Maine Beer Zoe

On a rainy fall day in 2009, my five-year-old daughter Zoe and I were wandering the streets of Bar Harbor and stumbled across the Whale Museum. Zoe loved it. Hopefully we do the same for you. Cheers! Our Happy, Hoppy, Amber-Ale.

4.1 Hoppy yet has some deep carmel. Vanilla and a little bit of nut. Lingers with a slightly bitter aftertaste.
3.7 From the backlog - bottle, draft, you name it. Pours dark amber, beige head. Pine, deep malts, caramel, toffee, citrus, wood. Great.
3.8 Amber to light brown appearance with a lacy tan head. Aroma of toasted malt, caramel, mild pine, dark fruits, light chocolaty notes and light citrus zest. Similar flavor, malt-forward with moderate sweetness and a mild bittering balance. Medium body with a smooth feel and an enjoyable finish. Nicely done.
3.8 28Apr2019 Bitter grain and cereal malts, wet straw, wet leaves, floral notes. Hazy brown, medium, creamy, off-white head. Light bitter. Bittersweet grain and cereal malts, bread, straw, hay, light caramel and biscuit, soft carbonation, medium bodied. Very nice. Bottle from Craft + Carry.
3.9 500ml bottle at home. Pours dark reddish amber with a chunky off white head and lots of lacing. Fresh rye toast, caramel, citrus, moderate hoppy bite. Soft carb, smooth texture. Refreshing citrus and bread finish. Well made - balanced and delicious.
3.9 (Bottle) Cloudy chestnut body with a large beige head that recedes into frothy peaks and light lace on the glass. Aroma is mildly sweet malt, caramel; some hops and citrus; woody notes. Medium body, oily mouthfeel; light soft carbonation. Flavor is moderately sweet and bitter in equal parts; nice malt profile.
3.3 Cloudy copper, covering lace. Medium body, flavorful, smooth texture, refreshing mouthfeel, nice carbonation and heat, good length. Very crisp, moderately bitter, dry. Hoppy, grapefruit, greens, caramel. Good personality.
3.5 Caramel, citrus and some chocolate in nose. Pours amber with white head. Taste is medium dry with burnt caramel, citrus, herbs and chocolate. Low bitter finish, soft carbo. Overall good beer, on tap at source.
3.2 Pours an amber color with an antique white head. Malty, nutty, fruity nose. A bit of a lively mouthfeel. Fig, cola, and pine flavors. Finishes with a spearmint.
3.9 On tap at the brewery. It poured an amber color with an off-white head. The aroma was of pine, citrus, nuts and toast. The taste was similar to the aroma with more pine, citrus, nuts, toast with medium carbonation and a nice smooth aftertaste. Good stuff.
4.0 500 mL bottle poured. Much thanks to Jow for this bottle. Always a pleasure to try a top 50 beer in any style. Even cooler to try the number one. Didn't get this cracked within the suggested 90 days, but it wasn't possible. Besides, it's still amazing, and quintessential for the style. Copper, amber pour, slight glow. Beige foam head that lasts. Bready malts, some caramel. Cool flavor, light body, but extremely flavorful. Low bitter hops, balanced nicely with the malt. Really good Amber here, and probably the best one I've had. Deserves to be number one I suppose. Tasty!
3.9 Bottle. Poured hazy dark amber color with an average to large frothy off-white head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy complex hop aroma. Medium to full body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. My expectations were met with a solid brew.
3.8 piney, light citrusy aromas. dark amber/red in color with massive long lasting head. taste is well balanced. nice underlying malt background with pine, light citrus and resin notes
4.0 500 ml bottle. Radiant copper red color. Huge frothy beige head. Fragrant, toasted malt nose. Notes of caramel, butterscotch, roasted pecans and earthy hops. Toasted malt flavor. Earthy, rich, nutty notes. Slightly toasty, with notes of Demerara sugar and golden raisins. Quite nice. Thanks, Zoe.
3.2 On tap at brewery. Pours an amber, reddish-brown with a small off-white head. Aroma is floral hops, toffee, grapefruit, light earth, and a little something tropical. Taste is very hoppy; toffee, earth, some caramel, coffee, pine, and some toast. Medium body. Medium carbonation. Crisp mouthfeel - although a little too heavy for the style.
