Marin Eldridge Grade White Knuckle Double IPA

Marin Eldridge Grade White Knuckle Double IPA

"White Knuckle Ale" is a Double India Pale Ale. That’s right, twice the malt and twice the hops in one 14 barrel batch. It is named in honor of the exciting bike trail on Mt. Tam. If you are a "hophead", this one’s for you; fat, chewy, resiny and pungent! Pour into a wide-mouthed glass and get ready to rip!

3.4 This poured a lightly murky orange with an off white head. Aroma was of caramel, lemon, grassy and booze. Flavor was similar, old school dipa, caramel and boozy with bitter but not very bright hops.
3.4 651mL for $10 at El Cerrito Liquor, Corona, CA. Pours low haze, deep orange amber with medium beige foam. Nice, sheets of lacing. Nose is a very interesting mix of vanilla bean, orange peel potpourri, toffee, salted caramel. Taste is not very good, possibly heat damaged or not fresh even though it just arrived in the liquor store two days ago. Disappointing: nutty, abrasive walnut skin, harsh, biting bitterness. Chalky, dusty, dry mouthfeel. Not soft, hoppy, or juicy. Eh.
4.2 On tap at Taps in Petaluma. Pours an amber color without much head. Huge hop flavors that linger.
3.8 Draft at Hamilton’s tavern. Pours apricot with a half inch of white foam. Bug floral notes on the nose. Lots of grapefruit on the tongue. Has a bit of sweetness in the tongue. It’s almost like a pine cone covered in sugar. Solid!
3.8 On tap at Church Key, SF. Hazy dark orange with a fluffy white head. Aroma is brimming with pine. Plenty more pine and floral notes in the taste, which packs a nice bitter bite. I’d be hard pressed to say what distinguished it from other good DIPAs, but everything was to my liking.
3.7 Tap at Marin. Orange golden pour with a spotty white head. Thick and resiny, lots of caramel as well. Finishes easy for such a big beer.
4.2 22 oz. bottle, sent from Neillago (thanks a lot, Neil), pours a cloudy dark orange amber with a small off-white head. Aroma of rich resinous hops, a little grapefruit and big caramel malts - wonderful nose. Flavour is extremely well-balanced, with loads of resinous hops, grapefruit, a little citrus and a big fat caramel malt backing. Extremely full-bodied, without any astringency despite being very hoppy. The malt backing is perfectly situated without contributing much sweetness. This is highly drinkable and delectable. A most excellent IIPA.
4.1 Pours amber with low off white head Aromas of caramel, passionfruits, citrusy fruits! Lovely! Taste loads of caramel and hoppy fruityness. Greatly balanced palate with a medium body, medium bitterness and sweetness
3.6 Curious about the brewed on date for this one. Deep peach skin amber with one finger of sandy tan head. Nose is rich and malty with a predominantly resinous and oily hop character. Notes of citrus rind and spicy hops show as well. The singularity and lack of hop complexity leads me to believe this is not very fresh. Malt forward flavor, tastes like an American BW. Caramel malt and burnt sugar with some citrus rind and oxidized hops. Medium full body and lingering burnt sugar on the finish.
3.8 On tap at the brewery. Aroma is fantastic, floral and fruit hops. Nice head, great lacing, very clear orange colour. Flavour is also delicious. Very hoppy! Finishes thick and oily. Slightly dry. This is a fantastic IIPA
4.3 Bomber sent to me from Randy in Arizona. Pours a slightly cloudy amber-orange color with a small foamy head that lingers a bit, leaves a little webbing. Aroma is great. Musty, wet grass, pine, mandarin oranges, tropical fruit, flowers, and light caramel. Taste has a complex hop taste as well mixed with a nice caramel malt backbone. At times, it tastes like caramel covered fruit. Tropical fruit stands out the most here but lots of oranges, pine, and flowers too. Moderate sweetness with a very strong bitterness, especially in the finish. Very oily mouthfeel which I love, medium to thick body. I wish there was a bit less bitterness, it overpowers at times. But it’s still a great DIPA, would love to trade for more.
3.4 Bottle, copper color with medium white head, notes of booze, heavy malt, almost peat, tons of fire for 8 percent. Flavors of Caramel malts, pine, cherry, and spicy hops. I don’t know if this was old or just boozey. Very oily palate. Kind of like double simcoe but sweeter and more heat.
4.3 Beautiful imperial. Deep copper colored pour with a slightly off-white head. Floral aroma is abundant and inviting. Taste is superb: malty backbone giving way to hoppiness: bitter, but balanced, with pine hop notes and just the right amount of resin for taste and mouthfeel -- no unwelcoming aftertaste, either. The Marin folks are doing it right; recommended!
