3.3Appearance was clear redhoney caramel with a creamy off white lasting 2 finger head, lacing throughout. Aromas where sweet biscuity caramel nutty malts. Mild citrusy herbal spicy hops with slightly floral yeasts. No alcohol present. Taste was sweet roasty honey malts, then lemony piney, earthy resinous hops.Milder bite when warms up and less caulky end. Palate was smooth creamy carbonation with medium body. Hoppy caulky bite at finish. If the finish was smoother...
3.212oz bottle - pours copper with ivory head and some lacing. Nose is caramel and floral. Flavor adds hay. You know how a cat acts when they’re lapping like crazy, trying to remove something from their mouth? That’s what I’m doing right now and I don’t know why but I know the beer caused it. taste is sweet but oddly bitter. Sticky. refreshing and nothing like the other Mendocino’s I’ve had.
2.8Bottle: Pours cloudy amber orange with a mostly diminishing off white head. Lacing is fair. Aroma of light bread, pine and light yeast. Flavor is light sweet with some vanilla. Duration is average with a light creamy body.
3.2Poured from a bottle into a pilsner glass. Appearance is a translucent copper to amber with a thin white head of soapy looking foam that dissipates rapidly. Aroma is slightly sweet and earthy, reminiscent of canteloupe rind. Taste is softly bitter. Mouthfeel is smooth and leaves a thin coating on the tongue. Light in body with a somewhat grainy finish.
3.3Bottle from Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours clear copper with a large beige head and a toffee aroma. There is a medium-bodied caramel malt flavor with a slightly bitter finish.
3.0Aroma is slightly gritty grains, yeast and fruit/citrus. The appearance is more amber than most heller bocks. The flavor is pale malts with a hint of darker malts added as well, a mild fruitiness and the malts dominate in the finish. As far as bocks go it was decent enough, although it looked a lot darker than a heller normally does and tasted a lot closer to a doppelbock than is usual for the style.
3.3Tap. Pours clear copper with thin, creamy off-white head; short retention and spare lacing. Aroma is cookie malt, fruit, caramel, spice, and light grassy hops. Flavor is sweet malt forward, light hops, and light fruit esters; dry finish. Light body and warmth with medium carbonation.
3.7nice golden orange beer with good head bright slightly sweet flavor with great body and mouthfeel. nice seasonal, not too complex, but done right...
3.2Date: January 22, 2012 Mode: Bottle Source: BVery Description: Translucent orangish brown pour with minimal head. Aroma starts hoppy and then goes malty. Taste is citrus and caramel, but is weak. Smooth and easy drinking though.
3.3Bottle. Slightly hazy orange pour with a smaller white head. Caramel and citrus hop nose. Medium palate. Taste is breast and citrusy hop, with some caramel.
3.4This brew pours a slightly cloudy orange-gold color with a medium off-white head that dissipates quickly to an outer ring. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of caramel malt and fruit. Light body with a syrupy sweet character and notes of malt, caramel and ripe fruits. The finish is malty with a short grassy hops aftertaste. Decent Bock overall.
3.2nice malty aroma with very light pine notes - bready, caramel, maple syrup and a nice slight bitter aftertaste of mild pepper
3.4Bottle. Not sure if this is a Spring Seasonal anymore, since I just found it and it’s new to my shop, but whatever. Aroma of chocolate and toffee. Similar taste, has a nice roasted aspect to it. Very drinkable, def recommend it! 6% alcohol.
3.112oz bottle. Pours an amber color with a finger thick off white head that fall quickly to a ring. Smell is a clean balance of caramel malts and fresh grassy hops. Taste of mild caramel followed by a bit of light warming alcohol and then faint grassy hops in the end that give a easy bitter finish. Creamy with low carbonation. Not very complex, but decent.
2.6Appearance: orangey brown, with one finger of off-white head and no lacing. Aroma: caramel, burnt sugar, dust, a little earthy hops. Taste: caramel, toffee, melting brown sugar, bit of metal, damp basement, and a hit of earthy, resinous pine. Finish: bitter, tangy, and slightly musty/metallic. Notes: Meh. Seemed more like a very water doppelbock than a heller.
3.4Poured from a bottle into a pilsner glass. Probably a tad more than an inch of head. Color was a dark caramel. Some lacing on the top and some uneven film on the sides, which was scattered throughout the glass.
A big mix of hops and bitterness on the smell. Also some pine and citrus (grapefruit). Pretty flavorful smell.
First taste is almost a honey flavor. It is then followed by a touch of bitterness, ending with pine and citrus.
