2.9Aroma of light cereal and toasted white bread, very faint caramel. Average yellow-orange color, still as water. Stoney mineral in the flavor with semi-sweet bready malt. Medium body with a cloying finish. Very average bock beer.
2.4Couldn’t find anything special about this beer. It’s a middle of the road Bock. The aroma and the taste made me believe that this beer was just a little off. It was not as dark as I’m used to from a bock and had a giant head that took forever to go down. It might have went bad sitting on the shelf. There wasn’t really any of the spices pr flavors that I associate with most Christmas beers in the states. But that may just be because it’s not a beer brewed in the states.
3.2Bottle. Decent bock. Lightish hop finish peeking out from the malt was a little surprising but maybe that’s due to being bottled? Nice blend of subtle flavors with no dominant one - nuts, chocolate, floral, spices - although I didn’t get much fruit, so again I’m thinking I need to try on tap, or in Bamberg.
3.3Solid beer. Pours dark amber with a thin head. The aroma is caramel and bread. The flavor is the same with a bit of hops to balance nicely. On tap at Schmidts in Philly.
3.412/12/2013. 500ml. bottle. Amber color with a short white head. Sweet fruity aromas with caramel. Light fruity flavors, caramel, spice and a light boozy finish,
3.3Finally got to try this one again (on tap) after my original botched bottle. Aroma: Caramel glazed bread with some spicy hop character. Appearance: Pale gold, mostly still pour with a foamy white head that settled into an ever present skin. Flavor: Bready up front like the nose, but really amps up the spicy hops toward the lingering, slightly bitter finish. Palate: Medium body, sticky texture, flat carbonation, bitter finish. Overall: Happy to have tried this one again; a well made beer in the style.
Aroma: Pumpernickel, sugar cookie, very malty with a touch of ointment. Appearance: Nearly still light copper with a film of bone head. Flavor: Woah. Meat fest. Sulfuric and borderline caustic. Has moments of pleasure, but those are fleeting. Palate: Medium body, creamy texture, flat carbonation, long, bitter finish. Overall: Very unpleasant.
3.3Bottle 50 cl. Courtesy of adnielsen. Pours a clear golden with a white head. Sweet malty nose - perhaps a tad oxidized. Solid malty body, sweet malty goodness with only a discreet hoppiness. Nice and solid - if unsophisticated. But a good one. 250313
3.3Tasted in 2010 (backlog). Dark brown in color with an average off-white head. Aroma is of light smoke, sausage, malt and light fruit. Taste is of malt, sausage and caramel.
2.9P: Crystal clear copper body with a thin layer of airy white bubbles that settle to a thin film. Slowly active bubbles climbing to the top.
S: Toasted caramel malt, yeast, cereal grains and dull spice.
T/M: Taset follows the nose with heavy malt, toast and earthy yeast. Apple peel hops with cinnamon and other spices balancing delicately on the palate. Light body with zesty carbonation. Finish is dry with timid bitter apple peel.
O: As a Christmas beer I feel lack of spice was really a downer. A good beer that is easy drinking and enjoyable but not a Christmas miracle. A solid offering none the less.
2.6Bottle. Light sour milk and grainy aroma., Clear gold with a large white head. Sweet grainy malt and spicy grassy flavor. Medium body.
3.5Bottle. Light honey and barley malt aroma. Pale yellow with small head. Lightly sweet barley malt and mild astringent alcohol flavor. Decent body. Not bad.
3.4Cloudy brown with a tall, off-white head.
Aroma of caramel malt, bread heel.
Taste is sweet, nutty, spiced....butter...
Rich flavour, creamy....woody, herbal bitter.
Earthy.
Quite tasty.
3.1Pours a dark straw color. The 1-finger rocky head lingers and dissipates to a lacy foam. There’s very little cling to the glass. The aroma is very subtle--muted malt, grass, and banana. Very little hop aroma. It has a creamy, sweet up-front flavor with hints of fruit, grass, and a whisper of cinnamon. Decent mouthfeel, smooth, with light carbonation. The finish has a slight hop bite that offsets flavors citrus, butter and ginger. The 6% ABV provides a bit of warmth. Overall, a nicely balanced brew. There are many better Christmas ales out there, but this one is definitely worth a try.
3.216.9oz. bottle: This one pours a darker, clear caramel color. There was a very small tan head that didn’t linger long or leave any lacing. The aroma is OK. Caramel malts, hints of biscuit, subtle fruits, some earthy hops and maybe a hint of spices. The taste is OK. Some caramel malt sweetness with a hint of spices. Mild earthy hops. Maybe a hint of breadiness. Decent enough, but I’m glad it was on sale. Don’t think it was worth the original $5.99/bottle.
