Magic Hat Hocus Pocus

Magic Hat Hocus Pocus

Our take on the classic summer wheat beer...it’s a light, crisp ale for mowing lawns, hitting lazy fly balls and communing with nature. Glowing like brilliant rays of golden sun, its malty sweetness finishes tart and crisp. Hocus Pocus is best appreciated with a wedge of orange. Offered as a sacrifice to cloudless days.

2.6 Light. Crisp. Pretty dull. This is a beer for a hot day outside where you need more hydration than flavor.
2.8 This is one of those American wheat ales which was an old brewpub standby which they would sell to meek and dainty womenfolk who did not like strong beer. I am not sure that is the most delicate way to put that but, hey, don’t shoot the messenger. This is a perfectly clear golden beer w/ a long-lasting head of fine bubbles. It’s nose is of grain husk and bread yeast along w/ some grassy hops. This comes off as a little bit on the sweetside but that is mostly because there is not much bitterness. It smells pretty nice but it tastes a little flabby w/o much substance. A crisp bite of carbonation keeps it lively enough to be interesting though. Finish is just a lingering bit of sweetness w/ some nutty malts on the tongue. There is nothing really wrong w/ this beer and I enjoy the style despite my initial comment but this is frankly just forgettable.
2.1 12 oz. bottle. Gold color with a very brief white head. Not much of a noticeable aroma. Medium body, good carbonation. Very little wheat flavor. Clean finish. Drinkable, but not the best.
2.8 This pours a clear, yellow straw color with a thin, beige head. The aroma is of wheat and lemon zest. The taste is a watered down lemon, wheat beer. The after taste is slightly tart and a little off-putting. The texture is thin with not much happening. Not terrible but this could be better!
2.1 Lighter yellow, only slightly cloudy. Medium, shrinking fluffy head that easily settled in 1 pour; some lasting. Aroma is wheat, quite a bit of lemon. Flavor is about the same. Light body, slight tart I suppose. Not alot going on here really.
2.2 aroma of wheat, citrus, earth. pours golden blonde. a little cloudy, yet too clear. thing, whispy white head. tastes very light, almost watered down. slight wheat, citrus. ok taste but just too watery.
2.6 Not my favorite wheat beer, the aroma is both earthy and citrusy, with a cloudy gold color and mild spice after taste.
2.5 This beer was very light on the wheat flavor it had some resemblance of hops but very light
2.0 Somewhat cloudy gold with a medium white to tan head. Somewhat of a musty, wet earth aroma. Taste is a bit fleeting. There is a bit of bitter and a bit of sweet. The body is light and texture is thin with a slight sweet finish. Overall this is a light beer to be had on a hot day, but it’s nothing to go out of your way for. Think of it as eye-candy, or a conversation starter at a party where everyone is drinking natty, BL, and PBR. However, you might as well be drinking PBR.
3.0 Bottled. Poured cloudy lighter golden with a tall, creamy, sticky white head. The aroma picked up bright earthy wheat and orange zest, with faint undertones of band-aid.. smelled like it was going to be drinkable. The flavor found tart wheat, orange zest, and white spices throughout.. honey and generic pale malts supported.. tangy finish with orange rind and residual grainy sugars. Light-bodied with fairly high carbonation on the palate.. tangy and engaging in spots, but too many grainy sugars in others.. overall very drinkable, but not necessarily good.
3.0 Wheat session beer. Perhaps is better with that wedge of Orange like they say but I’m not personally a fan of disguising the beer with overwhelming flavors and it doesn’t seem necessary for many wheats I’ve had contrary to what some individuals will claim. My least favorite of the Magic Hat offerings I’ve tried so far.
3.3 355ml bottle. Very nearly clear yellow, moderate white head, some lacing. Aroma is mild, citrus and maybe even some grapefruit hops. Taste actually has some hops, but not much bitterness with more citrus fruits and grain. Body is pretty average. Overall, a bit unusual for a wheat, but refreshing and inoffensive. I’d drink it again.
2.6 Clear golden pour with a fluffy white head. Sweet malty aroma. Taste is bread, bitter citrus zest, and a hint of sweetness. A bit astringent. Prickly carbonation.
