Maui Aloha B’ak’tun

Maui Aloha B’ak’tun

Sure.. the scientists have published essays, the philosophers poems, the naysayers flyers.. but here at the center of the Maui Brewing micro-verse, we are publishing the ultimate in doomsday aloha – this year’s last canned seasonal, Aloha B’ak’tun! The word aloha conveys both greeting and goodbye in the Hawaiian language and B’ak’tun refers to the 3000+year cycle of the Mayan Calendar which is ending. This apocalyptic Belgian-style stout is brewed with Hawaiian chocolate, locally-grown chipotle chilies and cinnamon spice.

3.4 Can, Cave, Glasgow. Poured a dark brown colour with with a medium tan head. Nose was chocolate, roast, cinnamon. Roasted malts, dark fruit, more choc, and spices present in the flavour. Quite lively carbonation. A little on the thin side for a stout. Drinkable and not without some character but ultimately a bit underwhelming.
3.6 Can poured a back hue w/ big fizzy tan head fully diminishing. Big chocolate aroma. Initial flavor is moderate sweet with a moderate bitter finish of short duration. Tastes are roasted malts, chocolate, bold roast coffee, cinnamon, clove, and a light heat of chipotle after the finish. Full bodied, soft carbonation, light syrupy mouthfeel, and light warmth in the finish.
3.4 355ml can from Ales by Mail Pours pitch black with a large thick foamy brown head. Aroma of roasty malts, spices, hints of ash, cocoa and dark chocolate. Taste is smooth, sweetish, slightly roasty and spicy with a touch of cocoa, cinnamon and yeast. Finish is smooth, sweetish and slightly ashy with hints of roastiness and spices. Decent, a bit unbalanced spicy stout.
3.0 Pours a frothy brown head atop an opaque body. Nose of rich chocolate and water coffee. Something fruity, cocoa and chili in the finish. Can. Purchased at Liquor Plus University Heights for around $4.
3.4 Near black pour with tan head. Aroma is chocolate chip cookie dough, licorice. Flavour has dark chocolate, licorice, and on the finish some pepper and cinnamon spice. Little bit of Belgian influence. Nice blend.
3.3 12 oz can. From alesbymail.co.uk. Black colour with a small tan head. Roasted malt, berries, vinegar, mild sweetness and mild bitterness in the aroma. The flavour is roasted malt, mild vegetables, dark chocolate, mild bitterness and mild ashy dryness. Quite drinkable but I was expecting more chili flavour.
4.0 Can. Pours a dark black pour with a foamy rapidly dissipating java colored head. Nose is malt with chocolate and cinnamon. Taste is rich chocolate, creamy with some peppery spice. Finishes on chocolate malty peppery notes, with moderate lingering. Nice. Quaff Score 8 / 10

3.4 Can. Couldn’t get my mouth around the name so I just called it "Hakuna Matata". hope that’s ok. Pours black, tan head. Nose is licorice, spicy pepper, dark chocolate. Flavour has a bit of dusty coffee, choc, pepper comes through on the finish but not too spicy at all, smooth mouthfeel (which seems a given for all stouts poured from cans). Nice, these guys do non-traditional ingredients quite well imho.
3.5 Black pour with a thin kahki head. Nose is a bit spicy and chocolaty--not spicy like heat, but like earthy cinnamon and herbal tones, with some raw cocao nibbs and a bit of roast. The flavor is a bit light but the body is mostly full, good roasted barley tones with a mild chocolaty sweetness, ending with a touch of earthy notes and some cinnamon. Not too keen on it overall, it’s chocolaty but earthy-bitter.
3.9 From a can into a pint glass, Pretty much black, very nice dense light tan head. Toffee and dark roast aroma with milk chocolate notes. Mainly straight forward light moderate roast flavors. Light bodied and a touch metallic at the end. Doesn’t taste as big as %7.
3.5 12/26/2013. From can. Black with a beige head. Roasted malt aromas with spices and chocolate. Flavors are rich, bitter, but with some acidity that throws it off balance.
3.6 Brown color, tan head. Cocoa powder, chili peppers, roasted malt, some roasted nuts, burned toast. Nice beer but needs to pack a bigger punch IMO.
3.8 Can in the Head of Steam, Durham. Black body with fading tan head. Huge chocolate coffee aroma. Vary dry and bitter with lots of coffee and dark chocolate and a burnt toast finish. Nice but lacking something.
3.2 Chocolate nose. Creamy tan head. Sips sweet chocolate. Middle has Chipotle pepper and sweetness, which to my surprise isn’t working well. Full body throughout. Milky cocoa in the finish.
3.6 Nice earthy chocolate aroma and pours a fairly deep tan brown head. Medium bodied and sort of borders on the close to silky. Black. Head deteriorates over time. Nothing complex but some depths and pretty enjoyable considering I drank it relatively cold. If I lived in Maui I’d be pretty tickled that this brewery was near by.
3.5 Deep black body with a bubbling, vanishing offwhite head. Complex aroma, a bit spicy. Taste is sweet, chocolate, cinnamon, vanilla. Soft body, soft carbonation
3.9 12oz can. It pours a dark brown color with a large mocha head. Aroma is roasted malts chocolate, dates and some herbal notes. Taste is dark chocolate, malt and light spices. Some dark fruits and bitterness with a semi-dry finish. Medium body and carbonation. Very good
