Midnight Sun 2007 Deadly Sins: Sloth

Midnight Sun 2007 Deadly Sins: Sloth

Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work.

SLOTH Belgian-style Imperial Stout is deliberately dark as hell. The pour is slow and sluggish. Its head is menacing, becoming torn and tattered Belgian lace on the sides of the glass as you cautiously consume this brew—sip by insidious sip.

The aroma is sweet from heavy malt and big alcohol with notes of vanilla, coconut and whiskey from the oak. The depth & breadth of roasted malt flavors loiters on the palate while the robust finish lingers, well, forever.

SLOTH...Just add couch.

4.2 Bomber from Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours very dark brn/blk with a slight dark tan head. Aroma is dark chocolaty treacle with bourbon/vanilla. Whiskey even. It is full + bodied. Flavor is really dark treacle, bourbon in significant amount, alcohol/whiskey to be included, and maybe a slight touch of smoke. The flavors are complex and amazing. It is extremely tasty. Incredible.
3.4 650 mL bottle. Black body with a medium khaki head. Smells of heavy roasted malt. A little bourbon. Oak. Dark fruits. Taste is very sharp. Lots of dark fruit. Heavy roasted malt. Sharp dark fruit. Bitter and acrid finish. High carbonation. Not really getting the hype here.
4.2 Tasted from bottle. Pours black with thick khaki head. Aroma is bourbon, cocoa, caramel. Taste is mildly bitter with moderate sweetness. Flavors of bourbon, chocolate, vanilla, dark fruits, caramel, toffee. Really don't get much if any of the Belgian yeast notes. Overall very well done.
3.5 22oz. Aroma is sweet oak, caramel. Taste is roasty malt, oak, slight bourbon, smoke date and raisin
4.0 Big vanilla whiskey coconut treacle marshamallow. Almost all about the barrel, but as the abv is under control - that’s not a bad thing. Smooth, warming - a treat.
4.0 Bottle. Pours black.Maria Aroma and taste are chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, and dark fruits.
4.0 Bottle from Capitol Beer & Tap Room. Pours dark brown with an attractive tan head and a chocolate and treacle aroma. There is a rich chocolate and dark molasses flavor with a dry slightly bitter finish. Nice bourbon trail.
3.7 Black with a light beige head. Aroma is honey, bourbon, graham cracker, chocolate, caramel. Full bodied, sticky mouthfeel, complex on the palate with a slightly sweet, boozy finish. Taste is bourbon, dates, chocolate, Graham cracker, honey.
3.9 Bottle - Sweet marzipan and vanilla boozy chocolate notes. Jet black brown with a nice brown head. Sweet, dark fruit and dark chocolate with a nice silky cocoa finish. As it warms graham cracker and honey.
4.2 Bottle shared by Trevor at Belgium Chimipalooza, cheers. ’Belgian style imperial stout’ from Alaska. Lightly lacing, pale brownish beige, creamy head over a black beer with chestnut edges. Aroma of chocolate sauce, baked banana, fig, coffee liqueur and slight coffee grounds, vanilla, dates, whisky, raisin, leather. Sweet onset, some banana, raisin, date but balanced with a beefy umami accent and a softly sourish undercurrent, softish carbo, thick, oily and slick caramelly malt body quickly turning deeply chocolatey, some yeasty spiciness here and there, toasted bittering ending along with peppery hops and warming, bourbon-like alcohol. Along the same lines as Weyerbacher’s Tiny but ’cleaner’ and more chocolatey.
4.2 Bottle shared at Belgian Chimipalooza, thanks! Black with a beige head. Aroma of malt, chocolate, caramel, fudge, booze, vanilla, wood, bourbon. Flavour is heavy sweet and moderate bitter. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.
4.0 Bottle. Pours a thick rich black with a nice brown head. Aroma of whiskey, malt, and chocolate. Taste is roasted malt, whiskey, dark chocolate, vanilla, dark fruit, and some caramel. Excellent.
4.0 4oz draft at Brouwers. Thick black pour with thick brown head; decent retention and lacing. Aroma: alcohol, chocolate, roast, old hops / light oxidation; pie filling. Tastes pretty good - raisins join the party, lovely sweet chocolate, moderate roast. Mildly astringent, assertively roasty bitter finish. Full body, slick oily texture. Overall: intense, well worth drinking.
4.7 22oz bottle pours a black color with some tan head. Aroma of whiskey and malt. Rich flavors of whiskey, and caramel. Nice hop dankness despite low IBUs.
4.0 Bottle thanks to trade with AkAndy! Pours an opaque black from the bomber with thin lacy brown head that leaves light lace. Aroma of big bourbon barrel notes, vanilla and chocolate sweetness. Taste is a bit more smoky and spicy bit still really big on the bourbon notes. Thick and viscous, soft carbonation, solid.
4.1 Bottle big thanks to Todd. I appreciate it man. Pours a jet black color with a medium beige head. A big sweet fruity roast nose. Rich sweet chocolate, ash, chocolate, bitter dark chocolate especially, whiskey, vanilla. This is really nice. Soft, very flavorful. Drinkable. No heat. A big whiskey flavor but not overwhelming.
4.0 Draft at the source, new version. Opaque dark brown color, brown head with good retention. Aroma of sweet brownies. Taste is boozy chocolate liqueur. Very tasty.
