Magic Hat Fat Angel

Magic Hat Fat Angel

Fat Angel, rest his soul, had a complex palate that balances the rich pleasures of malt with the crisp refreshing flavor of hops with a finish that is fresh and clean. Eminently drinkable, Fat Angel brought divergent tastes together to create a satisfyingly smooth harmony.

3.3 Had this back in twenty-aught-six: Hazy, golden orange color. Slight head but with a nice lace. Cloudy and hazy. Little carbonation. Strong, sweet malt smell but with a slight hop background. Malt dominates. Very minor apricot smell. Strong yeast flavor, but with a malty base. Has a hit of hops that offsets the malt. Very bitter hop accent, but still dominated by hops. Three-headed monster: yeast, then malt, then hops. (And with that hint of apricot.) Medium-body, almost a dry feel. Has a strange, ashy feel, like an ashtray. Flatter-than-normal, but an ale. A decent, somewhat fruity brew. Fruity, sweet malt with a tiny bitter jab.
3.1 Bottle. 12 oz. Pours hay blonde with a moderate, slightly fizzy white head. Aroma of hops, wheat, sweet malts, and odd little hints of funk and bubblegum. Medium to thin bodied with a crisp, refreshing, semi-tart finish. Decent brew.
2.3 A smooth and medium bodied pale ale with a light, malty flavor. Nothing special.
2.3 Transfer review. Hazy gold color, somewhere between straw yellow and a lighter shade of amber. Very silky wet head, easily separates into dallops. Cool. Nose is reminiscent of an artificial sweetener in soda pop. Flavor has a distinct bubble gum flavor, and this is not because the beer is bad. It really has a bubble gum taste. Some metallic hops at the end but you don’t notice it. Instead you’re asking yourself if you had bubble gum earlier in the day or if the beer is bad. Easy to drink. Might be a good beer to give to the wife or girlfriend, or both.
2.8 Dry hopped? Not sure where all the hops went here. More caramel malts and some faint hops. Just always has that old taste.
2.2 Aug ’08 Flavor: Light sweetness, some malts Palate: Light body, not much of a finish, dry Overall Impression: Pretty bland, not offering too much to get excited about.
4.4 One of my fav beers ever. Very disapointed that it was retired. Great bite and nice alcohol content.
3.0 Bottle. haha wow this is retired i didnt even know. Pours an amber body with an off white head. Sweet simple and malty caramel with a light grassy hoppy signature MH trademark. Eh.
3.1 Refreshing, hoppy, slightly fruity taste, nice aftertaste. This is a good beer for a summer day.
3.1 Bottle - appreciate the subtle artwork. Dusty malty nose, a bit of grass and dark caramel, funky hops but not in spades. Hazy amber pour with a soapy tan head. Taste is very dry, slightly dusty and a bit dirty, some caramel and earth. Lasting hoppy dryness long after. Not very crisp, but still somewhat sharp. Chalky citrus, lightish medium body. The taste is somewhat lacking here, but the feel is absolutely superb - really feels like it’s cleaning out the mouth, implores you to have four or five more. Moderately refreshing, would have again.
2.6 12oz bottle from random store in manhattan. copper yellow pour. off white head. yeasty and light hop aroma. caramel and malt flavors. moderate sweetness. light bodied. fairly bland. K-5.5
2.6 Says they’re retired, but they’re still available here for now. Pours flat brown. A hoppy aroma that is relatively weak. Taste is that of a standard pale ale, but a bit hoppy. Hops don’t seem forced. Smooth drink. Pretty average, take or leave beer.
3.1 Definite hops, but a more smooth hops taste as opposed to many other hop infused ales. The rich golden brown color screams hops and delivers with a fruity aftertaste. The aroma is a rich fruity combination that comes through well in the beer. Tasty slow drinking beer...
3.3 Bottle - poured out with a thin white head. Sweet aroma; somewhat hoppy. First Magic Hat experience and I’d have to say it’s a lot sweeter than I expected. Watered down Sweet & Sour flavor with a very subtle bitter finish. "Decent."
2.8 Aroma of piney hops. Appearance is redddish, like most pale ales. Persistent white head. The flavor is bitter, hoppy, and malty, and a little stale. The palate leaves a modest hop burn. Decent ale, not great.
2.8 I was a little disappointed with this from Magic Hat. Pours a copper color with a medium to thick white head and a decent amount of lacing on the glass. Some apricot, hops and overall sweet, as most Magic Hat beers are on the sweet side, with a bitter finish. There are plenty of other beers from Magic Hat that are much better.
3.5 Fat Angel by Magic Hat. What can I say? Its original and distinctivly different. Which is what Magic Hat is great at. Full bodied, sweet, malty, and complex. A great beer.
2.9 Glad I got to try it on tap at the brewery in Burlington before it was retired, even though it wasn’t really a great beer. Anyway, it was served cold on tap. Poured medium brown and had an aroma of...I don’t know, it was actually really weak. You could taste the hops alright but the malts weren’t all that present. It was an okay beer but certainly not Magic Hat’s best. It won’t be sorely missed.
2.9 altogeather it was refreshing lightly hoppy and a bit watery. with adequate tastes it was decent. the malt was ok i guess and the beer was a weak interpretation of some of the good qualities of a pale ale (for an american brewer. for an english brewer it was quite flavorful and quite enjoyable for the lack of sweetness +2 points for that!)
3.2 Similar to the #9but not fruity. amber color with white head, hopy and has a great aroma. Magic hats best beer
3.4 To me this is very much like #9, with more complexity and a little stronger hop notes. Tastes like a pale ale with, hints of spice & orange. Overall a decent beer sorry to see it’s being retired.
2.4 You know, it was alright but not my favorite. 12 ounce bottle. Poured a medium dark brown if that makes sense. Not alot of head, no real lacing. Some hops, didn’t really get the malt. It was alright but not the best. Maybe it should be retired.
2.9 It had a decent color and aroma but failed to get my attention as I drank it. It was mediocre and nothing seemed to make me think about it while I drank it.
2.7 Bottle. orange color, offwhite head. Quite weak aroma. Fruity hoppy flavor but really not that much to taste in it.
2.9 Just a general comment on this one -- it’s so light and smooth that it nearly gets away with its lack of substance. Truthfully, this beer is probably not as bad is its rating, but for folks looking for a nice bitter English ale, they will not find much in common with the Brit lines of the same style.
3.1 Very smooth with an interesting light color.... very refreshing ice cold. A nice pale ale that is almost too easily consumable.
2.9 This beer is an English pale ale but the hopping is spicy rather than earthy. Dry finish, clean taste. Not the best.
3.0 light look to the pale ale upon the pour. little lacking in flavor and easy drinking. middle line beer not rushing to buy. better pale ale’s out there, more flavor/aroma etc.
4.7 This is my favorite beer of all time... I work next door to this place, and I have tried them all. This one is by far the best beer in the line-up! I could take the tour everyday and drink free samples until they ask me to leave! Magic Hat is the best beer in VT. Enjoy!!
2.7 12-oz bottle from SS ’07. Pours hazy orange with a small, rocky, off-white head, somewhat lasting with fair lacing. Aroma is average malt (grain, meal), average hops (grass), average yeast (dough) with notes of paper and apple. Light bodied, slick texture, average carbonation, and a bitter finish, kind of wet and spicy palate. Average duration, light sweetness, moderate acidity and bitterness; husky grain and tea flavor with raw hop leaf at the end.
