4.1 22oz bomber from Holiday Wine Cellar. Pours a pale and cloudy. Citrus and mango fruit nose. Bold flavors of grapefruits and peach. The wheat must make the malts more delicate, which seems to mix better with the bitterness. Spicy bite in the finish. Very refreshing for such a big beer. Damn good!
2.8 Bottle @ Steve’s house, courtesy of arminjewell. Pours a hazy golden orange appearance with a thin white head. Soapy herbal hoppy, a touch tropical fruity, tangerine aroma. Fairly bitter, quite soapy, light citrusy, grassy, orange flavor. Bleh.
3.1 Pour out of 22 oz bottle, hazy orange pour with thin white head, thanks Aaron! Aroma brought notes of soap, caprylic acid notes, with hints of white fruits, hints of oak, slight grass, hints of orange peel. Taste is a mix of white fruit, lots of caprylic acid, hints of white fruit, slight grass, orange, finishing fairly bitter, slightly soapy. Too bad.
3.8 Draft. Pours a slightly cloudy amber copper color with a slight off white head. Medium mouthfeel. Biscuit and pine like aroma. Nice lacing. Sweet citrus like start. Nice resin like citrus rind hop taste. Decent.
3.5 Draught @ Toronado, San Francisco, CA Pours cloudy deep golden with a white head. Aroma has notes of malt, wheat, citrus, grape and orange. Taste is medium sweet and medium bitter with a long citrus, orange and bitter finish. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.
3.2 On tap at Tornado, SF. Pours golden with a small white head. Aroma of citrus hops, some cooked vegetables an malt. Flavor is sweet and fruity with some herbal notes, citrus and malt. Medium body, average carbonation.
3.0 On tap at Toronado. It’s a hazy orange colored beer topped by a small, white head leaving curtains. The aroma is fruity, sweet and lightly grassy and spiced. Sweet flavor with some pale malts and fruityness. Some bitterness, but initially and in the end. Medium body, pleasant carbonation. Quite bitter finish actually. Not the most interesting beer of the day, but drinkable indeed. 130804
3.9 Vacation 2011 - Seattle and Olympic National Park 8/13/2011: Midnight Sun Hop Dog Double Wheat IPA... Aroma: Dried candied pineapple, hint of papaya, and tones of citrus. Appearance: Hazy, deep gold color with a frothy beige-colored head. Flavor: Chewy toffee maltiness; lots ofhops and then some more candied grapefruit peel, pineapple, fuzzy peach; smooth, creamy wheat; moderate bitterness level throughout; balanced bittersweet; the alcohol makes itself known, but enhanced the overall flavor. Palate: Medium-full in body; thick, mellow, and smooth; creamy flavor and texture. Overall: Drinks BIG (seems bitter than 8% ABV); This is a antastic beer! Draught (pint; 8.0% ABV) at Tap House Gill in Seattle, WA. Rating #127 for this beer.
3.1 In short: A somewhat sugary, somewhat boozy and very bitter-sharp blond ale. Just ok. How: Bottle 22oz. Consumed approximately one month after purchase, a bottle brought to me by my man Jay. The look: Slightly cloudy orange-golden body topped by a medium white head. In long: Nose is sharp, white grapefruits, pineapples, some grass. Taste is even sharper. A crisp crackery malt backbone (it feels wheat but less wheat than with most so-called White IPAs), some residual sugars and then a truckload of high alpha-acid hops. Bitter white grapefruits, lemons and such. Alcohol is too apparent for an 8% brew and adds a bite to the already very sharp bitter finish. I really dig wheat-IPAs, I usually overrate this bastard style, but this one lacked the true wheat ale feeling, was too boozy, not refreshing enough, aggressive. Overall it was just ok. Not saying a beer like this cannot be enjoyed, I like a Sweet IPAs as much as the next guy, I really do, but I don’t like the next guy, this dude has a serious attitude problem, I don’t like sweet IPAs.
3.7 Bottle share. Hazy orange. Aroma of pine and caramel. Rye. Taste is candy malt.
3.4 A - pours hazy golden straw with 1 finger quickly dissipating white head. S - citrus, wheat, and light alcohol. Funk and lemon zest. M - light bodied simplistic but pleasant palate. Lingering sun tea bitters. T - soapy and lemon zest, grapefruit, up front. Sun tea bitters, wheat, orange and zest. Lingering sweety malty end. O - simple drinkable malt heavy. Drinkable. 6+
3.8 Location: 22 oz bottle from Whole Foods-Bowery, 12/30/12, IIPA Rating #150 Aroma: The nose has pineapple, orange, and grapefruit mostly, with some underlying malty notes Appearance: A slightly hazy orange colored beer with a small, frothy white head that leaves light lace Flavor: The taste is a little sweet, with lots of citric fruity flavors, and a medium-plus hop bitterness Palate: Medium bodied, with a smooth, slightly sticky feel, soft carbonation, and a lightly dry finish Overall Impression: I thought this was a pretty solid citrus-forward, almost acidic example of an IIPA. I didn’t really find much noticeable wheat here, mostly just the citric hops and light, underlying maltiness. Maybe you could say it’s a touch too one-dimensional, as those citrusy flavors really dominate the beer, but I still really enjoyed drinking it.
3.8 Very nice citrusy lemony wheat DIPA. Lightly tart with nice medium bitterness and very little sweetness. Great beer from a great brewery.
