2.3 A plesant enough bitter, with a bit of brown sugar sweetness. Certinally not anything that I would be used to calling an India Pale Ale.
1.9 IPA? Not even close. IPAs are one of my fav’s and this has got to be the worst one I’ve had.. This had a dark brown body, a little heavy, with a fairy thick head and a decent amount of lace. The color looks nothing like an IPA. It tastes more like a Brown Ale as well. Hops? Hardly any. Are they sure they put the right label on this? Wow. Somewhat smooth, but not a fan of the flavor at all. A scotchy malt flavor is the best way I can describe it. Or a milder version of their Scotch Ale, which I found disgusting. Maybe I’ll get it again in a year or so to see what I think then.
2.7 Bottle. Pours brown in color with a one finger head. Aroma is malt and a hint of hops. Flavor was light for an IPA, it had a nice bitter quality to it though. Drinkable.
2.9 Thanks jcwattsrugger. A brown pour with hints of red. Malt and brown sugar without much hops on the nose. Medium sweet on the front with a bit of sweet on the finish. Very thin and watery carbonation is ok. Very average beer that doesn’t seem like an IPA I found it drinkable. What do you know it wasn’t an IPA.
2.4 The color is rather dark and the flavour has a good bitterness from the beginning. Then it has a brief watery feeling that is followed by notes of malt, heather and honey. I wasn’t impressed by this one.
2.6 Name: McEwan’s IPA Date: 04/08/2004 Mode: Bottle Source: Wild Wing Cafe, Marietta dark amber, whispy head, sweet carael malt aroma and flavor, just a touch of bitterness in the finish, Aroma: 5/10; Appearance: 5/10; Flavor: 5/10; Palate: 5/10; Overall: 10/20 Rating: 2.6/5.0 Score: **/4 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The score was calculated based upon the notes and an old scoring system.
2.7 really not what we Americans would refer to as an ipa. semi sweet and malty/earthy. bitter and dry finish with a decent hop tingle. thinnish and stark. tastes dark but of what (could be many things).
2.6 Very middling. Ummmm, why is it called an IPA when it is very clearly (pun) a Bitter?
2.5 Pours a transparent dark copper amber with a small, clingy-lacing off-white head. Aroma of slightly aged toasty caramel malt but no noticable hops and a hint of tartness. Body starts semi-sweet and earthy with a hint of dark caramel and toasted malts, but with a thinner, more bitter and drier finish. Definitely nowhere near being an IPA, and even bland for a bitter.
2.3 Deep amber with off-white head. Malty aroma laced with toffee, caramel, bread. The flavor is mostly sweet with a slight sourness/bitterness in the finish. Thin body and watery texture. Very little carbonation. Bland, quite forgettable.
1.8 For an "IPA" there isnt much hop flavor to speak of, more malt flavor. amber colored pour and really not much bitter flavor. a disappointment.
2.7 Bottle. Dark amber colour with a small white head. Rather sweet aroma with toffee & caramel. Taste is malty with some discreet hops. Quite low bitterness.
1.8 Bottle, really this is a bitter, hmm seems to fall short quite a bit, guess thats just the brewery. Watery taste, but a darker color. Little head , and no lacing. no hops to speak of. Pretty boring not very good.
2.6 A pretty basic unispired bitter that I can’t even describe since it is so plain. I am unispired to even writh anything about this.
2.8 Bottle. Brown amber with a faor head. Malty and hoppy aroma. Thye flavour has a nice hoppiness, good maltiness, slight sourish and with a little nuttiness. Bitter finish. Not an IPA at all.
2.6 brownish pale copper color, slightly cloudy & glossy. very short light tan head that disappears quickly. aroma is a little bit like simple sugar syrup/honey water, and light malt. flavor is mild to weak peaty malt, some light tea and faint caramel malt. hops not so strong, body is mostly watery. I don’t understand why they call this an IPA.
2.0 Very slight hops in the aroma.Pours a reddish color with a thin white head.Slight malt and a touch of hops in the flavor.Very thin mouthfeel with a slight malt finish. This one might have been past its prime.
3.3 Not very hoppy for an IPA, but there was a hint of floral IPA hops, but only just. IPAs in my mind should have a bolder hop finish, and this was nothing more than a malty Scottish ale with some extra hops thrown in at the end of the boil.
3.8 Surprisingly simular to their scotch ale... although not as heavy and not as dark in color. MALTY!
2.9 Not bad, but nothing like what I expected. I thought my beer had been mislabeled until I read others comments. Tasted and looked more like an Octoberfest than IPA. Brown in color with little head, lower alcohol content, and no hoppy bitterness. This is nothing like an IPA. Still, it was pretty drinkable.
3.1 Pours light amber with a thin mostly receding light white head. Aroma is sweet flowery and fruity, notes of funky alefruits. Taste is buttery, sweet caramel, and alefruits. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, soft with light foamy carbonation. Enjoyable fruity IPA from England.
2.8 There’s nothing much I, P, or A about this brew. Tastes nice, but not an IPA. Can distinictly taste pasteurization which gives it a slight stout nose with creamy looking head. Not bad, not what I expected.
2.5 The pour is amber with a small off white head. The aroma of hops is little and there is a slight smokiness. The flavor has almost no hops to be detected but there is a malty flavor and a touch of smoke at the finish.
2.9 Amber pour, mild head.Watery malt aroma and taste with a hint of hops and faint grass. I thought IPA’s were supposed to be a bit higher in ABV?! This is easy to drink but nothin special. May explain why it was at the BB date and on sale for $7 a six.
2.6 A sweet flavor dominates this one, but its still ok with me, as its not sicky sweet, slight hops on the aftertaste,Caramel, about what I was expecting, ok drink, nothing great.
2.2 Nice looking beer. Deep brown with big white head and largish bubbles. Aroma is grassy, and common, and rather like an IPA.Taste is crap, and not readily identifiable as anything like an IPA, but I guess that serves me right for trying an IPA from Scotland of all places. A disaster at $1.80/12oz
3.1 Bottle. Pours dark clear brown with a light white head. Aroma is sweet grainy malt, plus an odd sour note. Flavor is less sweet but still grainy malt, noticeable carbonation-induced bitterness, and a light bit of bittering hops. Definitely not an IPA despite the label; ratebeer’s categorization as a Bitter seems reasonable to me. A pretty decent Bitter, if you weren’t expecting an IPA, and cheap at $6/sixpack here (Atlanta). This beer is kind of odd, really---I "know" it isn’t really good, but there’s something slightly unusual I like about it for a cheap/session sort of beer.
2.5 Bottle at Brews in the Village; nose ewas graing with little hops, brown with a small beige head, flavor grainy with some caramel and a tiny bitter hop finish.
2.7 A lighter bodied IPA with above average carbonation to make up for it. But still drinkable and passable for the style. There is bitterness there and some malt, but also on the watery side. Bit of acidity there. Fine at the end of a summer day.Moderate aroma of hops.
2.6 Dark brown almost black with creamy light brown head. Sour wheaty like smell. Sweet caramel flavor ending with a rich malt.