3.8 Draft @ 13th Bistro Double IPA Festival, Hayward, CA. Pours an orange amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty hoppy piney citrus and tropical aroma. Fruity malty hoppy bitter piney citrus flavor. Has a fruity malty hoppy bitter piney citrus finish.
3.9 In short: A caramelized and resinous fruity/piney big IPA. A typical American Double IPA of superior quality. Very good. How: Bottle 22oz. consumed very fresh, a week or two after being purchase directly at the brewpub. Tasting session with Montreal friends. The look: Clear dark golden topped by a very small beige head. In long: Nose is bursting with fruity resinous hops, some piney notes and some caramel hiding in the back. Taste has a lot of very toasted caramelized malts, bread crust covered by caramel, medium sweetness sensation. Simple but very effective malt backbone. Then comes of the hops, and then some more, citrusy and a bit piney, very resinous, bitterness level is quite high. Supposed to be the same beer has Marin I.P.A. double everything, I don’t doubt that it is the case but I found the White Knuckle to be much more resinous and sticky than its little sister. A superior Double IPA nonetheless but I slightly preferred smaller regular IPA. A very nice IPA shared at beer tasting with other beer enthusiats, before joining ratebeer I thought beer geeks were just as pathetic as Trekkies, but this has all changed since I joined ratebeer and became part of the community, no longer do I think beer geeks are as pathetic as Trekkies, I am now convinced we are.
3.7 Amber pour with tons of tropical fruit and a very yeasty edge to the nose. The rest of my notes are completely indecipherable.
4.2 Pours a amber orange with a one finger off white head and some nice lacing. Aroma is of citrus peels, resinous pine, weed, tropical fruits, and some sweet malts. Taste is of juicy citrus, pine, tropical fruits, fresh cut grass, weed, sweet malts, and a little caramel malt. Has a medium-full body with super creamy, oily, chewy mouthfeel and a dry, effervescent, bitter, long, refreshing finish. Overall, a excellent, well balanced DIPA.
3.9 has sediment in it and an orange colour. Yeasty aroma, with a real honey note as well as hops, resin and a hint of apricot. Earthy flavours and a hops, resin with a bitter finish.
3.9 On tap at Best of the Bay. Aroma and flavor is full hop without the bitterness...Cuties, oranges, and sugared Meyer lemon. Really impressed by this, especially since I've seen bottles about a hundred times. Great beer.
4.6 On tap at the brewery. Aroma is fantastic, floral and fruit hops. Nice head, great lacing, very clear orange colour. Flavour is also delicious. Very hoppy! Finishes thick and oily. Slightly dry. This is a fantastic dipa!
4.1 Bomber into glass, pours brownish orange..thin white head.. Pine taste good hopps, cant point out the aroma, some citrus and cardboard, weird, may be the glass.. love it, aroma doesnt match the taste unless its me, bad ass dbl ipa overall tho!
4.1 22oz bomber. Aroma is pungent and hoppy. Color is dark copper with off white head. Taste is malty with a pine finish.
4.0 Bottle. Pours clear amber with a large beige head that leaves great lacing. Aroma is citrus, pine, grapefruit. Flavor is the same with some caramel notes. Light sweetness and medium bitterness through into the finish. Medium bodied. Quite a nice beer.
4.1 Dark orange, copperish, pour from bomber. Bubbly off white head. Really spicy aroma. This is a huge IPA. Very hoppy, bitter, but well put together. Spicy and sweet taste, grapefruit and earthy notes
4.1 Orange, sticky, huge hops. Love the full mouth feel. Semi-sweet malt backbone, but the hops are on showcase for sure.
4.1 Great citrus/grapefruit and pine scents. Taste is similar, great mouth and one of the best finishes for the style.
4.2 On tap at The Scratch. Looks solid in the glass with a deep amber colour and an even layer of foam. Hops and more hops in the aroma and this carries over into the flavour. Not over the top in the hops department. Well balanced with a long dry finish.
3.8 Draught @ City Beer, San Francisco Pours dark orange with a foamy head. Massive hoppy aroma with malty notes, pine and grass. Taste is malty and sweetish with hoppy notes, pine grass and lemon. Finish is sweetish and hoppy with piney notes. Okay, quite tasty but slightly unbalanced IIPA
3.9 Bottle from a trade with cbkschubert. Pours cloudy dark orange color with off white head. Aromas of citrus and pine. Citrus and pine flavors with lots of bitterness and sweet caramel maltiness. Medium to full body with moderate carbonation and a sticky mouthfeel. Thanks Craig.
3.9 Golden brown with an off white head, a little bit of lacing, Aroma w/ some caramel malts, citrus, and a little pine. Malty, hoppy, with a little grapefruit flavor...a really good DIPA..I’m definitely a fan.