3.3Poured this beer from the bottle into a trumpet style glass to drink. The beer had a fairly cloudy light and faint amber-brown color with an average-sized foamy white head that had low retention, but average cling and lacing. The aroma featured a fruit and floral blend with light notes of raisin and fig, along with touches of malt, earth, and pine, and a bit of yeast. It had a sour-sweet blended fruity taste with touches of raisin and notes of caramel, along with a light yeast component. The beer was fairly creamy and wet with low-to-average carbonation, and was a touch on the thin side, with a lighter, slightly watery, mouthfeel.
3.116.9oz bottle, shared with my sister. An "07" is stamped on the back of the bottle... I hope that doesn’t mean what I think it means. Mildly hazy yellow orange color. Thin white head. Decent lace. Medium body. Smooth lighter carbonation. Really malty aroma, light on the spice. Kinda musty, but not bad after you get accustomed to it a bit (I’ve never had a "Christmas bock", I wasn’t sure what to expect here). Texture is almost kind of creamy after a bit, it’s pretty nice. Savory taste, light bitter. My sister said she wished it was a little richer. But this is it’s own type of thing, I enjoyed my portion
3.7Shared on birthday with Ralf the German. .5L bottle. We began by singing the German National Anthem (all verses). Malt forward and sweet, this beer provided the baseline feeling for the imperial stout brew session. Warming the beer nose became increasingly nutty. Splendid gentle sweet earthy finish.
3.1Originally rated February 2005. Poured a cloudy beige-orange colour with a bubbly foam white head. The lacing was very good. Aromas were of sweet malt and grain. Taste started very sharp and strong, then went to a fruity middle with pears, and then finished in a weird smooth and bitter aftertaste. Not really impressed with this one.
3.4Aroma is malty and very nutty. The flavor is almost a mix of an altbier and a heller bock, being very nutty, malty and having a noticeable fruit flavor. It was interesting but the nuttiness was a bit overpowering.
3.1Bottle. Pours golden yellow with a big foamy white head. Aroma of caramel, brown sugar, and had some notes of toffee. Flavor was lightly sweet and malty with grains, caramel, bread, toffee and a touch of honey.
3.202/09 Pours lighter honey brown with off white head. Aromas of toasted grain with a light sweetness. Taste is musty and on the bitter pale side with a lingering dryness. It is like a lighter Bock mixed with a pale ale. Enjoyable, simple, and more dry and lighter that expected.
1.8A somewhat cloudy golden color with a white head. Intense aroma of cider, apple juice, and cardboard. There is a touch of spice to it and a strong sweetness. The flavor is no better. Lots of cardboard and paper with a green apple flavor, a touch of cider, and sugar. Not really even much in the way of malt flavor to be found here. Thin and watery to boot.
3.1Ar: Sweet floral malt, some crackers and wet dough.
Ap: Clear golden-orange - small white head with moderate-low retention and a touch of lacing.
T: Rich and sweet crackers - honey and perfume - low bitterness - moderately long malty-clean finish.
P: Medium body with medium-high carbonation - finish is medium-dry.
O: Solid pale bock - nice honey and pils malt flavors.
3.2Location/Date:Bottle on January 27th, 2012.
Appearance: Pours a light opaque orange.
Aroma: Aroma is bready, with some doughy yeast.
Taste: Light bitterness, some sweetness on the back end, lightly sour.
Palate:Medium light body, slick, lively carbonation.
Summary: Decent german beer to stay warm in the winter, but something with the yeast is bothering me.
3.2Bottle. Light to moderate of dark bread, light herbs for the hops, with toffee, honey, brown sugar and cola. Head is small to average size, fizzy, off-white with no lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is clear medium brown. Flavor starts lightly sweet and lightly to moderately acidic, then finishes faintly sweet and acidic and lightly to moderately bitter. Palate is medium, watery witha lively carbonation. The aroma is a little bland but the flavor is full of dark Heller Bock sweetness and fullness.
3.819 Jan 2012, bottle. light yellow, clear, some steady bubbles, foamy thin head. fermented sweet hay, a tad meaty. intriguing. thin and crisp. really nice! some faint orange wheat flavors, a twinge of chocolate, some bitter finish. this is a great heller bock!
4.0Bottle. Pours a dark amber with a medium-sized off-white head that dissipates slowly. Aroma is bready with lots of caramel, a bit of fruit, and some floral notes. Flavor is doughy/bready, caramel, toffee, some fruit. Has a long, lingering sweet and doughy finish -- sort of like candied bread. Has a slightly thick, almost chewy mouthfeel. A great bock.
3.0Bottle. Poured a golden color with a small sized head. Earthy, leaves, with caramel and some nuts.
2.7Draft. Dark clear amber color, massive beige head. Very sweet, very light body. Uninspiring.
2.9Tap at Churchkey thanks to Travlr. Pours a clear red to deeper amber with a larger tan head. Thicker lace. Nose is super sweet. Mild candies and pine needle bitter. Hints of margarine. Taste is blander with tannic apple skins and tannic grain. Sharper mouthfeel.
