Magic Hat Heart Of Darkness Stout (2012-)

Magic Hat Heart Of Darkness Stout (2012-)

Filled with the howling of black dogs that haunt the long forgotten shadows of the human soul.

Our inky-black stout had a smooth, round palate with a dreamlike undercurrent of bittersweet chocolate. This dense liquid-silk summoned hope from hibernation and balanced winter’s endless white snows with a rich swirl of creamy black rapture.

3.1 Bottle. Pours black with medium tan head. Smells of dark chocolate, coffee, and malt. Medium body and carbonation. Taste up front is slightly sweet like dark chocolate, which is quickly overpowered by a sourness similar to tart cherries or plums. A little tart for my taste but not bad overall.
3.3 Dark brown pour, thin beige head. Medium toast, light coffee, prunes and molasses. A tad thin. A little odd.
3.4 Poured from 12 oz. bottle at Gilly's Beer & Fine Wine in Rockville, MD. Opaque, brown-black with small khaki head and light tan head and good lacing. Aroma of caramel, chocolate, roasted malt, mild coffee and mild dark fruit (mostly berries). Taste of roasted malt, berries, chocolate, caramel, dark fruit and mild roasted coffee. A straightforward sweet stout--not as complex as my description makes it sound. Medium/light body and medium/high carbonation.
3.0 Inky, cloudy black brown. Almost zero head and lacing. Coffee, expresso, black cherry, vanilla. Low, even bitterness throughout. Some sweetness comes through on the finish.
3.7 (bottle - 12 oz - 2013 vintage) Dark black pour with a puffy tan head. Rich roasted coffee and burnt malt aroma. Flavor starts bitter and roasty with a heavy bitter aftertaste. A bit thin bodied but good roasty flavor.
4.0 Pours a dark black almost like oil, with tan head. Roasted malts, cocoa, and some dark fruits on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with an interesting roasty note.
3.5 Dark brown/black color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of toasted malt, cocoa/chocolate, & some coffee, Flavor of roasted malt, dark chocolate, some hops, and coffee; Not bad.
3.5 Pours black. Aroma and taste are chocolate and roasted malts. Light to medium bodied.
3.6 12oz bottle from Wegman’s, Buffalo, NY. Glossy black with a thin beige head; aroma of deeply roasted chocolate malts; smooth in the mouth with a fruity, nutty, chocolate taste; and a silky chocolate finish. A rather good stout.
3.2 Pours opaque black with a 1-finger tan head. Aroma of cocoa and a light burnt note, with maybe some dairy cream underneath. Medium body, a bit watery with a brief finish. Roasty malt flavor up front that gives way to a chocolate note.
3.8 Hmmmmmm. Although ’tis spring, the little sign @ the local liquor sellers said "Last Chance" sale since the 12er I bought is a "Winterland" variety pak. But my goodness this is a most flavorful Stout. Poured into an english pint glass; a dark, sweet aroma emits that befits the nearly blackish coloring and the taste, richly smoothly satisfyingly lip smackin’ goodness. Hopefully, whence it’s return in 6 or so months, it will be welcomed here with a relishment.
3.8 355 ml bottle. Clear, dark brown body with a medium sized, lacing frothy tan head. Nice and gentle aroma of dark malt, mocha and milk chocolate. Flavor is sweet and smooth in the same direction as the aroma indicates. Silk smooth with mild balanced bitterness. Fine body and good aftertaste. Avery nice stout indeed.
3.4 2014 bottle to a tulip glass. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma is dark malt with a little roast, dark chocolate, and a little tart cherry. Taste is a roasted, almost charred malt, milk chocolate, a little coffee bitterness at the end. Not much sweetness. Ends a little tannic and vegetal. Has a medium, slightly rounded mouthfeel with a good amount of carbonation and a bit of a sting to go with it.
3.3 This is not great and it’s not bad either. Some roast malt notes with some sweet raisin elements as well. The body is sweet and thin and has a lingering sweetness.
2.7 Looks like a cola. Dark brown withno head and lots of bubbles bursting at the surface. Nutty creamy aroma. Flavor is raisin and coffee. Body is thin. Fruit forward and not a lot else. Not quite sweet, but I think diacetyl is making it feel richer than it should be. Exactly what I picture from a Magic Hat stout.
