3.2Second beer consumed in DADDY’S MYSTERY BOX - many thanks! 12 oz. bottle, "MORE DRINK MORE THINK" printed on bottom side of cap. How delightfully amusing. To oversized cognac snifter, it pours a rusty redwood with which a sudsy, ivory white head 1 and half fingers in length stood. Aromas of cedar bark, pine-scented Little Trees, spent grain, banana peppers (gosh, haven’t used that in a while), denim jeans, kumatoes, agave syrup, avocados, and rolling tobacco. Tastes much the same with the addition of sesame seeds, sourdough, and DME. Medicinal hops, shallots, and American yeast experienced by swallow, alongside a very mild spice characteristic resembling cinnamon and cardamom. Medium-bodied drinking. Pleasant. Would have again, even though it did not wow me.
3.1Magic hat has always been hit or miss for me. This one hits right in the middle. Not over the top but not a stand out. An okay beer from a good brewer
3.4This is a great rye. It's not shitty but the exact opposite. Enjoy it on a Sunday doing that thing and grilling brats.
3.5From a 33cl bottle, pours a hazy amber to brown color with an off-white head that disappeared fast only to leave a ring around the glass. Aroma of hops, pine, yeast and citrus. Flavors are pleasant, hops, toasted bread, herbs, malts, grains, caramel and toffee. Medium body, light sweetness and bitterness. Nice balance of many flavors making it quite interesting and enjoyable to drink.
2.4(bottle - 12 oz) Orange pour with a white head. Slightly sour grain and dry grass aroma with maybe a hint of wheat. Flavor is bitter and sour. Very cloyingly so. A bit of sweetness but the dry sour and bitter notes kind of ruin it.
3.8Very interesting. Piney astringent typical of ipa but more bitter nut base from the rye. Well matched to quiet spicy hops
3.1Specialty Grain? IPA? I’ll see when I enter this rating.
Ah - Specialty Grain. Funny how many wheat ales are getting into the IPA category now while the ryes are getting the boot.
This has an amber body, lots of bubbling, and a slender, creamy ecru head. It has an aroma of caramel and citrus fruit with quiet floral scents. The flavor is mainly about the caramelly malt. There’s also a light peppery sensation that lingers on the tongue. Midway through some citrus and zest flavors kick in along with a moderate bitterness. It finishes on a dry, softly bitter note. Not bad, but when I see "IPA" on a bottle, I’m always expecting more.
3.3(Bottle). Nice hazy amber complexion with thin head. Musky aroma. Flavor is rye forward balanced with piney hops.
3.6this was a pleasant surprise, hoppy and rye spicey body, bitter finish. Nicely done, had no idea this was going to be good.
3.6The appearance has a cloudy copper color with a large light tan head, and the aroma blends rye, diacetyl, caramel malts and resin, pine and floral hops. The taste is mildly bitter, slightly sour, and a touch sweet; the palate fuses a medium-full body, slick texture, average carbonation, and a long bitter finish.
4.0Bottle to shaker glass. Pours deep hazy amber/red, two finger off white head, moderate lacing. Aroma of dark fruits, pepper and caramel. Taste is snappy from the rye, nice resin bitterness, balanced sweetness from the grain bill. Medium body, slightly creamy, lightly carbonated. Finishes sweet up front then a long chewy bitterness. I like this one!
3.0Poured from 12oz bottle. Opening was tasty with a kick from the rye malts. Led to a beautiful marriage of hop bite. Ver nice take on the style.

3.9Bottle from Fresh and Easy: Poured a medium tea colored brown with tons of sediment floating as a thin layer of foam develops on top and will break down rather quickly. Aroma is subtle with minor scents of caramelized malts as well as bready rye malt with minimal hops detected under an IPA type of night. The taste is identical to the same type of characteristics that my nose detected but becomes more vibrant with the my tongue finding the very same flavors. This is quite possible the best Magic Hat beer I have tasted in the past 10 years and that is rather sad when considering the decisions they have made available in California. =/
4.1dark orange foggy pour , no hops aroma . malty taste with a late hops bitter flavor . I like it
3.0Tap. Pours clear light amber, medium off white head, good lacing. Aroma is light pine, gras, cardboard. Flavor is light sweet, medium bitter, sharp rye and grassy hay notes on top of pine. Medium body, a bit harsh
2.8Slightly hazy copper pour with an off-white head. Aromas of subtle citrus hops and earthy rye malt. Flavor is rye malts predominantly with light hop character. Decent but nothing special.
