Midnight Sun Arctic Rhino Coffee Porter

Midnight Sun Arctic Rhino Coffee Porter

Inspired by local artist & roaster Michael Allen’s eccentricly-named blend of coffee beans, Midnight Sun’s brewers designed a beer recipe and flavor infusion process that perfectly captures the alluring aroma, satisfying flavor and curious legend of Allen’s Arctic Rhino Coffee Blend.

Arctic Rhino Coffee Porter combines two quintessential Pacific Northwest favorites: coffee and ale. The result is wonderfully romantic and robust--a duel-fueled porter that melds charismatic dark malt with freshly roasted coffee beans.

3.8 Tasted from draft. Pours a very dark brown almost black with beige head. Good lacing. Strong coffee aroma. Taste is also big time coffee flavor much more than most porters, more stout like. Some mild dark chocolate flavors and a hint of dark fruits. Moderately bitter. Finishes with a very dry mouthfeel. Overall a great porter.
3.9 Bottle at first "Er klopt iemand op de deur" tasting aka EBT3. Thx to everyone for sharing today’s beers! APPEARANCE: black beer, small unstable beige head. NOSE: coffee, chocolate, vanilla. TASTE: coffee, chocolate, vanilla, nice!
3.3 Thick dark brown head; black beer, shards of lace. Roasted, coffee, USA hops, rosewater, dates. Coffee flavour - and precious little else. Some chocolate in the finish if I search well. Well-carbonated, quite slick, maybe medium bodied. Not very heartlfting, really. Halfway decent porter.
3.8 65 cl. bottle sampled @ "Er Klopt Iemand Op De Deur" Samson & Gert Bierproeving I. Thanks to tderoeck! Spare creamy mocha bubbles on the size, oil black. Very bitter roasted coffee, chocolate, molasses, leather, harsh roast, cocoa, vanilla, charcoal, very harsh coffee roast, brutal, too much for me. Surprisingly thick & syrupy for ABV, seems almost double of what it is. Too brutal roast for my liking but not a bad beer.
3.8 Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a dark brown almost black colored body with a finger and a half white foamy head that clings a bit with the lacing left behind. The smell had a nice strong roasted coffee powering in front of a light bitter hoppiness, some light malt coming through as it warms. The taste was mostly bitter but balances a bit with a decent malt presence, coffee aftertaste, dry finish. The palate was about a light to medium, somewhat sessionable for an American Porter. Carbonation seems a bit stronger than most American Porters I’ve had but not overbearing. Overall, this was a pretty good American Porter that I would have again.
3.5 Bottle from Sugaya. 5% a thick dark pour with lots of roasty reddish tinged head. The nose is mostly roasted coffee notes. The flavor profile is coffee, roasty & smooth.
3.2 22 ounce bottle. A gusher. Pours almost black with a huge tan head. Aroma of coffee, malt, and chocolate. Taste is coffee, roasted malt, chocolate, and some dark fruit. Not a coffee drinker, so this was not something I took to.
3.4 Bomber from Beer and Wine Haus, Seaside, OR. Roasted malt and coffee aroma. Pours black with a thick, light brown head and good lacing. Roasted malt flavor to start. Rich coffee finish that is quite smooth and not overpowering. Good coffee beer.
3.5 Bottle split at Bruce’s pad, acquired from Wholefoods in the Bowery, 16/01/14. A slow gushing affair, this naughty chap pours light black with a good sized tan head that dissipates to a swirl and edgework. Nose carries a big coffee hit, roasty, chocolate, dark toffee fudge, vanilla, ultimately let down a notch or two by a little soap. Taste comprises earthy cocoa, good espresso hit, toffee fudge, mineral bite. Medium bodied, overcooked prickly carbonation. Solid coffee porter, could have been very good without the light soap on the nose and the carbonation issues.
3.6 Bottle thanks to Colin. It pours near black with a thick tan head. The nose is roasted malt, toast, wood, dark chocolate, peppery, jasmine tea and parma violets. The taste is smooth, hard roast, coffee, mild acidity, earthy, toast, good bitterness and some marshmallow with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Pretty alright stuff if truth be told.
3.2 Bottle cheers to Colin. Gushed a little bit but we were ready. Dark brown with a big, frothy khaki head. Nose is rich and bitter espresso, plenty of pepper and chilli spice, vanilla, touch herbal and mustard. Odd. Taste is very aggressively bitter forward with loads of espresso! A touch grassy, lemon rind, pepper, dark chocolate and salted caramel coming through. Very spice driven with big bitter astringency. A bit all over the place. Not my kind of beer
