Magic Hat Odd Notion - American Wheat IPA (Spring 10)
This unique surprise cross-pollinates the classic American wheat beer with an American Pale Ale. What grows next is a fruitfully unfiltered union with a delightful hop aroma, a pleasant citrus hop flavor, and a beautifully balanced finish that leaves other ales hoppy green with springtime envy.

3.3Bottle at Bob’s indirectly from Steve. Pretty decent magic hat. Nice body, bright fresh taste, plenty of citrus, a bit of hoppiness, nice body, liked it, would actually try it again.
2.2Pours a hazy amber from a bottle. Kind of a weak IpA with a wheat afterthought.
3.0Bottle from Magic Hat’s winter variety pack (labeled as "Encore American Wheat IPA"). Pour is clear copper with a one - finger head. Not much in the way of aroma; perhaps some subtle hints of citrus. Mouthfeel is rather thick for a wheat ale, buts it’s not unwelcome. Taste is wheaty with a slightly bitter, hoppy finish. Overall it’s tolerable but nothing to write home about.
3.4From 12 oz bottle, variety pack. Had this on a few other occasions and multiple 12 oz form this pack.
Aroma: Citra hops, Citrus
Appearance: Amber-Orange, Cloudy liquid, white head
Taste: Heavy Bitter
Palate: Light body, sticky texture, average carbonation, bitter finish
Overall: Citra hops and Wheat IPAs seem to be a thing here in Vermont. I prefer Zero Gravity’s Conehead IPA over Encore, but there’s a few similarities and key differences. Firstly, I do not like Citra hops - I must have burned out on it a few years ago when I loved them and homebrewed everything using them - now it just has this strange taste that I can’t get out of my mouth. The hops have a very strong bitterness, but a nice aroma. I’d prefer a little less bitterness from the hops. The malt and body is nice, I just don’t like the sharp bitterness. Not bad for a Wheat IPA.
3.7Enjoyed at home after a week of being sick over the holidays. Appearance is a cloudy gold with a rich white head. Aroma is a nice mixture of wheat, clove, yeast. Taste is pretty good, nice notes of orange peel, wheat, citrusy hops, moderate carbonation. I'm a fan, good start to 2015 beers!
3.3Bottle as Encore part of the mixed 12 pack. Pours hazy light gold with a white head. Nose is full of orange and orange peel. Moderate bitterness with some wheat. Light body, but somewhat watery.
3.6Moderate hop aroma hides the stronger hoppy flavor that has a light bitterness. The bottle poured amber with a fair amount of head.
3.6Pours a slightly orangey amber, somewhat hazy, with a huge, frothy, tan head that stays until politicians are honest! Thick, sticky lacing. Nose is malt and spunky citrus. Taste is fresh and balanced. Sweet backbone migrating to a nice grapefruity hop bite, trailing off to a orange zest finish. Medium bodied brew with lively carbonation. I like it.
3.4Probably my favorite beer out of the Winterland 2014 pack. Smooth and sweet with a decent hop flavor. Light and refreshing. A good change this season.
3.9Rated based on notes taken 4 Feb 2012 -- Very strong hop presence. Lots of aroma and flavor, almost zero bitterness. Enjoyable.
3.6Bottle from sampler pack 2014. Citrus nose and medium body. Bites a bit at first with citrus rind feel but malt tries to mask it. Very dry and wheat adds a nice touch. Cuts thru the palate well. Decent but not amazing.
3.5Pours gold with white head. Wheat, hop, floral citrus and honey aroma and flavors. Medium light body and average carbonation with a citrus finish.
3.1A decent wheat ipa. Strong malty flavor with a bitter slightly hoppy finish. Smells wheaty and pours light yellow in color. Had at home out of a bottle
2.9Hazy orange with a bright white one-finger head and nice lacing. Grassy hop aromas with notes of pine and citrus and bready malts. Modestly bitter hop taste with a strong bready malt backbone. Medium body, highly carbonated, prickly mouthfeel and a crisp finish.
3.4Poured a gold colour with a medium fluffy white head. Aroma is primarily a pine with notes of citrus hoppiness. A bready flavor is coupled with hoppy citrus and is followed by a strong pine bitterness. A fairly carbonated medium brew with a dry finish.

Poured from bottle into pint glass
Appearance – Pours a hazy orange color with a one finger white head. The head fades rather fast, but leaves a decent level of lacing on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is heaviest of a pine smell. Mixed with this are notes of a caramel and citrus sweetness as well as a lighter grapefruit and grassy hop smell.
