3.8 Hazy amber color; medium sized head, compact. The aroma is still very nice, fruity; then comes a strong, mellow aroma of brewing cereals; unexpected, but pleasant. Good body strength, caramel flavor, lightly soapy; strong bitterness, still some hop resins, but no fruits. Strong and long final. Solid brew. Unfortunately, another bottle that I maybe spoiled, keeping it too long (since Oct ’09 till July ’10), waiting to share it...
3.5 draft at Coles, Buffalo NY. light caramel copper color. medium hop aroma, not getting that typical MA buttery taste/aroma. taste is medium bitterness, kind of light for a DIPA. Balanced but lacking the needed hop BITE, IMO
3.9 Maybe i souldn’t review a couple of DIPA’s in one night, just saying...Nice deep amber pour, little head, but than again, I have been sitting on this for a bit and not quite sure how it ages, thanks Dmangtr for the beer. Overall a fan, i love Dipa’s, but this was just a big boozy ass-kicking to my sobriety, i felt drunker and drunker the more i drank. Big malts, big hops, and finishes with big booze. This may not be the best review but my bad. Good luck, good beer.
3.7 Middle Ages Double India Pale Ale is a hazy amber ale with a big, fluffy, off white head that has really good retention. It leaves nice sip lines on the glass. It has a green, leafy aroma. It smells like hop pellets. There are notes of hay and orange peel in the nose. It’s pretty full bodied and smooth with a dry finish that leaves the tongue a little chalky. It’s peppery and resiny tasting. The leafy, green bitterness is pretty strong and it lingers a little after the swallow. There’s not really any sweetness here. Yeah, it’s a double IPA and there’s nothing wrong with it but if someone was looking for a double IPA I wouldn’t recommend this immediately.
3.8 Aroma is floral, hoppy, fruity. Light on malts, heavy on hops, much of what would be expected from double IPA. Strong in alcohol. Nice after taste. Definitely have this one again.
3.8 (Old BA rate - bottle) Hazy orange amber color, with a thinnish white head. Sample didn’t provide too much lacing. Pretty tame hoppy aroma for a DIPA, but with a lot of malt sweetness behind it. Great cedary/piney hop bitterness, but again, a lot of malt to back it up. Pretty good balance for the style. Medium feel, with some slickness. This is actually one of the more drinkable DIPA’s that I’ve had lately.
3.8 Sampled at Central New York Brewfest, Syracuse NY. 06FE10. Cask. App.: Hazy deep amber, frail off-white rim. Aroma: So very American – lots of big juicy C-hops, backed my nice crunchy caramalt – marmalade on good German rye bread. Palate: Medium body, still, slick. Flav.: Like the nose, the hops are oily and quite piney with fair grapefruit, enough malt for support, slightly peppery; lightly sweet with good bitterness and a somewhat spicy/peppery finish that fades to toffee. Pretty nice. One of the few cask ales at the Fest.
3.6 22oz from a trade on BA - thanks Foster! Medium amber pour with a very creamy one-finger head and some opaqueness. Smell is crisp and dry with a sweet vapor trail. Taste is a bit interesting in that one moment it seems a bit too sweet, and the next a bit too sharp. Not off-putting just a bit odd. Decent IIPA.
3.2 Pours a hazy copper color with a tan head. Aroma is caramel, nutty, fruity, and toast. Flavor is caramel, toasty, nutty, and a bitter citrus finish.
3.6 This beer comes with really nice hops. The hops are a little harsh, but it’s in a good way.
3.8 2009 Bottle - Thanks corey70! - Pours a hazy orange with a small white head...aroma is oily hops and quite floral, citrus and caramel sweetness...flavour is similar, noble hop profile, dry and biting, light spice and some resin...finish is a lingering clean grapefruit bitterness, with not noticable abv...tasty stuff!
4.4 Thick and hazy like a dense fog. Large puffy head. Bright but awfully murky dark orange. The ideal, iconic look for an IPA. Aroma is a perfect floral hop; butter but with a spicy sweetness. A magnificently citrusy hop scent. Stronger and more bitter as it warms. The taste is a strong hop flavor with a spicy citrus. Grassy, floral undertone. Very bitter aftertaste. A spicy, citrusy double IPA with notes of pine. Slight hint of Belgian ale spice. Feels fizzier than I expected; dances on the tongue. Somewheat thick, but thirst quenching. For 10%, awfully easy to drink. Lots of character, not overhopped.
4.2 Bottle Pours a hazy orange golden with a diminshing white head. Makes great lacing. Good citrus aroma. Touches of maltiness, spices, and honey. The flavor is crisp and clean. Very hoppy and bitter. The alcohol is well hidden. Has an oily texture. A real good finish with a great aftertaste. This is a real good beer, in the style I love but very crisp and refreshing. This is a really good beer.
3.5 22oz bottle courtesy of phhd, thanks Ethan. Gold/orange pour with a big fluffy white head. Sweet, citrusy aroma with a little maltiness in there. Mild flavor, hops were a bit muted, very easy to drink, the alcohol was very well hidden. Not great, but still pretty good.
3.9 Poured amber with a white head. Aroma of citrus. Lemony citrus. Refreshing.
3.9 22oz bottle. Pours slightly hazy amber, capped with a big, frothy tan head that persists until the last sip. Tantalizing aroma of grapefruity hops, spice, honey, grass, and caramel. Flavor is heavy on citric hops, with grapefruit, orange zest, juniper berries, grass, honey and spice. Hops cling to the palate for a lengthy finish. Really nice double IPA.
