Mackeson Stout

Mackeson Stout

Available filtered and pasteurised in cans. Previously 3.0%.

Originally brewed by Mackeson of Hythe in Kent in 1910. This was the first beer to use milk sugar to produce a Milk Stout. The Mackeson brewery was eventually acquired by Whitbread, which in turn was taken over by Interbrew (now AB InBev) who initially produced the beer at their Magor brewery in Wales. Subsequently has been contract brewed by Youngs and latterly by Hydes.

3.2 Can. Black with no head. Really nice malty aroma. Smooth sweet flavor with an undertone of coffee. Full bodied.
3.3 330ml can. Pours clear, very dark brown. Latte-colored head. Lots of sweet malt aroma. Surprisingly much body. Surprisingly short finish. Medium sweet. Not outstanding, but inoffensive and could be a lot worse at this price point.
2.4 Can from a supermarket. Black colour with an off white head. Light fruit and toasted aroma and taste thin body. And a bit watery.
3.0 Black color with a fine tan head. Mild dark roasted barley and a bit sweet chocolate aroma. Light coffee, mild roasted and medium chocolate flavor, Round and mild stout. My breakfast stout in Liverpool :-) Usually at The Globe.
3.1 330ml can from Beers of Europe - Always been intrigued by Mackeson, always came across as an old woman’s drink, so in the interest of science... Thin black with a brown head. Smell is yeasty, taste is quite light and chocolatey. It’s nice enough. Very drinkable. Bit watery mind you...
3.2 Can - very dark red with a sizeable foamy brown head. Aroma of cream, a little brown sugar, hints of cocoa and porridge. Taste of gentle roasted malts, cocoa, cream and light bitterness in the finish. Dry, medium body, creamy mouthfeel and light carbonation.
3.4 Can 33cl. Light brown sticky medium head. Very dark color. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, licorice, malt, syrup. Dry sweet taste of licorice, malt, coffee.
3.1 Bottle. Black with brown head. Aroma roasted, some nuts, candies. Taste roasted, candies, quite sweet. Empty body.
2.3 Plechovka. Čierna farba, hnedá pena, hneď spadla. Vôňa sladká, kakaová. V chuti prázdne telo, chuť teplého kakaa, sladkosť. Dochuť ... skoro žiadna.
3.3 Can from Seoul Plaza. Very dark colour, beige head. Dry roasty simple stout, similar to continental draught Guinness. Actually quite palatable, easy drinking.
3.0 Can, kindly shared by Gurthnar, many thanks. Dark brown color with medium beige head. Caramel, malt in aroma. Sweet caramel malt, light coffee in taste.
2.9 From notes. Bottle at the Heineken brewery in St. Lucia. It’s a long story. Dark brown color, huge tan head that settles quickly. Aroma of milk chocolate, nuts, light ash. Taste is sweet cocoa. Light body. Very drinkable.
3.0 Can sample at a tasting at Max’s place. Thanks Tom L. Black with a brown ring. Coffee and milk chocolate aroma, thin, mild bitterness and diluted coffee taste. Light body, soft fizz and a long stale coffee finish.
2.5 Bottle sample at a tasting at Max’s place. Thanks Tom L. Black with a tan head. Aroma of roast, stale coffee with milk, and a bit of cardboard. Sweet flavor with stale coffee with milk, and a roasty finish. Light-bodied.
3.5 Aroma of roasted malt, burnt veg. Pours pitch black with thin tan head. Slight lacing. Mouthfeel is on the thin side, clean and smooth, near to flat. Mildly bitter roast malt flavour with weak sweet/creamy coffee notes. Lightly sweet, mildly dry, roast malt finish.
3.3 330ml can into glass. Pours pitch black with large coffee coloured head. Smells like milk chocolate and coffee. Tastes like iced coffee. Mouthfeel is medium and milky. With your eyes closed this IS iced coffee. Nice but weird.
3.3 Pours mahogany with quickly disappearing head that leaves some nice lacing only 2.8 abv by t doesn’t taste watery more hoppy milk with liquorice and chocolate notes CV would pass for a mild or oiastmeal stout.
