Mendocino Eye of the Hawk Select Ale

Mendocino Eye of the Hawk Select Ale

Eye of the Hawk is an excellent, strong, rich bodied ale that is "Bottle Conditioned" to perfection. "Eye" is coppery reddish-amber in color and its unique taste is the result of a judicious mix of caramel and pale malted barley, balanced with Cluster, Cascade and Saaz hops. This gives the Eye its luxurious flavor, substantial mouth-feel and that slightly dry finish.

3.5 Pour is a light orange, small head. Some burnt caramel and vague sweetness on the nose with basic baked goods like biscuit and maybe some ripe fruit.
2.9 Pours a pale amber color with an off white head. Caramel, biscuit, hop, floral and fruit aroma and flavors. Medium full body with average carbonation. Caramel, toffee and floral finish.
2.9 Bottle->SA. Amber with faint lite tan head. A: strong sweet malt, grains, faint citrus hops. T: more sweet malt, grains, nuts, bitter hops. Strong. Eh.
2.8 Appearance: Clear amber, ok amount of off-white head. Aroma: Raisins and malt. Taste: Strong, alcohol, dark fruit. A bit harsh. Bought: Total Wine (Sterling), 355 ml, $1.69 Info: 16/9-2015
3.0 Bottled (backlog). Amber colour, small off-white head. Aroma is caramel malts, some grains, a bit of alcohol as well as a slight bit of floral notes. Flavour is caramel, some floral notes as well as some mild alcohol to it. Balanced, but nothing all too special.
2.3 Looks good. Pours clear orange/amber, however it does the scent of a poor home brewed ale. And not surprisingly, it has a acetaldehyde after-taste. Hop presence lacking and syrupy malt mouthfeel. Not a particularly tasty strong ale. Would not buy again.
2.8 Pours a nice Amber/dark copper color. Aroma of sweet malts and faint hops. Taste is a mouthful of malts. Some floral notes from the hops. It's an ok strong ale.
3.2 From bottle to pint glass, pours a pale copper with almost no head. Sweet malty aroma, hint of blackcurrants and dark fruits, rounds out with strong yeast and spicy hops. Dry and moderate bitter finish.
3.2 Pours clear orange-amber with a foamy white head. Aroma is lots of caramel, bread, vague soft fruitiness, cracker, and alcohol. Taste is bread, caramel, alcohol, yeast, a bit earthy, and medium bitterness. Medium body, finishes dry. Alcohol is a little harsh, not a lot of complexity.
3.0 インペリアルエール ポップの感じは弱いけど、あまさは強めでしっかりした味
3.6 Looks good in the glass, smells really sweet. The taste is sweet and malty, then dry and strong. I think $11 for the six was a bit on the high side, but what’s a coupla two tree bucks if it gets you where you wanna go. I will put this into the new category of beer I just made up, micro-brew malt liquor. As long as I don’t have a headache in the morning, I’ll consider this a solid purchase, but make it a buck or two cheaper so I can get a lottery ticket, and it’s a "rock" solid purchase.
3.0 Dry, earthy hops. Burnt caramel up front. Frothy think mouth feel. It's decent but I won't revisit.
3.0 Aroma: toasted malt and dark fruit. Raisins and caramel Appear: reddish copper. White head. No lacing Taste: sweet toffee in the front. Bitter on the back. Cluster hops come through at the finish. Palate: medium bodied. A bit cloying. Over carbonated.
3.1 Pours amber with a thin head. Aroma is malty with some fruity notes. Taste mirrors the smell. Nice mild bitterness with a dry finish. Alcohol is well masked. Overall a fairly decent offering. Not my favorite style but good.
3.1 Very dark fruit smell, sweet malty dark fruit taste, some hops in there that kinda brings it down a bit, interesting mix though
3.0 Drank from the bottle. Aroma consists of cereal, caramel, hops, and nuts. Taste is much the same. Slightly chewy, medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation. Solid beer
3.3 average frothy white head. fair lacing. mostly diminishing. translucent thick light amber body. aroma: alcohol, honey, flowers and light hoppy. if: moderate sweet light bitter. ff: moderate sweet bitter; long duration. palate: medium body, watery/oily texture, lively carbonation and heavy alcoholic finish. Aroma frutado. Dulçor frutado, alcoólico, lembrando um pouco de mel – saboroso, mas não dura muito. Amargor lupulado escalante entra em choque com forte e aquecido final alcoólico, que se sobrepõe a nuance inicial. 60 s
3.5 An American Strong Ale red color of amber and caramel aroma has strong bitterness from start to finish. Unbalanced.
4.5 nice. Balanced. It’s, hoppy and malty, with spicy notes. Long lasting flavour.
3.4 Full-bodied heavily fruity ale with some alcohol in the nose and the chest. Pleasantly balanced flavors but noticeably strong.
3.2 "this was one of my first experiences with a strong ale back in the day, and for a while was one of my favorites. still one of their better beers, although it’s slipped a bit. nice hop backbone and balance, pours dark amber...try a blackeye."
2.6 Rätt okej bira här. Första för min del ifrån Mendocino. Hittade den i en liten butik i Helsingør.
4.5 Mendocino Eye of the Hawk has a thin, cream-colored head, a murky, copper appearance, strong bubble streams, and very little lacing left behind. The aroma is of pungent, rich, sweet, spiced bread, and dark bread crust. Taste is of sugar, caramel, dark bread crust, light fruits (dates or figs), some bitterness, and noticeable alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy, and Mendocino Eye of the Hawk finishes wet, sweet, and heavy. RJT
2.8 Bottle at home from backlog notes. Pours a slightly hazy orange amber color with a medium sized off white head. The aroma and flavor are heavy on the sweet malts, cookies, some light floral and earthy hops but not enough to balance the sweetness. Would not have guessed 8% due to the sweetness and thin body.
3.4 A pretty tasty beverage. Pours a hazy orange with sediment. Aromas are fruit and wet dog. Flavors are smooth for the high abv. Fruity and a bit hoppy. Decent.
3.9 Taste-ickles. Another "select" ale from Mendocino and a good one at that. Burnt Werther’s colour with an off white head. Big vanilla cookie, biscuit, brown sugar malt snooching up the nose as well as some light warming booze and background citrus. Very enjoyabeer, good price and nice meaty texture considering she ain’t that dark.
4.2 Love the texture and rich caramel and hoppy flavor. Smooth taste but it has a mouth feel that gives you something to chew on.
3.5 12 oz bottle. Cloudy amber with a decent off-white head. Aroma is of sweet sticky toffee and caramel, cookie dough, notes of bread dough and pie crust as well. Taste is of malt, light earthy notes (woody shrubs and dirt), caramel and herbal hop notes.
3.1 Bottle. The look is a slight haze, off white colored head also lacing, and amber in color. The smell is caramel, hops, malts, sweet, and pine. The taste is sweet, very caramel, cardboard, malts, and grass.
2.5 Bottle. Hazy amber pour with white head. Aroma dominated by yeasty notes. Flat taste. Low carbonation.
