Magic Hat Jinx

Magic Hat Jinx

Earthy, rich and steeped in autumn’s magic: it’s an ale of change. This potent infusion is haunted by memories of summer and the first frost on abandoned fields.
Jinx prepares the bones for snow. It has the glint of golden maples at peak and finishes light as an ode to the fading sun. A bit of peat-smoked malt imparts a subtle hint of smoke that reminds us of fall’s bonfires.
Available in the Fall.

2.6 A below average scotch ale, pretty boring. Pours a super clear ruby red with little head. Smells of fruit, caramel, a bit of vanilla and hazelnut. Taste is quite empty, smooth but forgettable, with a strange caramel apple finish. Had in the bottle.
0.8 The smoky aftertaste emulated a campfire, but failed to capture the pleasantness of such a setting. I thought the aftertaste killed the beerperience.
3.0 12 oz bottle from variety pack. Clear amber. Aroma dark sugar, dried fruit, caramel. Fruity sweet caramel, toast. Used to love this in college around 12 years ago, and now I’m extremely unimpressed and almost put off. This is a non-committal smoked beer, and it’s not enjoyable as a smoked beer, nor as an unsmoked Scotch ale. I think they added smoke since I last had it.
3.6 Bottle, brown pour, white head, nose is smoky, taste is smoky, really good smoky beer
3.6 12 oz bottle. Pours dark red with long lasting, white head and nice lacing. Aroma is of caramel, cherries, hints of grassy hops and smoke. Body is medium and slightly crisp. Caramel, piney hops, smoked wood and ripe fruit fill the mouth. Finish is long and semi-dry. Not bad for Magic Hat.
3.3 deep amber to light brown color; aroma of caramel malt and floral hops; a well balanced beer; bready malt and roasted malt with caramel notes, balanced nicely with floral hops
3.0 Bottle at home. Pours clear brown with a medium, creamy tan head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is light oak and smoke, dates, toast malt and earthy hops. Flavor is sweet malt, light smoke, light hops and bitterness with a sweet finish. Medium body and carbonation.
3.1 Bottle from Night Of The Living Dead Variety Pack. Clear amber pour. Aroma of brown sugar, light smoke, dried fruit, red berries. Flavor is caramel, toast, fruity. Not really smoky on the palate, more like a burnt sugar flavor. Fuller bodied. Long finish, kind of dry. Not bad at all.
3.3 12 ounce bottle purchased at Total Wine Pembroke Pines, FL for $11.99/variety-pack. Very good.
3.1 A rather metallic aroma with a nice clear Carmel brown color. You can taste the smoked malts on the initial taste and then it fades to a nice hoppiness. I'm not a huge fan of Scottish ales, but I can do this one. Not a favorite, but I certainly wouldn't be disappointed to be handed one.
3.4 Very enjoyable beer. Little spice. Great head. Good looking and good tasting.
3.2 A light smoke with sugar as well in the aroma. This is just another ho-hum beer by magic hat. More sweet than smoky, it just isn’t that good or interesting.
2.7 Bottle. Lightly smoky lactic toffee malt aroma. Amber with nice head. Sour milk and toffee malt flavor. Medium body. Okay but kind of boring.
3.6 12 oz. bottle, from Timmy. Pours clear brown, with a medium, beige head. The aroma is oats, light peaty earthiness, caramel, toast, and a touch of dark cherries. Sweet, with a little bitterness. Medium body, lightly carbonated, sharp, and a little harsh. Overall, this is a nice, peaty, smoky scottish ale. Easy and approachable, but with some complexity.
3.2 Pours deep amber orange with a slight tan head. Aroma is predominately caramel, dark chocolate, peat and a trace of smoke. Taste is sweet with some acidic tart undertones. It drank surprisingly full bodied with a thicker texture and mild carbonation. I was surprised at the heft. Not much smoke, but a decent Scotch Ale.
4.4 Nice copper color, lots of carbonation and a 2 finger head. I find it really well balanced, medium mouthfeel
3.2 Bottle. Pours a muddy amber-brown with a foamy off-white head. Aroma of malt, yeast, wood, a hint of smoked meat, grass, Taste is sweet and smoky, of dark fruits, raisins, malt, brown sugar, caramel, grass, and a hint of smoke. Lingering sweetness. Decent.
2.4 355ml bottle. Amber pour. Strugglign to find an aroma for this beer, vaguely caramel. Falvor is like caramel seltzer water. Pas sonit.
