MacTarnahan's Oak-Aged IPA

MacTarnahan's Oak-Aged IPA

Editor's Note: Formerly Woodstock IPA, now known as Oak-Aged IPA. Woodstock IPA is an authentic wood-conditioned India Pale Ale with the distinctive flavor of the British Empire’s original. Traditional IPAs were distinguished by rich hops, which were generously added to preserve the beer during its long overseas voyage between England and India. They were also characterized by striking oak flavor, as the beer made its journey in wooden barrels. Woodstock IPA matures in oak and is dry-hopped during the aging process to bring you the classic style.

3.2 Nice flowery, citrus, aroma, some malts, vanilla. Amber pour, small off-white head. Good flavor, citrusy, nice sweet finish. Ends a little dry. Pretty good, although I was expecting more when I saw an oak-aged IPA.
3.6 From the bottle for rating #365. I have to confess to being a bit surprised at how good this one was. It’s not great, but it’s very drinkable and has a number of nice features. The beer pours clear rich amber with an ample head; the aroma is dusty, grassy hops with some hints of orange peel. The flavor offers a surprising degree of complexity: a nice dry toned-back, almost British-style grassy hoppiness, plenty of pepper, hints of barleywine-like booziness, a bit of vanilla. I expected to be disappointed. I definitely wasn’t.
3.7 12oz squat bottle. Clear and copper colored. Spotty white head. Sweet caramel malt nose. Spicy, piney hop aroma. Citrus aromatic notes as well. Full and lively. Good caramel malt character. Effervescent and tingling. Nice vanilla oak note. Hop character is resinous and citrus. Dry finish. Long and sticky. Quality brew. Woody and zesty!
3.0 Pours a clear rusty orange with a creamy off white head. I’m not sure how old this bastard is, but it seems to have more of a barley wine feel to it. The aroma is full of caramelized sugar, rasins, and oats. The flavor hold a decent element of pine with some citrus, but they are perfectly balanced with the sweet caramel malt and rasin presense. Very malty over the tounge for a beer that’s supposed to a bit lighter and more carbonated. It says it’s been "oak-aged", though I didn’t notice much of a barrel aged element to it besides the fact that it migh have taken the punch out of the hops. A pretty good brew, but a weak example of the style.
3.1 Looks orange, tastes orange, Underrated beer. I like the balance between the citrus-pine hops and the very subtle malt tendencies at the end. It obviously is not scoring well here, and the only reason I can find is that it has no balls. I mean, West Coast IPAs should be ballsy. This one is merely tasty. Smooth, drinkable...just not too memorable.
3.4 Pours clear copper with an off-white head that does some nice lacing. The aroma is quite balance - the hops are citrusy and piney with a creaminess from the malt. It is a medium / full bodied beer with mild carbonation. There is a combonation of malt and hops on the initial taste, but the finish is very piney and woody. It is an okay IPA.
2.8 Pours an orange amber color. Small white head. This beer is more malty than hoppy, and its rather astringent. Not too pleasant on the palate. The flavor is kinda fruity with some oak but it’s not very good. Tastes old. Could be an old bottle. In the end its not recommendable or enjoyable.
3.7 This beer is in a category of its own. Pours amber with a white head. Aroma is sweet with some hops. The taste is mellowed by the barrel aging, leaving the hop taste without the bite. Good oak taste without the rotten-barrel aftertaste.
3.6 Bottle is so well labeled that I add an appearnce point. On to the contents...Clearly an English-style IPA,with less hops in the nose, but great hop balanceone the tongue. The oak doesn’timpart the usual vanilla flavor, but rather a pure woodiness that adds character and dryness.
3.1 Bottle. Pours a golden amber with a decent white head. Nose is floral and malty. Flavors of hops and wood on the palate. Very interesting, almost a sherried IPA flavor. Somewhat sweet, but just short of getting it really right. Still enjoyed. A gift from Beervana.
3.7 Pours a nice deep amber color. Aromas of hops/hops/citrus and maybe a touch of something woodsy. Strong hop flavors with malts and a nice dry finish. I was expecting a more pronounced oak or wood like flavor, but it seemed you really had to talk yourself in to believing it was there. Great beer none the less.
3.0 I must say I expected more from this one. The aroma and the initial flavor are pretty good with nice hop and oak flavors. The problem is that there is no depth or finish with this beer, I would like to have more fruity malt flavors and a solid finish that leaves an enjoyable taste in my mouth.
