3.6 Bottle. Pours brown with a thin light tan head. Aroma of chocolate malt, dark roasted malt, dark chocolate, vanilla. Flavor of roasted malt, burnt malt, dark chocolate, bitter hops. Not super hoppy and IPA notes come in the form of bitterness rather than citrus like most black IPAs. Decent beer, pretty malty, more of a hoppy porter to me. 7/4/7/4/14 (3.6/5)
3.3 Backlog, early amateur rating! @ Havregatan 201209xx. Bottle from Systembolaget. Hoppy, roasted, sweet.
1.5 Pours black with dark beige head. Light aroma with some mushroom tones in the background and a slight chemical glue scent. Not much IPA-associations. Thin on the palate, still with an odd chemical note. Not very pleasant.
2.9 bottle. hazy brown with small head. roast malt body, a little on the thin side. rather mild hops. not awful, but not really a black ipa either.
3.0 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. The pour is dark brown, with a thin light khaki head and not much lace to be found at all. There is a lot of sediment that is seen floating through the beer. The aroma is some dark fruit, caramel, and a nice roastyness. There isn't any hop presence, and it smells like a bit of a porter. The flavor is definitely porter. There is a nice chocolatey roastyness on the front end and it moves through a nice caramel and dark fruit character. This tastes like a straight up. The mouth feel is thin, like an IPA should be, and the aftertaste is just a light roast. This is solid for a porter, not a black IPA.
2.9 Bottle. My only problem was the body was a bit thin. The taste was some what hoppy, mostly roast. Bitter dry roasted finish. Not bad.
3.8 Bottle on 03/21/2011 courtesy of Butters. Clear dark black body with ruby highlights and a large frothy off-white head. Sweet roast, chocolate and resiny hop aroma. Sweet roast, chocolate, light caramel, resiny hops and a dry bitter finish. Medium body with moderate carbonation.
2.9 Dark brown color, small brownish head. Cocoa, toasted malts, caramel. Medium-bodied. Licorice, some toasted malts, licorice candy. Lacks some hops for being a good black IPA.
2.9 3/25/2012. From bottle. Pours dark brown with a tan head. Malty aromas with fruit and caramel. Malty flavors with light hops. Unfortunately like most Magic Hat brews, this one falls short of being interesting.
3.8 Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a Pint glass. ("3/4 Pint of Ale" as they say on the label.) The label has a freshness date of "May 31 2011" and the abv is listed at 6%. Appearance: It has a very dark look in the glass with some very deep dark garnet colored highlights showing through the beer. I also noticed some fine sediment hanging in suspension within the body. To cap off this beer I got a dense tan head which stands two fingers tall. This head has excellent retention and coats the glass with lacing. Smell: I get a dark roasted malt character with hints of coffee and caramel. Hops are lighter than the malt and add some citrus and herbal notes to the nose. Taste/Palate: The palate opens up with mild sweetness, roasted malt, coffee and toasted bread with citrus hop notes quickly moving in. It finishes with pleasant herbal/leafy hop bitterness fading slowly off the tongue. It has a creamy and smooth mouth feel with pleasant soft carbonation. Notes: It come off more as a Porter than IPA but is still very tasty and beautiful.
3.1 12oz bottle. Pours a murky, dark brown color with a good sized foamy, light brown head.Aroma is a mix of roasted malt and slightly musty, grassy hops. Taste is roasted malt sweetness upfront with the slightest hint of bitterness midway with an odd bitter to sticky sweet finish. Medium to light body, ample fizzy carbonation.
3.2 Tydlig sötma i aroman. Lite lätt i kroppen. Ingen direkt fyllighet i smaken. Citrus i eftersmaken.
3.0 355 ml bottle, rated from backlog. Dark brown with small beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, molasses and chocolate. Taste follows; roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate. Finish with coffee and roasted notes. Weak body and a bit watery
3.6 (bottle - 12 oz) Dark brown pour with ruby red highlights and a thin off-white head. Roasted malt and slightly chocolatey aroma with some light hop notes underneath it. Chocolate malts and a nice hop bite at the beginning of the flavor. The chocolate and roasty malt really blend well and only enhance the hop bitterness. Slightly sweet and roasty aftertaste.
