Michigan Brewing High Seas India Pale Ale

Michigan Brewing High Seas India Pale Ale

Our interpretation of a legendary style is not for the timid. Strong, assertively hoppy and dangerously seductive. A skillful blend of three premium barley malts with generous amounts of Northern Brewer and Cascade Hops creates a special ale to satisfy even the most demanding palate.

3.6 Bottle. Strong pine and grapefruit hops aroma. Golden yellow color with moderate head. Sweet orange malt initially followed by a moderately strong bitter grapefruit peel/pine hops finish. Well-made IPA.
3.9 aroma is good pine and lemon. lightly bready malt creeps in. appearance is big legs, lasting head, clouded gold. flavor is excellent balance of well developed malts presenting as fresh bread along side fresh lemon zest and bare tips of other tropical fruits. mouthfeel is satisfyingly full and coating.
3.7 Bottle courtesy of ray101. Pours copper with a generous white head. Smells of wildflowers, light spice, earthy, some funky undertones. Tastes dry with a pronounced floral note, soe spicy elements and a dry crisp finish.
3.2 12 ounce botle that pours hazy red/orange color that had a little white head. Each swig had had aliitle flavor of pineapple, and apricot. A decent IPA that i would drink again.
3.1 A goodish ipa but no goose island. Not very aromatic, a bit more flavorful. More sweet than typical.
3.9 This IPA has a strong aroma that pair well with its cloudy amber orange color and frothy white head. It has a heavy bitter taste with an abrupt finish. Overall this is a great IPA.
3.4 A solid IPA. Catching up on my old ratings, must be from when Ben4321 lived with me. Would like to try again.
3.6 Pours a cloudy burnt orange flavor with 2 finger head. nice nose of grapefruit and orange--sweet. Taste is of heavy citrus grapefruit, pine bitter mouth pucker hops. hint of carmel malts. Finishes with an acidic texture that develops leaving you with the hops over the malt--tingles. Very nice ipa, balance isnt perfect but still good.
3.9 One of their longtime house brews is their High Seas IPA, which is also distributed in many areas of the state. While MBC tweaks their recipes pretty regularly, this is a more traditional IPA, in the sense that it’s both high gravity and generous with the hops. Checking in at around 7.5 percent, it leads off a spicy Cascade dry hopped aroma and immediately warms the palate with a nice malty fullness. The sweetness shifts quickly into a sharp hoppy bite and rolls off the back of the tongue and into the exhale with a long, lingering dry finish. Classic. If you’re into the huge IBUs, this one may be a little less satisfying than others, but for an IPA with a little more balance, this would be one to seek out. As MBC can be inconsistent overall, this is one of their best and most reliable offerings. Serving type: on-tap
3.6 On draft at Bar Louie. Hazy copper color with frothy white head. Aroma of heavy pine resin, grapefruit. Taste is quite bitter, with a bit of balancing caramel sweetness. Crisp and lively mouthfeel. A solid IPA, especially if you like them more hop-forward.
3.8 Light orangish pour, whitish head. Citrus, floral and earthy hops dominate with some nice fruity caramel malt in the background. Not a bad little brew here!
3.0 Pours up on tap at the brewery with a brownish orange and no head. Hoppy aroma with apricot. Bit of a watery flavor, and quite hoppy.
3.6 Aroma - basic floral, faint apple notes, hint of caramel; Appearance - copper, slightly hazy, extremely think head, excellent lacing; Taste - heavy hop front, back blends a subtle spiciness with a balanced malt profile, finish is long and tart; Palate - slightly crisp, pretty good body; Overall - solid in all areas though nothing really stands out.
3.3 [Bottle] Pours a light orange color with a large cap of white head. Aroma of pine and grapefruit. Sweet malt backbone with some toffee. Overall a lingering bitter finish with some astringency. Average mouthfeel and body. High carbonation. Has a nice hop kick, but is otherwise pretty standard.
3.6 This is a great IPA just enough hops to push it right to the edge, but well balanced so you can drink alot of it. Very well done.
4.0 The store that set up a big display and promotion for Michigan Beers six weeks ago now has most of the brews deeply discounted and dumped into a cart labelled "discontinued items." Well - get it when you can. Pour form a 12 oz bottle is cloudy copper with a thinish off white head. Aroma is pungent and good - lots of citrus and pine hops with a carmel under pinning. Flavor is excellent - strong hoppiness and complex hoppiness belies a pretty nice malt backbone. Lively carbonation and stong hops gives this a real tingle as you swallow. A pretty serious IPA that is seriously good.
3.0 7/24/10. 12oz bottle courtesy Cavie. Very malty, a hint of black tea, not much hop presence. Eh.
3.5 Hazy amber with a thin cream head. Nose is piney hops, bitter, and sticky. Nice on the palate, flavor is bitter pine hops, malts, and a resiny finish.
3.6 Pint glass at the detroit airport while waiting for a connecting flight to gr for rbsg. A light copper pour with a small white head that soon recedes to a fine riing and shows some minor lacing. Aroma is mild with pine and salty malts. The flavor is robust with piney hops. Loads of biscuit and some walnuts. Palate is full and malty smooth with lively carbonation. Finishes short and lightly biter. Rated on my cell. Very tasty stuff.
3.7 The beer pours an orange color with a white head. The aroma is a mixture of various hop characteristics including floral and citrus along with some caramel malt and bready malt. The flavor starts off with piney and resiny hops but I also get some floral and citrus notes. The caramel malt backbone keeps the bitterness pretty low. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. I was surprised by how nice this beer was.
3.3 Glowing amber color/ frothy beige head. Grassy hop, sharp caramel aromas. medium bodied. Decent caramel, grainy malt flavors with leafy, floral hops.
3.2 Nice amber coloured body with a copper glow and a thin off-white head. Aroma of fresh hops and caramel with a good malt backbone. Medium-bodied; Rich hop flavours of grass and perfume come through the most with a good malt backbone, a touch of caramel. Aftertaste has a relative hop bitterness with some good sweet flavours. Overall, a good IPA - definitely worth trying if you can find it! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased at Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 06-June-2008.
3.5 this one wasnt very hop-heavy, and i could really notice the malts. was very drinkable but not as intense as many other IPA’s
3.5 En champps americana DTW. Estan bien un par de bicHas. La birria parecida, salada y hoppy
2.7 I look at all these high ratings and think I had an old bottle. Odd aroma. Bland malty taste. Very uninteresting beer.
3.5 Fresh, cascade, grapefruit, and grass aroma; flavour similar with citrus, bread and balancing caramel. Golden-copper, with frothy white head. Full bodied, fresh, with lasting bitterness.
3.5 12 ounce bottle-a orangish pour-white head-aroma and taste of citrus, grass, -a decent ipa not great

2.6 Easier on the palate than most IPAs. Definitely a sessionable beer. orange/apricot aroma. Taste is weak. Nothing special - would not buy again, but would accept if given.
3.9 2007: Boy this one looks nice. The head disappears quickly. It’s dark orange, cloudy with a lot of sediment. This one is gonna be thick, I can tell. Woody hop flavor, with a flowery undertone. Toasted biscuity malt. Hint of oak with an alcohol punch. Very *very* strong. Almost a strong ale, moreso than an IPA, I would say. I would call it a Strong Ale with a hop kick. Extremely woody/oaky. Very pungent aftertaste. Thick and chunky. Very creamy and leaves a major, lasting film. Super thick. Thick and oaky. Hops are really secondary. This is hardcore stuff. Hard to repeat.