3.212oz bottle pours a hazy copper with an off-white head and nice lacing. Aromas of rye, nuts, toast, and malt. Flavor is mild bitter. Nice.
3.3This bills itself as a rye IPA but is really too dark and sweet to be an IPA. It is a brownish orange color, rather clear w/ a rather long lasting head of large to medium bubbles. The nose is of pine and earth w/ a bit of an herbal tinge. Flavor is yet more earthy but in a nice way that sort of reminds me of an exaggerated version of the hop character in a nice bitter. This is a bit on the sweet side which is generally not my thing but it works here due to the creamy texture, which I will presume is the result of the inclusion of rye in the grist. It finishes very mildly w/ a lingering sweetness and just a touch of bitterness. This isn’t a world beater but it’s a pretty tasty beer.
3.5The rye is there in the nose, with an underlying base of caramel. Pours a reddish-amber, with a quickly fading off-white head. The hops are there, and blend well with the rye, this isn’t on over the top IPA. Nice lingering bitterness on the finish, and a nice drinkable beer.
3.3Pours a finger of head on a hazy dark straw colored body.
The aroma is rye, musty lemon (in the best way) and earth.
The taste is mild rye at first, moderate lemon bitterness, then it ambles towards a muddled bitter finish.
The texture is crisp with soft edges.
An enjoyable IPA. The taste finish could have been a little more structured though.
3.2March 26, 2014. Bottle pours bright amber with lots of carbonation a small off-white head, lengthy retention and a fair amount of lacing. The aroma is firstly malt and rye as well as some citrus hops, and pepper. The taste is bitter, spicy, and peppery with some malts and rye. The mouthfeel is soft and fizzy. Palette is just short of hitting the mark for balancing the hops with the rye and spices, despite this being the best offering in the summer 12 pack.
3.212o bottle. cloudy dark amber, nice fluffy tan head. strong malty aroma, biting rye and hop taste, some spice, a little sweetness in the finish.
3.2Bottle. Nose lightly dank and diverse, some spaghetti sauce leading into earthy rye, dough with complementary malt, really pleasant hops. Pours deep orange-amber, a little dark, with a dense sudsy beige head. Taste is somewhat sweet, thin body with a tickle of alcohol showing, spices are there but small and curt, crisp with earthy caramel and pleasant light bitterness. The floral, almost perfumed character isn’t in-your-face but can drive this to being too sweet without a more aggressive bitterness for balance. There’s some good malt here, even if it’s brittle, and good balance, but the advice is definitely slow-going.
3.1Rated on 3-20-2014 (Bottle from Kroger’s in Fort Wayne, IN) This beer pours a small off-white head with a lengthy retention, amber body, extremely fizzy carbonation, fast rising carbonation, and a fair amount of lacing. The aroma is malt, rye, citrus hops, spicy, and peppery. The taste is bitter, light citrus hops, malty, rye, spicy, and peppery. The mouthfeel is soft lively and this beer is medium bodied. This beer is just okay tasting for me. The different flavors just did not come together all that well.
3.1Pours a a murky redish-orange. Has a strong malty aroma. Taste is very grainy with heavy malt, wheat, and some hops. A very earthy beer.
3.3Bottle from a variety pack poured into a pint glass. Dark amber to cooper with small white head. Taste is rye/wheat and malt with very light hops. It is smooth with good mouthfeel. A bit out of the ordinary for an IPA but not bad.
3.2At work: Pours copper with off-white head. Aroma is rye malts, mellow hoppy mixture, butterscotch, and fruitiness. Taste is pretty light. A tad bit spicy. Not too much bitterness. Really, it is not bad, but not particularly exceptional. It is a little different from other beers, which is nice.
2.7It's not horrible but it's not great either. Sweetish flavor with little to no aroma. For an IPA the hops are nonexistent
3.4Bottle from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours clear light copper with a slight beige head. Aroma is sort of spicy/herby. Med body or so. The rye is clearly present with spice, and there’s a sort of veg/herb along with it. It’s bitter in the finish, but I’m not getting much of the usual hop suspects. Herbal I guess.
