Mackeson XXX Stout

Mackeson XXX Stout

Editor’s Note: This is a higher alcohol version of the British Mackeson Stout. Formerly brewed in the United States by Boston Beer Co. at their Cincinnati location (the old Hudepohl brewery). Presently brewed at the Carib Brewery in Trinidad (and St. Kitts).

This is the version that is commonly exported to South East Asia

Like every other hard-worker that you know, you consider Friday to be the best day of the week because at the end of it is a reward for five days of traffic, deadlines and trying to exceed your bosses’ expectations. Besides looking forward to two days without an alarm, an after-work ‘lime’ is when you permit yourself to indulge in something you’ve had a hankering for all week – It’s dark, on the brink of sweetness and one is definitely not enough. With a designated driver on duty, you place your first order for a Mackeson. It’s the perfect warm-up for everything that the rest of the night has to offer. It never disappoints and ensures that you don’t either.

This instantly satisfying, full-bodied milk stout is perfect for a generation that thrives on immediate and long-lasting gratification in their personal, professional and pleasurable pursuits. Its roasted malt aroma is a superb opener for its dark, creamy, semi-sweet goodness that finishes with a hint of a coffee-like flavour.

3.5 Poured from 275mL bottle. Black with tan head. Mild roast and cocoa with a touch of milk chocolate and syrup to round it out. Medium body.
4.7 Mackeson XXX has a thick, tan head, a dark brown appearance, and moderate glass lacing. The aroma is of cream, cocoa, roasted malt, and brown bread crust. The flavor is similar, with sweetness, as well. Mouthfeel is medium and silky, and Mackeson XXX finishes midway sweet/dry. RJT
3.0 Piękny ciemny, nieprzejrzysty kolor z mocną brązową pianą pozostawiającą ładne ślady na szkle. Aromat palonej kawy. W smaku słodkie, czuć laktozę, trochę kawy palonej. Łagodne na podniebieniu. Za słodkie.
3.5 12 oz bottle from Abe's on Jost Van Dyke. Black appearance with a light brown head. Aroma of bread, chocolate malt, mild coffee and light sugary notes. Similar flavor, adding moderate sweetness and a touch of bitterness. Light to medium body with a creamy feel and a smooth finish. Good.
3.6 275ml bottle from Epicurean Supermarket in Antigua on vacation. Pours an opaque black with a small, creamy, long lasting, brown head that laces nicely. Sweet aroma of roasted malt, caramel, dark chocolate and coffee. Sweet flavour of roasted malt, caramel, dark chocolate, raisin, brown sugar and lactose with a slightly bitter coffee finish. Medium body with an oily texture and soft carbonation. By far the best Caribbean beer I’ve had on this trip.
3.1 275 ml bottle. Pours a dark chestnut brown with a dense tan colored head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, caramel, toffee, molasses and rum. Light body with a medium sweetness and hardly any bitterness. Flavor of sweet, roasted malt, brown sugar, caramel, lactose, heavily sweetened coffee, spiced rum. Finishes lightly roasted with hints of cardboard, some residual sweetness and lightly roasted. Overall too sweet and thus not very complex but OK. Aroma: 7 Appearance: 4 Taste: 6 Palate: 3 Overall: 11
2.9 Bottle from supermarket in Caye Caulker, Belize. Black color, off white head. Roasted malts, some coffee, grain.
3.5 On tap. Black in color with small beige head. Subtle aroma of cocoa. Sweet chocolaty flavor. Medium bodied. Good.
3.1 Many lagers tried on this West Indies trip, pleased to find a stout to try also. I got this dark bottle at a nice shop in Antigua. What’s the deal on these 275 ml bottles, not even the 330 ml they have in Europe much less the 12 oz servings from the states. I have to rough it with no proper glass to drink from. The smell is a light chocolate. A full drink now, again the light chocolate, bread and an entertaining sweetness at the finish. Flavorful but I prefer the depth of an imperial stout. Not exactly my thing but decent.
4.0 Really good and surprisIng for such low alcohol. Roasted to the core with a dark and thick body. Truly pleasant.
3.2 Pours black with a thick brown head. Aroma is chocolate and liquorice. Taste is quite sweet and follows the nose with chocolate and liquorice and also coffee and a little burnt malt and hops. Full bodied with moderate carbonation. A little too sweet but it balances the burnt notes.
2.5 Found this beer to be a little to sweet. The first one went down nice, the more you drank the more you were able to notice the sweetness in the beer. I would not say don't try it but keep in mind the after about 2 it starts to jump out at you.
