Maui Big Swell IPA

Maui Big Swell IPA

India Pale Ale was developed in Burton, England, as a "Super-Premium"
hoppy pale ale around 1800. The extra strength in alcohol and hops helped preserve the beer on its
long export journeys to India and beyond. The style developed a following worldwide. Its flavor begins
with a smooth, malty creaminess followed with a big burst of dry-hop flavor from English Kent Golding
Hops. It then finishes with a lingering yet pleasant bitterness.

Big Swell IPA is a fresh handcrafted India Pale Ale brewed with huge amounts of American hops and malted barley...dry hopped to perfection!

3.6 This is a backlog rating from 2012 from a can (multiple times), from notes. When I had this beer it was average to below average for the style and not something I wanted to have again or I just didn't get back to my notes because of my technology at the time, work and/or family. Words to describe this beer are pale malts, citrus, dank, floral hops, good.
3.7 Clear gold color poured with a white head. The aroma is malty with a nice caramel note along with the hoppiness of grapefruit in the taste. Nice.
3.4 From a can poured a slightly hazy golden-amber with 2cm of off-white dense foam that retained very well and laced very well. Carbonation high, lively and very fine to fine. Aroma moderately strong of grapefruit and pine. Taste of lots of grapefruit (both fruity and zest) and resinous pine with hints of tropical fruit (pineapple); moderate to strong hoppy bitterness; a 'typical' pre-hazy-style IPA. Medium body. Smooth, crisp, clean and slightly dry with a lingering finish.
1.1 $2 can from vintage estate. A slightly deeper yellow than pale. Big foam y head, more than half of glass is foam, even with a gentle pour. Head goes craggy, unrelenting. Smell is typical rough volatile IPA. First tate is all IPA, bitter nasty resinous mouth coating chewing on green grapefruit rinds mixed with pine tar. What else can be said? Its just another of a million typically ubiquitous IPA that treads into double imperial IPA territory. IPA, the beer with a preservative in it. Rude mah-fah.
3.7 Can in Maui pour avg gold with moderate white head. Nose dank, citrus zest, soap. Taste moderate bitter up front, then flavors from the nose. Of course, the setting helps.
3.9 Pineapple, passionfruit aromas. Tropical fruit flavours, then a big resiny bitterness hit, maybe a bit much. Punchy. Solid.
3.3 Can. Pours lightly hazy golden, large fluffy white head, good lacing. Aroma is pine, grapefruit, orange and a bit of dust. Flavor is light sweet, medium bitter. Medium body. Decent
4.2 Very nice tropical IPA. Smooth with citrusy hops. Good for summer
3.0 4-27-19, 6-pk from ABC Store, Lahaina, Maui
3.2 24-Nov-08 (12-oz can: Purchased 15-Oct-08 for $2.29 at South Bay Drugs and Liquor in Imperial Beach, CA) Hazy, dark-amber in the glass with a frail, wafer-thin head that is off-white in color and quick to dissipate to a thin ring and light dusting. The nose offers gently piney hops and a pale malt backing, but the beer lacks the intensity you might expect from an IPA. The smooth, lightly flavored hops add a nice dryness, but the slightly toasty malts are also on the sweet side. Light in carbonation, medium in body, smooth and easy drinking. Overall, the beer does have nice flavor and excellent balance, but it definitely leaves one with the impression that this is an IPA on training wheels. A good choice for people looking to try an IPA for the first time, someone who doesn't like the West Coast style, or someone who is simply in the mood for an easy drinking hoppy beer.
4.0 12 oz can from a six pack from Tsunami Taproom in Salem OR $10 six. Pours the traditional deep orange coloured body with a huge thick and creamy off white head. Aromas a bit subdued but of mango, papaya ,with a bit of peach skin..nice. Taste similar and very well balanced,,but nice hop bite towards the end. Mouth feel is very nice medium to medium heavy and with nice medium carbonation..semi dry finish. A good traditional IPA