Taste – The taste begins with a bready and light citrus sweet flavor. Mixed with these tastes is a pine hopiness. As the taste advances the sweetness fades and more pine hop comes to the tongue. More toward the end, other hop flavors of a grassy and grapefruit nature mix with the increasing pine hop and the decreasing sweetness, to produce a slightly bitter and drier flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the just above average side in terms of creaminess with the carbonation level being rather average. Pretty nice for the hop as well as the transitions from sweet to more bitter.
Overall – Rather easy drinking, starting out sweeter, but drying out and becoming more bitter toward the end. Not bad.
2.4Bottle: Labeled as "Magic Hat Encore" at the time. Hazy orange-amber with some lighter yellow edges. Eggshell cap, foams up big but settles quickly. Light citrus peel hoppiness with some light white pepper & slightly herbaceous undertones. A touch of toasted biscuit & thick, bready malt. A little sweet. Grapefruit. Taste is more malt forward than expected; lots of toasted sweetbread, some caramel & Munich-type sweetness joins the back-end as well. Candied grapefruit, but finishes with a bitter pile of white pepper covered hop leaves. Overall, not a bad beer to get people into IPAs, but I’m not a huge fan of the heavy caramel blending with such a staunch, leafy bitterness. They clash, rather than balance each other.
2.8Bottle at home in Salisbury, CT. Pours clear, light gold with a foamy, white head. Sugary malts in the nose, bread, ripe orange. Medium sweet flavor with lots more bready malts, light pine and hints of tangy citrus. Light to medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Sweet on the finish with further bread, light leaves, more zippy citrus. Simple and a little odd.
3.2355 ml bottle as Magic Hat Encore. Rather clear deep orange body with a medium sized off-white head. Mild aroma of citric fruit and malt. Flavor is sweet malt, some caramel, citric fruit, a hint of pine and moderate bitterness. Does neither feel like a wheat or IPA, even not anything in-between. More like an APA, and actually a nice one. Smooth and easy drinkable.
3.3Bottle as Encore. Nose is very sweet with lemony citrus and wheat, pours orange-gold with a soapy beige head. Taste is strongly sweet, strongly tangy with firm medium bitterness, plenty of caramel and crystal, a little astringency running along the bottom, more citrus, light wheat smooth and scratch. Medium body is soft and refreshing, lightly crisp, slightly green hop effects. Absolutely serves its intended purpose, has an awesome quenching quality about its feel.
3.4bottle. golden with one finger head. mild body with solid hops with a good mix of citrus flavors and bitterness.
3.7Poured into a "pint glass". A nice half inch head at pouring, with a cloudy and soft copper colored body. This IPA has a very even flavor to it. Not too weak and piney. Far from hop-head heaven. Solid flavor. I’d do a session with this!
3.312oz bottle, interesting brew. Hoppy beginning, medium body, wheat finish. Not getting a hoppy finish like the description says but a complex brew at that. Definitely worth the try.
3.7Nice floral hop aroma and some Carmel like malt backbone. Taste is malty and on the sweet side. Sweet malt dominates. Hop balances a bit but still sweeter. Does have a bit of a bitter finish. Maybe a bit sticky on the palate. Very solid beer though for magic hat.
3.2Pours hazy orange into the glass, with a fully diminished head that leaves no lacing. The nose is of a muddy citrusy wheat. Flavors are of citrus, wheat, peel and zest, with a decent hop backing. The mouthfeel is semi-juicy, semi-active on the palate. A decent "Wheat IPA", I guess.
3.5From the sample pack. Pours a cloudy brown/orange with off white head, slight lacing. Smell is sticky sweet caramel with splashes of sweet citrus. Taste is similar, but it is rather balanced with medium bitterness. Run of the mill. Palate comes of a bit more creamy than a typical IPA (perhaps the wheat).
3.0Good for an IPA...mildly fruity, good flavor but also not too hoppy at all...ok for a beer in general but even better for an IPA x2
3.8Good beer... Started hoppy but misses the hoppy finish of a pacific northwest ipa
3.2Bottle at home. Pours hazy orange with a medium, creamy off-white head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is earthy and spicy wheat malt, herbal and spruce hops with citrus notes, apple and pear esters. Flavor is moderate hops and bitterness, light earthy and spicy wheat and cereal malt with fruity esters and a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.
3.0Encore. A hoppy wheat beer or a wheaty IPA? Either way, the hops overwhelm the weak body, and the wheat tang exacerbates the harshness of the hops. Lots of flavor - piney citrus - but my favorite flavor. Probably better in summer where it can refesh.