3.9 This is a heavy "A" drink, straight out of the bucket into the the bread box, no compromises. Its velvety sweetness brings life back to the funeral. The aroma alone turns wilted hibiscus into erect typha plant, puts hair on ya grandmama’s chest, builds the pyramids. Yes, the three big ones at Giza. Walks, hell, runs on the moon. Wow, I need to sit down for a sec.
3.7 Pours black with a frothy tan head. Nose is bready with notes of chocolate and a hint of anise. Taste is sweet and follows the nose. Like a creamy chocolate shake. Hint of hop comes through in the aftertaste. Mild and tasty brew.
3.5 From old tasting notes. Blackish brown color with a huge foamy brown head. Sweet roasted malt aroma like molasses. Sweet roasted malt palate, chocolaty and rich. Very lightly carbonated. Scant little hops. Smooth with a decent firm body. Sweet malty finish and aftertaste. Quite good.
3.1 12oz bottle, pours deep, almost black mahogany, tilted glass reveals deep dark red against an illuminated background. Creamy, sweet, cherry soda, barley wine, burgundy wine, licorice, chocolate, complex. Nice gift from Barn of Truck Stop Aliens.
3.9 330ml Flasche. Klar und schwarz mit kleiner Schaumkrone. Angenehme Röstaromen. Bisschen Kaffee. Spritzig. Intensiver Geschmack. Runder Abgang.
4.0 Black with a brown head. Aroma is lactose and dark fruit. Taste is lactose and roasted malts. Has a sweet aftertaste.
3.8 2015 BJCP Category: 16A Sweet Stout AROMA: General sweet aroma; some diacetyl. Not very pungent 7/12 APPEARANCE: Black virtually opaque body. Very large, dark tan frothy head. Excellent retention. 3/3 FLAVOR: Akin to chocolate-flavored cola. Sweet dairy flavor consistent in the background. Some diacetyl on the finish, but not distracting - offers a slight butterscotch or creme brulee taste. Hops seem to have faded. Roasty flavor in the aftertaste. Enjoyable, though a fresh serving might be excellent. 16/20 MOUTHFEEL: Medium+ body; smooth, creamy texture. Slight tinny sensation on the finish. 4/5 OVERALL IMPRESSION: Considering the brewery, the style and the fact this is probably an old bottle makes this an impressive beer. 8/10 TOTAL SCORE: 38/50 DISCLAIMER: The author is not a certified BJCP judge; therefore, this score sheet is not necessarily indicative of proper BJCP judging techniques and protocol. 3.3 Taste: semi sweet, creamy, lactose, malty. Nose had a toasted milk aroma. Black, mostly opaque, with a fine head and some lace. Full almost syrupy body.
3.5 Pours jet black with a thin light brown head. Aroma has notes of nuts, roasted malts, and sweet mash. Tasting notes include nuts, chocolate, coffee, and sweet malts. Finish is sweet, and slick.
3.2 Bottle enjoyed on the beach at Pigeon Point, Tobago. Very dark brown colour with a tan head. Aroma of chocolate and roasted malt. Mild bitterness, fairly heavy on sweetness. Medium body, slick texture. Quite decent.
3.3 Stout. あまい、濃いめの深き味
3.7 F: huge, pale brownish, lasting. C: black, non-transparent. A: nice caramel and roasted malt, brown sugar, molasses, lactic tones, milk chocolate. T: very smooth mouth feel, caramel sweetness, roasted malt, molasses, coffee, /espresso, liquorice, plums, milky sweetness, with some nice bitterness on the palate, medium body, average carbonated, 0,33l bottle from supermarket in Guadeloupe.
3.6 I was surprised to find this off the cruise docks at St. Marten. It had aromas of chocoalte, coffee, and roasted malts. The flavors were similar with a sweet taste taking the initial flavors and a slight bitter palate at the end. It was very smooth and easy drinking.
2.9 330 ml bottle. Pours opaque with a thick uneven mocha head. Aromas are molasses and black licorice. Tastes are an odd mix of molasses, toasty malts, and acidity. Thick and oily texture, strong carbonation, long acidic finish. The lactose based acidity did not work for me. ---Rated via Beer Buddy
3.7 Black color. Thin , beige head. Aroma of sweet molasses, caramel and coffee. Sweet , caramel taste with moderate, roasted bitterness at the end. Usually I don't like such a sweet brews , but this one was very smooth and drinkable. .
3.3 Originally rated on 4/11/08- The body was blacker than black, the head was light brown and creamy, lacing on the glass was about average for this type of thick beer. brewed with lactose sugar the sweetness balanced out with the bitterness of malts. hints of roasted chocolate malts flavor this triple stout. overall this is a decent stout, not something i would drink often, but every now and then it is a good for a change of pace.