4.0 Could of sworn I had rated this?, guess not, bottled 10/10, superfresh, pours a darker than anticipated amber, red color with solid frothy 1 finger head that stands for a while, nose is sweet, malt forward with some dark fruit, mouthfeel is familiar red ale, but unlike most of the style, full of flavor and intensity, I really don't like red ales, but this is worthy..solid
3.6 Sampler at All Purpose Pizzeria 4-10-17
3.8 Deep amber color. Aroma is malt forward, caramel light chocolate and nuts but is also hoppy with pine and sticky spicy hops that assert themselves a little more in the flavor. Prickly with a moderate bitterness. Good red.
4.0 Dégustée au printemps 2015 (de mes notes sur mobile). .
3.7 Bottle, Market Street Wine Shop Downtown. Pours brown with a soft beige-tan head. Aroma is floral hops, pine, caramel, honey, resin. Flavor is toasted caramel malt, herbal notes, caramel malt, pine, slight coffee, slight chocolate. Very nice indeed.
4.4 Pours a dark rustic/copper amber (one of the darkest amber ales I’ve seen). Piny and floral scent with dark/tropical fruits. Taste: orange, lemon and grapefruit zest with hints of oak and black cherries. Malty at first, with a hoppy after bite. Very well balanced.
2.9 Bottle (May 7, 2019 bottling) Head is initially average sized, frothy, off-white to light brown, mostly lasting. Body is dark amber. Aroma is moderately malty (graham cracker, toasted wheat bread), lightly to moderately hoppy (resin, grapefruit), with notes of black tea, souring fruit (spoiled OJ, etc.). Flavor is moderately sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic. Striking sourness is undesirable for the style (seems consistent, as my first rating in 2017 had this same problem then too...the aroma even suggests it), and the aroma is dull but ok. Looks nice but otherwise not that good.
4.5 Biscuit!
3.6 500ml bottle from the Beer Cabin in Plattsburgh, NY. Bottled in late March. Nice roasted malt aroma with hints of maple sweetness. Light coffee and toasted notes. Light grassy hops. Hazy ruddy amber colored body with a medium light tan head. Starts with a grassy and herbal bitter hop flavor. Fair caramel malts in the middle, but then more bitterness comes in the finish. Quite hoppy. Malts are readily present in the nose, but hops seem to dominate.
3.7 500 ml bottle. Clear deep amber color (almost brown actually). Rocky off white head with good retention and lacing. Aroma’s: resinous hops, dark malts, light roast. Retronasal it’s fruity hops, sourish, caramel. Flavor is moderate to full bitter with loght toast - hardly any sweetness. Medium bodied. Finishes slightly dry, reasonably bitter.
4.4 Picked this one up after really enjoying Maine Beer Co.’s MO last week. This one is another example of this brewery getting away with deservedly charging 7-8 bucks for a 16.9 oz bottle. It is quite simply the best amber ale type thing ever; although classified as such, it seems in a class all itself. It has a robust rich piney divine smell to it and looks like a fuzzy red panda. It tastes like a resiny malty vision from on high blasting you with hoppy goodness and a brown backbone. I’m granting this an elusive 4.4. Good for lazy Saturdays with too cold baths and disco jams.
3.6 A zesty caramel and spice aroma.. A cloudy brown body topped with a light tan head about an inch thick to start. Crisp roasted malt with a hint of caramel. Has a hint of bitterness with a medium bodied feel.
3.7 Bottle shared. Hazy amber with big beige head. Light roasted malts with a bit of a cocoa touch, grass after some rain, orange peel, caramel, dried apricot, kumquat. Medium sweet and bitter. Bit over medium bodied with great creamy carbonation. Nice!
3.9 On tap at SLL tasting and 500ml bottle. Pours a crystal clear dark amber with an light tan head and sticky lacing. Smell is dark dried fruit, citrus, pine and cocoa with biscuit malt aromas. Taste is raisin, citrus fruit, pine resin and dark chocolate with biscuit malt flavors. Feel is medium in body with a smooth clean finish.
3.8 500 ml bottle from notes. Pours a clear, deep amber color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have caramel malts, lightly toasted, grapefruit citrus, resin, some earthy notes, herbal, solid hoppy amber.
