel, licorice and malt.
3.0 A: Poured a cola color with lower carbonation than I expected. Left a small white cap, minimal lacing and some white bubbles S: I get cola, caramel with some caramelized sugar, toffee and some dark fruits on the nose T: Taste has an immediate caramel, light candy sugar with some dark fruits, toffee, more caramel and cola midway to finish with some underlying booze. The taste falls flat on the end leaving only a sweetness with booze and sticky flat and bitter taste. M: Rather thin, plain and medium bodied. Not what I was wanting nor expecting O: Average
3.1 Pretty dark amber with a foamy lacing head. The aroma is booze with a bit of malt, very strong on the booze. The flavor has a nice bit of malt but also a large dose of hops, more than you would expect. The alcohol has a nice burn and the hops give it a bitter finish. The strong alcohol aroma lowered the score for me.
3.5 deep brown pour with no head. nose is huge dried fruits, apricots, oranges, lightly sweet, rich malts, caramel, licorice, and sticky. thick on the palate, flavor is alcohol, caramel, licorice, dried fruits, heavy malt finish, and a slight burn.
3.2 750ml bottle, probably 1-2 years old. I figure a 10% Abt style should be able to take that no problem. Sweet, malty aroma, estery and full of dark fruit, toffee and black bread, along with hints of raisin, dough and a touch of alcohol in the background. Dark brown in color with deep amber highlights and a very fine, rapidly fading head. Flavor profile is really quite sweet, particularly as the beer warms, showing plenty of caramel and toffee character, amidst lighter notes of dried fruit, peppery alcohol and a touch of chocolate at the finish. Smooth and warming on the palate, very low in effervescence, body is of course very full, as befits the style. Not a lot of complexity here, certainly not disagreeable as a winter warmer but not much else.
3.7 Sweeter than your typical abt brew but without all the sugars taking over the malts. Not bad.
4.1 The pour is medium amber with some head. The clarity is pretty good. There is an unusual nutty aroma blended in with the malts. The body was smooth and creamy on more on the bolder side. Up front the taste is incredibly sweet but on the back end there is more of a sour, dry finish. A nice beer.
3.8 courtesy of fiulijn - cloudy dark brown beer with a little foam left; fairly toasted aroma with notes of nuts and marzipan; hints of prunes; full-bodied; some sweetness and a fair bitterness; pretty highly carbonated; the finish is quite dry with a solid lingering bitterness and long nutty, biscuity and dark fruity notes: some alcohol presence
2.0 Bottle @ home. Hazy brown appearance with a light brown head. Strong candy sugar, somewhat boozy, brown sugar, belgian ale nose. Very candy sugary, dark belgian, boozy flavor. Strong, sugary, boozy finish. I really can’t stand this one.
3.5 750, corked and baled. Pours a murky dark brown with a short-lived dense and creamy tan head. Big fruity malty nose, lots of dark tree fruit and brown bread and black bread. Creamy medium body with lively carb. Bready, fruity mid-palate, though the flavors could be more complex and distinct. Mild fruity bready finish. Decent beer.
4.0 Bottle purchased in 2007 from Coaltrain in CO Springs, CO and forgotten in a basement for several years. A wonderful creamy brown head a good in thick in my scalds glass. There’s a dominant yeast aroma with hints of dust and spices it warms, a honey sweetness emerges. The body is very sweet with a spice mead flavor. I’ve never had a beer quite like this. I’ll have to try and find a young bottle, but age treats this beer well.
3.3 Slightly elder version (+1y) Darker brown coloured, large brown head and medium carbonation. Madeira malty balanced aroma. Full creamy palate. Finish is light malty sweet bitter touched with some clear alcoholic hints. Nice brew.
3.0 Murky brown color/ tan head. Toffee, caramel, molasses, sweet spicy aromas. Medium bodied. Sweet candi sugar, brown sugar flavors with belgian spicy yeast, molasses--ok.
3.5 750 ml bottle. Boozy! Slightly hazy medium amber, short-lived golden head, no lace. Boozy aroma, sweet like rye or dark rum, lightly spicy. Flavor is very boozy as well, with sweet rummy toffee, cooked peaches, and a subtle licorice not in the finish. Lots of alcohol heat in the swallow. Too boozy and sweet for me.
3.9 From notes: Pours a very dark brown color with slight plum hues when held to a light source and a thick two finger frothy yellowish tan head. Decent retention, only slowly fading into a lasting cap that leaves sporadic spots of lacing behind. Chocolate malty aroma with hints of peppery spice, candy sugar and dark fruit. Hints of plum, raisin, fig and dark cherry. Soft carbonation up front with lots of roasty chocolate maltiness, sweet cany sugar, plum, raisin, date, fig, cherry and grape. Well balanced with rostiness from the malt, sweetness from the fruit, spice and alcohol warmth in the finish. Slightly sour aftertaste.
3.9 Bottle: pours a dirty, blackish brown. dense and opaque. thin tan persistent ring. Nose- brown sugar, cereal, bread, barnyard funk, molasses, dark fermented fruits/prunes Taste- subtle sweetness, then earthy. some spiciness on the finish, really complex and nuanced Palate- silky smooth and rich Finish- smooth and then a bit of kick Opens up as it warms. Another masterpiece from the Professor
3.9 Appearance: deep burnt amber and polished mahogany. Pours thick and substantial in girth. Small khaki head gives way to a bubbly collar and thin film. Swirls with lace. Nose: sweet. Brown sugars melted and caramelized. Prunes, dates, dark chocolate and heavy cakes. Essence of liquid bread. Black root. Black strap molasses. Melted milk chocolates weave their way in and out. Palate: wow. Bready, chewy, and supremely substantial in girth as promised. Dark breads laden with black strap molasses, black cherries, prunes, and dates. Meaty. Slowly coats the mouth. Apples comingle with the black cherries while their skins are bright atop my tongue. Teeth tingle just a tad under the richness inherent in dark cakey breads. Brown sugar is more subtle, lurking underneath and in the breath along with nutmeg. Melted chocolates minus the sugar ooze as her temperature rises for some chocolate brownies and chocolate cake. Quaff and remix, each sup discovers a different menagerie of flavors, all different and yet all the same. Final Thoughts: a brew to ponder if I ever did come across one. Chew, rich, meaty, bready, and resplendent in dark fruits with a dash of spice, liquid bread if I ever did taste some. It’s easy to imagine monks and such living off beers like this during lent, their very real liquid bread.
3.7 Slightly hazy readish brown beer, with a thin beige head. Sweet aroma, with notes of malt, hops, fruits and a hint of caramel in the end. The taste follows the aroma well, with notes of malt, apricots, raisins and yeast. Really good and well balanced.
3.6 Bottle. Pours a hazy brown color with a small off-white head. Has a sweetish malty dark fruit aroma with some hints of caramel. Has a sweetish malty spicy dark fruit flavor with some caramel hints. Has a warming malty dark fruit finish.
3.9 Bottle, dark muddy borwn color with creamy silk head, nutty caramel aroma, flavor is malty, brown sugar, apricots, macadamia nuts, finish is well balanced with a little heat
3.8 (Sample Date: 6/11/2010 Source:Other) Big malty dark sugar notes. Caramelized sugars and spicy yeast notes. Almost black with tan head. Flavor follows aroma. Sweet finish with peppery residual. Quite good.