2.7 12 oz. bottle. Chocolate and malt are evident. A bit watery, not mixed well.
4.3 Light cannot penetrate this stout. Murky , squid-ink black. Think death in a glass. A nice coffee left-over. I would place this on the desert beer list. Yes, after a good prime rib sit back and sip it. Certainly not a high-alcohol stout. Good for sissy-pants whom are just wetting their pallets.
3.3 Pours a dark black with a 2 finger khaki head with decent lacing that hung around for a little while. Notes of milk chocolate, sweet grapes, roasted malts. Taste same as aroma but roasted malts more pronounced on the back end. Smooth creamy mouthfeel though. Wish it had a bit more body but not complaining. Very drinkable stout.
2.8 Bottle. Nothing too exciting, just your average stout. Too thin of a palate for a stout. Some notes of bittersweet chocolate and roasted malt. Funky nose.
3.5 12 oz bottle from Evergreen Discount into a pint glass. Black appearance with light sediment. Light brown head that diminishes to a thin ring and leaves light lacing. Aroma of milk chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, light vanilla and light fruits. Similar flavor, rich and fairly sweet, with light bitterness. Medium body, smooth and creamy with soft carbonation. Pretty straight forward stuff, but it works for me.
3.6 Pours out black with a big tan head that sticks around for a while, this is a great looking beer. Roasted, nutty, and fruity aromas waft up out of the mug. The flavor is quite sweet and fruity, with a fairly low share of roastiness I usually associate with a stout. Some tanginess, from the hops perhaps? Roasted flavors come through in the aftertaste, but as an odd ashy sensation. Decent mouthfeel, not quite up to the claims in the copy but still a pleasant, thick stout.
2.7 Light sweet notes. A little roasty. Looks lighter like a Porter or almost a brown ale. Taste is light. Malty. A little roastiness. A little alcohol and a little dull hops. Palate is light but smooth sort of like... plasticy ChapStick note on the finish. Overall this is an OK beer... but its lacking in execution. Hops seem off and its too malty. Also not enough body for a stout... definitely drinks like a porter or even a brown ale. Plastic note kills this finish. Oh well. Its karma for only trusting rate beer.
3.3 2014/02/20 - Pours an opaque black colour with a two finger, frothy, tan head that quickly reduces to a lingering surface film and leaves moderate lacing. Aroma is roasted malts, cereal and cocoa Pours a black color with a decent tan head that fades to nits of lacing. Taste is similar to nose; lots of roasted notes, coffee and bittersweet chocolate. Mouthfeel is silky with smooth carbonation and a bitter, slightly drying finish. Nicely balanced, but nothing special.
3.1 chocolate, caramel, leather, resin, licorice, vanilla, black, brown, white foam, brown foam, medium bitterness, salty, medium body, full body, thick feel, average carbonation, astringent,
3.3 Light caramel and roasted malts in the flavor. A smooth, mellow, and nicely balanced stout. It is not very smoky, and is pretty light on the palate. The aroma is nothing special, but it does taste good.
3.5 Pours a black color with a decent tan head that fades to nits of lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, trace of chocolate with a bit of bitterness mixed in. taste follows with roasted malt, slightly burnt and bittersweet chocolate. Nice bitterness and a dry finish. Fairly full body and nice creamy texture. Enjoyable stout but expected a bit more character.
3.5 Black, good lacing Medium body and flavor intensity, fairly well knit texture, very good length. Moderately high bitterness, not too dry, Roast flavors dominate, coffee,
2.7 A near dark beer. It pours a very small head and leaves only a very small trace of lacing. A descent aroma that has hints of coffee, burnt wood, toasted cereal, with a bitterness. Ok flavor that is very similar to the aroma. Not as flavorful as I would have liked it to be, felt a little flat. Had somewhat of a slightly sour finish. I would drink it again if it was offered to me but I wouldn’t seek it out. Not worth $10 a six pack to me. Not bad, not great only ok.
