Midnight Sun Cohoho Imperial IPA

Midnight Sun Cohoho Imperial IPA

When the loveable "hopheads" at Humpy’s Great Alaskan Alehouse requested a winter version of alehouse favorite Sockeye Red IPA, our brewers instinctively spawned CoHoHo Imperial IPA.

CoHoHo begins with generous measures of pale two-row and specialty malts along with spirit-boosters like brown sugar and honey. Hefty doses of Cascade, Centennial and Simcoe hops beautifully balance that outrageous malt bill while juniper berries heighten the festive character of this exuberant beer.

4.1 22 oz bomber. The beer pours to a medium amber color with a slightly off white medium head. The aroma is sweet with honey, resin, a little caramel. The taste is sweet up front with the honey & juniper berries prominent in the first taste, followed by a strong malt backbone & a medium bitter finish. Overall an a good DIPA.
3.9 Reviewed from notes. She pours a dark reddish color and leaves the same color body with slightly copper edges and a one finger white foamy head that dies immediately. Light lacing sticks to the glass. The smell has a floral malty hoppiness with some orange zest, and grapefruit and honey. The taste has a super malty covered hoppiness in the front and then backed up with a decent hoppy bitterness, long lingering citrus yet hoppy aftertaste, dry finish. On the palate, its about a medium, perhaps somewhat sessionable, and the carbonation seems to be a bit smoother than most DIPA’s, but I’m not complaining. Overall, this is not a bad DIPA, but I’m just surprised how smooth this one rolls around in my mouth to be a true DIPA. Its like its just too good to be true unless this is old.
3.1 (tap) clear amber colour with a small tan head; aromas of fruit; clean, refreshing, bit austery flavour with a long, strong bitter finish
4.3 On tap at Monk’s Kettle. Hazy super-dark amber (or brown) with a tan head. Intoxicating hop aroma; citrus, floral, pine, some raisin. Taste is great: resin, citrus, caramalt sweetness, moderately bitter finish. Very nice.
3.5 Tap at rattle n hum, new york. Dark amber color, some white head. Aroma is basic hops and fruits. Balanced easy going body, hops, fruits, malts.
3.4 Burnt copper color, looks like bourbon Smell and taste was extremely malty, hops and sweet fruit. Not very good
3.3 Bottle. Brown pour with tan head. Honey and spice aromas without much hop tone. Honey and berry flavors with hints of grassy hops.
4.3 Pours a hazy yellow. Has a sweet citrus, mango and hop aroma. Has a Nice sweet citrus and spice taste with a smooth, slightly bitter, hop aftertaste.
3.8 Poured from a bottle it is a clear golden Color with a slight head. The aroma is citrus and the taste is of grapefruit and lingers on the palate
3.7 From a 22 oz bottle shared at home. Pours a clear amber with an off white head. Intense hoppy nose. Flavors of citrus and spruce with some sweet honey notes. Medium bodied, high carbonation, bitter finish.
3.8 Bomber half off on clearance must be about 11 months old. Pours a hazy copper color with a thick off white head that leaves great lacing. Smells of honey, pine, grapefruit and caramel. Tastes of all the same things in the smell. Mouthfeel is slick and oily with good carbonation and a dry finish. It held up pretty well for being almost a year old. Hops are still pretty noticeable but would like to see how it tastes fresh. Might rerate this when this years batch comes out.
2.6 Old bottle purchased from the brewery over 8 months from when it was brewed. Horrible malty stale DIPA crap. Don’t sell old IPA!
3.3 A really sweet smelling beer with honey and brown sugar dominating the nose. Good lacing on this pour even though the head is insignificant. A clear and dark color almost like a winter ale. Malts give the color. Taste is dominated by honey and molasses reminiscent of a malty ale and not really an IPA. In fact not much of hops at all. Very smooth palate but also a little boring since I was expecting an IPA. Not a bad drink if thought to be a regular old pale ale.
3.8 In the glass it has a dark copper color. The aroma has some toasted hops and malts. It also has a touch of sweetness. Taste has some piney hops up front with some citrus. On the backend there is some sweetness like caramel. Good finish.
4.1 22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours crystal clear reddish copper color with a nice 2 finger dense cream colored head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of orange zest, grapefruit, orange rind, pineapple, lemon zest, juniper, floral, light pine, caramel, honey, brown sugar, grass, and herbal earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of malt and hop notes. Taste of big orange zest, grapefruit, pineapple, orange rind, lemon zest, juniper, floral, grass, caramel, honey, brown sugar, pine, and herbal earthiness. Moderate amount of citrus bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, citrus zest, pineapple, juniper, floral, caramel, honey, brown sugar, grass, pine, and herbal earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice flavor balance and complexity; with a great balance of malt/hoppiness; with zero cloying flavors present after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a creamy and fairly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent DIPA. Very nice hop and malt flavor balance and complexity; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.
