Born of dark and cold and snow in the marrow of the northeast’s longest night, HOWL comes in on wailing winds with winter-weary eyes burning holes in sunless shadows. In its darkened depths our inner voids are warmed. 12.0° Plato

3.212oz. bottle. Malty, somewhat grainy aroma of black bread, mild roast, toasted nut and faint dark chocolate. Hazy dark brown in color, seemingly bottle conditioned, with a fine, uneven, lasting khaki head, lace is minimal. Dark, lightly roasty, biscuity and chocolate malts dominate the flavor profile, with a touch of dark sweetness appearing towards the finish. Late there is a very faint degree of bitterness, otherwise the hop presence is minimized. Creamy and smooth mouthfeel, body is medium. Easygoing and fairly flavorful rendition of this style, if somewhat unremarkable.
3.2One of the better beers from magic hat. Good rich flavors for the winter season.
3.0Bottle. Taste is charred wood, malt and a subtle hit of chocolate. Not too bad for a lager.
3.0Pours black with a whitish head. No nose to speak of. Taste is of roasted malts, a hint of coffee, and some bitter hops on the finish. It's alright.
2.4Magic Hat Howl, indeed........your ASS will be HOWLING the blues my friend. When drinking this swill I wanted a "MAGIC HAT" that would transmute this beverage of ill-repute into the BEVERAGE OF GLORY: BLATZ! ’Twas not to be. This stuff while better than average junk, is still junk. Or not. If Fred Sanford wouldn’t drink this stuff, it is fair to say neither should you, you BIG DUMMY! Save your dollars and invest wisely my thirsty friends.....that’s right.....over there....in the Budget aisle....Blatz...or Hamm’s....or Schlitz....or Pabst. If you have this stuff on hand keep it for your "friends"....the friends who throw you under the bus. THOSE kinds of "friends"!
3.6This very nice bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a beautiful very large sized head of foamy fine to medium sized light brown colored bubbles that were long lasting and left behind a typically carbonated semi-opaque dark brown colored body and an excellent lacing. The weak aroma was dark malt. The semi-thick mouth feel was weakly tingly at the start and at the finish. The flavor contained notes of mild roasted malt chocolate and dark malt. Delicious and one I would certainly like to have again.
2.9Bottle gift from my nephew Mathew. This definitely has a roasted burnt malt flavor. A little thin in body, but it had some character.
3.4Nice color. Tastes mildly sweet with a coffee finish. Not too bitter. Finishes with a light, sweet aftertaste.
1.5Very mild light dark pour. No head. Corn, band-aid and oats. Hint of chocolate. Very dry and old taste up front. lots of band-aid in this. Some chocolate and maple and brown sugar. Dry finish.
3.1Bottle. Pours black with off white/light tan head. Nose/taste of smoked malt, black malt, light cocoa and grain/corn. Finishes with smoked cocoa and barley. Lighter to medium body.
3.5Not bad. Pours a dark copper into the glass with a small white head. Malts on the nose. I was expecting some spice characters with this one, maybe some cinnamon etc but those weren’t to be found. That being said the malt character with this brew is respectable and it is still tasty. I would drink it again.
2.7Little carbonation. No head. Coffee taste. If you like coffee beers then you will like this. Nice sweet after taste.
3.4A good winter beer. Pours darker. Brownish I think. Good roasty aroma. Taste is nutty and smooth. Much better than I expected. Would have again
2.7Refrigerated bottle poured into a shaker. Pours black with dark brown highlights and two inch off-white head. Some thin lacing, medium/light body, medium carbonation, and light roasted malt aroma. Taste is roasted malt, some herbal hops, and finishes light bitter hops.
3.512 oz bottle. Awesome looking label. Roasted malt aroma. Hints of caramel and coffee. Medium body that would be nice on a cold late night before bed.
3.1Jungle Jim’s bottle with the Black as Night winter label. Nice looking pour with a giant chocolate milk head that settles quickly into a thing film. Pretty bold aroma of dusty chocolate and strangely enough reminds me of Ernie’s warehouse. Flavor is pretty big but there’s something off that I just can’t place; strange, like a really powerful "pale lager" note right in the middle. Like I’m enjoying a nice schwarzbier and suddenly a Budvar pops up in the middle? Lingering bitterness. okay
3.6Pours a very dark black color with almost no head. Aroma is overly roasted malt, smells burnt and smokey but I like it. Also getting marshmellow and bacon. Taste is burnt and smokey. Probably the most roasted black lager I’ve had and its surprisingly good. Very smooth, light body, medium carbonation. Leaves a burnt flavor on the finish. A very good black lager thats easy to drink.
3.8Mild roasted malt aroma. Nice creamy head with lots of floaty bits. Good malty flavor. A decent schwarz.
3.6Dark beer with ruby highlights when held up to the light. Creamy tan head out of the keg. NIce roasted grains in the nose with some brown sugar sweetness. Flavors of coffee and toast. Dark caramel sweetness that gets more prominent as it warms. Nice black beer.
3.2...from the bottle. Dark brown\ black pour with dark tan head. Lots of roasted malts and some nuttiness. Had nice smooth flavor, was relatively creamy. Finished with roasted nut flavor, was pretty decent actually.
3.6A bit sweet and roasty in the aroma. This is a tad sweet but also quite thick. Very much in the schwarzbier style. Not bad, just not what I’m feeling right now.
3.2Pours black, almost opaque, with a small light brown head mostly dissipating. Nose is malt and yeast. Fairly creamy on the palate, the taste dark roasted malt, with hints of chocolate and coffee. Nice tasting schwarztbier. Pairs well with mixed nuts.
3.1Draft at Sugar Moms. Dark pour with minimal head. Burned toast. Not too sweet or bitter. Crisp flavor but thin palate.
3.4Aroma is dark grains and a strong nuttiness. The flavor is caramel/toffee and very nutty, with a hint of fruit and acidity in the finish.
3.1bottle - Pours very dark brown with a small light tan head. It was a malty, chocolate accented aroma. The flavor is roast malt with not much more going on. It’s one dimensional to me, an okay but uninteresting medium bodied brew.
3.5Alright, this is a good, but not great, schwarzbier. It was a gift from my girlfriend and well appreciated, but there are better black lagers out there.
3.3Bottle. Dark brown with thin tan head. Nose is pretty mild, some roast, light cocoa, molasses. Flavor is similar, some roast, lactose, minerals. Easy drinking and unoffensive, if boring.
3.4Bottle. Poured a dark brown with a tan head. Aroma of roast and dark chocolate. The flavor found roast, coffee, and cocoa. Light to medium body and a roast aftertaste.
2.6This thing is kinda heavy and really is dark, but it’s all about crisp hops, it’s not rich, not sweet, not malty. There’s a slight malt finish, though.
3.3Pours a very dark brown to almost black with a large caramel head. There is not much of an aroma but there is a little hint of hops and just a bit more so of malty roast. It has a light to medium bitter taste and a bit of sweetness. The body is light to medium with a somewhat thin, creamy texture. The finish is enjoyably bitter-sweet. Not a bad beer, but also nothing special. Yet another beer I wouldn’t buy at bar price.