3.1 Can from Morrisons. Pours mahogany with a tan head. The taste is slightly sharp and tinny, but with some reasonable roasty flavours of coffee and liquorice. It’s pretty thin as expected, but this is actually pretty good for the ABV.
3.5 Can from Co-op, Wrekenton, Gateshead. A black beer with a thin white head. It has a rich milk chocolate flavour, vanilla and oak notes with a creamy chocolate milkshake finish. Very nice for such a low ABV beer.
3.0 Appearance is opaque, brown tinges at the base. A one finger beige foamy head. Aroma- caramel, sweetness, milky, chocolate, cocoa. Taste- dry roast, chocolatey, milky, some sweetness with hints of caramel, but it actually becomes bitter at the end. A bit fuller in the mouth than expected, given the low abv. Perfectly drinkable and pleasant.
2.8 Meh. Takes what I liked about the XXX and dumbs it down, and unfortunately still has the thin palate. I’ll pass on this one.
2.8 Can into a Hoegaarden glass. This is a perfectly drinkable milk stout, but not likely to get rave reviews. It wears is chocolate and lactose colours on its sleeve, and while its a good balance it does taste a little lacking.
3.6 Got some cans from the local co-op in Cowes. Easily drinkable with aromas of chocolate, coffee and spruce. Light abv with high drinkability and full body. Was surprised by the quality of that piwo. Thumbs up.
2.2 Four-pack bought at local co-op in Cowes. Pours out in a deep black colour with low smooth head and medium body. Aroma of torf and milk. Taste of torf, woods, milky coffee and malt. Roasted dry finish. Not my kind of beer.
3.1 Can from Beers of Europe. Pours dark brown, long-lasting tan head. Aromas of light cooked cherries, dark sugar. Taste is light sweet. Decent body for the strength. Drops off at the end, but decent enough.
3.0 33cl can thanks to allmyvinyl. Appearance - opaque black with a lovely crema head. Nose - fruit cake and molasses. Some black jack sweets. Taste - dried raisins, brown sugar and coca cola. Palate - light to medium bodied but then too sweet throughout. Overall - yeah, better than I expected but the sweetness gives the impression of a sickly soft drink. Have to say it’s good for the low alcohol though.
3.3 Can 330 ml at home, into a snifter. ABV only 2.8%! Pours a very dark beer, alnost totally black. One finger of dark brown head, with average retention, leaving light lacing on the glass and some foam on the beer’s surface. Aroma of coffee, hints of chocolate and light roasted malts. Subtle but smells good nevertheless. Taste also of coffee, some roasted malts on the finish and on the aftertaste with just a touch of bitterness there, but mostly sweet. Thin body, okay carbonation. Overall quite good taking its low ABV into account, could be an everyday dark beer, certainly better than drinking a macro lager.
3.4 Can from BeersofEurope, Review for thebeerguy. This was the second time I had this beer, the first in a pub in Tutbury, Derbyshire. Expect a real creamy beer, with peaty, smoky wood notes, and light malts. Very smooth, with a strong smoky finish.
3.1 2.8%! 2.8%! I can’t remember the last time I had something this weak but I bet I didn’t enjoy it as much as this. Sat in some working mens club in Stockport, drinking my way through the bar and realised there was a rate. Black with a pale tan medium head after an aggressive pour. Roasted malts, some sweet milky chocolate, coffee and chocolate grow as it goes on a bit. I was very drunk but I enjoyed this.
2.9 Can. Nose is roast, slight smoke, toast. Taste is smoke, sugars slight lactose leading to coffee and a little caramel. Mouthfeel is thin. It’s a northern classic and in the dark days of beers in the 90s it was a reliable favorite, but is ultimately quite ordinary. .