3.3 Bottle - Honey, sugar and bread on the nose. Clear amber with a nice rich head. I get the hoppy bitterness and sweet notes from the malts and honey. Tastes much more like a hopped red than anything else.
3.7 Draft at Chuck’s 85th, Seattle. Dark mahogany. Very juicy IPA, hides 8% well. Rich woody malts, juicy with bittering finish. Slight pine, red fruit, very rich malt forward with big juicy pine-hop balance. Good, slightly different style IPA. Reading now, a ’winter’ IPA makes sense. Not going to be a favorite of mine though.
2.1 Bottle - I hope this wasn’t fresh. Poured a hazy dark brown adequate head and lacing. Nose of honey, caramel, brown sugar. Taste was more of the same. Malt bomb. Some hop bitterness, zero hop flavor. Butter crumbles.
3.8 22 oz. bottle- Pours clear dark brown to red with a beautiful creamy light tan head. The aroma is hop bitterness, malt that imparts an earthiness. The taste is malty caramel, hoppy bitterness, spicy, alcohol. Body is medium, carbonation is full. Overall really not for me, you start putting heavy malts in my IPA’s, that is not for me, too much of everything, except honey, that could have balanced everything out, but I didn’t even taste any honey, and I wish they would have dialed back the malt. I get it is an imperial red IPA, but still, too heavy!
3.8 I can’t believe that I haven’t had this beer before. It is right in my wheelhouse. Light with fruit punch like notes. Bitterness is light and the beer has a nice sparkle to it.
3.4 Dark brown..reddish tint pour into snifter..very sweet malt nose with dried figs..fig jam.and notes of the honey and molasses..caramels..leaves nice lacing and has a clean mouthfeel with a well hidden abv..a little too malty sweet for me..prefer doubles to have more of an upfront hop presence..sweetness should be toned down..perhaps the result of the honey and brown sugar..interesting however and always nice to try something from Alaska..
3.7 Bomber from Bottleworks on my PASS trip, shared by ck1. Pours brownish with a white head. Aroma has malt, pine and citrus. Taste is of sweet brown sugar, citrus. Fairly smooth. Finishes a very good blend of sweet and bitter. It grew on me.
3.3 A - pours effervescent mahogany with high fluffy white head. Very sticky lacing. S - very ipa. Floral, soapy ipa. Strong caramel malt backbone. Brown sugar and dates. M - simple malt heavy ipa. Full bodied. Abrupt transitions. Malty then bitter. Lingering hop bite. T - caramel malts up front and throughout. But a strong bitter floral, soapy, and cascade hops. Lingering hop bite. O - malt heavy bitter ipa. 6
4.0 Bomber poured into glass. Big thanks to my sis for picking this up in San Diego for me. Hoppy with slightly sweet hints of honey, citrus and malts. Much easier to drink then I was anticipating. Another home run from Midnight Sun!
4.1 Bottle from South Bay Drugs: I must say, this is the second bottle in a row from Midnight Sun that opens with a huge burst of gas sound and vapors. Created a firm layer of patchy foam head while the liquid was a dark tea brown color with mahogany tint. As for the aroma, it has a barley wine scent and a hint of citrus, berries, brown sugar and maybe it’s just my nose, but I smell molasses syrup. The flavor is rich with sweet sugary malts that boast of brown sugar with the slightest hint of fruit in the distant background. This is really good experimental combination of ingredients.
3.8 Lucky boy that I am, there’s a store 40 minutes away in ny that carries midnight sun. My first sample of that brewery offerings and a nice one. Aroma is a none woodsy rosemary and other garden herbs with some pine and sweet biscuit in there. The flavor is supremely earthy in the deep wilderness, surrounded by old growth and smelling the fresh and damp fallen leaves as you walk kind of way. There is a brightness in the finish that just makes this a palate cleansing pleasure and leaves a taste of green wood and wet simcoe. The mouthfeel knows it’s solid and so will you. A seemingly confidently brewed beer that I am so glad to have tried and enjoyed. Thank you Midnight Sun. 2012 22 oz.
3.8 Bottle. Pours muddy brown with light tan head. Nose and taste of caramel malt, dank hops, wet grass, citrus and grapefruit rind. Medium body. Bitter finish.
3.3 A-- Poured a dark golden brown.Medium pour resulted in a two finger light brown head. Very fluffy head, left all sorts of lacing through drinking. Light on carbonation. S-- Honey and juniper berries jump right out. Get a bit of brown sugar candied grapefruit. Very holiday smelling beer. T-- Not a huge taste but get juniper, Carmel and a bit of grapefruit. M-- Get a lot of pine in the mouth, feels very spice like as well. Finishes dry and crisp due to the honey with a little pine finish as well. There is a little bit of brown sugar sweetness in the front. D-- Quite different I thought with the junpier and honey but it worked well.
3.8 Interesting highly malty double IPA. May be a bit old since its a winter seasonal. High sweetness with what appears to be the taste of residual sugars, but heavy citrus hops and fruityness cut the sweetness. Nice brew.
3.7 first off, HUGE thanks to mah negro Reynolds314, very sweet malty sweet body with a light hop flavor and decent hop bittering. Aight and interesting take on the style. Brown sugar comes through good, not so muchthe honey or juniper berries