3.7 Draught at the brewery. Pours opaque black with a large, creamy tan head, long retention with good lacing. Aroma is roast and chocolate malt, prunes, tobacco, earthy and woody hops with stone fruits. Flavor is dark chocolate and roast malt, lightly tart dark fruits, light earthy hops and bitterness, brown sugar and a sweet finish. Full body and medium carbonation.
3.8 Draft at brewery, black beer, skiff of walnut colored foam. Aroma molasses and cookies, vanilla, faint dark fruit. Taste molasses and cookies, vanilla, bourbon, roasty toasted barley, oak, hint of coffee. Finish is lingeringly, almost saccharine bittersweet, not in a bad way, just has hang time. Palate is rich and smooth, carbonation moderate.
4.6 Bomber format into a midnight sun globe glass Black with hints of brown and ruby. Lots of dark brown residue on the sides of the glass. Thin dark brown head. Dark Belgian chocolate nose with roast, oak, and lots of dark fruits. Cherry and raspberry for the most part. Taste is dry Belgian chocolate, dry roast, whiskey, tar, tobacco and dark cherry and raspberry. Lots of red wine and grape in the mouth. Lots of tannins. Masterpiece beer. Well balanced. No oxidation in this at all. Full bodied, light carbonation. Complex and just brilliant.
4.1 22 oz. bottle sampled at a local ba tasting notes. Pours dark brown to black in color with a small beige head. The aroma and flavor had roasted malts, Belgian chocolate, molasses, oak, some whiskey character, dark fruits, vanilla, coconut and caramel. Was probably the best one of the set at the time.
4.0 July 1st Sunday. This series was before my time, but jrob21 let me know this these were kind of a big deal back in 2007. Either way was just a hint of oxidation, this really held up nicely. Huge chocolate, malt balls, hint of char and soy, dark ripe fruits. Big, bold, thick.
4.2 Never thought I would see this but thank god I did. Whiskey vanilla aromas. Touch, light of soy sauce flavors. Very smooth and balanced flavor between the barrel and the malt. Roasted malt, milk chocolate rich flavors. So smooth, so nice. Still a really tasty beer.
4.0 Rated on 9-25-2009 at Fort Wayne, IN Gathering. This bottled beer courtesy of jsquire pours a small smooth light brown head with a long retention, opaque body, spotty amounts of lacing, and no carbonation. The Aroma is roasted malt, chocolate, vanilla, and alcohol. The Taste is roasted malt, chocolate, and alcohol. The Palate is tingly and this beer is medium-full bodied. Overall, this beer is very tasty as the flavors come together very well. I recommend trying this beer and it is a beer that I would drink again.
4.2 Bottle shared by Thoroe429. Thanks Mike! The beer is near black and appears viscous and oily. Minimal beige head. The aroma brings roast, oak, lightly sweet. Mild smoke in the aroma with a delicate warming alcohol finish. Relatively full bodied and palate coating. An outstanding example of the style. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 07-07-2012
3.6 Epic tasting beer coming back on the ratings, looking forward to trying a new batch as this is a bit old although was pretty solid, don’t give up much for this batch, but cool to try
4.0 Bottle at epic STL tasting, thanks boys! Pour is deep black with small tan head. Aroma and flavor is full of musty and earthy with hints of cocoa, light alcohol, and notes of faint fruit. Flavor is smooth chocolate and cocoa powder with hints of chocolate and faint coffee. Very nice.
3.5 Huge thanks to AgentZero for making this happen. Served in a Midnight Sun goblet. Pours near-black with a short off-white head and not much in the way of lacing. The nose has a pretty heavy amount of roast with some light barrel character. Some chocolate and just a bit of vanilla in the background. Not getting much from the Belgian yeast at this point. Flavor is similar and fairly muted. Seems a bit oxidized. Heavy malt character with roast and chocolate. A bit undercarbonated. Nice, but just seems to fall flat like it’s well past its prime, unfortunately. Still, very fun to try.
4.2 Another long time want provided by Mike. I can’t think of another stout that I’ve wanted to try more than this. In typical Midnight Sun fashion, Sloth pours pitch black with a small amount of cocoa colored head. Nose is a balance of chocolate and tannins. A good amount of red wine still comes through actually. Flavor is cocoa, red wine, and oak. Mouthfeel is thick and slightly oily, a little thin for MS, light carbonation, and a long finish. Reminds me a lot of Bar Fly actually. It doesn’t have much of the Belgian character I thought it would, but that doesn’t detract from the beer. Solid imperial stout.
4.3 Draft at Tap Root Beer and Mead Social: Poured a thick black sludge with a light brown head. Aroma was complex with dark malts, hints of fruit and woodsy. Taste is a blast of roasted malts, dark fermented fruit, and nice warming booziness finish. Very smooth overall but complex if that makes sense. This beer has held up well and was a pleasure to get a sample of.