3.5 Wonderful hop aroma. A massive amount of hops went in after the boil. Bitterness skews a bit high. Palette is a bit oddly sticky. The good and the bad of getting carried away with the hops.
3.7 It pours clear golden with a white head. It has a medium body with lots of semi soft carbonation. The taste has lots of grapefruit, pale malt, resin and less of pith. Very tasty.
3.6 Złote i klarowne, piany sporo. Zapach słodkawy, mandarynkowy głównie. Smak podobnie, ze sporą goryczką ujawniającą się na finiszu. Dobre.
3.7 Draft at Paia Fish Market. Pours clear gold with a thin, fizzy head. Tastes like juicy grapefruit hops, light caramel and bready malt, and some grass. Light body and medium carbonation. Smells like grapefruit hops, light caramel, and grassy malt.
3.5 Maui, Hawaii. 6.8%. Good refreshing IPA from Maui. Not overpowering, hoppy aftertaste. Ian
3.6 Pours cloudy golden orange, nice foamy and thick head. Aroma is vert mild, citrous, orange, tropical and pine. Taste is pleasant, hoppy, zesty, pine, bitter, citrous with big malty backbone.
3.5 355ml can on 14th July 2018, sat in my brothers front garden while taking in the afternoon sun down in Devon. Lager like in appearance, clear golden with a fast fading white head. Citrus/tropical fruits rule the aroma and taste, very hop centric throughout.
3.8 The most bitter beer in Hawaii. This is a true ipa with a hoppy bitter finish.
3.8 Grapefruit aroma, clear golden brown color, medium palate, malty balance, cites hop flavor, lemon, lime
3.4 Refrigerated 12 oz. aluminum can, canned on August 4, 2017, poured into a glass at WOB Baltimore. Hazy golden with medium white head. Aroma is herbal hops/citrus hops, medium body, and good small-bubble lacing. Taste is herbal hops, some citrus hops, and bitter finish. A ten month old IPA was not what I had in mind, but the beer was not that bad.
3.8 355ml can Hazy light amber with OK head. Tropical and citrus hop aroma with underlying malt. Subdued bitterness with malt loitering behind it. Nice enough IPA.
3.7 Golden with a white head - Tropical fruity hop aroma - Malt body with a hop that has citrus and tropical fruity flavours with good bitterness - The hops with citrus, topical flavours and bitterness goes into the finish - This was good
3.4 Pours a pale gold with decent head and lacing. Aroma is malty with butterscotch and grassy pine. Taste is malt forward and well balanced by a quick hop finish. A few years ago this would have been a super solid IPA for me, but I've changed and a well-balanced IPA isn't what I'm after. Drinkable and unoffensive, but wouldn't age well.
4.0 12-ounce can purchased while on vacation on Kauai. Pours clear yellow-gold with 1" soap bubble off-white head and lacing. Aroma: citrus, tropical fruits, pine. Flavor: pineapple, grapefruit, mango, honey, pine. Mouthfeel: medium-bodied.
3.6 can - Pours orange with an off-white head. The hop led aroma is of citrus and pine. The flavor is bitter with resin and citrus notes and a solid underlying malt. Medium bodied. Quite nice.
3.9 Warm gold pour, quick white head with some lace too boot. Nose is pine resin. Bitter. Middle is splash of marmalade, medium kilned malt, oily coating to the tongue. Finish has a burst of citrus sweetness, balanced by that persistent woody bitterness. Balanced and enjoyable offering.
3.7 10/15/17. 12oz can thanks to cbfobes! Orange pour with a small khaki head. Nice aroma, citrus, earthy, hints of pine. Good flavor, clean, light maltiness, citrus, earthy. Tasty.
4.1 First had this in a can in London, now I'm drinking it from a can in Hawaii. The draft here seems to be dominated by kona. Great brew. Bitter, hoppy, fruity. Fantastic.
3.7 0,3 litre Can from Total Wine Laguna Hills. Golden with big head,. Tropical flavor and aroma! Good!