4.0 (02.22.06) 12 oz brown bottle purchased from DiCarlo’s, Mundelein, IL. 6% ABV. Pours orange amber with small white head and no discernable carbonation. Nose of fruity esters and sweet malt. Medium bodied ale that starts with light malt sweetness and fruity/toffee/oak wood/ toasted malt/hop flavors. Finishes dry with light malt fade and lingering bitterness. Some lingering wood flavor. Well balanced malt and hop. This is a tasty IPA.
3.6 Pour was orange-amber. Fast rising and fast settling head. Nose was sour and woody. interesting. Taste was right on for an IPA, and traces of earth and wood. Good warming for the %6. Nice brew here folks, try this one. Thanks for the trade, I cannot remember from whom?
3.5 A pretty good IPA. Definitely hoppy but not over the top. Nice orangey color and hoppy aroma.
3.4 drank this one a few nights ago and was just too lazy at the time to write it up. poured an orangey amber with a fast fading head. a nice citrus aroma but for an IPA the flavors seemed to be very balanced, not very hoppy. easy drinking though. thanks to Fordest for the bottle.
2.0 "Assertively hopped" says the neck label, and that’s almost all of the flavor to be found. Ever been on a brewery tour where they let you taste pelletized hops? Same flavor in this bottle; there’s more to beer than that.
2.8 Pours slightly cloudy medium golden with normal to above average carbonation. Aroma barely noticeable with just a hint of coffee. Hard to belive it’s 45 IBU as the flavor is not too bitter and finishes rather sweet. Probably would not buy again considering all the other great IPAs around here. Forgot to mention: the oak flavor is noticeable, imparting a whisky like flavor.
3.3 This brew is attractive. Very clear for an IPA with a nice head. The aroma is terrific. Unfortunately, it’s not as ’hoppy’ as an IPA should be (in my opinion). Overall, it’s pretty good, but not one of the best.
3.3 Beautiful copper color. Very nice hoppy aroma, resinous, caramel. Medium body, dry caramel, correct hopping, not enough malt, some metallic touch. Not impressive hopping.
3.0 orangish amber body....aroma is woody and of grapefruit hops; flavor is quite the same, but is very light in malts; and although it is woody in nature, it is lacking the oak bacbone i was expecting....average palate; not bad, but nothing id care to go after again
3.2 Slightly hazy amber colour. Dusty, sweaty hop notes with a background of subtle wood. Toasty, dusty, woody flavour. Mild bitterness. Even-handed flavour. Hints of vanilla and herbs (sage, mint) round off an indistinct maltiness. Fairly sweet interpretation but with some unique flavours.
3.6 12 oz. bottle labelled oak aged IPA. The beer pours to a dense creamy bubbly white head atop a clear orangish body. The aroma is smooth and hoppy. Nice orange citrus and earthy hops and sweet malts. The flavor is an IPA with light oranges, oaky backbone, and sweet malts. I don’t think this is too bad. Nice balanced flavor. The palate is medium bodied and lightly oily and just on the verge of being bitter. I could drink a lot of this beer.
3.2 12oz. bottle. Translucent orange with a small white head. Some citrus and grassy hop aroma with tannic underpinnings. Herbal, floral, and grapefruit hop characteristics. Some tannic character offsets a medium maltiness. Finish is residual bitterness with a tinge of phenol. Mouthfeel is medium and fairly dry.
3.1 Had high hope for this one because it was oak aged, and I usually like that. Well this time this beer was not anything special. Poured out an amber color wiht a dcent head. Decent aroma of citrus hop. The taste though just wasn’t there, not complex like a normal oak aged beer, just more plain than anything
3.0 Bottle. Orange amber pour. Woody hop aroma, earthy and slighty ’dirty’. Malty flavors, with more woody hops and a hint of oak (or maybe thats me wanting to taste the oak because of the label).
3.2 Pours a clear deep redish amber with a nice very dense off white head. Aroma is a rich fairly sweet citrusy hops with some candy like notes. Flavor is a quite biting hoppiness that definately has a woody quality but I would not have though it would be an intended "oaked" character. The trailer has a bit more of this character in it however. Not particularly rich of smooth and the bittierness keeps the malt flavors down too much I think.
2.9 12 oz. bottle labled Oak Aged IPA. I sure didn’t taste any oak. A bit of Bubble gum in the aroma, that was unexpected. Some hops in there too. The flavor was a bit of sour hops. And a little watered down. Not too great.
3.8 What a nice auroma and beautiful beer. Strong hops taste with a slightly bitter aftertaste that brings this beers rating down slightly. Overally, very nice.
3.0 Poured a clear amber color with a thin white head. Aroma of earthy hops, wood, and dirty toes. Slight touch of plastic. Flavor is malty with some acidity and bitterness on the finish.