2.8 Bottle. Dark brown beer with a beige medium head. Malty, chocolate and coffee aroma. Ashes, sourish tar, coffee, bitter flavour.
3.1 Malty chocolate aroma with barely any hoppiness. The taste is slightly sour mostly malt not much hop bitterness. This black IPA focuses too much on the malt & doesn’t have enough bitterness I think... As it warmed up it got better but still not really IPA like more like a well done stout or porter.
3.1 lots of molasses, black bread and hops. Well balanced, slightly malt accented.
2.9 Bottle at Antenna America. Sweet flavors of licorice, chocolate, orange, cola or root beer. Not much in the nose, kind of industrial soda tasting. Very uninspiring.
3.1 Bottle, many thanks to rosenbergh. Dark brown color with small beige head. Roasted malt in aroma, coffee, molasses, dark chocolate. Taste, roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate. Coffee bitter finish. Almost no hops. This is definitely not Black IPA, but Stout. Despite that, drinkable beer.
3.5 Bottled. Deep amber colour, small head. Aroma is caramel, toffee, and some slight fruity and quite thick notes of tar. Flavour is syrup, toffee, mild toffee and roast. Quite pleasant Black IPA without all too much hops.
3.0 Bottle. Dark brown colour with a beige head. Aroma is sugar, roasted malt, spices. Flavour is sugar, roasted malt, caramel, hop, spices. Medium body. OK beer.
3.0 This is a stout - a slightly hoppy stout, but a stout all the same. No balance, very roasty with a mild hop finish. Missing a mid section. Left me a bit cold on an even colder night.
2.9 Malt and licorice flavors but not much from the hops. Doesn’t really feel like an IPA.
3.6 It pours a deep dark black with a small tan head that lasted for a good full minute. What there is of the lacing is spotty and slides down the glass slowly. The smell is basically roasted coffee beans with a bit of dark chocolate. The hops are very faint in the background. The taste is dominated by the roasted coffee beans with some malts coming back. The palate is about a medium with a decent level of carbonation and is mostly smooth and very creamy. Overall, not a bad beer, I’d probably get this again.
3.5 Dobre piwo, i choć pierwszy raz stykam się z gatunkiem BIPA to nie wyczuwam tego chmielu jak w jasnych IPA. Jest palono słodowe i lekko goryczkowe tylko. Koloru czarnej nocy. Przypomina mi to Stouta.
3.1 21-DEC-2012, bottle @home, from Systembolaget, present from Erik. Dark brown with lasting high tan head. Chocolate aroma or perhaps more like cocoa powder with some tea-like and citric hops. Taste the same. Bit dusty chocolate, roasted malt, not a lot of hops here, though. Tired? Medium body, soft carbonation, bitter finish. Thx Erik:-)
2.8 (Bottle, 0.355 l - BBE Jan 20 2013 [the sticker on the bottle tells 20130531 but the printing on the neck tells the earlier date], courtesy of rosenbergh, 20121214) The beer poured deep dark brown and clear. Its head was medium sized and lightly brown. Aroma had malts, chocolate, sweetness and hops. Palate was quite light bodied with medium carbonation. Flavour had roasted malts, sweetness, liquorice, lighlty hop flavours and low bitterness. Aftertaste was sweet, roasty and bitter. Not an IPA and not a stout either; some weird combination of the style not showing any of the good characteristics really.
2.9 12 ounce bottle. Pours a dark brown with a small biege head. Aroma of roasted malt and chocolate. Taste is roasted malt, chocolate, dark fruit, and a bit of hops. OK.
2.9 Bottle 12fl.oz. Clear dark brown colour with a small to average, frothy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, chocolate, moderate to light hoppy. Flavour is moderate sweet and light to moderate bitter with a average to long duration, roasted, roasted. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20121110]
3.8 Bottle. Creamy off-white good mostly lasting head. Dark red-amber colour. Heavy malty and moderate hoppy aroma. Heavy bitter strange but nice flavor. Chocolate and smoked notes. Long heavy bitter finish. Creamy palate.
