2.6Clear yellow with a white head. The aroma is a bit strange. I get some sweet alcohol notes as well as some cinnamon, pepper and biscuit malt. The flavor is similar. I get some strong biscuit malt notes as well as some candy sugar and alcohol. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
3.5Poured a thin head on a light straw colored body.
It smells like just milled grain, grass, alcohol and banana bread. Nice.
The taste is a muted sweetness, a little dry spice and finishes with a mild bitter note.
It has a crisp texture with moderate carbonation.
I like it.
4.1Celis Grand Cru has a thick, white head and a clear, golden appearance, which hazes up when the sediment is poured in. There are many streaming bubbles, good lacing, and lots and lots of brown floating chunks. The aroma is of pungent, bready malt, sugar, spices, and citrus. Taste is the same, with a strong wedding cake aspect and decent enough underlying bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium, and Celis Grand Cru finishes dry, elegant, and drinkable. Also, the alcohol presence is there, but it’s not offensive. Overall, this is a really nice beer. I am sad that the company is shut down. RJT
3.2Light in color and taste. I was surprised by the pleasant taste of this beer.
2.96 pack purchased at BevMo in Redding, CA. I was excited to purchase this because I had not had it for at least 8-10 years, since the REAL Celis Brewery in Austin, TX closed, and Pierre has since gone to Heaven. So when I saw Michigan Brewing Company was brewing the beer, I said to myself, "Ok, we’ll see..." So, here is my rating: THE POUR / APPEARANCE: pours a very pale yellow, to be honest, it almost reminded me of a American Budweiser color. Good head retention, decent Brussels lace. AROMA / BOUQUET: Nose is citrus- grapefruit, lemon, grassy. TASTE: This beer is not as well carbonated as it once was. I remember Celis Grand Cru being almost "Hot" from the spiciness when I last had it- this does not have that intensity. PALATE: This version is also not as carbonated as the original version, it is a bit thin in the mouthfeel. OVERALL: This beer is a "lite" version of what it once was. It’s a good beer now, but not world class. Slight disappointment in this one.
2.7Pale gold.. funky aroma, hint of vinegar, barnyard, spice, citrus.. mildly sour, lacks flavor; just not a lot going on at all, disappointing.
1.0June 18 2012. 12 oz. bottle pours a transparent very pale golden yellow color, minimal carbonation. 1 inch bubbly white head fades to ring but leaves good lacing. Aroma of yeast and undefined spices. Skunky. Taste very yeasty; made me look for expiration date. Nothing else to balance stale yeasty flavour. Left mouth feeling chalky and gross. Horrible beer!
2.612 oz. bottle served in tumbler- 1st beer served with my wife’s friends. Poured a transparent golden yellow color, minimal carbonation, 2.5 mm white head formed and tried it’s best to lace. Aroma of yeast, wheat, and a few spices. Hits the mouth with a low-medium body, malt is very light on the palate, middle has a touch of sweetness, finish has a small amount of fruit (you really have to search for it). Meh- but the girls liked it...
2.8Pors golden with lots of lacing. Aroma is not really distinct. Taste is yeasty yeasty yeasty. Not the best beer but by far not the worst.
3.0355ml bottle from variety pack. Lovely sweet and floral odor. I'm guessing this is a wheat beer judging by the smell, but it doesn't say so anywhere. Pale yellow (Lovibond 2/3) but, unlike wheat beers, it's transparent. Thin white head, which persists nicely! Lots of lace too. Tastes sweet and again, like wheat beer, has a citrus-added zing in there. Somewhat chalky mouthfeel, but probably velvet smooth would be a better description. Also, a very creamy and earthy taste of butter although finishes kind of soapy. Not bad. If this is a wheat beer, I'm amazed I rated it this high.
3.5Spicy with bitter undertones. Light fizzing and lingering full taste. Slightly sweet smell
2.8Aroma is yeast and a strong fruitiness. The flavor is yeast, spices and some alcohol throughout and into the finish. The appearance wasn’t what I was expecting and the flavor was okay but not great.
3.212oz bottle: Appearance is golden with quick fading white head. Aroma is almost nonexistent with hints of spices. Taste is somewhat Belgian, somewhat sweet and hints of spices. Lacks all Belgian yeast character and not very unique, but not bad.