3.4 It pours from the bottle with a bright yellow-orange color. The aroma is a light mix of musty yet bright hop bitterness, a little lemon, and some earthy wheat. The flavor largely features a biscuity, almost tangy, light malt sweetness, but there is also a bit of dry, herbal hops to balance. Like the flavor, the texture is light but not too thin. Overall, this beer is light and drinkable, but it has a nice mild yet varied flavor profile.
3.5 Bottle. This one smells actually quite a bit hoppy, which I found surprising. The taste is fairly hoppy, too, which is not expected for a wheat ale. A little bitter in the taste. Great find for the style.
2.3 from bottle. pours light golden straw colour. bland aroma some lemons. flavour is bland too, some gentle hoppy bitterness light fruits, Would do nicely has a light summer beer but as a wheat beer is fails miserably.
2.8 Bottle poured a golden in color with a covering of white head. Aroma has wheat, grains, and mild hops. Mouth feel is light and the carbonation steady. Flavor has wheat, light bitterness, dull hops, and a bit of dampness.
2.8 Bottle. Very mild aroma, honey and citrus, hint of lemon. Taste is sweet. Uneventful finish, light body, thin texture. Not a whole lot going on with this one, easy-drinking wheat.
3.3 Bottled August 7, 2012. A: This is actually very interesting, most of Magic Hat’s beers I’ve had have been cloudy, when they shouldn’t, but this wheat ale is actually pretty damn clear, actually it’s crystal clear. There’s a thin white head with mediocre retention at best. S: The aroma leans sweet here with some honey aromas and citrus that’s lightly tart. T: Hocus Pocus is pretty standard here, dry wheat ale with mildly tart citrus. Nothing more to see here. T: Light with medium lightly sharp carbonation. O: This is what it is, nothing more nothing less, carry on.
3.2 12 oz. bottle from mix 12 pack. Pours a slightly hazy gold. Nose is lots of wheat and grain. As it gets real warm I noticed a lot of honey aroma’s as well. The flavor is identical to the nose. I feel this is rated really harshly. It’s a bit better than some ratings imply. Yes, it is simple and light bodied, yet really refreshing with decent flavor. This bottle was still in code, so still fresh. I have NO problem finishing the other bottles.
2.5 Not much in the aroma. Tastes hoppy for a wheat beer which is nice but overall this beer is bland.
2.8 12 oz Bottle. The pour was a clear light golden yellow with a large (2-3 finger) white cottony head that lasted a good while, eventually reducing to a medium film with fair spotty lacing. The aroma was of a light straw malt and a moldy cobweb yeast with notes of citrus (lemon) and wheat. Taste was mild and lightly sweet with a hint of citrus from the get go, with a nice crisp wheat flavor and a slight citrus peel bitterness towards the finish. The flavor stuck around for a decent duration with a crisp citrus taste left lying on the taste buds. Mouthfeel was light in body and watery in texture with an almost fizzy carbonation. Overall a Wheat Ale with a light bitterness and a good crisp refreshing taste. Great beer for a hot summer’s day...
2.7 Poured from 12oz bottle, pours a clear light yellowish golden with a bubbly white head and lacing, aroma is sweet with a hint of grain and lemon, the flavor is light and zesty, some lemon and grass in the finish, really boring, ugh, waste of $13 on this mix pack.
2.3 Pale gold with a good white head, smears of lace, and plenty of carbonation bubbles rising through the liquid. The taste starts with wheat and grass that is bypassed by a sour citrus and pine hop finish. Reasonable, light, but not satisfying enough to use on that "lazy fly ball" summer day in Magic Hat’s description.
1.8 on tap at reservoir, waterbury. almost clear pale yellow without a head. very faint wheat and malts, some yeastiness, light herbal notes with a short but present citrusy finish. almost aggressive carbonation, light body.
3.2 Aroma is lemons/ctirus, yeast and wheat. The flavor is light citrus, wheat malt a mix of mild sweetness and tartness in the finish.
2.4 I’m not a fan of wheat beers, but I don’t mind this one. It’s probably the filtration that makes it enjoyable for me, and earned it such a low score.
3.0 12 ounce bottle pours a cloudy yelloe color, aromas of wheat, light zest, and light grass. Flavors are the same, light tartness and bland, ok wheat beer.
2.5 Aroma has some zest, but mostly wheat. Color is is a translucent yellow/orange with a tick white head. Taste has a small small hop edge, but mostly sour and wheaty, not too fun. Palate is bland.
3.0 Nice white head, fully diminishing, clear, active carbonation, malty aroma, acidic mouth feel, light body