3.3 Always fun to pick up a beer from the mixer sixer rack and find its retired when I get home. I bet this will be great! It is a slightly brownish orange in color with a long lasting head of fine bubbles and little ropes of lace. It doesn’t really smell smokey, just phenolic. It is sort of like eating a banana next to a barbecue with a hint of toasted malt character--oddly, this is not entirely bad. Taste is thick and sweet. It reminds me somewhat of an ancient high gravity malt liquor pulled off the bottom shelf of a convenience store but somehow that’s kind of good too. I dunno, if you like some fucken weird shit that’s old and not outright terrible, I recommend searching a dusty singles rack for this stuff.
3.3 Bottle: Night of the Living Dead pack Clear copper....whipped beige head. Cola, cherry-smoked wood aroma. Taste is sweet, cherry-maple, soft-light smoke, sweet caramel. Pretty good, but only minimally smoky.
3.2 Dark amber pour. Thin head. Aroma is malty, some caramel, a little roasted. Flavor is sweet, smooth. Caramel. A slightly bitter finish with some alcohol.
5.0 Singular best beer I have ever had the gastric pleasure of drinking. A perfectly crafted beer for the season it debtuted. If you drank this beer and did not like it, you were having issues beyond the scope of rating the drink-ability of beer in the snapshot of fall in which this beer was available. If it is brewed again, savor the distinct time which it signifies. That pretty much defines a hall of fame beer. All Time Great
3.2 Rated on 4-19-2009 (Bottle) This bottled beer pours a medium sized very fizzy ivory head with poor retention, transparent golden body, and fast rising carbonation. The Aroma is malty, lightly hoppy, some spice notes, and mildly smokey. The Taste is spicy, malty, lightly hoppy, mildly smokey, and has a dry finish. The Palate is tingly and this beer is light-medium bodied. Overall, this beer is quaffable and worth a try if one enjoys Smoked beers.
3.6 Originally reviewed: 12/9/08. Pours a tawny brown with a huge frothy head that retains as good as it gets. Takes a little while to pour this bad boy. So far, so good. Alright let’s take a whiff...smells of pine, caramel, and a slight astringent scent that I can’t rightly place, but it does smell like some sort of furniture polish? Let’s hope that’s not what I’ll be using this for. On to the flavor. Sort of a dry, mealy taste paired with a slight metallic bite. A little hop presence, but this is knocked to the ground by a huge malt backbone! Slight caramel mixed in and I think walnuts are what I’m tasting. Mmmm. I like this. This is my first dabble into the world of Wee Heavy’s, but I’m glad I entered. Lead me on, Scotsman!
3.1 Dark brown/cider color; Light to medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of sweet malt, & subtle fruit; Flavor of toasted malt, caramel, syrup, and some chocolate; The smoke is lacking on this one - only traces of it; Interesting brew.
2.9 Reviewed from notes (2007). A: Copper-Amber-Brown with a very thin cream offwhite head S: Peat smoked roasted malts.. real earthy with some hop accents T: Honestly, the flavor is so flat and mucky.. the malts are real bland .. only the interest of the smoky peat flavor is notable M: Medium bodied with some carbonation.. a bit jumbled on the palate some sips are lasting others not so O: The flavor really hurts the overal impression
3.1 Everything about this beer is just deep and earthy. It pours a deep amber color, with hints of caramel. It has almost a smoky quality to it.
3.6 Pours a Hazy Amber/reddish brown colour with a 1 finger creamy white head that stuck around. Earthy herbal smell, fairly sweet with a bit of smoke and peat moss. Taste: Peppery, Earthy, Brown sugar, Roasted malts, Rye, My notes go on - there was quite a bit here! Medium bodied. Note to Magic Hat - Look at some of your reviews, retire the mediocre beer (Circus Boy, Demo, Wacko) and bring this one back.
3.4 Reviewed from notes. Poured into a snifter. The color is a moderately-dark brown color with a light head. The nose brings some dark fruits, roasted malt, light toffee, and some caramel. The taste has some dark fruits and also includes a bit of light candied toffee. Feel is nice and a bit heavy. Drinks well enough, but nothing to really pull me back for seconds. 4.0 Appearance: Pours a deep amber/caramel color with a one finger head. Minimal lacing. Smell: Nice roasted malt scent. Nicely sweet and not overpowering at all. Taste: Almost overwhelming burst of flavor at the front. Smoky caramel with a hint of sweetness. Finishes with a nice, light hoppy bitterness. Mouthfeel: Very smooth mouthfeel for a medium-bodied beer. Very light carbonation. Drinkability: Medium drinkability. I could have two or three of these without hesitation but would not want more than that in one sitting as it is fairly filling.