Moderate-to-high carbonation. The flavor that kept sticking around was bitterness and pine/citrus.
A pretty good beer overall. I’d definitely try it again. I’d be curious to how it tastes out of the draft.
2.6Bottle. Pour is a clear, dark copper with little head. Aromas are sweet, heavy and malty, almost like an Oktoberfest or something. Heavy medium-colored malt sugars have little hop sharpness against which to contrast. Flavor follows suite, with a heavy-handed caramel (and apple juice) malt presence (very sugary) that has little to play against and almost comes across as cloying. Wait... it is cloying. This beer simply is not for me.
3.3Poured into a lager glass. Color is copper with a thin head. Aroma is sweet and malty with slight floral hop character. Flavor is similar with sort of a sweet fruity maltiness and very light hop finish. Palate is light and crisp. Overall a nice mild beer that is highly drinkable.
3.7Enjoyed from the bottle. Beer has a nice bitterness, and seems strong on a empty stomach. So its a good beer.
3.3Bottle from Chula Vista Liquor store next to DMV: Surprisingly, this poured a dense and dark honey color while a thick pillow of white foam head formed on top. In the aroma, my nose detects a subtle scent of caramelized malts and reminds me a toned down marzen/oktoberbfest style of beer. The flavor is actually quite tasty with a sweet base of caramel like malt that also has a funky strain of yeast that tries to mimic traditional German yeasts. As for the palate, a refined and relaxing level of carbonation that leaves behind a tootsie roll aftertaste.
3.2A bit more kick than expected in both malt and hop. Grassiness gives way to an off bitterness but that all sits under a thick malt flavor. May be a happy divergence for someone who loves the style, but for me, meh.
3.5[Bottle] Lightly clouded golden amber, moderate head formation. Caramel malt aroma, touch of spice. Sweet syrupy first half, caramel malts, a little bready, plenty of hop bitterness in the finish makes for a good balance. Tastier and better than I expected.
3.8bottle pours orangey-amber with a slight haze and a nice sized off-white head. Aroma hits with bread, yeast, and a malty toffee sweet note. Flavor is full on malt with toffee and caramel and a raw slight tartness that reminds me of a homebrew. I wasn’t expecting much but this beer is surprisingly pleasant.
3.412oz in stange. Amber with lofty, lasting foam and attractive lacing. Sweet zucchini-bread aroma. Starts with a generous wave of soft, toasty malt and moves toward an unwelcome indistinct bitterness. The hole in the palate of most lagers is filled in this beer’s case, which leads me to guess that it likely was fermented with an ale yeast.
3.412 oz bottle from NY. Pours a crystal clear copper/amber/slight brown color with little to no head. Sweet, bready, malty notes come through in the aroma. Medium body with some slight chewiness to it. Nice malt character that is slightly sweet, clean and crisp finish. Overall: (B+)
3.8Bottle. Pours a deep amber with a good sized off white head. Aroma and flavor are full of bready malt, lots of caramel, and some fruity esters (cherry, in particular). Quite sweet, but there’s also some bitterness in the finish. Mouthfeel is rather thick, but the carbonation is lively, which lightens the palate. A great bock.
3.5Pours copper with a tan head. Smells of biscuits, light fruity hints, some spice. Tastes of spice, breaddy, some peppery splashes with some mild bitterness on the finish.
3.1Bottle thanks to Dmac. Pours out an interesting caramel/copper color with a fading white head. Aroma is caramel, and some light bready grains. Taste is caramel, bread, some malty sweetness, and a slight lingering tell of some grassy hop notes in there somewhere. Solid, and rather drinkable.
3.7Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a pint glass. The label has no freshness date or abv%.
Appearance: Its body has a bright orange color with great clarity and some carbonation. This is topped by a just off whit head about two fingers tall from the pour. This slowly settles to a thin cap that hangs on well and make for some slick lacing.
Smell: There is light bready malt sweetness here with hints of buttery toffee & caramel. I also pick up a bit of raw grain and some slight grassy/herbal hops way off in the background.
Taste/Palate: The flavor matches the aroma with a medium bodied base of sweet bready malt that has hints of toffee and caramel. This is backed up by a light grainy character and a touch of grassy hops. The palate is fairly smooth and maybe a touch light but still quite enjoyable.
Notes: Overall I feel this is a decent beer and a good value for its price rage.
3.2Bottle; poured a caramel orange type color wtih a smaller off white head. Aroma of bread, caramel, fruit and spice. Flavor was full of the caramel and spicy earth flavor expected. Fairly sweet. Notes of alcohol and fruit.