3.0 16th January 2013 Tasting at the pad of the ever gracious Bruce. Opaque dark brown beer, big medium-tan head. This was a mild gusher. Palate is airy and light, fine carbonation. Light airy malt cream, touch of tangy dark malt and mellow roast. Mild coffe. Smooth airy finish. It’s fine if a bit unexciting.
3.7 Bottle shared in London - big thanks to Colin. Mild gusher. Pours rich brown with a large, frothy tan head. Lots of burnt coffee on the nose, some cocoa, hints of red chili. Light to medium sweet flavor with burnt earth, rich cocoa, moderate bitterness. Medium bodied with fine, massaging carbonation. Pretty good balance to finish with dry chocolate, modest earthy bitterness, raisins, slight coffee. Nice, dynamic porter.
1.8 Bottle @ Armin’s apartment, courtesy of arminjewell. Pours a deep brown appearance with a stupid crazy big brown head. Celery, veggie, bland, lightly roasty aroma. Stir fry, celery, bubbly, chocolate, green pepper flavor. Horribly fucked up.
2.3 Pour out of 22 oz bottle, HUGE gusher. Dark black pour, slight tan head, aroma has nothing, some slight veggies, slight caramel, roast notes but not much else. Taste is a mix of celery, slight earth, hints of dms, finishing watery, bland. Wow this is awful.
4.3 Very nice. Strong coffee aroma and flavor atop a solid roasty, non-sweet porter and decidedly not stout base. A session at 5%. B+
3.2 (22oz bottle) dark brown, lasting dark tan head. Nose is a bit metallic, wet coffee grounds, and cream. Taste of old coffee, bit acrid, very toasty. Well carbonated and dry.
3.7 Looks like coffee, tastes like coffee, smells a bit like coffee. Finish is nice and dry, different from the over-sweetness of other coffee beers I have had.
3.6 Very roasty porter, thin but tasty I really like it, very very coffee flavored beer
3.9 Pours a midnight dark black with a huge java head. Nose is malt and deep roasted coffee. Taste is all malt, chocolate and coffee, sweet and drinkable. Finishes in the same tasting notes , nice porter. Quaff Score 7 / 10
3.2 Pours black with a brown head and aroma of roasted malt and coffee. Taste is roasty, with coffee and sweet chocolate coming through leading to a dry, roasted finish. Nice coffee porter
3.7 Dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, vanilla. Creamy mouthfeel, smooth and sweet on the palate with a coffee finish. Taste is coffee, chocolate, dates, vanilla.
3.5 Bottle share. Deep brown, almost black, with ruby highlights. Aroma of dark chocolate, coffee, molasses. Taste is a good balance of chocolate and coffee, molasses. Nice dryness.
4.4 Bottle. Pours a near black color with a smallish light tan head on it. Nose is very roasty with a lot of coffee in there and some dark elements to it. Taste has some slightly bitter elements to it with a lot of the roasting and coffee coming through. Very pleasant drink.
3.7 Taste from share at Avery release. Big dark roast coffee nose, some vanilla, and sweeter dark malt. Bit thin, but otherwise a solid porter with full on coffee flavor. Not overly burnt or bitter coffee taste and good balance with sweeter porter style.
3.8 Bottle shared with friends at the Avery release. Pour is pitch black with a frothy tan head and great lacing. Huge coffee, dark chocolate, toasted malt, graham crackers, light vanilla, a touch of bread, and earthy hops in the aroma. Taste is big coffee light green peppers, roasty malt, vanilla, brown sugar, toffee, a touch of wood, earthy hops, and a touch of grass with a roasted bitter finish. Creamy mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Really nice coffee porter.
3.3 22oz bottle, which I’m pretty sure I got from radarsock. Shared with b3shine and brew3crew. Dark brown, near black color. Good thin brown head, but no lace really sticks. Medium body, maybe a little light. Kind of soft, lighter carbonation, lightly dry texture. Light chewiness to the body. Nice bigger coffee, moderate roast, light hint of chocolate, little bit of dark fruit. Moderate bitter taste, minimal sweet. Solid coffee porter, big on the coffee, I appreciate that
3.6 Bomber to snifter (thanks DrSilverworm). Looks good; a dark cola with beef lacing. Smells solid; dark malt, coffee, and roast. Tastes like it smells with a solid mouthfeel. Enjoyable.
3.9 Bottle from Ashburn Wine Shop. Pours black with 2 inches of khaki foam. Big roasted coffee notes on the nose. Big brewed coffee on the tongue. Lots of carbonation. The beer literally runs from you as you drink it. Nice!
3.3 From ZDK’s gathering. The aroma is smooth coffee, some roast. The appearance is brown/black, tan head. The flavor is almost pure coffee. The finish is roasted coffee, pine. Medium in body. The coffee drowns this one out.
