Midnight Sun Fallen Angel Golden Strong Ale

Midnight Sun Fallen Angel Golden Strong Ale

Fallen Angel Golden Ale, first brewed on
6-6-6 [JUN 6, 2006], is named in the tradition of Belgian golden strong ales--after the devil himself. We call this beer our "original sin" because it spawned our 2007 Deadly Sin beer series.

Midnight Sun’s Fallen Angel Golden Ale is a traditional Belgian-style golden strong ale--deep gold in color with tiny, conniving bubbles forming a very thick, meticulous head. Effervescent and crisp, this delicious ale tempts the palate with apple, pear and a little earthy mustiness. Its beauty and brightness is angel-like in appearance but the devil in is its strength.

With its introduction in 2006 and its immediate cult following, Fallen Angel is now brewed and released on a more frequent basis.

3.8 Hazy orange pour with a thin head. Notes of citrus. Not sure that I can compare this to another. It is unique and good.
3.2 (tap) cloudy yellow colour with a small white head; aromas of lilies; balanced flavour with a long light bitter finish
4.0 Great hazy and vibrant orange coloured body with a thick, three centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of yeast, honey, wheat and a very nice curacao and bubble gum sweetness. Medium-bodied; Strong yeast and wheat flavour with a great sweetness of honey, caster sugar and even some light fruits. Aftertaste shows a good wheat and yeast vibe with a fairly good complexity, some coriander seed notes and a little bit of other spices. Overall, another great beer from the brewery - and of course, makes me happy to be in Alaska again! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Brown Jug in Anchorage (Northern Lights Blvd), Alaska on 22-May-2013 sampled later in the evening on 22-May-2013 in my hotel room here in Anchorage.
3.3 Fairly typical for the style. The aroma is fruity, peper. The color is gold, sl hazy, white head. The flavor is like the aroma, sweet fruit, spicy pepper, yeasty. The finish is peppery, spicy. Medium in body. There is nothing wrong with this beer. It is just really unremarkble.
3.4 Bottle. Pours orange gold with white head. Nose and taste of yeast, lemongrass, spice and lemon bread. A little spicy malt and booze in the finish. Medium body.
3.5 Pour out of 22 oz bottle, hazy orange pour with rocky fluffy white head, aroma brought notes of bright esters, some phenolic notes, some biscuit, bready notes, hints of grass, earth, spicy notes come through as well, touch of grain. Taste is a mix of white fruits, sweet biscuit, honey notes come through, phenolic and esters with some spice, coriander, hints of earth, grassy tones, finishing sweet, slightly bitter.
3.3 Grumligt gul i färgen högt vitt skum. Doftar smörpopcorn, majs, gräs, syrligt med citrus, jästigt. Smakar jästsigt, syrligt, citrus, gräs, söt ton av gula frukter. Torr avlutning
3.3 Pours a lightly hazed, shimmering golden color with soapy white head. Really a nice looking brew. Aromas were sweet fruits, pepper, flowers, and more hop notes. Taste was toasted malt, citrus hops, pine, and some sweet caramel toffee at the end. Medium bodied with lots of carbonation. Good belgian.
3.8 Tap @ The BeerMongers... Poured golden/amber with a moderate white head. Solid Belgian Golden here. Thick mouthfeel, bitterness and earthy hops with a hefty dose of malt sweetness, bready characters and yeast spice. Bright and crisp, super clean.
3.7 On tap. Clear yellow with a fluffy white head. Fruity, berry like, citrus, and honey bread aroma and taste. Good.
3.6 A - pours hazy straw with 1 finger fluffy head. S - funky Belgian yeasts, over ripe apple, lemon zest, pepper. M -effervescent, nice medium bodied. Full palate. Nice alcohol warmed end. Very nice crisp, drinkable. T - Belgian yeasts, straw, pineapple, lemon zest. O - nice rounded mellow Belgian. 7-
3.5 22 oz. bottle. Pours a clear dark golden color with a medium sized, lasting off white head. The aroma has mild fruit notes, Belgian yeast, mild sweetness, with some herbal notes. The flavor is fruity, citrus, doughy malts, Belgian yeast with a moderate sweetness and a light spicy note.
3.4 pours a cloudy orange-yellow with a lasting small white head, and very good lacing. smell is of yeast, a bit of sour fruit, a little spice, and somewhat musty. taste is of sour fruits, malt, and yeast. ends dry and a little tart.
3.6 Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly lasting. Body is dark yellow. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain), lightly to moderately hoppy (herbs), lightly to moderately yeasty (cobwebs), with notes of lemon zest Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation, moderately to heavily alcoholic. Funny, this is way more like a real tripel than their silly Panty Peeler beer. A solid brew that more or less sucked back in 2012. The initial sweetness vanishes quickly in the finish, and the yeasty tartness (and yeasty aroma) is very Belgian. Probably reasonably accurate to say this is Midnight Sun’s version of Duvel. Lean and mean, as it should be.
4.3 Poured beautifully out of Growler. golden with a white foam head, It is a gorgeous looking beer, citrus aroma. feels great on the tongue
3.5 bottle. pours duh golden with smoth white head. aroma of hay and hop. taste was super smooth not overly yeasty or hoppy abv hidden big time
3.5 Bottle: Poured a golden color with a creamy off white colored head. Aroma is sweet caramel, floral, and fruit. Taste is a strong floral upfront with clove and spice, transitions into sticky sweet malt or fruit. Leaves the tongue wanting more.
4.3 Originally reviewed: 9/21/09. Poured into my tulip glass a murky orange/gold with a big frothy off-white head on top. Retention is minimal, and there’s little lacing. Small dark chunks float throughout this brew. I’m guessing it’s yeast. Smells slightly peppery and yet sweet. Mild fruity tones waft out like peach and nectarine. Nice. The mouth is bubbly and crisp, but not harsh in any way. Carbonation level is spot on. This is a tamer version of a Belgian Pale from my experience. The yeasty quality that I find in most is muted; it’s pleasant. Flavors of honey and nectarines are the main players here. This a wonderful fruit-forward Belgian Pale that I am honored to have tried.