3.3 Slightly hazy golden coloured body with a virtually non-existant head. Aroma of sweet honey, curacao, wheat, yeast, malt and some light hops. Medium to Full-bodied; Sweet malty taste complete with apples and oranges noticeable, along with a good spicey yeastiness that lasts. Aftertase stays on the palate perfectly - good tastes throughout. Overall, a nice seasonal beer that shows very well for the sytle. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased at Oliver’s Beverage in Albany, New York on 22 December 2006.
3.3 On tap at Spuyten Duyvil in Brooklyn! A- Pours a cloudy orange hue, soapy bubbles of white head, mild lacing on the glass S- Nose is sweet floral hops and spices, bubblegum and cinnamon, pears and apples, subtle sweetness T- Initial taste is mild citrus hops, sweet caramel malts, apple cider and cinnamon, finishes slick and bitter M- Medium-bodied, watery-oily texture, no carbonation (cask) D- Very sweet DIPA, hops are weak and lacking, decent balance but no real complexity, overall a bit disappointing
3.2 Bottle 650 ml, Appearance: dark ,cloudy amber , light hint of copper , mid light creamy top. Aroma: strong hop like front , muted sweet malts with some finishing alcohol. Touch of grape , fruit sweet plum.6+ Flavor/Palate: mid hop front with bold overpowering hop mid. Bitter hop juice blended into potent alcohol. Strong , intensively hoppy alcoholic boldness.
3.6 Bottle. Pours a dark amber body with a white head. Big earthy grassy hop character grapefruit bitter and tangy with a nice dry grass flavor amongst the alcohol. A bozzy heavily hopped beer, but a step up from the rest of their ipa s.
3.7 Pours a swampy amber with zero head. Aroma heavy on hops, citrus, and a bit of malt. Flavor is extremely heavy on hops, but not as bitter and more thick in the body- characteristic of a DIPA compared to a normal IPA. Really nice palate, sticks to the tongue really nice. The past couple Middle Ages offerings I’ve tasted have shifted my opinion of them for the better. Well done.
4.0 Pours grapefruit amber. With no head. Aroma is pungent hops, sweetness and grapefruit. Flavor is excellent- lots of hard hitting hops. Huge hop character- top notch actually. Palate is thick. Finish is dry with hops.
3.0 Mediocre label. Cloudy, dark honey-colored pour. The penetrating aroma promises a full load of hops, and there are also scents of honey/malt, lemon, and flowers. This brew is bursting with resiny hop and grapefruit pith flavors that practically disinfect the palate. X is a little surly and unbalanced, but I recommend it to people who like to undergo heavy hop treatment. As for myself, I’ll take a Wailing Wench instread.
3.7 Name: Double IPA Date: 10/03/2008 Mode: Bottle Source: Trade Appearance: hazy orange, fine off white head, drippy lace, Aroma: sweet and fruity malt aroma, peppery spicyness, grapefruit rind, Body: creamy body, Flavor: sweet malt flavor, lots of spicy hops with a peppery character, sweet crystal malt, lots of citrus, light balancimg bitterness, Aroma: 7/10; Appearance: 7/10; Flavor: 7/10; Palate: 7/10; Overall: 15/20 Rating: 3.7/5.0 Drinkability: 7/10 Score: ***/4
3.8 Aroma is a unique but pleasing mix of pine tree and grapefruit. All hops in the nose. The appearance is an attractive red/gold, sound white head, good lacing. The flavor is more piney than citrusy, but very good. There is a definite sweetness from mcaramel malts in there as well. The palate is left with a strong hop burn; nice, enduring finish. Very good for this style. This brewer has yet to disappoint me with anything they put out.
3.3 Thanks to meathookjones for the trade. This pours with an inch and a half of head, leaving some nice lace behind on the glass. The nose is of grapefruit, and a significant diacetyl smell. The diacetyl is less noticed in the taste. Juicy, bitter grapefruits are the flavor of the day, very little malt, but that sweetness that I love in a IIPA is definitely there. The mouthfeel is medium bodied for the style, and the drinkability is limited by the acidity. Overall, despite the diacetyl, I like this. I am cutting some slack on the smell score due to the fact that no one in their right mind would want that much diacetyl character in a beer. Edit: After thinking about it overnight, I have decided not to cut any slack on any part of the score. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 11-11-2005 02:39:47
3.5 Pours a two finger white head that fades quickly to a thin layer leaving some lace. Cloudy amber color. Good carbonation and medium bodied. Sweet and hops nose. Flavor is caramel that is balanced with the hops, some bitterness at finish. $4.79 for a 22oz bottle from Yankee Spirits South Attleboro, Ma.
2.9 Pours orange / copper with an off-white head. The aroma has old caramel, mustiness, light hops, cardboard and diacetyl. Medium body with soft gentle carbonation. The flavor starts like the aroma and finishes stale, grainy and sour. This could be an infected bottle. It was not good at all. Hopefully I can try a fresh clean bottle at some point.
3.6 Bottle 22 ounce. Aroma is all hops, very good smelling beer. The tasty is very hoppy but also citric. Very good a but overpowering though. I liked it a lot but wouldn’t buy again soon
3.6 Bottle. Pours orange amber with a nice off white head. Citric and piny aroma. Medium full body. Flavor is hoppy, both citric and pine, with a bit of caramel to balance. Nice lingering bitterness.