0.8Very light yellow color with quickly dissapearing foam head, lacing to glass. Smells like roasted pork meat, taste is undefined. I checked the date on the bottle. Not nice. (Houston 201205)
3.012oz bottle: Pours a clear golden color with a 1-2 finger thin white head with virtually no lacing. The nose is reminiscent of a Belgian but not complete. The taste is where this falls apart. It has noticeable esters with some spice but not much more. The mouth feel is medium. This is a mediocre beer which explains the price. I have better memories of this when it was brewed by Celis in Texas years ago.
3.1Bottle as shown. Pours a clear yellow with small frothy whote head. The aroma is yeast and floral hop. Thin mouthfeel with a sweet malt and crisp finish. Easy to drink a good belgian strong ale.
4.5Great taste true to style , outstanding aroma, clear golden color, very well balanced.
3.3Bottle. Pale golden beer with a whitish head. Spice andlight orange aroma with wheat. Orange and spice flavor with wheat. Orange and malt/wheat lingers with light spice.
3.1Bottle from Total Wine, Sacramento. Pours clear golden with an attractive white head and a fruity aroma. There is a spicy pale malt flavor that is quite thin with a little banana ester. I appreciate this brewery trying to keep Celis alive, but this is nothing like the original brew.
2.9On tap at the brewpub...one of the lightest colored beers I’ve ever seen (looks like white wine), however, the taste is of a funky Belgian. I’ve had this a few times and sometimes I really like it and other times I don’t know what to think.
3.0Clear light golden hay color with a light head and thin (but full) spider-web lacing. This is in many ways just another Belgian Ale, only without as much taste or life, and way more alcohol. There is a clean sweet wheat with light spices and maybe a little bubblegum that warms nicely with the alcohol, but the brew is a little off-putting due to a lack of effervesence. It is so still it could almost pass for an odd tasting Rhine Wine. Drinkable, but odd.
2.5Cloudy golden...not much head...not much of anything really...light sweet aroma and flavor...yeast mild also...has a slightly viscous mouthfeel...sweet spiced finish clove
3.312 fl oz bottle from Finger Lakes Beverage, served cold in a tulip glass. 07DE11.
App.: Clear bright yellow with a fair bright white head.
Aroma: Bright, pungent, earthy, lemony coriander, esters – mainly tropical fruits, yeast, herbal, sweet, some floral honey, nice.
Palate: Medium body, moderate, somewhat aggressive effervescence.
Flav.: Lots of esters – bubble gum, pineapple, passion fruit, earthy/lemony coriander, yeast, floral, sweet, a little alcohol, nice; sweet with minimal bitterness and an herbal, floral, coriander and sweet malt finish.
I think Peter would approve.
2.8Pours pale gold with a faint head. Smells of herbs and sweet spices. Medium nectar with good carbonation. This is a malty sweet brew with flavors of banana, citrus, pineapple and vanilla cream. Not much of a bittering agent. Nothing offensive here at all. Just sweet tasty malt. Couldn’t drink more than one due to it’s richness and lack of balance.
3.2Refrigerated bottle poured into a trappist glass. Pours clear light yellow with small white head. A little light lacing, light body, and light carbonation. Taste is herbal malt and some spicyness in the finish. Alcohol is pretty well covered.
3.0Fair head , light yellow color, spicy aromatic odor, nice belgian style ale just a little high on carbonation, alcoholic as it warms.
2.3Bottle from Andersons. This may be the worst Belgian ale I’ve ever had. It’s not that it’s bad, it’s just boring. Pours yellow with a thin white head. not much on the nose or tongue. Hard to believe this one is 8%. Watery.
3.012 fl oz bottle. Pours clear and golden yellow with a small white head. Aroma is mild spiced and light wheaty. Sweet, mild fruity and wheaty. Dry estery and slight spiced to phenolic finish. Ends dry.
2.7Bottle 12fl.oz.
[ As Celis Grand Cru (Celis Brewery) ].
Clear light to medium yellow colour with a small to average, frothy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, white head. Aroma is light malty, moderate yeasty, spicy, coriander, citrus notes. Flavour is moderate sweet and light bitter with a average to long duration, whaety, yeasty, spicy. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20110622]