3.3 Poured into a snifter. Big thanks to Bilbosnuts for this. 4.0 A: Hazed yellow-orange-brown color. Two fingers of frothy off-white head. Retention is decent and moderate amounts of lacing left. 4.0 S: Quite earthy with a good amount of hay, dirt, and rotting wood. Moderate peppery spiciness, lightly sugary, flowery and earthy hops, and a light citrus. Peach and apple fruitiness. 3.5 T: A good bit like the nose. Peppery spice, hay, earthy, woody. Moderate yeastines, lightly sugary with earthy hop flavor. Peach and apple fruitiness. 3.5 M: Lighter medium body. Good active carbonation. Spritzy, but could be more so. Lightly creamy and could use some more of that too. 3.5 D: Another tasty beer by MS. They never let me down. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 04-11-2012 23:56:22
3.3 Bottle from Healthy Spirits into a Midnight Sun goblet. Pours a beautiful golden color with a massive fluffy white head that sticks around for 15+ minutes. Loads and loads of lacing on the way down. The beer itself is perfectly clear with plenty of visible carbonation bubbles for the duration. Unfortunately, the rest of the beer isn’t quite as good. The nose brings some very light fruit notes plus a touch of alcohol and some nice phenols. Not much depth or complexity. The flavor is quite similar. Some fruit and pepper there, but the yeast isn’t expressive enough. Body is light-medium with high carbonation and an odd dryness to the finish. It’s not quite crisp given how high in carbonation it is. As it warms, this appears to be a bit of graininess and accompanying tannins. Overall, this is just okay, though extraordinarily impressive in its Duvel-like appearance.
3.8 bomber from matt 10/20/11. hazy honey tinted yellow with a soapy white head and lots of clingy lacing. the nose is fairly citrusy... orange along with loads of herbaceous-ness....fennel, grass, apricot jam, vanilla, spiciness and esters. the flavor is the same but very spicy and dry with a bitterish yeasty finish. it is kept quite drinkable from prickly carbonation and spiciness. 7/4/7/4/16
3.8 Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured a cloudy amber color with an average frothy off-white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy complex hop and dough aroma. Medium to full body with a slick texture and lively carbonation. Medium to heavy yeast sweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a very good beer.
3.7 Hazy yellow body with white disapating head. Good grassy notes. Belgian doesn’t overpower
3.8 Bomber from some unremembered location in SF, shared with ma famille. MS has usually nailed this style, and that’s very much the case here. Bright deep golden pour with a healthy carbonation. Nose is quite fragrant, initially with a wallop of yeasty esters but settling quickly into a fairly complex melange of spice, dry hops, bready notes, and a touch of fruit. Pleasantly prickly mouthfeel brings out these elements nicely to taste, and there’s perhaps a bit more candi malt than the nose promises. But it’s not at all cloying and is in fact healthily bracing in the way a nice Duvel can be.
3.9 Bottle: Poured a lightly hazy blonde color ale with a large pure white foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma consists of semi-sweet Belgian style malt backbone with light fruity ester. Taste is also an interesting mix between some semi-sweet Belgian-style malt with nice attenuation level with some fruity notes Body is quite full with good level of carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very well done with nice drinkable feature.
3.2 In short: A sweet and fruity Belgian blonde ale like some many others. Just ok. How: Bottle 22oz. Consumed approximately 6 to 8 months after purchase. Bottle sent to me by after4ever, thanks a lot Tom The look: Cloudy blonde body topped by a medium white head In long: Nose has the usual suspects of a Belgian blonde ale (fruity esters of bananas, pineapples and others) but also a noticeable soapy component. Taste is mostly sweet and fruity, sugary apples, sugary bananas, sugary other fruits. Plenty of crisp pale and crystal malts. There is also a strong citric/lemony component that is actually quite fitting to lighten up this otherwise overly sweet beer. Overall it is ok, I was able to drink the bomber but this not something I need to drink again. I don’t know what a Fallen Angel is supposed to be, because thank God I don’t believe in spiritual beings.
3.2 Shared bottle at the Davis Beer Shoppe in Davis, CA. Yellow with a huge white head. Had a light sweet malty flavor, but was overpowered by the large amount of carbonation. Not bad, but not great.
3.9 22oz bottle pours cloudy yellow with a fine bubbled white head. Nose has some sharpness, some citrus and crisp, sweet candy sugar, but also a sweet, doughy softness from the yeast. The taste starts with a slight fruitiness before giving way to the biscuity malts and Belgian yeasts. The finish has more of the Tropical fruit. The mouth feel is clean and nicely carbonated but still goes down very, very smooth. This is yet another good offering from Midnight sun, a highly drinkable Belgian with almost undetectable 8% alcohol presence. A little less body than a typical Belgian Strong. But very nice.
3.7 22 oz. bottle. Pours a mostly clear gold with a moderate white head that lasted through the first third of the glass and left partial lace. Pleasant aroma of malts, candi sugar, and some mildly spicy Belgian yeast. The flavor is similar with some crackery malt, candi sugar sweetness (mild) and a bit of spicy Belgian yeast. Mild bitterness at the finish. Medium bodied and fairly well-rounded. Enjoyable.
3.3 Bottle from DBS. Aroma is light, dry Belgian sugar. Lots of carbonation and thick white head. The carbonation really took away from the light flavor and was considerably dry. Good beer.