3.7 At diciccos it says it’s a summer beer but it doesn’t taste old. Tastes very wheaty, great bru
3.5 Bottle from South Bay Drugs: Created a thick and foamy head that looked like a patch of shaving cream on top of a golden liquid. As for the nose, there is a scent of organic hops and malt that are rather well balanced in aroma. The flavor is mild with a taste of grainy bread like malts and also a taste of organic hops that come across bitter yet subtle. Certainly an interesting beer and concept with the recipe, but nothing I would rave and rant about to my friends who haven’t had Midnight Sun before.
3.8 750ml poured into glass. Clear and crisp pour, golden-ish brown with minimal head. More citrus then hops in the aroma. The flavor is geared towards the hops and is damn bitter. Nice beer to say the least.
3.5 Bottle. Pours cloudy apricot orange with white head. Nose/taste of peach, apricot, wheat malt, banana, yeast and bitter orange peel. Finishes bitter peel and chalky wheat malt. Medium body.
3.7 pours a cloudy amber-orange with heavy sediment, a small off-white head, and good lacing. smell is of caramel, hops, yeast, and some malt. taste is smooth, hops add a nice bitterness, wheat, malt, caramel, and a little sweetness in the back. ends smooth and bitter.
3.4 Bottle: Poured a orange to dirty brown with a lacing two finger off white head. Aroma is somewhat unexpected fruit and hops. Taste is very weird with that hops bittering upfront yet a mellow veggie and malt finish. There’s a drying finish on the tongue.
3.6 From bottle purchased in norcal. Hazy golden pour thick ass head. Grassy floral aroma with a very bitter taste.
3.5 Bottle; poured a orange tinted gold color with a big frothy head. Aroma of wheat, Belgian yeast, earth, citrus and light notes of fruit. Very much like a Belgian IPA. Flavor was fairly bold. Alots of hopping and yeast/wheat notes. These fusion beers are not normally my style, yet this was well done. Alcohol was well hidden for the most part. Palate was ok.
3.6 On tap at Gourmet Haus. Loads of grass, citrus and manure on the aroma....places me in a summer meadow instantly. Beautiful hazy orange with white head and nice lacing. Taste is surprising smooth as the wheat makes itself known. Nice citrus and earth. Palate starts thin, medium is chewy and falls away quickly. Bitterness throughout. Citrus leaves it late. Late glass aroma is mostly citrus.
4.1 Bottle purchased from Wally’s Wine in Westwood. This is a huge surprise and my first beer from this brewery. A great blend of amped up wheat with double ipa hops. Dark yellow color kinda cloudy. Taste is a huge double ipa hop citrus punch with the grain texture body of a bold wheat beer. All around excellent and very enjoyable beer. If this was regularly available I would buy it consistently.
3.9 Draft at Taps, Petaluma. Foggy deep gold with large fluffy white head and copious lacing. Bright, grassy, lemony aromas charge forward ahead of subtle wafery tones. Big, fresh, assertive hopping brings powerful, almost anesthetic, spices like wintergreen and rosemary, with a tender, pasty sweetness playing support. A skosh of hotness sullies a pleasing resinous finish. A capable challenger in the Sumpin’ Sumpin’ class.
3.8 Bottle. Pour is a hazy gold with a massive white head, good lacing/retention. Aroma is wheat malt, citrus/floral hops, spicy yeast. Taste is soft wheat malt, big grapefruit/citrus hops, lemon, light booze. Palate is creamy, light-medium body, bitter finish. Kind of reminded me of 3F gumballhead taken to the next level. Earlier Rating: 12/16/2009 Total Score: 3.3 Pours light orange with plenty of white head and lacing. Taste is bitter with an alcoholic bite. Bottle was old but this is the first wheat IPA I have tried.
3.6 (tap) clar honey amber with small white head; aromas of pine, fruit; balanced flavour with long light bitter finish
3.8 On tap at the brewery. Pours a hazy golden orange. Thin whit head with good lacing. Good wheat flavor and then a lot of hops! This is a great beer. If you a fan of wheat and IPAs you have got to try this one.
3.2 Odd blend of styles, but it kind of works. Malt flavors are chewy, wheaty and grainy sweet. Hops are herbal and floral, yet not exactly like your typical American-style IPA. Dry finish. Flavors and aromas are decent, overall. But there’s an alcohol burn that’s too harsh and too hot, and it takes away from the delicate malt and hop notes. Without that alcoholic distraction this would be a much more enjoyable beer.
3.5 22. Pours a cloudy burnished medium amber with orange edges. Loose, sudsy, and nicely deep off-white head. Huge bready wheaty nose, smells like cracked husks heading for a flour grinder, plus a tang of activated yeast. Creamy medium body with lively carb. Wheat, caramel, and oranges on the mid palate. Fruity, oily hop finish of oranges. Nice refreshing big old wheat beer. Would happily drink again. Earlier Rating: 1/11/2009 Total Score: 4.4 22. Thanks, SuzyGreenberg! Pours a hazy dark orangeish amber. Dense but shallow off-white head. Huge tropical fruit nose: grapefruit, pineapple, mango. Creamy medium body. Piney, grapefruity, toasty mid-palate with a big resiny finish. These huge hops combine with the dense, somewhat mild but still perceptible brown-bread wheat notes so well. It’s just a natural match. Great beer.
3.6 Bomber from Holiday Wine Cellar ($11.59). Pours a very clear gold-straw color with one finger of off-white head. Aroma of mellow citrus, some tropical fruit, and bits of wheat and sweet caramel. Flavor has grapefruit as well as significant earthy-vegetal hops, ending with a noticeable (though weak) malt backbones. The wheat seems to mellow out the hop "bite" (despite the apparent marketing message for this beer). Still, it’’s noticeably more bitter than sweet. Okay DIPA, but not worth the price. (71, 544)
