2.9 Rated on 10-13-2010 (Bottle) This beer when poured displays a medium sized very, very fizzy tan head that mostly diminishes, semi-transparent/semi-opaque reddish brown body, fizzy, fast rising carbonation, and one ring of lacing. The aroma is roasted malt and caramel. The taste is lightly acidic, roasted malt and chocolate. The palate is smoth and thin. This is a light-medium bodied beer. This beer is easy to drink due to the thin texture. There is not a lot going on with this beer. It is one of those "take it or leave it" type of beer.
2.9 3/16/2010. From bottle. Poured black with a tan head. Roasted malt aromas with dark fruit and caramel. Very yeasty flavors which dominated too much. I didn’t really care for this one.
3.8 A good smooth black lager found it at the Tropicana.
2.7 Bottle with keith. Poured dark brown with small white head. No lace. Lots of sweetness, roast, syrup, milk chocolate, soy sauce, tofee, and sugar full body. Doesn’t seem like a lager.
3.5 Thanks to blutt59 for sharing this bottle. Aroma is toffee, toasted malt and some light smoke. The flavor is similar with some roasted malt and chocolate, as well as a hint of sweetness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
3.3 10/06/2010: McSorley’s Irish Black Lager... Aroma: Cocoa and oats. Appearance: Really nice pour; deep chocolate brown color with a reddish hue; mostly opaque, ample carbonation; thick, dense, and long-lasting 2-finger head of tan-colored foam; thick lacing. Flavor: Dry, roasty malt; molasses in the middle with a slight sweetness; coffee-like/light char in the finish. Palate: Medium-full; thick and creamy, but extremely smooth; filling; feels nitro induced. Overall: Flavorful and enjoyable; under-rated. 12 fl. oz. bottle from Party Town in Florence, KY. Rating #210 for this beer.
2.9 Tickers gotta tick I guess. This is as expected average watery lightly toasty lager without much going on. Some burnt hay and metal in there. Thin and meh.
3.3 Ok decent roasty sweetish black lager, it’s good but easily forgettable already forgot it
2.8 12oz bottle served in a pint glass. A - Pours a very dark brown with a hefty mocha head that has pretty good staying power. S - Dry roasted barley, toasted brown bread, mild caramel and cocoa. T - Roasted malts, brown bread crust, mostly dry but some sweetness is mixed in as well. Faint cocoa comes through and the finish is dry with a bready aftertaste M - Moderate carbonation, coarse at times, light bodied, dry finish. Texture was a bit off but overall pretty solid for the style. Nothing fancy but a solid session beer. Serving type: bottle 11-16-2012
2.7 Dark brown/black color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of toasted malt, & some cocoa/chocolate; Flavor of slight roasted malt, caramel, coffee, and some hops; Finish is slightly bitter; A little watery but decent.
1.7 Similar to a strong brown. Not appealing to my taste. I will not drink again. Pass.
2.9 On tap. Strange categorization, but there’s some interesting elements here.
3.2 Bottle from Asahiya. Light coffee, anise, pine/cedar nose. Very dark, near black, little head. Smooth light choco initial / some tang and herbal notes / finish goes to tart prunes and then fades. Thin body. Okay. A bit watery. But basic flavors are intact
2.7 Aroma is roasted dark malts, caramel and off notes. The flavor is dark malts, caramel, light coffee, spicy off notes and a tangy finish.
1.4 I have a hard time considering this a schwartzbier. Weird water caracter, dusty yeast, savory malt.
2.3 Bottle, pours a thin black, decent looking head, aroma is mild and the flavour is mild, the beer had a ruff finish, overall it was okay
3.4 (12oz bottle) clear deep brown, creamy medium tan head. Nose smells like a kvass, molasses, wort, very sweet and cracked grain. Taste of sweet wort, cola, cream, cracked grain, nice palate, creamy, really quite good for the style.
3.4 Bottle. The body is very dark brown, nearly black with garnet at the edges. There is a nice light brown sugar colored head. The anise tinged nose has some toffee. This tastes of black tea and anise. There is also some light roasted coffee. Decent with a fair amount of carbonation. A decent schwarzbier.
2.8 On tap at McSorley’s (New York, New York) Aroma: Charred nuts, licorice, some bread. Appearance: Dark bread, minimal white head. Taste: Slight bitterness. Like burnt toast. Palate: Light bodied with a soft carbonation. McSorleys is a great establishment and the beer is fitting in the context of McSorleys, but it’s not particularly good on its own.
2.0 High carbonation, burnt charred taste. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
1.5 Brown red color with high carb head that disappeared quickly. Charred sweet, lactose scent. Somewhat sour chocolate taste with burnt flavor. Dry overly carbonated. Definitely would not get again.
2.5 Dark pour, weird that's it's a pabst cover up beer, probably the better of the mcsorley beers... Decent
2.7 bottle into glass..pours very dark..chocolate malty raisen aroma, taste is roasted nut, coffe, not bad, but wouldnt seek out
4.0 This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a large sized head of cascading foam finely sized light brown colored bubbles that were long lasting and left behind a black brown colored body and a thick foamy lacing. The aroma was mildly smoky musty soft hops and dark malt. The thick mouth feel was weakly tingly at the start mediumly tingly at the finish. The thick lagerish flavor contained notes of mild smoke mild hops and black malt. A decent one that I would consider buying again.
3.2 Black pour with a tan head. Aroma is black patent malt, nutty, some chocolate. Taste is nutty, semi-sweet, roasted malt. Has a dry finish. An ok beer.
2.8 Not particularly impressed with this beer. Has a nice appearance, but even the aroma is slightly off-putting, being somewhat sour. It is watery, but I’m a fan of wateriness in my black beers, with a slightly roasted character. Not particularly sweet either.
3.4 Poured from bottle. Aroma of roasted malt and licorice. Solid black. Lots of malt and nut flavors with a touch of toffee. Very drinkable with full feel. Suprisingly good.
2.2 Something to me is thrilling about getting the chance to try a Schwarzbier made by Pabst. Dark brown, sorta black-ish, but certainly ruby hued when held up to the light. The head is medium sized, tight, and well retained. It’s a pretty glass of beer. The aroma is brash, very concentrated on molasses with some tinny and vegetal characteristics up front that sort of fade into the background quickly. Roasty and at times ashy smelling, the beer is not wholly uninviting. My goodness, the flavor is not much better... I didn’t have high hopes for this being wonderful, but I though it might be ok... It’s not really ok, the flavor is again brash but only lightly roasty, some unripe fruit, some molasses, some bit of bitterness, overall it’s sort of bland.
3.8 Pours dark black with a thick, white head. It has a sweet, malty aroma. The taste is of dry, burnt malt that is reminiscent of over-toasted bread. It has a thick mouthfeel, and the burnt-toast taste is predominant. No malt sweetness. Great black lager!
3.2 Bottle. Chocolate malt and dark fruit aroma. Black brown with a small tan head. Fruity dark roasted malt, light sweet lactic flavor, and some slight chocolate. Medium body.
